Dear Parishioners, Happy Festival Week! We must pray hard for good weather this week. We will be continuing set-up the next few days and the Festival officially opens on Thursday evening. I look forward to our volunteer and community appreciation dinner on Wednesday even-ing. If you volunteer at anything in the parish during the year, you are invited to the Wednesday, Pre-Festival dinner. Please RSVP as soon as possible. In order to make the festival happen we need over 400 disci-ples. As I mentioned in an earlier blog, I am purposely using the term “disciples.” Recently I heard a talk by Bishop Perez that said Jesus did not call volunteers, he called disciples to serve the mission of the Church. The parish festival is a mission of the parish. It provides the funds to help us support Catholic education. It brings people together for fun and relaxation in a healthy environment. It brings guests to our parish to share in our hospitality. It allows us to show how diverse and welcoming our Catholic community is in its mission. So, I really implore you to consider becoming a festival disciple, even if just for a few hours. There are a lot of opportunities: set-up, clean-up, food preparation and serving, children’s games, adult games of chance, parking lot patrol, and more. People of all ages can volunteer! If you know people who need volunteer hours for their school this counts as well. Please go to our website, stop by the volunteer desk in church after Masses, or fill out a form and return it to the parish office. All are very easy ways to volunteer. I promise you a great time! Another great way to help is by donating an item for the raffles. Elsewhere in the bulletin is a sug-gested list of items. Gift cards are also very good! Every donation is a tax deduction for you. One of the highlights of our parish festival is the Grand Raffle. You have a chance to win lots of money. The donation for your chance to win is just $5/ticket or $20/5 tickets. Eve-ry year someone local has won. Who couldn’t use $10,000? And all the proceeds go direct-ly to support Catholic Education. Even though we accept EdChoice vouchers, over 100 of our families have children who are not eligible for those and have to pay us directly. We try to offer as much financial aid as possible. Plan on attending the festival, as it is a great way to meet old friends and make new ones. It is a good old-fashioned fun time! There are great bands, DELICIOUS food, good beer, exciting raffles, and lots of games for children and adults. 11:00 am Mass on Sunday will be outside under the big tent. Please note that on Sunday, August 11 there will be NO 6:00 pm Mass. I am very excited to share that on August 15 we will be having a Eucharistic/Marian Pro-cession like we did last year. At 5 pm we will start a procession with the Eucharist and Mary statue and process up to St. John of the Cross. We will pray along the way. Lolley the Trol-ley will follow us, and if you get tired you can get on/off the Trolley at the various intersec-tions. We will arrive at SJC by 6 or 6:15 pm and have Mass in the Shrine for the Feast of the Assumption. The Knights of Columbus from both parishes will then host a picnic. It will be a great opportunity for both parishes to celebrate this new endeavor. Please RSVP to the parish office for the picnic portion. Guardian Angels Early Learning Center will be ready to open soon. This is the newest ministry of the parish and school. It will offer childcare and learning for infants 6-weeks old through PreK aged. It will be open year round, from 7 am to 6 pm. It will be located in the Merici Center (former convent) on the north end of the property. If you know anyone look-ing for childcare, please call Molly to inquire about registration. It is a solid Christian Catho-lic program. Our teachers all hold their Bachelors degree and are highly trained. Make it a great week! See you in Church. Peace, Fr. John

FULFILLED: Uncovering the Biblical Foundations of Catholicism (Part Two) Uncover the biblical roots of Catholicism and of God’s con-sistent design for our worship of Him and His relationship with us. Learn where the blueprint for our Catholic Faith was laid in the Old Testament and how Jesus fulfilled it in the New Testa-ment. Part One covered the elements of the outer sanctuary of the Tabernacle. Part Two will explain elements of the inner sanctuary and how they connect to the Magisterium, the Eucha-rist, incense, Mary, and more. NOTE: It isn’t necessary to have participated in Part One before taking Part Two, but you will need the book which covers both parts. The cost is $13. Please indicate you need the book when you register. Part Two is a seven-week course which will be held from 6:30-8 PM on Wednesdays from September 4 through Octo-ber 16. There is no charge for this program. Contact Linda Shenk at 216-261-9201 or [email protected] no later than Monday, August 26, to register.

LUKE BROWN’S REFLECTION Discernment of Spirits (Part 1 of 3)

In this three-part series on prayer and mental health, I want to introduce two things to you: discernment of spirits as taught by St. Ignatius and Satan as the great accuser. St. Ignatius taught that there are three spirits at work in our lives. The idea is that we can tell which spirit is at work by the fruit of our interior movements. The first is the spirit of God. If we are moved to love others more fully, pray with greater diligence, or direct all things towards God, we can rightly say that these desires have been inspired by the Holy Spirit and will bring us greater peace and joy. Compare this to the spirit of the evil one, the second spirit, that directs us towards evil things such as selfishness, lust, and greed. When we pursue the ideas brought upon by the evil one, we are left feeling empty, restless, hopeless, and in great turmoil. The third spirit is within us and arises from our own power of mind and affection. The spirit of self could be de-scribed as the voice inside our head or the part of us that reasons and feels. The spirit of self is often the most difficult to discern because it can be confusing to tell if what we are hearing is our inner spirit versus the spirits of the evil one or God. If you haven’t already, I highly recommend reading about the work of St. Ignatius. Some of the most helpful resources I have found are at www.ignatianspirituality.com. Next week, we will fur-ther discuss discernment of spirits and how it can greatly influ-ence our mental health.

If you or someone you know is considering Becoming a Catholic, this is your invitation to

the R. C. I. A. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to

them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Teacher, where are you staying?” He said to them,

“Come, and you will see.” John 1:38-39

Do any of these statements describe you or someone you know? I need much more information about Catholicism before I would consider joining. I am considering joining, but I am still unsure about it. I am fairly sure I would like to join, but still need some time to study and pray about it. I am fairly sure that I want to join the Catholic Church. If so, call 216-731-1515 to speak to someone on our pastoral staff about the initiation process of the Catholic faith

and a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ.

R.C.I.A. sessions begin September 15th Ss. Robert and William Parish invites you to come and see!
