KEITH YAMAKAWA WINS WCST REGULAR DIVISION KEVIN GANNON WINS 37TH WCST SUPER SENIOR TITLE

by Dick SandersANAHEIM—With an increase in entries for the Regular Division at Linbrook Bowl in

Anaheim, CA last week-end, Keith Yamakawa (Porter Ranch) won his 1st WCST Title, and it was a battle all the way in this 6 man finals, bowling 6 games each.

The one day format had bowlers bowling 8 games in the qualifying. Followed by a short break, then bowling the finals. Mark Fisser led the qualifying with 1861, and in 2nd place, Keith trailed by only 28 pins. Keith’s 1st game in the finals of 279, put him right into the lead, and Ron Sargent, who started in 4th place, closed to be in 2nd place going into the position match, only 5 pins behind Keith. Keith won the match 228-218, and with the Bonus pins of 30 added on, ended up winning the tournament by 47 pins. Tim Tripp, who finished 3rd, made a great run on the last game rolling 270, and passed Mark Fisser for that spot. Mark had the high game of the finals with 286.

Top 2: 1st Place, Keith Yamakawa, $750.00, 2nd Place, Ron Sargent, $560.00. 21 Bowlers entered and 7 checks paid out for $2,920.00.

WCST would like to thank our hosting center, their GM, Mr. John Havales, and his employees. Thanks to Ben Laney for doing the brackets, and to the bowlers that entered the tournament. Thanks to our coverage sponsor, EBONITE INTERNATIONAL CO.

****SUPER SENIOR NEWS****Another WCST Title, #37, for Kevin Gannon, winning the Super Senior Division, and

moving his Life-Time Earnings to $101, 525.00. Kevin, qualified 2nd behind the qualify-ing leader, Mike Sheridan, as only 34 pins separated the 1st 4 places to start the 6 man finals.

After Game #1, Kevin was down by 79 pins, but a big 267 game in Game #2, gave him the lead, only to drop to 4th after Game #3, but this champion rallied to win his next two games, and held a 1 pin lead over Mike Sheridan, going into the position match.

Kevin beat Mike 238 to 174, and won this title for the day. Jim Lesiuk, who was in 3rd place, won his match and slipped by Mike for 2nd Place by only 2 pins. Top 2: 1st Place, Kevin Gannon, $750.00, 2nd Place: Jim Lesiuk, $600.00. 7 checks paid out for $3,065.00. 22 Bowlers entered. 12 Tournaments in 2011 paid out, $166,112.00. 333 Tournaments paid out $3,544,120.00.

ABTA Big Pot Winners at CAL BOWL (L-R) Freddie Catamisan, and Patricia Lin shared the Match series of $682, $341 each, and Wilson Cheung didn’t bowl well in the 3rd game but it was the BEST Game of the night for all at CAL as he won a sweet $3.500 Match Game Pot. Best 125 game he ever had claims Wilson:-) all are ABTA Regulars and fine people.

COVINA—On July 10, 2011 the San Gabriel Valley USBC held their Annual Open Meeting and Award Ceremonies. The meeting was held at BRC Covina Bowl at 11:00 AM in a room that filled up quickly and so did the heat of the day. There were approximately 40 guests along with the SGVUSBC board, most were there to receive their tournament awards.

Meeting began with salute to our flag, roll call then on to the business of the day, reports from the officers and directors. A report given by Association Manager Linda Johnson addressed the loss of members again the past season of over 400. Correspondence from USBC reported of the transfer of Bowlium Lanes to the San Gabriel Valley USBC beginning August 1, 2011. The transfer was at the request of the Owner/Proprietor of Bowlium Lanes not the SGVUSBC. SGVUSBC now has 10

centers again with 132 leagues including youth, seniors and adult a total membership 5500. Thinking back over the years that total was the total membership for the summer season, how sad is that!

Certificates were awarded to all the tournament bowlers, tro-phies were delayed and will be awarded during league play to the winners. Congratulations to all the tournament champions look to see you again next year.

The 2012 Local city tournaments will be held at Oak Tree Lanes and Bowlium Lanes. Oak Tree will host the Doubles and Singles events with Bowlium hosting the Team and Youth special events.

Upcoming Charity Tournaments for the SGVUSBC are; August 7th “Diabetes” No-Tap at BRC Covina Bowl; check in at 11:00 bowl Noon. Cost $25.00. On Sunday, October 2nd Bowlium Lanes will be host of the “Bowl for the Cure” tournament; then on No-vember 13th we will be at AMF Beverly Lanes for the BVL local

roll-off events. Check your bowling centers or the website for entries. sangabrielvalleyusbc.com Elections of Directors for two (2) terms were incumbents; Jason Carrillo; Joe Hilke; Bill Lapp;

Helen McKnight; Chris Pilios; Kristine Poepping; Ron Salazar and one newly elected board mem-ber Annette Riccelli. The board holds a special meeting following the AOM and elects the officers to serve.

President Janet Loucks called the special board meeting to order following close of the Annual Open Meeting for the election of Officers to serve a two year term. Janet gave her resignation as president due to problems with family and work. With her resignation the board had to elect a president to complete her term of one year. Joe Hilke was elected as president to finish her term of office; Chris Pilios elected as 1st Vice President and Nancy Carrillo 3rd Vice President for two year terms.

On a special note; Chris Pilios was surprised with his induction into the San Gabriel Valley USBC Hall of Fame for Meritorious Service. He joined the SGV in the 1980’s has bowled in sev-eral centers including Azusa Bowl, Covina Bowl, Chaparral Lanes and West Covina Lanes. He was recognized for his dedication to the SGVUSBC. He volunteered his help in the association office during the merge and after, chairing the BVL and became a certified lane certification when they needed help, you can find him on the lanes making award presentations and gathering bowlers to participate in local, state and national tournaments. He has served as delegate to both CA State and National Conventions. Chris has rolled a 300 game along with two (2) 299 games.

Congratulations Chris on a well deserved honor.

LAKEWOOD—Welcome everyone to the weekly edition of ABTA news. We returned to Cal Bowl this past weekend for a regular event, and we saw 181 entries in our one-day event. We had a decent shot for the tournament making the cut scores of +59 for the men and +23 for the women. The Super Seniors added to the board (3 men and 1 female) were Rick Llaneta (58), Vic Garcia (44), and Angie Nillo (-28). Super Seniors are men 63 and over, and for the women you just need to be a young 55. That would give us 44 bowlers making it to the semi-finals this week.

The top qualifier for the men was Jeff Wu with a +226, For the women it was Louie Soon with a +66. Each of them will get a paid entry into a fu-ture regular ABTA event. The top seed draws the Match Se-ries, and this time it was worth $682. Mr. Wu drew a 522. We had two bowlers that bowled this score, they were Patricia Lin, and Freddie Catamisan. They got $341 each. Great people and deserving for sure! We will now estimate the Match Series at $550. For the 3-6-9 qualifying, it was Jiradej Harnpatanakitpanich the last person standing of all the qualifiers and he would

ABTA Returns to Valley View Lanes for Handicap Bonus Special Eventgo for the $2,200 pot. But he missed on the second shot and received $50 consolation. The 3-6-9 will be $2,300 at Valley View Lanes.

In our optional doubles, finishing in first were Billy Chao and Jeff Wu with a 1557 for $160. Finishing second was Jeff Wu and Vuong Do with 1539 for $140. There was a total of $1360 paid out in doubles and 19 paid spots with low to cash of 1358.

In the semis we saw Vuong Do lead the field with a +130 to sit out and bowl for the title this week. Coming in second was Andrew Navarro with a +71 to sit out the first round. It took a +36 for the men and +28 for the women.

Do, top seed in semi-finals had the honor of drawing the Match Game worth $3,500. We have a back-up pot that is also maxed out $3,500, with a third pot now started, that will for sure put the Match Game at $3,500 for our next three events. Our top seed drew a 125. Wow, we had one of our bowlers match that score. It was the likeable Wilson Ch-eung. He takes home $3,500. He says it is the best 125 game he has ever bowled :_) He is truly one of the good guys. Congrats Mr. Cheung! We will have $3,500 this week at Val-

ley View Lanes, and continue to build on the third back-up pot, which is $705. Wilson is one of the nicest guys and finest gentlemen in the ABTA and is fitting that he hits the big pot, as he is well deserving to say the least if not less!

This week we had two new bowlers join us. Let us wel-come these new bowlers to the club, Kenneth Morris and Ray Ah-Hong. Good to see Ken come back after 9 years, and Ray is a great guy for sure. Glad to have them with us!

This would bring us to our top 16 Match Play finals. In the first round, the seven losers were Jeff Wu, William Garrett, Holden Au, Resty Sanchez, Andy Yu, Samson Kong, and Melvin Finner. They received checks of $100 each. In the sec-ond round, the losers were Art Lindsey, Chao Wang, Mikko Miller, and Andrew Navarro. They received checks of $110 each. This would get us down to the final five bowlers. At this point, our horses would be paying anywhere from a low of $52 (Pilbert Colian) to a high of $110 (Annaliza Agoncillo) depending on who would win. In this round we saw Annaliza Agoncillo (16th seed) bowl-ing Vic Garcia (8th seed). We saw Vic win in a battle to who would hold onto the game with

a key mark late, finish with a 145/192 to 157/184 and ad-vance to the next round. In the other match we saw Pilbert Co-lian (7th seed) bowling Marina Suos (5th seed). In this match, Marina would be the survivor of 3 166-156. She had won the first match by 1 pin with a bad shot in the tenth frame by Jeff Wu. The 2nd match she won over Mikko Miller who also opened in the tenth frame. The Lucky Lady Marina would fin-ish with a 195 to 181 game and advance. Pilbert and Annaliza finished in 4th and 5th getting checks for $120 each.

Our semi-final match was all set. It would be bowled on Lanes 15 and 16, and pitted our 8th seed against our 5th seed in the semi-final match. In the weekly “horses” we would see Vic paying $70 and Marina paying $82 if they would win their match. In a match that was close throughout the whole game. We would see one per-son mark and the other open, then they would trade and do the opposite. This continued all the way until the end. It was Marina finishing first and she would get a strike on the first ball, she would need only 9 pins total but would only get 8. That would set up a possible tie, as Vic just needed to get 20 to tie, or a double to win. He would leave the 4 pin on his first ball and pick that up. On his second shot he left the 6 pin. That sent Marinia on to the title match with a 128/183 to 135/182. One pin victory. Vic would finish in 3rd place and take home $200. For those lucky “investors” that had Ma-rina as a horse, she paid $82.

The title game was set on Lanes 13 and 14. We would see two great ABTA support-ers bowling each other and both were crowd favorites, in Marina Suos vs Vuong Do. Vuong would lead off first and started with a spare. This was another close match, as were all the matches through the night. Vuong would continue to try to find his shot, and get close but he would struggle to get a double. Again, Marina would finish in the 10th frame first, and she got the first mark and then needed to get decent count on her fill ball to lock out Vuong, but she got only 3 pins, thus leaving the door open. Vuong would come up needing to get 3 strikes to win his 5th tournament by 1 pin, he would get the first, and come up high on the 2nd ball hop-ing to get his first double of the match, but he would leave the 4-7-9. That would be enough to send Marina to her first ABTA title. Finishing with a 156/211 to 181/201. She bowled the popular Reduced Entry to take home $500 for 1st place. Vuong received $500 for 2nd

place. Champion Marina Suos

is from Signal Hill and used a RotoGrip rising Star. She would like to say thank you to Emmerson Wafer and Mike Wahl. Marina loves the ABTA and in the past has won TWO (count em) Match Series Pots! A Lucky Lady? Yes but Most deserving.

Vuong Do (2nd Place) is from Westminster and used a 900 Global / Bank drilled by Ben Mach. He is single but taken by Julie Nguyen and would like to say thank you to the ABTA Staff.

Vic Garcia (3rd Place) is from Baldwin Park and used a Storm NRG drilled at Covina Bowl pro shop and is married to Lily. He would like to say thank you to his ABTA Friends and Staff.

The weekly ball winner of a 900 Global Ball was Derek Lee. He won the OMG. Each time you bowl, you get a free ticket for this prize given away by our Sponsor, 900 Global. In our weekly raffle, the winners for an ABTA entry were Jhun Tan and Bonnie Roberto. Win-ning an ABTA Shirt was Cezar Marcella. Winning a Kohls Gift card was Steve Brode, an ABTA Entry for our Labor Day event was Shaun Suase. The rest of the results are in the payoff colums in this paper.

Our next event will be at

Valley View Lanes on Aug 6th. Squads on Saturday start at 12 pm, with our final squad at 6pm this week. This week is the first of our Handicap Bo-nus events.

BOWL

CondolencesNORWALK—We just lost

a Legend in Bowling. Yukio Hino passed away this morn-ing. He has been secretary treasure for our league since 1958.

Our league started in 1950 at the now demolished Pasade-na Bowling Center as the Aris Ayes Bowling League. 1961 The new Eagle Rock Lanes opened and our league moved there and changed the league name to Pasadena Nisei. 1986 Eagle Rock Lanes closed and we moved to Little Tokyo Bowl until it closed in 1992.

Then we moved to Beverly Lanes and have been there ever since. In 2004 Yukio Hino turned 80 and the league captains all agreed to honor him by changing the league name to the Yuk Hino Bowl-ing League.

This league has been in ex-istence for 61 years thanks to Yukio Hino. He told me a few years ago that he enjoys being the secretary treasurer.

Sincerely Robert Kikkawa

JUNIOR GOLD FEVER IS SPREADING IN SAN MARCOSSAN MARCOS NEW JUNIOR GOLD QUALIFICATION PROGAM

SAN MARCOS — The “Youth Bowlers for Success” Program is starting off it NEW season with its NEW Jr. Gold Qualification Program. AMF Eagle Lanes is excited about this additional opportunity to help young bowlers with high-averages to experience the challenges of Junior Gold competitions.

Youth bowlers progress and succeed by learning all as-pects of their chosen sport and are prepared to continue to bowl competitively through advanced training. Skill development and coaching is the heart of the Junior Gold Program.

Why Junior Gold? Dedicated youth bowlers may par-ticipate for several reasons: to thoroughly learn the nuanc-es of the game; to earn college scholarship; as preparation for bowling at the collegiate level; or to prepare for the ultimate goals of international or professional bowling.

Junior Gold members have the opportunity to win thou-sands of dollars in scholarships and spots on the USBC Junior Team USA by competing at the USBC Junior Gold Championships.

Junior Team USA members compete internationally against youth from around the world, (United States, Can-ada, on U.S. military bases overseas and in U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico) while also having the opportunity to refine their game with assistance from world-renown elite coaches.

AMF Eagle Lanes is proud of its youth bowling pro-gram and their dedicated USBC Certified Coaches. Fall season registration is August 13, 2011 10am to 2pm. MURRIETA — Sean Kucera rolled his first eight hundred series last night (279 - 259 - 279 = 817) in Cal Oaks 430 Scratch Doubles League. Sean was so thrilled he was ready to buy everyone, in the league, a drink. Too bad it was 12:30AM and the bar closed at midnight.

Sean used his “Old Ball” to roll the big score. It was a gift from his best friend, DON MOSER. Yes, Don Moser of PBA fame. Don gave Sean the ball five years ago when they bowled as teammates. Don is a long time BRUNSWICK staffer who felt the ball fit Sean’s style of play.

Sean needed a strike to open the tenth frame of game

three, to get his 800. When a rocking ten pin fell to “seal the deal”, Sean leaped off the ground and yelled: “VIVA LA BOLA”. At least that’s what I thought I heard. I guess he was referring to his “OLD BALL.” On second thought, maybe Sean called out: “VIVA BOWLA”, in reference to the thrills our sport has in store for those who persevere and per-fect their game.

Sean has been taking les-sons from Moser for five years now and how sweet it was to see his hard work pay off.

With the summer season winding down, his super set was big. It allowed his team to take fifteen points (of six-teen) and vault into the play-

off picture. Teammate RYAN CHRISTIANSON had a 717 series to aid the cause.

Every league night at Cal Oak’s is an “EVENT.” This is especially so with the scratch league. The league features team shirts and team banners.

Each teams banner is hung over the lane that team is bowling on. Remember the old PBA banners? The only thing lacking on league night is a parade!

You should come to Cal Oaks some Thursday night to see the dog and pony show.

Sean wishes to thank Don Moser for being a great friend and super coach. He also is grateful to the BOWLING NEWS for recognizing his bowling accomplishments.

(L-R) Champion Randi Diato & Jun AysonRandi would like to thank his Uncle James Smith & James Hall for help with his game. A special thanks to his Auntie.

FAULKNER, JIMENEZ TAKE JUNIOR GOLD TITLES

Gary Faulkner and Natalie Jimenez

HENDERSON — Gary Faulkner of Memphis, Tenn., and Natalie Jimenez of Row-land Heights, Calif., won na-tional titles Friday, claiming the top spots at the 2011 Unit-ed States Bowling Congress Junior Gold Championships presented by Brunswick.

Both players rolled to their respective victories at Sunset Station’s Strike Zone with little drama down the stretch. They came out on top against 1,648 USBC Youth bowlers who started the week. Faulkner fin-ished with a 46-game total of 10,241, including a 9-7 record in match play with 20 bonus pins for wins. Andrew Koff of Miami took second with 10,016 and a 12-4 record. “It feels good to win it like this,” said the 20-year-old Faulkner, who attends Webber Interna-tional. “Even though I was pretty far ahead, I just wanted

to keep pushing and make my spares. You never know when someone is going to sneak up behind you.”

On the girls side, Jimenez had a 46-game score of 9,819, including a 11-4-1 record, to

top second-place finisher Elise Bolton of Merritt Island, Fla., who finished with a 9-7 record and 9,651 pins. “This is a huge experience and it hasn’t sunk in yet,” said the 19-yearold

Jimenez, who bowls col-

legiately for Central Missouri. “Being ahead by a lot is good and bad. It’s good because I don’t have to shoot so high and bad because if I bowl bad, they are going to catch me.”

The top four boys and top four girls in the final standings earned automatic spots on Ju-nior Team USA 2012.

Joining Faulkner and Koff on the boys side was third-place finisher Zack Hattori of Las Vegas, and fourth-place finisher and Greene of Rom-ney, W.Va., and fourth-place finisher Jessica Earnest of Vandalia, Ill.. defending cham-pion Marshall Kent of Yakima, Wash.

On the girls side, joining Jimenez and Bolton on Junior Team USA was third-place finisher Amanda Greene of Romney, W.Va., and fourth-place finisher Jessica Earnest of Vandalia, Ill..

12 Survivors Headed to Grand Central Station for Teen Masters Finals

MAPLE SHADE, N.J. – Twelve teenage bowlers, including defending High School Boys champion Zack Hattori of Las Ve-gas, earned trips to the final rounds of the 14th annual Teen Mas-ters bowling championships presented by Ebonite International Tuesday at Laurel Lanes.

Four boys and four girls in the High School Divisions, along with two boys and two girls in the Under 14 Divisions, will com-pete in “best-of-two-game” elimination matches on specially-constructed lanes in Vanderbilt Hall inside New York City’s Grand Central Station starting Wednesday.

At stake for the Teen Masters grand championship winner is a four-year “full ride” scholarship package worth $64,000. Xtra Frame, pba.com’s online video streaming service, will provide live coverage of all elimination matches from Grand Central Sta-tion Wednesday and Thursday.

In the High School Boys Division, A.J. Johnson of Oswego, Ill., and Ryan Ventillo of New City, N.Y., earned automatic berths in the semifinal round after finishing first and second, respectively at the end of 18 games of qualifying. Johnson had 3,773 pins, 133 ahead of Ventillo. Elise Bolton of Merritt Island, Fla., and Gabriella Mayfield of Lake Isabella, Calif., earned the High School Girls semifinal berths with 3,553 and 3,505 to-tals, respectively.

Under 14 qualifying leaders Wesley Low Jr. (3,682 pins) and Ashley Dunn (3,297), both from Palmdale, Calif., earned trips into their respective division’s championship matches.

On Wednesday at Grand Central Station, the four remain-ing High School Division girls will bowl “best-of-two-game” matches at 2 and 3 p.m. Eastern, followed by two High School Division boys’ matches at 4 and 5 p.m. The winners will advance to Thursday’s championship matches.

In the “best-of-two-game” format, one player must win both games to win the match outright. If the players split the two games, the match will be decided in a one-ball sudden-death roll-off.

Thursday’s final round will feature the Under 14 Girls Cham-pionship at noon, Under 14 Boys Championship at 1 p.m., High School Girls Championship at 4 p.m. and High School Boys Championship at 5 p.m. All matches will be best of two games. At 7 p.m., the High School Girls and High School Boys champi-ons will meet in the Grand Championship match for the $64,000 scholarship package. All times are Eastern.

All of the action from Grand Central Station will air live on PBA.com’s Xtra Frame, the Professional Bowlers Association’s exclusive subscription-based online video streaming service. To enroll as an Xtra Frame subscriber, visit pba.com and click on the Xtra Frame logo. A two-week trial subscription is available for $5.

GUT-0MEN GOT-R-DUN IN ROCKY MARSH TRIOS

by Joy McGregorANAHEIM—Don Gut-Omen was one of the few to mas-

ter Friday’s lane condition! Most of us were out to lunch and missed the Playbook detailing the “Game Plan”. Don set-tled right in and obviously had NO problems as evidenced by his games of 240-218 and 257 for 715 and added a 190 game to acheive a league-leading series at 905. Don was the lone bowler to score a 900, the rest of us fielded very generic scores so, kudos to you, Don!
