Our August meeting will include a special demonstration of the K9 Toss and Fetch! Our

fellow club member Amy Sjomeling is the club caption of the league. She will be show-

ing off her team’s skills and we will have a special guest! There will be an Updog Chal-

lenge judge in attendance to talk about the venue of dog disc and answer questions.

Thank you, Amy, for organizing this!

Mark your calendars for our Annual Potluck at Camp Bandy. We ask that everyone bring a

dish to pass and Camp Bandy is providing the protein. This is a wonderful time for socializ-

ing with other club members followed by a regular meeting.

Potluck starts at 6PM at Camp Bandy

Miss Josephine Marcus RN THDA CGC TKP is a certified therapy dog with the Alliance of Therapy Dogs (ATD). On the weekend of July 26–29, Josie and I went on a road trip to Buffalo, NY, where my friend Marg (who lives in Canada) is undergoing cancer treatment (and is doing very well).* She is a crazy dog lady too and is missing her own dogs something terrible. We spent most of a day hanging out: visiting, walking, eating, talking, and of course petting Josie, watching her snooze, showing off her tricks, and so on. The next morning Marg reported that her blood pressure was the lowest it has been since her diagnosis. Therapy dogs aren't just pretty faces ... They make a real difference. * I had offered to provide an official therapy dog visit for other patients and their families at the facili-ty where Marg is staying, but they don't accept ATD. But both the facility and her doctor gave approv-al for us to visit privately as just friends. Josie did not wear any therapy ID (though I did put her in her working harness just as a reminder). It was actually kind of nice because we did not have to adhere to ATD rules: she could be off-leash in the private fenced garden (no one else was there), Marg and her husband could give her treats, etc. She was a very good girl, of course. (Marg has given me permission to share pictures and stories about our visit.) - Amy Schneider

Our daughter and son-in-law, Jenna and Sam

Hansen, got a bi-blue Sheltie puppy from Vicki

Weis in June. His name is Saber. He’s very

cute and seems super smart. At eight weeks

old, he was already doing sit, down, etc. His

repertoire of things he can do just keeps grow-

ing now that he is three months old. We got to

puppy sit over the July 4th weekend, which was

really fun.

The newest addition to our household.

Afortunado Mackintosh, I’m Stuck on You, “Tosh”. She has fit in so well and keeps us all on our toes. And, yep, I have gone to the brown side!

Meet Chip!!

By Dana Nelson

I’d like to introduce Temora All In “Chip”! This sweet Australian Terrier

joined our pack on June 30th. So far life with this terrier has been going well.

He has adapted to life with big dogs and just enjoys life!! We look forward

to meeting lots of people and going on lots of adventures while doing things

like conformation, obedience and rally – and whatever other fun things

come along!

Thanks everyone for your kind words, genuine congratulations and fun an-

ticipation in meeting him!

JUST A DOG

From time to time, people tell me, “lighten up, it’s just a dog,”

or “that’s a lot of money for just a dog.”

They don’t understand the distance travelled, the time spent,

or the costs involved for “just a dog.”

Some of my proudest moments have come about with “just a dog.”

Many hours have passed and my only company was “just a dog,”

but I did not once feel slighted.

Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by

“just a dog,” and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch

of “just a dog” gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day.

If you, too, think it’s “just a dog,” then you probably understand

phrases like “just a friend,” “just a sunrise,” or “just a promise.”

“Just a dog” brings into my life the very essence of friendship,

trust, and pure unbridled joy.

“Just a dog” brings out the compassion and patience

that make me a better person.

Because of “just a dog” I will rise early, take long walks and look

longingly to the future.

So for me and folks like me, it’s not “just a dog”

but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future,

the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment.

“Just a dog” brings out what’s good in me and diverts my thoughts

away from myself and the worries of the day.

I hope that someday they can understand that its’ not “just a dog”

but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being

“just a man” or “just a woman.”

So the next time you hear the phrase “just a dog,”

just smile, because they “just don’t understand.”

Our 2-year-old Shetland Sheepdog, Weis Make the Case Two’s Better, CDX, CGCA (Casey), and I showed in Utility A obedience at the Marshfield Kennel Club Show on July 20 and 21. Saturday’s show was “interesting,” to say the least. That was the day of the torren-tial rains, thunderstorms, wind, etc. When Casey was in the ring, all the phones went off in the building with weather warnings. Casey almost qualified anyway. He made it to the 2nd half of the last exercise when he NQd. Sun-day was better. He got his first UD leg with a first place and a score of 196½. His Mom was very proud. Now we just need some shows to go to in order to get the other two legs! Hope to start showing him in Agility soon, too, as he has been taking some classes (thanks Clay) and really loves it. (He is better at it than I am.) Cindy Dahlke

Ariell’s A Hint of Mint (Petey) passed the following classes at the Central Wisconsin Scent Work Trials:

Luka has been a busy boy this spring and sum-mer. In April he earned his Novice Container and Interior titles at the Scent Work Club of Central Wi trial. In June he attended a herding seminar in Iowa and met sheep for the first time. In July,

he earned his first Beginner Novice Obedience leg at the Marshfield Kennel Club trial AND he

earned his Open JWW title at the ABMC Trial at Camp Bandy. Proud of this boy!

Jaylah & I had lots of fun doing Scent

Work at the Scent Work Club of Central WI trial July 27-28, 2019!

Jaylah Qualified in 10 of her 14 runs, earned 7 placements & 3 new titles:

SCA- Scent Work Container Advanced SHDN- Handler Discrimination Novice

SIE- Scent Work Interior Excellent

I was thrilled that she placed 1st in a cou-ple of her Excellent runs as this was her

debut in the Excellent class! Jaylah loves Scent puzzles & is a rockstar solv-

ing them!

Ivy had a busy and largely successful couple of weeks. Last week, in the

midst of the thunderstorms and wind, she earned her

AKC Farm Dog Certification. The following day she competed in

Open obedience for the first time at Marshfield Kennel Club's Obedience trial. Although she NQ'd in heeling, once she had time to settle down a bit, she did a beautiful job on the 5 remaining exercises, losing only 3

points combined. This past weekend we competed in the Scent Work Club of Central Wis-

consin's scent work trial earning 4 new titles (Advanced buried, containers,

interior; and Novice Handler Discrimi-nation) with 2 1st placements, 1 2nd,

3rd and 4th. I can't say enough about how much the dogs love scent work. It certainly has done wonders for Ivy's confidence lev-el! So proud of my little girl and how

far she's come!

Our first AKC Scentwork trial and Ketch was great! A new title in Novice Container and

two legs in Novice Interior with 2nd and 4th place. Such a fun event. Thank you to the

Scent Work Clib of Central Wisconsin for a well run trial.

-Shelley Plucker

Maura had a great time at our first AKC Scentwork trial in Amherst at the end of July. She

Q’ed 5 out of 8 entries and now boasts a brand new title! She got her Novice Containers title, 2

legs towards her Novice Interior and two 3rd placements. Well done, Supergirl!
