After 24 years of dedication and leadership, ELTOC’s Executive Director, Mita Basu, retired this summer in June. Mita will be greatly missed and we wish her all the very best in her well-deserved retirement. In July, we welcomed a new Executive Director, Giselle Leduc, who has a background in management, language instruction, and the not-for-profit sector. Giselle most recently worked at World Skills, an organization devoted to helping newcomers develop Canadian job skills and find employment - a mission well aligned with ELTOC’s own mission. Please feel free to drop in and meet her if you are in the neighborhood.

ELTOC’s Executive Director Announcements

Mita’s retirement was celebrated at our Spring Tea Fundraiser in May 2018 and we are grateful to City Councillor, Tobi Nussbaum, who delivered a heart-warming speech to honour her work with ELTOC and the community. Thank you to everyone who came to support us. A very special thanks go to our board member, Elizabeth Heatherington, who was the lead organizing force behind the event. We also thank St. Bartholomew's Church for the venue and Susan Sweeney Hermon who played beauti-ful music. We had over 100 guests and raised just over $4,000. A big thank you to those who volunteered at the event, donated items for the silent auction, and brightened the event with their presence!

On January 11, 2016, I was having the hardest fight in my life. My heart was full of emotions and it was fighting my mind and my thoughts. I could not

side with either. The choice between them was very hard. My heart was broken to leave my family. My mother could not come to see me at the airport because she was really poor. Only my father and my brothers came to say goodbye Amina… I felt like going back with them, but I couldn’t. My mind was pushing me to go, saying “It’s your opportunity Amina. You will have a better life. You will have a good place for your children and you can continue your education. What do you have here? Nothing.” I went on my way to the plane. I never turned back. I was afraid to change my mind. I just stuck to my husband’s hand and went.

Susan: Susan ’s student loves reading about actors and musicians, so she has rewritten and

simplified some stories taken from newspapers or magazines to make it easier for her student

to read. The stories keep the student motivated to read and learn. Susan also uses music

videos to accompany the simplified stories on various musicians.

CLB 3

Dominique: www.perfect-english-grammar.com - This website has grammar explanations

also great for tutors who are looking to learn more about some grammar points.

CLB 4

Jean: On Channel 16- Omni television, there is a program called “Let’s Talk English”. It
