Letter from the EditorAnother month and we are still in the midst of Covid-19. Restaurants and pubs are now finally open, albeit with stringent rules in place for social distancing, and life does appear to be returning to a new normal.
AUGUST 2020Front cover: WIN cocktails from Crockers at Home see page 16
At the time of writing we have been told we must wear masks in shops from the 24th July. Why not now I ask? Thankfully we have plenty of mask makers here in Bucks busily working away at their sewing machines. If you are in need of some beautiful homemade fabric masks (non medical) please get in touch so we can point you in the right direction.
Theatres and events venues are unable to open for at least another few weeks. Our hearts go out to all the performers, production teams and agents who are losing money by the day. We miss featuring local events in our magazines and on our website and we can’t wait until we are able to do this again. Let’s hope that when they do reopen it will be a case of “carry on as usual”.
We’ve got a fabulous competition for you this month in the shape of cocktails
from Crockers at Home. So many of us are unsure about going out for drinks so a cocktail evening at home with friends and family seems very appealing. You must be 18 years of age to enter and please always drink responsibly (see page 16).
Finally, congratulations to Wycombe Wanderers FC (Chairboys) who have earned promotion to the Championship for the first time in their 133 year history. We are thrilled for them and wish them the very best of luck for the coming season.
Wishing you all health, happiness and let’s all keep smiling.

Pat Poole, the Chairman of the Bucks Federation of WI Groups, said “The display was completed for our 2020 celebration and it is truly wonderful how something like this can be captured in greenery - such talent! Huge thanks to Andy Sherwood from Buckinghamshire Council and the team of expert planters for bringing the design to life... We are really thrilled at how this looks and I'm sure the community will enjoy it too”.
The 119 Groups across Buckinghamshire have over 4000 members and they have been busy celebrating this marvellous milestone in lots of other ways, despite their plans being cancelled.
They have been walking 100 miles for 100 years, sewing flags and pennants (in between making the Scrubs and NHS Laundry Bags), creating decorative planters, holding celebratory meetings via Zoom and lots more. Regular monthly meetings have also gone online with guest speakers giving fabulous talks and demonstrations on Gardening for your Mental Health, Fashions Tips and Wardrobe Audits.
There have also been quiz nights, craft nights, vir tual afternoon tea events as well as fantastic online courses members have access to at Denman College.
The WI is not going to let Covid 19 stand in its way, that’s for sure.
Most of the Buckinghamshire Federation of WI’s Centenary plans were cancelled due to COVID-19 but the Trustees are absolutely delighted with the formal carpet bed display outside High Wycombe Town Hall.

There is no doubt that a pub comes with atmosphere, community, friendship and well kept real ales served in their peak condition. During lockdown most of these qualities won't have been replicated when drinking at home, but hopefully during this time you've found one or two beers that you have enjoyed nearly as much as a pint in your local! The breadth of choice of beer is huge, so I would challenge anyone who says I don't like beer to try a few different styles; I'm sure there is something out there for (nearly) everyone.
Real ale is an amazing product made from only four ingredients; water, barley, yeast and hops. A true real ale will have live yeast in it, improving the product and keeping it fresh as it sits in a cask waiting to be drunk. This is why a pint in a pub, which has been expertly cared for by the landlord, will be just the way it was intended to be drunk by the brewer who came up with the unique recipe. Bottled beers
need to have a longer shelf life and are pasteurized, which kills the yeast, stopping any further fermentation. This will make a different product, but one that can still be thoroughly enjoyed. Brewers can
tweak their beer recipe to adapt to the bottled variety and we sell some lovely ales which I have been testing over the last couple of months!
The variety of ales means you can have seasonal favourites, so while in the winter I'd go for a heavier, darker, malty ale, in the summer I pick hoppy zesty paler ales. Indian pale ale was named after it was shipped to India in the 19th century. It was a beefed up version of pale ale with a higher alcohol and hop content to help preserve it on the long journey. "Proper Job" is an authentic IPA with a strength of 5.5 ABV, brewed by Tribute Brewery in Cornwall it's brewed with American hops and is a multiple award winner in it's bottled form; a great drink on a warm summer’s evening.
Craft beer in a can is a massive trend right now. Influenced by American style beers these pack a punch in a smaller 330ml serving. A can is convenient, quick to chill, and infinitely recyclable. Beers like Camden Town Brewery's Camden ale and Beavertown "neck oil" are fantastic but my recent favourite has to be Brewdog punk IPA which is light, golden and packed with so many flavours; caramel, tropical fruits and grapefruit and all in there with a spikey bitter finish. I find this so refreshing but a four pack doesn't last long!
A third choice for summer is Duchy Originals IPA. This one is brewed exclusively for Waitrose by Wychwood brewery in Witney. It's an organic option, so surely couldn't give you a hangover? Originally brewed to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, it contains British organic sovereign hops and is suitable for vegans. A donation is made from Duchy organic sales to the Prince of Wales Charitable foundation, helping farmers develop more sustainable methods; so far
Don’t forget, you can pick up copies of hiya bucks in the following Waitrose stores: AMERSHAM, BEACONSFIELD, GERRARDS CROSS, HAZLEMERE AND HIGH WYCOMBE

Waitrose has helped raise £23.5 million for good causes.
Heading into the autumn I look forward to getting back into something a bit heavier. I love Fullers ESB. Brewed by the Thames in Chiswick this is a full bodied "extra special bitter" which is very malty with a mellow bitterness. It's also at the stronger end of the scale at 5.9% ABV. With a powerful malt base using pale and crystal malts to give a toffee and biscuit note, it is balanced with a full array of hops for a dry finish.
With the tremendous range in beers available now the line between lager and bitter has been blurred. Traditionally lager is brewed at lower temperatures with a bottom fermenting yeast meaning it’s clearer and crisper, it lasts longer but it doesn’t have such a range in taste or characteristics. Ales are brewed at warmer temperatures with a top fermenting yeast which can mean the beer will be less clear but taste more, particularly when served at the right temperature. This is the reason why real beer is kept in a cool cellar rather than a fridge with the lager. However, some craft beers are served ice
cold and still have a great taste profile like punk IPA.
Waitrose has a great range of ales and lagers to choose from. We are seeing some great craft beers in cans, added to the traditional bottled ale range, as well as canned and bottled premium lagers. Whether you are planning on supping at home or getting back to the pub, enjoy your beers and give something new a try, and wonder at how four simple ingredients can produce such a huge range
of styles.
Cheers!

Vaasu is the newest venture of twice Michelin starred chef Atul Kochhar. Open from 10th July for take-away only, hiya bucks were honoured to be one of the first to sample the authentic flavours of North Indian food from what will surely be another award-winning restaurant. Vaasu delivers the most authentic Indian flavours that we have tasted outside of India.
Every dish, from the magnificent Tandoori Salmon, the Jhinga Tawa Masala to the Nariyal Gosht, is created with the finest ingredients, balanced with subtle yet powerful flavours.
Highlights include appetizers such as Makai Aur Gosht Ki Seekh (two pieces of minced lamb kebab with mint chutney), Kurkuri Macchi Amritsari (crisp fried spicy telapia with tomato chutney - the famous street food from Punjab), Kadak Aloo Chaat (Bengal’s potato salad snack with tamarind, yoghurt and mint chutney),
VAASU - MARLOW'S NEWEST RESTAURANT
and Baigan Bhajia (a popular dish of aubergine fritters in chickpea flour with mint chutney).
You may not usually pay much attention to poppadums whilst tucking in at the beginning of your meal, but Vaasu’s poppadums are on another level. Plus, the raita and chutneys are not to be missed; we are in love with the coriander one!
Being a family run business (and genuinely a close family), we appreciate how Atul thinks so highly of his Mother’s cooking
Three other restaurants feature in Atul Kochhar Restaurants, all of which reopened on 4th July: The newly refurbished Sindhu at the Compleat Angler Hotel in Marlow; Hawkyns at The Crown Inn, Amersham and Indian Essence in Petts Wood, Kent.

You may think a pie is British, but Atul’s Chicken Tikka Pie takes you on a surprising journey. With inspiration from Atul’s extensive travels throughout India, the grilled chicken tikka, potato mash and berry chutney are quite like no other food we have eaten. The taste is surprisingly familiar but sensationally unique.

Atul Kochhar says “The states across India offer a bounty of beautiful flavours, aromas and spices – from places where the tandoor oven and tawa griddle are kitchen essentials. Our new restaurant Vaasu brings all of this inspiration together, celebrating the life and culture of India through a menu of magnificent dishes. It is super smooth, with a subtle aromatic, and it is very drinkable, with or without a mixer to be honest. Swish the bottle around, remove the cork and take a deep breath. The gin has the most amazing fragrance and cries out to be poured into a large glass filled with ice, or frozen fruit as we like to do, and mixed with a tonic of your choice. We enjoyed it with Schweppes Indian tonic, some frozen raspberries and cucumber slices and we
also enjoyed it with Fevertree tonic with a slice of lemon and lime.
Hand-crafted just over the border in Oxfordshire, this independently owned, and family run, business knows their flavours. Made with 100% British grain, and produced for the UK market, they also donate to WaterAid for every bottle sold through the Work for Good initiative; it couldn’t get any better.

During lockdown we missed crisps. They never made it on to our shopping list, but we longed for a packet or two with a beer sitting in the garden. If only we had known about Darling Spuds!Hand cooked right here in Bucks, Darling Spuds is the creation of Dave and Judy Willis who wanted to create a wholesome and healthy snack. Alongside their Salty Dog brand, named after Jack Russell puppy Ruby, the potato crisps deliver a perfect crunch and bags of flavour. Passionate about potatoes and all the ingredients they use, Darling Spuds are definitely made with love. We very much enjoyed the crunchy Somerset Cheddar & Onion, the Ham & English Mustard (vegetarian, who knew?) and the Mediterranean Sea Salt, especially with a bowl of homemade houmous. The big green recyclable box arriving in the post made our day and the illustrations on the packets made us smile; attention to detail, that’s what we love.We are thrilled that crisps are back on our menu. hiya bucks are always looking to support artisan producers and Darling Spuds fits the brief perfectly. Job well done we say, please keep up the good work!

SUMMER CHEESECAKE
Easiest Ever CheesecakeFOR THE BASE:200g Digestive Biscuits100g Butter FOR THE TOPPING: 400ml Condensed Milk600ml Double CreamJuice of 2/3 Lemons
This Cheesecake had so many rave reviews when we made it online that we just had to share the recipe, along with some lovely photos of what
the children created.
The biscuit crumbs should stick together, if not, use a little more butter. Firmly press the biscuits into the bottom of the cake tin, making sure they are spread evenly. In a large bowl, mix together the cream and condensed milk. Add the lemon juice slowly whilst stirring at the same time. The mixture will begin to thicken. Continue adding lemon juice until your mixture no longer runs like a liquid, and falls slowly off of a spoon (don’t add too much lemon or the mixture will turn to a thin liquid again). Pour on top of the pressed biscuits and evenly spread, creating a flat surface. Chill in the fridge for an hour or so until it is completely set. Carefully remove from the tin and decorate with seasonal fruits, chocolate, caramel or coulis.

Crockers was set up 5 years ago and originally offered dinner parties in people’s homes. Owner Luke Garnsworthy has worked for Heston Blumenthal and Marcus Wareing and in 2016 set up the Chef’s Table in Potten End. Having quickly outgrown that premises a move to Tring took place in 2018 where a cocktail bar was added.
A second site, Crockers Henley, finally opens it’s doors fully in August after being delayed by lockdown. Originally planned to open in April, Crockers Henley offers a Grill, Bar, both Chef’s Tables and several beautiful Georgian rooms that can be booked for the ultimate foodie treat. A sensational mixologist has been employed to create those all-important cocktails.

The Bucks Herald on Saturday January 22nd 1921, under the headline “Sensational Murder in Bucks, Women Jurors, Bailey sentenced to death”, described the trial of George Arthur Bailey, 33, a dairyman popularly known as the whistling milkman. Bailey was found guilty at Bucks Assizes in Aylesbury of the murder of his wife Kate Lilian Bailey at Barn Cottage, Little Marlow on the 29th September 1920 and was sentenced to death by Mr Justice McCardie.
The proceedings were distinguished by the fact that for the first time in the history of the County women were empowered to serve on the jury - Matilda Polly Tack, Annie Anderson White and Maud Sophia Stevenson. The latter raised an objection to serve on the grounds that the nature of the evidence to be called was not of a character which she would
voluntarily hasten to. The Judge overruled this, pointing out the obligations which now devolved upon women in common with men.
Early in the 20th C the Stevenson family built a new house in Hedgerley Green called Sherley Close
and at some point during the 1920’s Mrs Ellen Stevenson and her daughter Ethel vacated Hedgerley Park and moved in to Sherley Close. Hedgerley WI was formed in 1921 and Miss Ethel Stevenson was the first President.
The Hedgerley Park Estate was sold in 1931 to Richmond Watson which ended 50 years ownership by the Stevenson ladies. The new owner proceeded to strip turves, fell trees and open gravel pits and a short while later the house was demolished. During the 1950’s Hedgerley Park was used for filming Ivanhoe starring a young Roger Moore. In the 1950’s Eton Rural District Council acquired land on Hedgerley Hill building social housing and one of the roads was named after Mrs Stevenson.
Mrs Stevenson died in 1937, Maud in 1952, Mabel 1956 and Ethel 1962 thus ending over 80 years connections of the Stevenson family with Hedgerley. Maud and Ethel are buried alongside their mother in St Mary’s Churchyard.
Hedgerley Historical SocietyIn 1912 Miss Ethel Stevenson helped to form the Gerrards Cross branch of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies. Mrs Ellen Stevenson and her daughters Maud and Ethel appear in the Electoral Register in 1915 but would only have been able to vote at local elections. In 1918 Parliament passed the Representation of the People Act granting the vote to women over the age of 30.

Cub Scouts (boys and girls aged 8 to 10 ½) from Amersham, Aylesbury and Chesham were amongst over 1000 Cubs from Buckinghamshire that were stranded on a Desert Island in late June!
Scouts Stranded on
Desert Island!
To keep themselves occupied they were provided with a host of activities to undertake. One of the first activities was to build a den or pitch a tent. Being stranded on a Desert Island gave them the opportunity to explore and they were encouraged to build a boat out of junk or using origami. One of the most enjoyable activities over the weekend seemed to be making a chocolate cake in a cup. On the Saturday evening, along with parents, carers and siblings, they participated in a camp fire with lots of songs, some of them led by the children themselves.
Whilst the rescue boat was on its way, the children were kept entertained with a quiz. They were also encouraged to write a message and put it in a bottle. One of the last activities was code breaking where the children had to decipher three different coded messages.
The whole event was supported by Bucks Scout Radio with the children requesting “shout outs” throughout the weekend. Parents/carers were sending photos to the radio station so they could be shared on their Facebook page. Ideas for many of the activities, e.g. boat building and origami were relayed to everyone over YouTube.
Mum Miranda Lambourne said, “Thank you so much to all involved, you did a wonderful job delivering a very creative, interactive and memorable virtual shipwreck camp, Kieran thoroughly enjoyed it.”
Charis said, “I really enjoyed camp and didn’t want to be rescued! I wanted to spend another night camping!”
Lead Volunteer for Buckinghamshire Scouts James Palin, who led the rescue centre said, “It was really nice to see Cubs, parents, carers and siblings participating in the whole weekend. It’s been awesome seeing so many people helping out building dens, making boats, cooking cakes and so much more. Thanks to all of the adults for organising and running the weekend and to the parents and carers who encouraged their children to join in. I’m sure everyone had a brilliant time.”

Social distance friendly walks
in the Chilterns
The Chilterns Conservation Board and Chiltern Society
have developed a series of 23 walks which are social distance
friendly, avoiding crowded ‘honey-pot’ locations and
narrow paths. Between 2 and 6 miles long, the walks start in market towns or villages, with
good public transport links or parking facilities.
24 | hiyabucks.com
The walks can be downloaded free of charge from www.chilternsaonb.org/explore-enjoy/sd-friendly-walks
The Chilterns has some outstanding food and drink producers. These walks highlight the many farm shops that are open for business selling Chilterns local specialities such as honey, beer, cheese, charcuterie, grass fed lamb and so much more.
The walks have been developed by 18 volunteers, all experienced walk leaders, who are passionate about the Chilterns and who are keen to share some of their favourite walks away from the crowds.
They take in the beautiful rolling landscapes of the Chilterns and it’s picturesque villages, with plenty of historic interest from old drovers routes to iron age hillforts. Discover places with wonderful names like Nanfan Wood, Lilley Hoe and Cobblershill. Some walks start on commons or at recreation grounds with lots of open space, so they are ideal for families or friends to combine with a picnic, and for kids to run around safely.
Annette Venters of the Chilterns Conservation Board said “During Lockdown the Chilterns countryside was used and enjoyed as never before, bringing comfort and joy to many. The well-used honey-pot sites can get very crowded, making social distancing difficult and putting pressure on the landscape. Luckily, the Chilterns has over 2,000 km of footpaths, so there are plenty of quiet places to enjoy. We hope these walks will encourage people to explore the Chilterns and discover new places”.
Many of the walks are stile-free and most are under 4 miles long, making them accessible to many. Whilst we want more people to enjoy the benefits of walking in the Chilterns, we ask them to do this safely and responsibly by, for example, taking litter home, not lighting fires and barbeques, and keeping dogs under control.

Migraines and MeI was eleven when I got my first migraine. This is my
story about migraines and me.
It takes my stomach so long to recover after a bad migraine. Due to the amount of pain killers I have taken over the years my body tends to need a strong dose of pain relief to make it through the day of a migraine. As a result of this my stomach feels sore for at least three days afterwards. I’ve even started taking tablets to help the acid in my stomach and to stop the pain.I feel as though a lot of the time people don’t realise that a migraine is not just a headache, or a really bad headache, it is so much more!
A migraine is a loss of sight, a pain in your head, a pain in your stomach, a sickness in your throat, an ache in your body, and a confusion in your brain that effects your speech. It’s a feeling of dizziness, hunger, tiredness and so much more. It prevents you from driving, seeing, and at times taking a breath is just so painful.
The stress from it all causes severe pins and needles in your hands, your mouth, your throat (that’s scary) and it’s to the
Sometimes talking to someone who understands what you’re going through can really help. To share your experience contact [email protected]
point that you may struggle to do your trousers up after going to the toilet (yes this did happen to me).
Human contact can be painful. What you usually gain from comfort like a hand on your shoulder from a parent, a boyfriend or a friend is too painful to experience. The best thing someone can do to help is to sit silently in a dark room with you and just be there, offering water, snacks and drugs (the strongest and most legal you can get).
I probably sound completely dramatic if you’ve never had a migraine but honestly it is a rollercoaster and not a fun one!

CELEBRATES ITS FIRST JACKPOT WIN!One lucky Buckinghamshire resident has been celebrating following an incredible £25,000 jackpot win on the Buckinghamshire Lottery recently. The winner, who is from Chalfont St. Giles, matched all six numbers.
The Buckinghamshire Lottery supports a huge variety of good causes across the county, including sports clubs, animal charities, disability charities, local community centres and schools. Tickets cost just £1 and 60% of all ticket sales go directly to the good cause itself. Players can choose to support either their favourite good cause, or alternatively the general good cause fund, which supports a wide range of local organisations.
The winner, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: "I play the Lottery to help support my local football club, Chalfont Wasps. It’s so easy to do, and I know how much it helps improve their funding. I always pay monthly by direct debit so that I know my tickets are always included in the draw.
"I must confess that it has not really sunk in that I have won £25,000. I am so over the moon as I never win anything. I am still trying to decide what to spend it on, but a holiday is definitely top of the list!"
Buckinghamshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Public Health, Gareth Williams, added: “This is such fantastic news, especially at the moment when everything around us is so uncertain. Buckinghamshire Lottery can really help organisations big and small across the county with much needed additional funding, and it is fabulous that the Buckinghamshire Lottery is able to offer residents huge wins like we’ve seen this week. My congratulations go to the lucky winner and to Chalfont Wasps.”

A common hurdle to tree growing is the uncertainty or lack of having a destined location to plant the sapling. Just 10% of dwellings in Loudwater and Wooburn Green are without a private or shared garden area. Considering that it often takes a few years for any sapling to develop to a significant size, this largely allows any community member to nurture a tree from seed in a pot at home.Whilst I am continuing to seek out opportunities for large-scale tree planting in and around the area, it makes sense to rally up our community to begin growing native trees from seed as soon as possible, without the need to identify a long-term planting location at the outset. This gives sapling growth a valuable head start. It's super simple and rewarding to begin a tree's life that has the potential to far outlive our own.
Building a team to make tree-growing super simple for our community
Please contact me if you would like to help get our community growing [email protected]
My name is Philip Moroz, I’m 25 years old and I live in Wooburn Green. I have an ambition to grow seeds and nuts into trees on a significant scale.I am searching for individuals in the local area to help me develop an efficient, simple and fun strategy to engage our local community to grow native trees from local seeds at home.

Having recently picked up my own puppy, I decided to document the key expenses and considerations I faced. BUDGET: Like all financial decisions, the key thing is your budget. If you create a budget, or add your pet into your existing budget, it should be relatively straightforward to provide for your pet’s needs and still meet your own needs.According to the PDSA, one of the UK’s leading animal charities, the average monthly cost of a dog is as follows: ● Small dog: £50 ● Medium dog: £65 ● Large dog: £80These costs include, but are not limited to, food, cleaning equipment, grooming tools and insurance – which I’ll cover in more detail later. There are also initial expenses. Getting ready for the arrival of your pet has a cost. From buying a bed, to a collar, identity tags (required by UK law for dogs), toys and more. Making sure you have everything ready to make your pet feel comfortable is crucial, but you shouldn’t underestimate the cost.
Providing for Your Pawsome Pals By Katie Royals
The PDSA estimates the initial costs for dogs as follows:● Small dog breeds: £370 ● Medium dog breeds: £395 ● Large dog breeds: £425Here in Buckinghamshire we’re very lucky to have a range of independent pet shops, like Woody & Friends in Great Missenden, where you’ll find everything you need.VET FEES/INSURANCE: As a minimum, pets need annual injections and check-ups. On top of these preventative treatments, if your pet gets ill or injured you will have to pay for this too.One way to minimise your unexpected vet bills is to get insurance. This will make sure your pet is covered in the event of illness or injury. There are lots of pet insurance companies out there, all offering different levels of coverage. Like all insurance policies you should always read the small print!
Pets can bring so much joy to everyone’s lives and can make a home feel complete. However, they do come at a cost. Therefore, like all financial decisions, they need to be carefully considered and planned for before they arrive.
You can find more tips and suggestions on my blog at www.the-twenty-per-cent.com or on Twitter @TheTwentyPerce2
I have been writing about finance for two years now and was struck by the volume of tips I’ve picked up to help manage my own finances better. Realising a lot of people could also benefit
from these, I have recently launched a blog to share these insights. It’s important to note this does not constitute financial advice and I am not a qualified financial adviser.

What has happened in 2020? We have spent the last few years trying our hardest to rid the world of plastic and now we are all encouraged to buy more of it. Of course, I am talking about masks and gloves and perspex screens which are obviously needed for our safety.
But what is going to happen to all of this plastic when it is no longer needed? Our bins will once again be full of plastic, through no fault of our own.
I noticed as soon as I started getting out and about again after a 10 week self-isolation that gloves were strewn all over the countryside. I don’t understand! Do people wear gloves to protect themselves and then just choose to take them off and throw them out of their car windows when they drive home? It beggars belief, it really does. It’s right up there with dog owners who bother to pick up their dog’s poo, place it in a plastic poo bag, and then discard it in the hedge, or on the footpath, or even worse hang it from a tree. When did dog poo become a Christmas decoration?
I just don’t understand why plastic is not being disposed of correctly. Place used gloves and masks in your black bin (household waste bin) and they will be taken to Greatmoor Waste Facility* where they will be burned to produce steam, that in turn powers a turbine that generates electricity, to power homes here in Buckinghamshire.
It’s really rather straightforward and common sense to be honest.
I implore you all to please Let’s all do our bit …. and dispose of our rubbish properly. The countryside is blighted by ugly rubbish and wildlife are suffering as a result. Thank heavens Buckinghamshire doesn’t have a beach or else we would all be clearing up tonnes of waste, including human poo, that has been left behind by day trippers.
