IntroductionWhat does it mean to adapt?What does it mean to assist?What technology can you
think of that is helps adapt or assist people every day?
What is Bioengineering? Bioengineering is the development of
technology in the fields of biology and medicine.
The work of bioengineers help people stay healthy, grow food, and make other materials they need.
Bioengineers use the science of living things to create technology and the technology to change living things.
Bioengineering and medicine Bioengineers have developed
many tools to help doctors diagnose disease. Examples: CAT scanners and
MRI machines.
Other bioengineered products help treat diseases. Examples: insulin for diabetics,
antibiotics, and medicine
Adaptive Devices Some bioengineers design devices to help
people with disabilities.
An adaptive device is a device that is changed or adapted to use by a person with a disability (permanent changes). Examples: voice activated computer, braille
keys, doorbells that flash a light, automatic doors, corrective surgery, respirator, etc.
Assistive Devices An assistive device is any kind of
technology that helps a disabled person with their daily life (temporary changes, that can be removed). Examples: hearing aids, artificial limbs,
crutches, wheelchairs, glasses, contact lenses, etc.
Activity Think about adaptive and assistive
devices. Do any have unintended consequences that need to be improved?
Activity Directions Design a device that would help
someone with a disability. Illustrate your device, labeling its special features. At the bottom, identify whether your device would be considered adaptive or assistive. Explain the intended benefits of te device. How would it help someone with a disability? Does it have any unintended consequences?
Explanation Many people are unable to walk. While
wheelchairs help them get around, they are continuously sitting down. I have an assistive device that allows individuals to move while sitting or standing. The benefit of my device is that it increases blood flow to the legs and allows the user to change positions. An unintended consequence it may cause it that the person may fall if not strapped in properly.

Engineering Design Process
Yesterday we learned that technology was defined as the application of science to make useful products and tools.
How do scientists and engineers create these new products?
They use the engineering design process.
Number your notes 1-7. As we go through this presentation, write down each step of the design process.
Step 1: Identify the Problem The first step in the engineering design
process is IDENTIFYING THE PROBLEM.
While automobiles were intended to speed up transportation, they also cause many problems.
What is one problem of the automobile?
Step 2: Research After the problem has been identified,
background RESEARCH must be conducted.
Research can provide current solutions to the problem and help explore other options.
When scientists realized how many injuries were being caused by car accidents, what do you think they researched?
Step 3: BrainstormUse the background research to
BRAINSTORM possible solutions. Take notes, sketch ideas, and select the best
possible solution.
Quick Check: Noah and Jackson realized that many people
do not wear their seatbelt. They think they should design a product that will encourage passengers to wear their seatbelt. What step should they complete after they have identified the problem?
Step 5: Test and Evaluate TEST the design to see if it meets the needs of the
problem.
Collect data using the prototype.
EVALUATE the data and the design to determine if it solved the problem.
When evaluating, identify the benefits and risks, of the design.
If the prototype does not solve the problem, what should scientists do?
Step 6: Modify and Retest If the prototype does not solve the
problem, MODIFY it.
Ask: What worked with the original prototype and what could work better?
Make the necessary changes, RETEST, and re-evaluate new data.
STEP 7: Share Results
SHARE the solution with others.
Scientists, government agencies, and citizens must decide if the benefits of the solution outweigh the risks.
If the benefits outweigh the risks, they could make it available to consumers.

as possible using spaghetti and marshmallows. Limited supplies of materials are available. Pieces of spaghetti can be broken into desired lengths.
Rules 1. only the materials provided may be used.
The highest tower at the end of the period will be the winner.
2. the judge’s decision in all matters is final! 3. you have to work as a team of engineers
and come to an agreement on how to build the tower.
