20th Annual RQHBA Showcase & Sale

Welcome to the RQHBA SaleThank you for attending the 20th Annual Select Performance & Showcase Sale of the Ranchers Quarter Horse Breeders Association. We are excited about this years sale featuring what we think is one of the best set of horses ever! We look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones on sale day.

Come to the sale grounds at 7:30 a.m. for the Don Brunner Yearling Futurity followed by the Ranch Horse Futurity. See sale horses in action starting at 9 a.m. for the Performance Preview and compare foals side by side during the Weanling Showcase. Visit with the breeders about their programs. Remember all foals will be halter broke, gentle, and eligible for the 2021 RQHBA Futurities. Breakfast and lunch will be available on the grounds.

About RQHBAThe Ranchers Quarter Horse Breeders Association was first organized in the spring of 2000 when a group of South Dakota quarter horse breeders met to formulate a plan to market their foals, and has since evolved into a highly recognized Performance and Prospect Sale & Futurity, featuring the top offerings from member ranches. Ranches must apply for membership and participate as a Guest Consignor for at least one year; before being selected for membership by the RQHBA to assure that their program meets our high standards.

Each ranch may not sell more than 50% of the current year’s foal production. The purpose of this rule is to maintain a high quality sale without having a total production sale for any one member. Besides the current 8 ranches in western South Dakota and northeastern Wyoming that are RQHBA members, there are also about 20 high quality invitational saddle horses being offered in the sale.

Sale RequirementsAll horses sold at the RQHBA are inspected for quality. The sale horses are vet checked by a veterinarian when they are Coggins tested. They are then inspected by a screening committee and sale veterinarian on sale day. All foals are halter broke and gentle for the sale. The foals are presented in the showcase so buyers can compare foals side by side before the sale. Riding horses must be owned for at least one year and will also preview before the sale.

Quality of HorsesAs a group we strive to breed horses that are sound and structurally correct. We are confident the quality of our horses will meet your highest expectations. This is a sale where you can find a truly versatile horse suited for the arena, the show ring, trail riding or ranch work. All 2020 foals are eligible for the 2021 Don Brunner Futurity and the RQHBA 2 & 3 year old Ranch Horse Futurities as they come of age. Ranch visits are always welcome. All horses will have a clean bill of health and coggins to travel anywhere in the country.

You will find member, guest consignor and invitational rider names and phone numbers here in the catalog. We encourage you to contact each individual about horses that interest you.

All horses are available for inspection at the respective ranches anytime prior to sale day. Know that all horses in the sale are selected from a larger group and each ranch has more at home like the ones that are represented at the sale. Your visit is always welcome!

Covid-19We want you to be safe, so in accordance with CDC Guidelines for Covid-19; we will have hand sanitizer stations, will be disinfecting common areas, have masks available for those that would like them and ask all that attend to practice social distancing. If you are sick, or someone in your family has been sick or have traveled out of the area we ask that you stay home, stay safe and view the sale on the internet.

20th Annual RQHBA Showcase & Sale

1. The highest bidder is to be the buyer. If any dispute arises between two or more bidders, sole authority to settle the dispute is reserved by the auctioneer and his decision will be final. The auctioneer reserves the right to reject any or all bids.

2. Every effort has been made to ensure correctness in the catalog and in most cases information quoted is taken from official records. However, RQHBA, sales management, auctioneer, announcer assume and will accept no responsibility for errors or omissions. Announced changes in catalog information on sale day take precedence over printed material.

3. RQHBA, sales management, Besler’s Cadillac Ranch and consignors shall not be responsible for any accident that may occur to spectators, buyers, horses or loss or injury in any way to the sale, during or after the sale.

4. Payment in full must be made to the sales clerk immediately after the sale. Terms of the sale are cash, personal check or credit card (US Funds). We accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover. All credit card purchases will incur an additional 4% fee per transaction.

5. All known blemishes or defects will be called before bidding begins.

6. All horses become the responsibility and the property of the buyer when they leave the sale ring. Buyer must make arrangements for care of horses at their own risk until delivery is taken.

7. We strongly urge buyers to thoroughly examine horses that interest them. All sales are absolute and final.

8. No horses will be sold before the sale.9. Registration papers: management will send registration papers for transfer.

Registration papers will not be sent before 20 banking days after the sale. Buyer will be charged $20 for AQHA member transfer or $75 for non-member transfer, which includes a one year AQHA membership.

10. Sales management, RQHBA, the auctioneer and the announcer act as agents for the seller, but assume no liability. Any representations made are between the seller and the buyer.

11. Releases: No horses are to be removed until settled for. In order for horses to be removed from the grounds you must show your sales receipt. Make sure all information on the receipt is correct. Also, be sure to give the receipt to the person ultimately responsible for removing your horse from the sale grounds.

Wow!! What a year it has been!! Pandemic, social distancing, riots and an election year. Our hope is that our nation goes into 2021 a much healthier nation.

Meanwhile at the ranch, it has been a busy year with lambing, calving, foaling, brandings, cows to summer pasture and now haying. Most important, is the time we get to spend with our family..

Our ranch is located north of Enning, SD which is 60 miles east of Sturgis. We have been raising Quarter Horses since 1997. All colts are eligible to compete in the RQHBA Futurities and AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenge.

Ranch, Rodeo or Pleasure. Our goal is to produce a versatile horse with color, conformation, kind willing dispositions, athletic ability to excel in any discipline.

Our mares are diverse with foundation breeding, a few cow bred and speed bred mares. Mares are selected for our breeding program based on disposition, conformation, pedigree and athletic ability. Most of our mares are ridden prior to entering our breeding program.

This year we will be offering colts for sale at RQHBA out of Sir Bea Cowboy, Watch Me Go Cowboy, Paddys Shine and CS Arc Light (Brad and Becca Andrews stallion).

Colts will be for sale at RQHBA sale, and Sugar Bars Legacy Sale in Sheridan WY and will offer a few private treaty at the ranch.

Our best reward in the horse business is to hear of the buyers success with a colt we have raised.

We have been raising Quarter Horses since 1972. We are constantly working on developing strong pedigrees that will make multi-talented horses. We currently stand 3 stallions. Harlans Top Gun, is siring colts that have his looks, disposition, athletic ability and, as an added bonus, color. Sabre Charged, is 25% Harlan. Sabre has 27 AQHA performance points in heading and heeling and is a World Show Qualifier, and is producing point earning offspring. What a different year this had been! Last fall we had to lay to rest the Mr. Royal Blake who has been the cornerstone of our program since the beginning. We are fortunate to have 2 of his daughters in our broodmare mare band, and another one that we are riding.

Boonylensma gave us a scare this spring when he fell on the ice, and injured a hind leg, so we only turned him out with 3 mares this year. Its hard to believe he is 21! We have 4 of his daughters in our broodmare band, and a stud colt that we have kept as a prospect.

Our ‘young’ stud, Shield Five Ole Cat, is 10. He has accumulated AQHA points in Ranch Riding, Heading, Pole Bending, and the Stakes Race in limited showing. We are working towards his ROM. ‘Ole’ is one of our go-to horses (especially for Susan), and has drug thousands of calves to the fire in his life. He is a very versatile horse, helping to prove our philosophy that a ranch horse can do anything!

The kids continue to be an active part of our horses, and we are so lucky that they share our passion of horses! I strive to produce foals with super dispositions, conformation, strapped with colorful hides and the ability to compete in any venue.The mares and stallions run in large pastures with minimal human contact until I gather the 1st of August to halter break the foals.

My parents always told me as a baby, I couldn’t tolerate ordinary milk so I was raised on wild mares milk. Guess you could say horses have been in my blood for a lifetime.

The Wetz Stirrup Ranch is an over 100 year old working ranch; it is located in western SD along the Belle Fourche River.

The ranch was awarded the South Dakota Quarter Horse Producers of the year for 2015. They were a feature story in the AQHA Ranching Journal March of 2017 issue.

Welcome to the 2020 RQHBA sale! What a Wild and Crazy year this has been! We hope you find what you are looking for at this High Quality sale! The Huxtable ranch is located northeast of Red Owl, SD which is 30 miles southwest of Faith and was homesteaded in 1910 by Bobbi’s granddad, who moved to this area from Oklahoma. We raise a commercial herd of Black Angus cows and use Limousine bulls plus a small band of broodmares. Our goal is to produce stout, ranch minded, kind, and athletic horses who have a strong cow sense but can go to the arena and perform as well.

We have raised Quarter Horses since 2000. We have used some of our colts on the ranch and every one of them has shown lots of cow and athleticism, willing to do everything we have asked of them. Previous buyers have reported the same results from arena to ranch to trail.

MR BLACKBURN SALUTE is a grandson of SUGAR BARS and MR BLACKBURN 41. He is a well-balanced grey stallion with a great disposition. He is very person friendly and comes to meet you with a nicker. You can walk up to him in the pasture and catch and load (even during breeding season), a trait that he passes on to his colts.

We live 20 miles north of Belle Fourche, SD and both of us grew up in the area on ranches. We ranch with our kids, Casen- 11 and Kyler -8. We ranch with Kristy’s parents, Ralph and Becky Crago. We raise quarter horses, commercial angus cattle and sheep. We use our horses on the ranch for calving, branding, sorting, doctoring and trailing cattle. We also like to compete on our horses in the arena when time allows. We have had success in the Ranching Heritage Challenges with limited showing. We also like to team rope and Clete enjoys competing in the ranch rodeos and picking up- riding our home-raised horses. In 2017 Crago Cattle Company was honored to be chosen for the AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeder of the Year award. This was a huge honor for the Crago family.

Kristy grew up riding the Beckwith Dun bred horses and we continue to keep this bloodline alive. He was the cornerstone of the Crago horse program from the beginning. The rocking chair horse brand has been stamped on our colts for close to 60 years.

Love’s Jessie James is an own son of Taylor Jess Tivio and by Beckwith Lobo. My uncle, Chuck Crago owned Taylor Jess Tivio who sired money earners, pt earners in NRCHA and AQHA performance ROM tie-down roping, heading, heeling. He was foundation pedigree with crosses to King, Poco Bueno, Jessie James, Leo and Sugar Bars. Beckwith Lobo was a full sister to Ralph Crago’s top gelding that went to the AQHA World show in Team Penning and CONQHA Super Horse champion. He was also on the team that won the SDRA team penning finals 4x.

Loves Jessie James produces foals with great minds, bone, good feet, big hips, cowsense and a running walk that is so much fun to ride when covering the big pastures. “Jessie” is registered with the American Buckskin Registry Assoc. and the NFQHA. Roped the dummy tons of times, gone to branding and roped calves, and he has been started in heading and heeling this summer. He has also been started on the barrels and is coming along nicely. RQHBA Ranch Horse FuturityAny horse purchased from a member through the RQHBA sale that turned 2 or 3 years old in 2020 can compete for cash! Mares, geldings and stallions can compete against others in their age division for $500 per class, plus all entry fees will be added to each ages pot in 2020.

Entry fees are $75 if paid by Aug 1. Late entries will be accepted for an additional fee. Following is what the 2 and 3 year olds will be judged on:

1. Gate (Horseback).2. Bridge (Walk Over).3. Logs (Trot Thru).4. Log (Drag Figure 8).5. Reining Pattern (will be posted morning of the futurity).6. Dismount on the right side and pick up the right near

leg.7. Exit Arena

• First Place in each class wins 60% of the pot, second place wins 30% of the pot and third place wins 10% of the pot.

• In the event of a tie, the horse with the highest reining score will win.

• Participants will have three attempts at each obstacle before passing. Participants have the option of skipping any obstacle the rider feels would not do their pattern justice.
