PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

August 2021

It may be hot outside, but not too

hot to “THINK SNOW” & sign up

for one/two of our 2022 RSC Trips

Or Social/Activity Events!!!

Due to tighter restrictions on cut-off and penalty dates, most of our

weeklong trips have waiting lists or are approaching capacity! If you

haven’t already signed up for a 2022 ski trip, look at Aspen/Snowmass,

CO, or Mt. Bachelor, OR; both are great ski and/or winter destinations!

Keep your eye out for next year’s “Warm Weather Destination” too!

We are working on weekend trip destinations but we are in need of new

or experienced leaders to step up to the plate to run and/or mentor.

Due to the pandemic, things remain a bit different with cost a bit

higher, but that just means we need to be more creative by thinking out

of the box.

Our Activity and Social Directors have done a great job planning events

and happy hours, some greatly attended and some lightly attended due

to stormy weather or popular vacation weeks. Some of us braved

tropical storm “Elsa” of to attend River City Roll happy hour, what a

great location which we should try again on a fair-weather day! The

event at the American Civil War Museum on July 25th was well attended

despite the heat! Don’t forget the August 12th Happy Hours at the

Sunset Grill and the Scott’s Addition 1k Brew Thru event on August 22nd.

Check out our Event Calendar at www.richmondskiclub.org or on the

event page of the monthly Pacesetter.

We are pleased to announce that our monthly Membership/Social

Meetings will be resuming “in person” on the 1st Wednesday of each

month October through March as noted on the front page.

As always, my door is open to all questions & suggestions!

Passages We are sad to report the passing of a former

RSC Member

Ham Scherer

RSC president 1974-1975.

John Hamilton Scherer Jr., 80, of Richmond, died peacefully at home on June 26, 2021. Ham was an active member of the Richmond Ski Club, President from 1974-75. An absolutely beautiful skier, Ham skied with headphones on while listening to a waltz because he contended that a 3/4 time signature made for excellent turns. He never hit the slopes without a backpack filled with wine and cheese.

There are many types of policies from single trip to annual travel policies.

Some policies have limited cancellation reasons (work is generally not a valid reason to cancel) and some policies allow cancellation for any reason (these policies are generally more expensive)

There are many vendors offering policies, including online, through an insurance agent, or through a credit card used to purchase a trip. For any trip insurance you may wish to purchase, you must carefully read each policy

to fully understand exclusions and other limitations. Many policies may or may not be written specifically for COVID-19, but you need to understand all exclusions to your policy

Be aware of date restrictions on policy purchases. They may need to be purchased within a certain time period (often within 2 weeks) of signing up for a trip. “Sign up” dates may vary among carriers (i.e., date the deposit/

payment check is written, date check is deposited, credit card transaction date).

While the club will be looking at cancellation policies in upcoming contracts so that we are all protected, we also recommend you purchase Trip Insurance which can also help protect you in case of illness or injury prior to or on a trip.

Travel Insurance Considerations for Today’s COVID-19/Pandemic World

The uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 is making long-term planning of any sort tricky, and Richmond Ski Club members who wish to sign up for an RSC Trip may have concerns and are wondering what Travel Insurance Option would work best during such unfamiliar times. Force Majeure clauses may be in affect as well, but how they relate to various circumstances will vary depending on the insurance carrier, so be sure to ask.

The Richmond Ski Club Board of Directors strongly suggests that each of its members who are considering an RSC trip do their own research to determine the best options for their own comfort and needs. Travel insurance policies are the most comprehensive option but are often difficult to navigate. The RSC Board cannot stress the importance of reading all the fine print to be sure you fully understand what each policy will and will not cover.

First, here's how travel insurance generally works. These policies are designed to cover "unforeseen losses incurred while traveling" and include a wide range of things, from lost luggage to the cost of meals and accommodations during an unexpected delay to additional medical expenses resulting from an on-trip injury or illness.

Trip cancellation is typically included in standard policies and reimburses 100% of a traveler's prepaid and non-refundable expenses—if the reason for cancellation is on the policy's approved list. The most common covered reasons are a trip participant’s illness (including COVID-19 illness), injury, or death of the traveler/traveling companion, or a family member. Reasons such as inclement weather, terrorism, and natural disasters may be included but check the fine print. Standard Policies must be purchased prior to final trip payment to tour operator.

Most policies will not cover any cancellation related to Covid-19. To be covered for trip cancellation, the impacting event must be listed in their insurance policy certificate. Viral outbreaks, pandemics, and epidemics aren’t typically listed within a standard policy. Cancelling because they one is too scared or concerned to travel won’t be covered.

A Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) policy may provide an exception. It really does mean for “nearly any reason” (other than fear of travel); i.e., my dog is sick, not liking the snow forecast, not getting along with traveling companion, etc. However, not all CFARs cover cancellation due to pandemic situations or COVID-19-related travel fears, so be sure you understand the reasons for cancelling that are listed in your insurance certificate!

CFARs have very strict rules on when the policy must be purchased or added to an existing policy and the date seems to vary between carriers. Most state that a policy must be purchased within 14 days of the date on your check or charge for initial trip payment. Other policies say 20 days, and still others say 24 hours. Be sure to do your research prior to making your first payment.

Generally, a "cancel for any reason" policy covers no more than 75% of the full cost your trip if cancellation reason is not explicitly listed as covered within your policy certificate (if reason is listed as allowable the 100% refund will apply). To cancel for any reason, you must cancel no later than 48 hours prior to trip departure date. CFAR policies typically cost about 40% more than a standard policy.

NOTE: “time is of the essence” if considering a CFAR policy – DON’T DELAY!
