A Welcome Message

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. We welcome you to St. John’s, especially if you are here for the first time. St. John’s is an Anglican Church, affiliated with the Anglican Church in North America. Through our affiliation with the Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON), we are a member province of the worldwide Anglican Communion.

The people of St. John’s endeavor to be a church where the transforming gospel of Jesus Christ is proclaimed with clarity in our preaching, teaching, worship, and evangelism. We strive to be a people who respond to the challenges of our time and the needs of our community with Christian wisdom and moral integrity. At St. John’s we care deeply about passing on the “faith once delivered” to our children and grandchildren because we have tasted and seen that it is good news for all people in every place and age.

While you are with us, our greatest hope is that you encounter the risen Christ and that his presence brings you peace and joy. We are delighted that you are worshiping with us today, and we hope you will join us again soon!

Yours in Christ,

Fr. Bryan Hollon, Rector

The Summary of the Law

The Celebrant then reads the Summary of the Law.

The Lessons (pg. 126, BCP)

The Old Testament Reading

The Reader first says

A Reading from Joel 2:28-32

28 “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. 29 Even on the male and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit. 30 “And I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. 31 The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. 32 And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom the Lord calls.

After the Reading, the Reader may say The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. A Canticle Reading QUAERITE DOMINUM Seek the Lord while he wills to be found (pg. 79 in the BCP) Seek the Lord while he wills to be found; * call upon him when he draws near. Let the wicked forsake their ways * and the evil ones their thoughts; And let them turn to the Lord, and he will have compassion, * and to our God, for he will richly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, * nor your ways my ways, says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, * so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. For as rain and snow fall from the heavens * and return not again, but water the earth, Bringing forth life and giving growth, * seed for sowing and bread for eating, So is my word that goes forth from my mouth; * it will not return to me empty; But it will accomplish that which I have purposed, * and prosper in that for which I sent it. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; * as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. A Reading from the Psalter

Psalm 50:1-15 (pg. 332, BCP) 1 The Lord, even the most mighty God, has spoken * and called the world, from the rising of the sun to the going down thereof. 2 Out of Zion, perfect in her beauty, *

has God shone forth in glory. 3 Our God shall come and shall not keep silence; *

there shall go before him a consuming fire, and a mighty tempest shall be stirred up round about him.

4 He shall call to the heavens above, * and to the earth beneath, that he may judge his people:

5 “Gather my faithful together unto me, * those who have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.”

6 And the heavens shall declare his righteousness, * for God himself is Judge. 7 “Hear, O my people, and I will speak; *

I myself will testify against you, O Israel, for I am God, even your God. 8 I will not rebuke you because of your sacrifices, or for your burnt offerings, *

because they are always before me. 9 I will take no bull calf out of your house, *

nor he-goat out of your folds. 10 For all the beasts of the forest are mine, * and so are the cattle upon a thousand hills. 11 I know all the birds of the air, *

and the wild beasts of the field are in my sight. 12 If I were hungry, I would not tell you, *

for the whole world is mine, and all that is therein. 13 Do you think that I will eat the flesh of bulls * and drink the blood of goats? 14 Offer unto God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, * and pay your vows unto the Most High, 15 And call upon me in the time of trouble; * so will I hear you, and you shall praise me.” At the end of the Psalm is said Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. The New Testament Reading

The Reader first says

A Reading from James 5:13-20

13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. 17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six

months it did not rain on the earth. 18 Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit. 19 My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, 20 let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.

After the Reading, the Reader may say

The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. A Poetry Reading

“The Holdfast,” by George Herbert

I threaten'd to observe the strict decree Of my dear God with all my power and might; But I was told by one it could not be; Yet I might trust in God to be my light. "Then will I trust," said I, "in Him alone." "Nay, e'en to trust in Him was also His: We must confess that nothing is our own." "Then I confess that He my succour is." "But to have nought is ours, not to confess That we have nought." I stood amaz'd at this, Much troubled, till I heard a friend express That all things were more ours by being His; What Adam had, and forfeited for all, Christ keepeth now, who cannot fail or fall. The Gospel Reading

All standing, the Deacon or Priest reads the Gospel, first saying

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew

People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

18 In the morning, as he was returning to the city, he became hungry. 19 And seeing a fig tree by the wayside, he went to it and found nothing on it but only leaves. And he said to it, “May no fruit ever come from you again!” And the fig tree withered at once. 20 When the disciples saw it, they marveled, saying, “How did the fig tree wither at once?” 21 And Jesus answered them, “Truly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what has been

done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ it will happen. 22 And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.”

Nicene Creed, (pg. 127, BCP)

All stand to recite the Nicene Creed, the Celebrant first saying

Let us confess our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed:

Celebrant and People

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, visible and invisible. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son

who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers of the People (pg. 128) The Celebrant says Let us pray for the Church and for the world, saying, “hear our prayer.” The Reader Continues For the peace of the whole world, and for the well-being and unity of the people of God. Reader Lord, in your mercy: People Hear our prayer. For Foley Beach, our Archbishop, and John Miller, our Bishop, and for all the clergy and people of our Diocese and Congregation. Reader Lord, in your mercy: People Hear our prayer. For all those who proclaim the Gospel at home and abroad; and for all who teach and disciple others. Reader Lord, in your mercy: People Hear our prayer. For our brothers and sisters in Christ who are persecuted for their faith. Reader Lord, in your mercy: People Hear our prayer. For our nation, for those in authority, and for all in public service. Reader Lord, in your mercy: People Hear our prayer. For all those who are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity.

Reader Lord, in your mercy: People Hear our prayer. For all those who have departed this life in the certain hope of the resurrection, in thanksgiving let us pray. Reader Lord, in your mercy: People Hear our prayer. The Celebrant concludes with this or some other appropriate Collect. O Lord our God, accept the fervent prayers of your people; in the multitude of your mercies, look with compassion upon us and all who turn to you for help; for you are gracious, O lover of souls, and to you we give glory, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. The Confession and Absolution of Sin (pg. 129-130) The Deacon or other person appointed says the following Let us humbly confess our sins to Almighty God. Silence The Deacon and People kneel as able and pray Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against your holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done; and apart from your grace, there is no health in us. O Lord, have mercy upon us. Spare all those who confess their faults. Restore all those who are penitent, according to your promises declared to all people in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may now live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of your holy Name. Amen. The Bishop or Priest stands and says Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who in his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those who sincerely repent and with true faith turn to him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Comfortable Words (pg. 130) The Celebrant may then say one or more of the following sentences, first saying

Page 11: August 2nd, 2020 Proper 13 · People And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. The Collect for Purity (pg. 124, BCP) The Celebrant prays (and the People may be invited to

pg. 11

Hear the Word of God to all who truly turn to him. God so loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 The Peace (pg. 130) Celebrant The Peace of the Lord be always with you. People And with your spirit. Then the Ministers and People may greet one another in the name of the Lord. The Offertory (pg. 131) Then the Ministers and People may greet one another in the name of the Lord.

Ascribe unto the Lord the honor due unto his Name; bring offerings and come into his courts.

Piano Music, by Maira Liliestadt

The People stand

Celebrant Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for everything in heaven and on earth is yours; yours is the Kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as Head above all. All things come from you, O Lord,

People And of your own have we given you.

1 CHRONICLES 29:11, 14T The Sursum Corda (pg. 132, BCP)

The People remain standing. The Celebrant faces them and sings or says The Lord be with you. People And with your spirit. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Here a Proper Preface (pages 152-158) is normally sung or said.

Page 12: August 2nd, 2020 Proper 13 · People And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. The Collect for Purity (pg. 124, BCP) The Celebrant prays (and the People may be invited to

pg. 12

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

The Sanctus (pg. 132, BCP)

Celebrant and People sing

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the Name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The Prayer of Consecration The People stand or kneel. The Celebrant continues

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and when we had sinned against you and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent your only Son Jesus Christ into the world for our salvation. By the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary he became flesh and dwelt among us. In obedience to your will, he stretched out his arms upon the Cross and offered himself once for all, that by his suffering and death we might be saved. By his resurrection he broke the bonds of death, trampling Hell and Satan under his feet. As our great high priest, he ascended to your right hand in glory, that we might come with confidence before the throne of grace.

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it, and here* may break the bread; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing the wine to be consecrated.

On the night that he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it,* and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my Body, which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.”

Likewise, after supper, Jesus took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the forgiveness of sins: Whenever you drink it, do this in remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Celebrant and People

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

pg. 13

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, and we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Word and Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Sanctify us also, that we may worthily receive this holy Sacrament, and be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us and we in him. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us with all your saints into the joy of your heavenly kingdom, where we shall see our Lord face to face.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever.  Amen.

The Lord’s Supper (pg. 134, BCP)

The Celebrant then says

And now as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray:

Celebrant and People together pray

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Fraction (pg. 135, BCP)

pg. 14

We do not presume to come to this your table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your abundant and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table; but you are the same Lord whose character is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us.  Amen.

The Agnus Dei (pg. 136, BCP)

The following or some other suitable anthem may be sung or said here

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us.

And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord.

To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.
