This spring, we launched our Interfaith Committee. The committee is made up of both intermarried couples and parents of intermarried couples. Together, we are exploring ways in which we can more fully embrace intermarried families.

As you may know, according to standards of the Conservative Movement, Conservative Rabbis are not permitted to perform or participate in intermarriages. At the same time, Rabbi Rudin-Luria and I have a deep appreciation for and love of all couples, whether both partners are Jewish or not. We often will meet with interfaith couples for pre-marital counseling (as we do with all couples) and assist couples in planning ways to make their wedding more Jewish. Recently, the Movement changed its stance, permitting Conservative Rabbis to attend intermarriages. If you or your child is marrying someone who is not Jewish, we would be honored to attend the wedding. We hope you will invite us.

This coming March, we will be hosting a workshop for Conservative synagogues, entitled LGBTQ+ Equality and Inclusion in Jewish Life. We will also launch a task force to address how our congregation can better embrace and involve LGBTQ+ Jews in our congregation. As you know, I have long been an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. I also wrote a Jewish legal paper (responsa) permitting same sex marriages. I have been privileged to officiate at two same sex marriages and look forward to doing more. It is important for all LGBTQ+ Jews to know that we love and support them, as we do all.

(Continued on page 9)

Staff ChangesThank you to our Development Director, Kim Cole, for her six years of dedicated service to the synagogue. Our development and fundraising efforts are better and stronger because of her, with successful Mahar annual campaigns, Tribute events and endowment growth. Many of you have gotten to know Kim through her development work, as she nurtured relationships with members and created long-term donor interest in supporting the synagogue. Building community was important to Kim, and these relationships reflect well upon her and the synagogue. We will miss Kim and her bright and positive energy in the office; she was always willing to help staff and members when needed. We wish her the best of luck in her future endeavors. We know she will be successful wherever she goes.

We are pleased to welcome Aklile Kebede, Kadima & Jr. Kadima Advisor, and Judy Reynolds, USY Advisor.

President’s Message Cantor’s CornerAlthough 2019 has been a wonderful year in many respects, it has also been a difficult year due to what feels like the passing of a generation. Since we are a large synagogue, we constantly have deaths, each of which leaves a hole, not just in the hearts of the affected family, but also in the fabric of our

synagogue. However, 2019 truly feels different. Perhaps the sudden passing of my father-in-law has led to more introspection, but it made me realize how many synagogue leaders we lost this year. Some were leaders in the traditional sense, as we lost two past presidents, who showed their commitment to the synagogue through their generosity of time, talent and treasure at the highest level they could. Their wise counsel and welcoming smiles encouraged newer congregants to get involved too. Others were leaders by example, giving of themselves and donating a great deal to improve the synagogue. Still others were leaders by showing their sense of loyalty and commitment to B’nai Jeshurun, for example, by being regulars at one of our daily minyans.

To honor their dedication and sacrifices and to maintain all that they have accomplished, we, the next generation, need to take over the mantle and give of ourselves: to step up and support the synagogue financially, to volunteer our time to enrich our programming and events, and to share our skills so that we can make the tough decisions required to transform our congregation and ensure we are around for the next 150+ years.

I am confident we have those future leaders within our congregation. Some are already highly involved; others have not yet begun to realize their potential. We have plans underway to get many of you more involved in the various activities of the synagogue. If you get a call to step up, please say yes. Or, better yet, look for ways to get more involved. Aside from strengthening the legacy of those who came before us, you will soon come to see that those who give more, also get more themselves.

Gena Cohen

How does one become closer to G-d? We have structured prayer to be said daily. We have the opportunity to do good deeds and follow the mandates of the Torah.

Rabbi Nachman of Breslov recommended other methods to close the gap with G-d. He was a Chassidic rabbi in the 1800’s and had a large following. He would meditate daily. He suggested talking to G-d in solitude in your natural language. Pour out your heart in an unscripted manner. No request is too large. Using this personal time, he suggested one could talk to G-d as one does to a friend. He suggested being in a natural setting, if possible. Outdoors is optimum. Being amongst nature and G-d’s creations would draw a person closer to G-d. If this was not possible, due to fear of wild animals or other concerns, find a room where you won’t be disturbed. Even in your bed, one can achieve this state of mind. Through verbalizing one’s thoughts to G-d, one can find clarity.

“Meditation has been used by our sages for hundreds

of years.”Rabbi Nachman believed that this daily ritual would enhance daily prayer as well as elevate an individual to become holy. This process is known as Hitbodedut. Meditation has been used by our sages for hundreds of years. Focusing on key phrases, visualization and other methods enhanced the relationship with G-d. He required his students to do this for an hour daily. Initially it may be awkward, but through regular practice, one can cleanse the mind and reach lofty levels.

He also taught that midnight is the optimum time, as one can concentrate and connect better with G-d. He firmly believed that every person can attain this connection, regardless of one’s scholarly abilities or social status. We all can benefit from this advice. May we all draw closer to G-d and find joy through the process.

Education & YouthA School with a Mission

B’nai Jeshurun’s Youth & Learning Center operates according to a mission statement developed by parents in our school. I’d like to take this opportunity to share our mission statement with you and what it means for us. Our Mission: We are committed to the

teaching and upholding of the beliefs, ideals, practices and values of Conservative Judaism in order to help all students develop positive, lasting Jewish identities. The Goals: The school bases its program on the belief that fostering Jewish continuity requires a solid Jewish education. Upon completion of their formal Jewish education, our students should be able to: • Live ethical Jewish lives• Perform acts of tikkun olam (the concept of “repair the

world”)• Participate actively and competently in prayer services• Read Hebrew prayers• Perform mitzvot (act according to the commandments)• Demonstrate a connection and love for the State of

Israel• Identify as a member of k’lal Yisrael (the world Jewish

community)In order to accomplish our mission, we need to work hand in hand with you, our families, partnering in this sacred work. Shabbat, holidays, customs and rituals can be learned in the synagogue, but will only be fully absorbed when a family brings these traditions into their home.

We know that learning occurs in many ways. The social interactions between students and between student and teacher lead to greater understanding. Immersive experiences, such as our Shabbatonim, are vital complements to traditional classroom learning. And Israel learning activities with our Shin-Shin, an Israeli student working in Cleveland prior to joining the army, help our students develop bonds with Israel.

Our mission and our goals are critical because they guide the education we provide, and it is equally critical that your voice is heard as we explore our goals and mission in continuing to shape our school. We look forward to seeing you back after the summer in just a few weeks – join us at our Back to School BBQ Shabbat Dinner & Shabbat Rocks service on August 16th!

Tree of LifeHerman Sculpture Dedication

Sunday, August 25 • 10 am Join the family of late Rabbi Jack & Shoshana Hermanz”l as we dedicate “Starting a Dialogue”, the newest addition to the Berger Family Garden of Togetherness.

Rabbi Herman was the beloved rabbi of Beth Am for 22 years, until his untimely passing in 1969. Rabbi & Shoshana’s children, Daniel, Joel and Tamar, will dedicate this

beautiful sculpture in loving memory of their parents. The sculpture selection was inspired by one of Shoshana’s favorite table-top pieces of art, which was an abstract shofar. “Starting a Dialogue” is a seven foot stainless steel sculpture by contemporary artist Kevin Robb.

With this same goal in mind, our congregation is creating an All-Gender and Family Bathroom. This bathroom will be available for anyone whose gender identity makes them feel uncomfortable in a traditionally gendered (men’s or women’s) restroom. It will also be available to parents helping a small child and to adults assisting an elderly parent. I am grateful to Wendy & Dan Dobres and family, and especially their daughter Eliana, who recognized this need and stepped forward to make it possible.

I am proud that this congregation is forward thinking and is dedicated to true inclusion and empowerment of all Jews. I am excited to see where these efforts take us.

Rabbi Stephen Weiss

Screening of “The Women’s Balcony”Saturday, September 21 • 8:15 pm

This program is made possible through the generosity of the

Dobres-Berkowitz Israel Programming Fund.

When the women’s balcony in an Orthodox synagogue in Jerusalem collapses, leaving the rabbi’s wife in a coma and the rabbi in shock, the congregation falls into crisis. Charismatic young Rabbi David appears to be a savior after the accident, but slowly starts pushing his fundamentalist ways and tries to take control. This tests the women’s friendships and creates a rift between the community’s women and men in this rousing, good-hearted tale about women speaking truth to patriarchal power.
