August 2019 PONDERING PASTOR On Sunday, July 14th, the congregation gathered for a potluck lunch and a special presentation given by council president, John Hofland, along with Pastor Jeffrey Ingold. The PowerPoint presentation as well as a handout sharing the recent information gathered by the congregation council with help from staff proved to be enlightening and inspirational. St. Lukes has a rich history of community engagement, congregational life and uplifting worship which are all aspects of this ministry we celebrate, and hope to continue into the near and distant future. Yet, what is most important is that we begin the process of planning our future, rather than to find ourselves reacting to it. The Vitality and Sustainability Study has completed the task of gathering information, compiling lots of data and identifying our assets”. Now, we are set to move into a new phase of the study wherein the congregation council will begin to engage the whole congregation gauging what your thoughts, hopes, dreams, concerns and ideas might be concerning St. Lukes ministry and its future vitality and sustainability. I hope you are as enthused about this process as I am. If we truly believe ourselves to be a movement of people called by God to serve Christ Jesus, to proclaim the Good News of Gods love to all people, I hope you equally consider what a blessing and honor that process can be for your life and the life of this community of faith. It is a joyful process unlike any other. If you would like a handout of the presentation, and/or to review the PowerPoint, stop by my office and I will be more than happen to present that to you. You may also find copies on the table outside my office. Stop by anytime! Peace, Pastor Jeffrey Ingold

PONDERING PASTOR On Sunday, July 14th, the congregation gathered for a potluck lunch and a special presentation given by council president, John Hofland, along with Pastor Jeffrey Ingold. The PowerPoint presentation as well as a handout sharing the recent information gathered by the congregation council with help from staff proved to be enlightening and inspirational.

St. Luke’s has a rich history of community engagement, congregational life and uplifting worship which are all aspects of this ministry we celebrate, and hope to continue into the near and distant future. Yet, what is most important is that we begin the process of planning our future, rather than to find ourselves reacting to it.

The Vitality and Sustainability Study has completed the task of gathering information, compiling lots of data and identifying our “assets”. Now, we are set to move into a new phase of the study wherein the congregation council will begin to engage the whole congregation gauging what your thoughts, hopes, dreams, concerns and ideas might be concerning St. Luke’s ministry and its future vitality and sustainability.

I hope you are as enthused about this process as I am. If we truly believe ourselves to be a movement of people called by God to serve Christ Jesus, to proclaim the Good News of God’s love to all people, I hope you equally consider what a blessing and honor that process can be for your life and the life of this community of faith. It is a joyful process unlike any other.

If you would like a handout of the presentation, and/or to review the PowerPoint, stop by my office and I will be more than happen to present that to you. You may also find copies on the table outside my office. Stop by anytime!

Missions Week

During the hot and muggy week of July 7th -12th, several of our high school and middle school youth participated in this year’s local mission trip called Mission Week. Each day throughout the week the kids were up early and worked on the CCDC playground located on Marsh Road. They installed French drains to help with flooding, washed all the playground equipment and toys, removed the old playground barrier to make way for the new, spread over a dump truck load of mulch, and pressure washed the walkways. In the afternoon the kids went out and worked at various local community sites including: park cleanup at the Amay James recreation center, grounds work at Phillips Academy, packed boxes of emergency food supplies at Loaves and Fishes, and sorted donations at Crisis Assistance. The youth worked extremely hard and were team players in every possible way. I was incredibly impressed with their attitudes and encouragement of one another. It was definitely one of the best Mission Weeks ever! I hope you are as proud of them as I am!! Jake

The St. Luke’s Ladybugs (Dreema Brunnemer, Janet Eve, Sandie Fenton, Sarah Ingold, Patsy Schober, Karen Smith, and Rebekah Woodward) met on July 10th and visited Elsie Robinson, Mary Gallagher, and Eva & Gunther Franz. Elsie and Eva were both celebrating birthdays that week, so we sang “Happy Birthday” and gave them birthday balloons and tiaras. Mary Gallagher’s eyes lit up when we walked into her room. Mary is musically talented and used to play the piano beautifully for us before she moved into the nursing home where she lives now. She still sings and enjoyed singing “Beautiful Savior” and several other hymns with us. The Ladybugs will make more visits on August 20th. If you are interested in joining this group, please call Rebekah Woodward at 704-614-8254.

Dear Church Family,

I can't put into words how much your prayers meant to me while my mom was unexpectedly in the hospital. To say it was a scary time for our family would be an understatement. Thank you for the immediate response to the prayer request. She is back home and recovering day by day. It will be a slow process, but she should be back to herself in a few months. I give thanks for the power of prayer and the healing she is experiencing. Forever grateful, Becca Dolan

A Peak into our Fall Schedule

God, our hearts are broken with pain at the senseless deaths caused by gun violence. Families mourn, children live in fear, and some in our nation respond by arming themselves with more guns with greater capacity to end life. Our disconnection and alienation has caused some to turn to guns for protection and safety. We ask that you touch our hearts with your love, heal our brokenness, and turn us away from violence toward peace. Help us to transform our own hearts and to seek peaceful ways of resolving our differences. Let our hands reach out and connect with those who feel alone, those who live in fear, and those suffering from mental illness. Let our voices be raised asking our legislators to enact gun laws to protect all in our society, especially those most vulnerable. Let our pens write messages demanding change while also scripting words of hope and transformation. We ask this in the name of the God who desires that we live together in peace. Amen

Our Shut-Ins

In every congregation we find some members who, due to age and sickness are no longer able to get out as they once did. They are confined to home or in a nursing home. They are lonely and miss their church and church family.

How can we respond? A card, a visit, maybe a little gift to lift their spirits and let them know they are not forgotten. It’s the little things that mean a great deal when you no longer can be active in your church family.

Please remember our shut-ins with visits, calls, cards, and prayers.

October 20th at Independence Park, 7th and Hawthorne Lane, Charlotte, NC 28204 We are walking and raising funds to help end hunger and poverty

internationally, nationally, and locally. A portion of our proceeds benefit our 3 local partners, Crisis Assistance Ministry, Loaves & Fishes and Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina. Our 4.1 mile walk symbolizes the distance people in developing nations walk everyday to get water.

CROP Walk 2019

Priscilla Circle will be volunteering on August 17th for the Charlotte Pride parade. More details to follow.

Katharina Circle - will help with the Community of Transitions “Back to School Bash” on Thursday, August 22nd.

Yuval Rabin blessed us with a concert on Monday, July 15, 2019 at 7pm. Yuval is a Swiss-Israel concert organist who presented works by Alexander, J. S. Bach, C.P.F. Bach, Sheriff, Mendelssohn, also with his own composition, Hommage a Mendelssohn, on the Casavant pipe organ in the sanctuary. His concert was immensely enjoyed by all who attended.
