News and Notes for August 2017

Jesus wisely advised us to consider the birds. I am sure we all know his famous words about birds which are expressed in both Matthew and Luke’s gospels:

‘Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap; the have no storehouse or barn, yet God feeds them.’

I may not have seen any ravens lately but I have considered birds for most of my life. My earliest memory is one of a sparrow hawk which sat on our garden fence, a very rare visitor. Imagine my delight when a book by Simon Barnes was published last year entitled, ‘The Meaning of Birds’. So, using some of the generous donation the congregation gave me, I purchased this book which is a fascinating read.

Let me give you a taster. ‘Some British species would be regarded as the most wonderful birds in the world if only they had the decency to be rare.’ Simon then goes on to describe the beauties of the pigeon, chaffinch, and mallard, all very common.

Birds are all around us. If we cannot see them we can usually hear them so this book is not an identification guide but a reflection on the part birds play in our lives, reflecting on the intrinsic wonder of birds and the myriad of ways they affect our lives.

In the past we have listened out for the sound of the cuckoo as the herald of spring. This is no longer the case so I have turned to listening out for the chiffchaff as the first sign that spring is on the way. However I know that spring has really arrived when I hear the screaming of tumbling swifts in flight in early May.

4

Now swifts are a remarkable bird. A swift spends the first three years of its life in flight, at speed, covering hundreds of miles. No rest until it is time to breed.

The Bible is full of references to birds. No wonder Jesus asked us to consider the birds. So do take Jesus words to heart. He reminds us: ‘You are worth far more than the birds’.

Birds give us the clue to knowing God as we worship together and on our own, as we pray together and on our own, and as we read his word together and on our own. As Jesus says: ‘Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his or her life? ’ (Matthew 6 v. 27)

Now there’s a question, maybe rhetorical? But it is worth thinking about.

Church Family News

Baptisms

In May 6 months old Heidi Rose Bamford came with parents Hayley and Lance for Heidi’s baptism.

On 25th June we welcomed two families: Katy and Graham with Roman John Stevenson and Gabriella June Stevenson for their baptism.

Also, Katrina and Craig with Chelsie-May Brett and Caliam James Brett for their baptisms. Craig was also baptised that day.

Then on July 23rd two families came: Laura and Clifton brought Ashton Jack Palmer for his baptism. He was supported by family and friends, many already part of our church family - Ashton is little brother of Jayden Palmer, a regular Sunday Club member, and grandma Helen read the lesson.

Travis William O’Shea also came with parents Declan and Emily and family and friends for Travis’s baptism.

-----------------------

‘... one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all’. (Ephesians 4: 5-6)

We warmly welcome all these little ones and their families into the fellowship of Cotmanhay church.

Prayer Focus

No Fear Here! - The Promise of Protection

There have been very dark and difficult times recently with terrorist attacks in Manchester and London. It is natural to be concerned and feel anxious at these events but we have the

promise of protection in our Lord Jesus Christ.

In the bible there are 365 references to ‘Fear not’. That’s one for every day of the year! Persecuted Christians in other parts of the world are also praying for people affected by events in this country.

We can take strength as we continue to pray for all those involved in terrorist attacks; for healing of bodies and minds and for the comfort of the Holy Spirit.

Wind and Waves (Matthew 14: 22-34)

Buffeted by the waves of the world, waves of worry, insecurity and rejection; personally, waves of fear of difference and terrorism; nationally and globally, The wind against us in our small boats, and so strong.

How we need to hear that voice of encouragement, To lift our eyes to the only source of calm in every storm.

When the sea is raging And sinking seems inevitable Your presence will not only keep us afloat, But will lead us safely to solid ground. Your presence Jesus – stronger than the wind and waves, Our security, Our Saviour. Daphne Kitching

Ladies’ Group Report - Pam Bailey Events Co-ordinator

Our June meeting saw us well entertained and fed by Rev. Carla Vicencio Prior from Kirk Hallam Church.

In July nine members, with apologies from five other members, attended our short AGM. This was followed by prize bingo and a quiz. Shirley and Christine provided excellent refreshments. Numbers were few but it did not detract from a wonderful evening of fun and fellowship.

It was with great sadness that due to falling numbers we have had to take the decision to stop running the Ladies’ Group - July was our final meeting.

For over 40 years we have had excellent speakers, boat trips, coach outings, summer evening meals at local hostelries and Christmas parties with dancing and musical entertainment.

Our members have been active at Church fayres on the cake stall and in the kitchen. For the past ten years we have raised and donated approximately £5,000 to charities including RNLI, DLR Air Ambulance, Ilkeston Hospital League of Friends, Salvation Army and Great Ormond Street Hospital.

We have collected and sent clothing and children's items to a village in Romania. A large amount of men's clothing was sent to the homeless in Nottingham and cash to the Night Shelter run by Derby City Mission. For 5 years we have also held a food collection once a year for the Padley Centre in Derby.

Many thanks to all past members for their generosity, their fun and friendship, to the committee for their organisation skills and also to Rev. Peter for his support.

Once again this year I shall be taking part in this walk on Saturday 9th September.

Moon Walk for Breast Cancer Research

Many thanks to everyone who supported us in this challenge. It was certainly interesting walking through the beautiful environment of Edinburgh and the moonlight was spectacular! It was also very special seeing the early light of day about 2 o’clock in the morning and hearing the dawn chorus soon afterwards.

We raised a total of over £300 so thank you very much.

New Prayer Initiative

Last month some members of our church family went to the Transform Weekend of worship, teaching and fellowship. (see page 8) Many attended the seminar by Will Foulger from Trinity Church, Mansfield Road, Nottingham.

At our new weekly prayer meeting Barbara Clayton and Glenice Boulton shared some ideas on prayer - how the whole church family can be more involved in prayer.

To help everyone be included even when they are unable to come to the services a Prayer Notes sheet will be available for people to use.

In this way people can still have the opportunity to be meaningfully involved in the life and worship of the church. We can affect not only our own lives but the growth of the church and the kingdom of God.

If you would like to be part of this new initiative, or know someone who would, please see either of the church wardens.

New Prayer Meeting

Mondays from 6pm - 7pm in church

This meeting replaces the prayer time formerly held at 9am on Mondays.

8

Transform Weekend Christian Festival

10 of us again had a great time camping or as day visitors at Walesby Forest with 600 others, mostly from Nottingham & Southwell diocese.

We enjoyed sharing the life of this community and a bit of rain on Saturday morning didn’t dampen our spirits; an opportunity to welcome rain as refreshment from the Holy Spirit!

The theme of the festival was ‘Living the Life’. We heard how God is changing lives and communities and took part in the excellent worship, teaching and seminars on offer.

A beautifully prepared 24/7 prayer tent was also a peaceful and inspiring place to be.

The young people enjoyed their own programme and we all joined together for the final act of worship including Holy Communion on Sunday morning.

We had fun too! There were more light-hearted after hours events and we could sample activities on Saturday afternoon - Kodie and Abi braved the cave maze and Abi was a whiz at archery (Ele seemed to be aiming for a nearby field!)

Lynne with young friend from the church family camping next door marvel at the colours of the rainbow seen in a bubble!

Dates for next year already announced -

Friday 13th July - Sunday 15th July 2018

Please come and join us. 9
