FAMILY FRIDAYS!
We are excited to announce a new ministry of the church, Family
Fridays! Join us the second Friday of each month for a variety of fellowship and
educational activities for the entire family including parenting workshops, movie
nights, and the all-important, Parents’ Night Out!
The first Family Friday will be on September 9 at 6:30 pm. Families are
invited to Room 151 for a meal together and then parents will move into a
parenting workshop based on the series, Spiritual Parenting while children will
enjoy a movie and craft time.
Stay tuned for the full schedule, which
will be posted soon! Please RSVP to Jennifer
at [email protected] or call the
church office to let us know how many in your
family will be attending.
BISHOP GRANT HAGIYA ASSIGNED
TO THE LOS ANGELES AREA
At the recent meeting of the Jurisdictional
Conference held in Phoenix, Arizona, the episcopal
committee assigned both the new and several continuing
bishops to areas of service. Usually a bishop serves an area
as spiritual leader and presiding officer of one or more
conferences for 8 years, 12 if special missional needs are
being fulfilled by a specific bishop.
The committee met following the election of the Bishop Karen Oliveto
(on the 17th ballot) and assigned her to the Denver Area which includes churches
in Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, and Montana. Our current Bishop Minerva
Carcaño will relocate to the San Francisco area and serve with the California-
Nevada Annual Conference. Bishop Elaine Stanovsky will “return home” to the
Seattle area and lead the congregations and ministries of the Oregon-Idaho,
Pacific NorthWest, and Alaska Missionary conferences. Bishop Robert
Hoshibata will continue his service to the people of the Desert-Southwest Annual
Conference.
Having served churches in the California-Pacific Annual Conference as
pastor and as Los Angeles District Superintendent, Bishop Grant Hagiya also
“comes home” to be our episcopal leader beginning September 1, 2016.
First United Methodist Church of Glendale will be the site of one of
several celebrations held to welcome Bishop Hagiya. Plan to attend this Sunday
afternoon gathering on October 16th and greet our new bishop.

Successful Blood Drive!
Thank you
for all who helped
with our second
Red Cross blood
drive on Sunday,
July 24th. It was
with your help
that we reached
100% of our
blood drive goal! We saved up to 72 lives with
our collections. Please help us continue to save
lives at our next Blood Drive in January 2017.
Sierra Service Project
From Saturday, July 30, until
Sunday, August 7, our youth traveled to
Smith River, California, where they
participated in Sierra Service Project.
They contributed to a variety of
construction projects, grew in their relationships with
one another, and strengthened their commitment to God.
The group will be presenting pictures and experiences
during the Sunday luncheon on September 4.
IT'S HANDBELL RINGING TIME AND
THERE IS PLACE FOR YOU!
Our handbell program
resumes in September and
there are openings for anyone
interested in one of our three
choirs.
The adult groups begin
rehearsals on Monday Sept
12. The Carillons, levels 1-2
meet at 6:00 pm and the Wesleyans, levels 3-4 meet at
7:30 pm.
Our youth choir, the Chancel Ringers (grades 6
through college), have their first rehearsal on Sunday
Sept 11 at 12:00 pm after morning worship. All
rehearsals are held in the music center. Please contact
Scott Leggett at (562) 652-6620 for more information.

Sunday Lunch Program Returns to GFUMC for September
For the four Sundays of September, the Sunday Lunch Program will return to Glendale FUMC to
provide a meal and an opportunity for fellowship to community members in need. New and returning
volunteers are welcome!!
SLP is a collaboration of 9 area churches—7 host churches and 2 support congregations—that have
shared in Sunday hunger ministries since 1995 through what was then called Food for Body and Soul.
Most of the church partners were active also in the former Salvation Army Program known as The Lord’s
Kitchen—remembered by some in our congregation as Inasmuch.
Volunteers are needed after worship, beginning about 12:00 or 12:15 p.m. in the kitchen to prepare
for the 1:00 p.m. lunch, served in the North Wing of Carlson Fellowship Center.
Please contact Joylene Wagner (818-246-0163 or [email protected]) with any questions or to
volunteer for one or more Sundays. Whatever help you can give is welcome. You can come for set-up,
serving, clean-up, or all of it. We’re usually done by 2:30 p.m.
While much of the food we provide comes from the Olive Garden Harvest program, contributions
of favorite dishes, fruits, or vegetables are always welcome. Monetary contributions can also be made to
GFUMC, with the notation “Sunday Lunch Program.”

SOUND SYSTEMS TRAINING
As Sam Weissen concludes his volunteer service at the
sound board so that he can worship with his family, we give
thanks for his labors as well as for the labors of Almar
Mendoza. With the absence of Sam, we wish to train several
more volunteers to serve on Sunday morning as well as during
other events in the worship and fellowship life of the church.
Almar Mendoza will be leading a training for our sound
systems on Saturday, September 17, 2016 from 2:00 to 4:00
p.m. in the Sanctuary. In addition to the training, Almar will welcome those involved in the training to
join him on a specific Sunday as he “runs the system.”
Sound technicians set up microphones, often carry out sound checks, monitor and adjust sound
levels, and return equipment to the sound room. They may also be asked to create a CD of the service.
Sound technician service for weddings and memorial services includes payment for services; Sunday
morning service is a volunteer position.
If interested in joining several others in learning how to operate our sound system, please call the
church office at 818.243.2105 to indicate your intention to be part of the training.

CONFIRMATION STUDY
We are currently in the process of
organizing a confirmation experience for youth.
As a result of this study, youth may wish to
reaffirm their baptismal vows and become a
professing member of this congregation of The
United Methodist Church.
The study includes a variety of learnings through a
number of experiences and events.
If the youth in your family have not yet taken part
in confirmation, please notify Pastor Daniel at
[email protected] or call the church office
and leave the name of the youth.
