Selection of a HVAC SystemSelection of a HVAC System

Geothermal or Conventional Heating and Air Conditioning

The Mechanical Engineer prepared an Energy Model for the buildingusing the proposed materials for the exterior building envelope and

the proposed hours of operation from the Feasibility Study.

Conventional System consists of roof top mounted gas heating andelectric cooling units.

Geothermal System consists of approximately 40 450 bore holeson the site, piping, manifolds and heat pump units throughout thebuilding.

The proposed geothermal system has an additional up front

installation cost of approximately $400,000 over a conventionalsystem.

The energy model showed a simple payback of 40 years.

Selection of a HVAC SystemSelection of a HVAC System

Geothermal or Conventional Heating and Air Conditioning

The payback of 40 years seemed counterintuitive to what we hadheard about geothermal systems.

We collected real world data from Haverford Rec Center, YMCA andthe existing Township Building as a check.

On a cost per year per square foot of building the Township Building

uses $2.69, the gas system at the Rec Center uses $1.46 and the RecCenter with geothermal would use $1.25.

Due to the low cost of natural gas and the high installation cost ofgeothermal the cost savings on the geothermal system is

approximately $8200 per year. Equal to over 40 year payback.

The BOS needs to provide direction on selection of an HVAC system.

Other Energy Saving OptionsOther Energy Saving Options

Due to the current lack of rebates and grants solar power and windpower are not viable options.

Daylight harvesting and motion detectors will be used for lightingcontrol.

All lights will be either LED or fluorescent.

Use of sophisticated HVAC control systems.

The bulk of the drawings will start to be created as we move intothe Construction Document Phase.

Ongoing coordination between all the consultants.

Proposed interior finishes, materials and colors will likely bepresented at the next progress meeting.

Begin to review options for the Cardio and Weight RoomEquipment.
