Scholarship

Recipients! The Kansas Motor Carriers Association has named

four recipients of the 2018 KMCA Foundation

Scholarship. These three young men and woman

represent hard work and and community

engagement at the highest levels. We are proud to

help them complete their educational journeys and

wish them well as they pursue their chosen careers.

Landon Butler likes to figure things out. Whether it's calculus or pancakes, he's al-ways discovering ways to make the process more efficient.

Landon begins his freshman year at Kansas State University studying industrial engineer-ing and mathematics. He hopes to one day help trucking companies discover the fastest and safest routes possible.

Landon graduated from Mill Valley in 2018 with a 4.0 grade point average. His extra curicular activities included band, tennis, Scholars Bowl, National Honor Society, and Boy Scouts. For two summers, he was an intern (and the only high school employee) with Kiewet: Construction, Engineering and Mining Service. By his second summer with Kiewet, Landon was doing the work of an entry level engineer.

Landon's connection to KMCA is through his great uncle, David Caldwell, who is with ABF Freight in Oklahoma and uncle, Brian Butler, who is with Swift Transportation in Missouri.

Continuing his march toward graduating with a degree in Economics, Cody Clarke is developing tools that will serve him well in the business world.

Cody learned about the importance of hard work early on where he watched his family establish a successful farming operation. He is passionate about the agricultural industry and knows that to be successful and competitive in the job market one must always be prepared to keep up with the latest education and technology.

Cody's letters of recommendation consistently mentioned his empathy, interpersonal and leadership skills, traits that will be valued as highly as his work ethic.

This is second year Cody has been awarded a KMCA scholar-ship. Currently, he is a junior at Kansas State University. Cody's connection to KMCA is through his mother, Shawna Clarke, who is employed with Bar K Bar Trucking.

No one could say Andrew Hurt didn't take advantage of all West Elk High School and Howard had to offer. His pages and pages of school and commu-nity activities paint a picture of engaged and busy young man.

Now that he is off to Cowley College to pursue his associates in business, Andrew brings that enthusiasm to a whole new community. After his finishes at Cowley, he wants to pursue his bachelors in business and diesel mechanics at Oklahoma State University Technology Institute.

From a young age, Andrew watched his father repair equip-ment that kept their farm operation running smoothly. He eventually helped maintain all variety of equipment includ-ing skid steers, trucks and tractors.

Andrew hopes to initially pursue a career as diesel me-chanic and eventually become a sales representative. His ultimate goal is to own his own business in Elk County and give back to his hometown community.

Andrew's connection to KMCA is through Harrod's Incorpo-rated.

Rylie Templeton is preparing for a career teaching. It's a goal she's had for a long time. She even knows where she wants to teach, her former school, Village Elementary in her hometown of Emporia.

Now a sophmore at Emporia State University, she is getting closer to realizing her goal. Through her sorority and the ESU Cheer Squad, she takes part in community projects including a squad-staffed babysitting project and Make-A-Wish. She is also very involved with her church, First United Methodist, and says growing up in that church and now worshipping there as a adult is very special for her.

When not busy with school or activities, she holds down a part-time job at a local flower shop. Multitasking appears to come naturally to her. While a senior in high school, Rylie completed her Nurses Aide certification, a program that was demanding and rigorous. Her former instructor wrote that Rylie excelled in the program while maintaining her senior year studies and community activities.

Rylie's connection to KMCA is through her father, Joe Tem-pleton, who is the towing manager for Williams Towing.

In MemoriamDaniel “Dan” J. Hammes, 67, passed away peacefully on Thursday July 12, 2018 at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital after his long battle with pulmonary fibrosis and skin cancer.

Dan was born to Eugene G. and Eleanor Wichman Hammes on September 27, 1950 in Seneca. He attended Sts. Peter & Paul High School graduating with the class of 1968. He started working early in his life and by the age of 10, he rode his bike to work at Fort Markley. By the age of 14, he bought his own combine and went on harvest with his dad and a group of people. In the 1960s, he bought his first dump truck and went to work with his dad. After he married, he transitioned to more over the road trucking with Mike Bennett. He started Hammes Trucking, Inc. in 2001 and Hammes Repair, Inc. in 2008. In 2017, Dan retired due to his health but he continued to show interest in the business that he started.

On November 7, 1970, Dan married Shirley Ann Glissman at St. Bede’s Church in Kelly. After their honeymoon in New Orleans, they settled in Seneca.

Dan was interested in numerous hobbies over the years such as watching his son Brad compete in drag racing, watching his grandchildren’s ballgames, going to tractor pulls and playing cards. He had tremendous joy in raising his children and his grandchildren and going on family

vacations with them.

Dan was preceded in death by his father Eugene G. (Hum-mer) Hammes on July 16, 1987.

Dan is survived by his wife Shirley of 47 years, his children, Jason (Jill) Hammes of Seneca, Traci Hammes of Rossville, Brad (Amy) Hammes of Seneca. His mother Eleanor Hammes Connell of Seneca and his siblings, Alice Trower of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Doug Hammes of Seneca and Jim Hammes of Seneca. Five adorable grandchildren Taylor, Ashley, Isabelle, Stella and Mallory.

Memorials may be given in Dan’s memory to the COINS for a Cause and/or Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School and sent in care of the family.
