Butterfly blown away!

A spectacular precious metal

coin, underpinned by an exquisite

hologram design, the 2010 1000Fr Butterflies of Love Silver BU was blown away when released earlier this year. A dazzling work of

numismatic art, the mintage of 2,500 sold out at super speed – but not before we secured an allocation on behalf of our clients! Crafted to Brilliant Uncirculated quality from 25g of sterling silver, this official legal tender issue of Cameroon honours those butterflies that, lacking one solid pigment, are defined by a dramatic array of dynamic colours – created when white light hits butterfly wings

at a certain angle. Capturing the iridescent brilliance of these wondrous creatures, the spectacular full-colour hologramatic design found upon the 38.61mm flan makes for a truly enchanting collector coin. Complete with a Certificate of Authenticity, we have just a few of these eye-catching, state-of-the-art legal tender coins in stock.

The Battle of the Ironclads!

Marking a major landmark in naval warfare history – the

first battle between

ironclad warships – the

Perth Mint’s latest Famous Naval Battles coin has just been unveiled!

An official legal tender issue, this 40.60mm .999 silver Proof honours the Battle of Hampton Roads, during the 1861-65 American Civil War. Distinguished by the spectacular use of full-colour, contrasting brilliantly against the gleaming silver surface, this exclusive type recalls the encounter between the Confederate ironclad ram, Virginia, and the North’s ironclad Union Monitor in 1862. Fighting for several hours, neither ship could land a decisive blow, and with their armour plating proving

extremely effective, the course of naval warfare had been changed forever. With the first of the series, honouring the Battle of Salamis, sold out at the Mint, and the Trafalgar tribute sailing to similar sell-out success, the battle to secure this memorable military commemorative is sure to be fierce.

An outstanding tribute to one of the most famous conflicts in global military history, the Battle of Trafalgar, we still have this 40.60mm .999 fine silver Proof available at the Perth Mint Official Issue Price!

NO HOLLOW GESTUREThe ultimate recognition for a truly inspirational Australian, the Australian Government’s decision to enshrine Fred Hollows upon an Australian legal tender coin is highly commendable – and entirely appropriate. A name that inspired, and continues to inspire, hope, gratitude and respect in equal parts, leading ophthalmologist Fred Hollows’ pioneering work gave

the gift of sight to thousands of people around the world. Providing assistance to the neglected and underprivileged elements of society, his work lives on through the Fred Hollows Foundation, with his impact felt in many countries across the globe. More than just a fine tribute to this groundbreaking medico, this unique Al-Br BU $1 is crucial to traditional collectors. Not issued

A deeply moving, official military tribute, featuring a crucial ‘not-to-be-issued-for-circulation’ type, this unique PNC honours the Aussies lost in battle at Fromelles in France in WWI – described as ‘the worst 24 hours in Australia’s entire history’.

On the 19th and 20th of July,

1916, the AIF 5th Division suffered 5,533 casualties at Fromelles, with many diggers remaining unaccounted for. Following the discovery of a mass grave in 2008, 250 Allied soldiers have been laid to rest

with full military honours in a new War Cemetery with the last interred in late July 2010.

Depicting the Cobbers Statue that stands in honour of the dead in Fromelles, this beautifully designed PNC incorporates a 60c stamp, as well as the RAM’s unique 2010 Fromelles 20c Unc – a type that is not to be issued for circulation.

Hottest 100! The COMPLETE 100-Coin 1985-98 Maklouf Portrait

Among the briefest Australian coin types, the 1985-91 1c & 2c Maklouf Portrait Series represents the grand finale of circulating copper coinage in Australia. From the time of the 1797 Cartwheel Penny – the trigger for the Proclamation of 1800 – copper coinage has played a very prominent role in

Australian numismatics. Copper coins circulated in Australia for nearly 200 years until, overwhelmed by inflation, Australia’s smallest decimal denominations were axed from circulation in the 1990s. Short-lived, Australia’s last 1c and 2c types were struck from 1985 to 1991, with both bearing the second decimal portrait of

Elizabeth II, created by Raphael Maklouf. A comprehensive appreciation, this collection comprises all seven 1c and seven 2c dates issued from 1985 to 1991. Highlighted by the first Maklouf portrait issue of each denomination, the set also comprises SIX dates not issued for circulation! Found only in RAM sets, the 1986

& 1991 1c, and 1986, 1987, 1990 & 1991 2c coins are all key, low-mintage types – hotly pursued by those aiming to compile a complete collection. An outstanding opportunity to secure a key piece of Australian numismatic history, comprising coins valued at up to A$65 apiece, the 14-coin 1985-91 1c & 2c Maklouf

Portrait Collection is underpinned by sensational value-for-money and Unc quality.

The last days of copper…

An extremely scarce series in UncWhilst headlined by an array of highly desirable ‘not-issued-for-circulation’ low-mintage types, this collection is just as crucial for the presence of every standard design 5c and 10c date issued from 1985 until 1998. Why? Because, as with every coin offered on these pages, the 5c and 10c coins

issued during the Maklouf Portrait era are defined by, on average, the lowest mintages of the Australian decimal period. Struck in significantly fewer numbers than the 1966-84 Machin Portrait Series that preceded it, and the Rank-Broadley Portrait Series that followed, the scarcity of 5c and

10c Maklouf Portrait dates is also due to the fact that people tend to overlook standard, non-commemorative coins. With the 5c and 10c both featuring the standard design for the denomination, few of these dates were set aside at the time of issue, and are naturally tough-to-find in Uncirculated quality – as here.

Featuring all fourteen 5c and all fourteen 10c dates struck from 1985 to the last Maklouf Portrait issue in 1998, this collection will also be highly sought after for the dates that cannot be found in change. With the first Maklouf Portrait 1985 5c & 1986 5c, and the 1986, 1987, 1995 & 1996 10c dates not

issued for circulation, and found only in RAM Mint Sets, this is your big chance to fill those gaps in your collection.

w w w . d o w n i e s . c o m Australia Toll free 1300 788 3589

Combining a diversity of commemoratives with a huge number of not-issued-for-circulation types, the 20c & 50c denominations are the most popular of the decimal series – with the coins of the 1985-98 Maklouf Portrait period especially sought after.

The Maklouf Portrait period saw an increasing number of commemoratives issued by the RAM, with SIX one-year-only 20c & 50c types struck from 1985 to 1998 – the 1988 Bicentenary 50c, 1991 Decimal Anniversary 50c, 1994 Year of the Family 50c, 1995 Weary Dunlop 50c, 1998 Bass & Flinders and 1995 United Nations

20c. Hoarded away en masse, like all commemoratives, these coins are seldom seen in change in any grade – let alone in Unc. More importantly, the 1985-98 Maklouf Portrait 20c & 50c series are notorious for the massive number of dates not issued for circulation. Of the 14-coin 50c issue,

the 1986, 1987, 1989, 1990 and 1992 dates will never be found in change! Likewise not issued for circulation, an incredible NINE of the fifteen 1985-98 20c dates are found only in RAM Sets – 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993 and 1995!Utterly complete, with all of the key dates and commemoratives

included, this stunning collection is defined by Uncirculated quality. As with the other Maklouf Portrait Sets, just a few coins may be in lightly toned condition.

So many highlights!Not-issued-for-circulation types; scarce circulation issues; a broad array of one-year-only commemoratives – there are so many highlights in the 1985-98 $1 & $2 Maklouf Portrait Series, it’s tough to know where to start! Comprehensive, the collection before you comprises all eighteen $1 and all eleven $2 dates issued from 1985

to 1998. All Maklouf Roos $1 coins are scarce in Unc, as here, but none more so than the 1987, 1989, 1990, 1991 dates – only ever issued in RAM sets! As for the commemoratives, of the ten struck during this period, FIVE were similarly not issued for circulation and will never be found in change – the 1992 Olympics $1 (valued at A$85), the 1994 Decade

$1, 1995 Waltzing Matilda $1, 1997 Smithy Small Portrait and 1998 Florey $1. As few $2 dates were set aside at the time of issue, with people tending to neglect non-commemoratives, the early $2 dates are also all tough-to-find in Unc – with the 1991 $2 not struck for circulation! Under these circumstances, it goes without saying that the

1985-98 $1 & $2 Maklouf Portrait Series is crucial to anyone seeking to assemble a complete decimal collection – making this rare opportunity to secure every coin in Unc utterly irresistible!

A rare, distinctive pair…

Rare and distinctive, all Solid Serial Number notes are prized collector items. Of all Solid Serial notes, however, it is high denomination examples that are the most hotly pursued. Issued in 2006, during the last year of the

Macfarlane/Henry signature combination, we have a small stock of $50 Solid Serial Number Notes – each bearing the ‘lucky’ 777777 serials. Extremely scarce under any circumstances, with only one Solid Serial Number note in

Very rare, this very special 2006 $5 Macfarlane/Henry Consecutive Pair comprises a ‘900000’ serial number note united with its ‘899999’ serial numbered successor!Sought after individually, such semi Solid Serial Number Notes are hot property when found as a Consecutive Pair – largely due to the extreme rarity. With 00000/99999 pairs only appearing every 100,000 notes, this combination is obviously

excessively rare. This rarity is exacerbated by the number of notes that would have been issued for use and well circulated.Beyond this, however, the actual printing process is key to the rarity of this very specific configuration. As notes are printed from the highest number down, notes with serial numbers ending in 00000/99999 are printed at the start of a print-run. As the highest rate of spoilage is experienced at this point, 00000/99999 pairs

are the most likely to be damaged and not issued, increasing the rarity of the combination. We have just a few 2006 $5 Macfarlane/Henry 900000/899999 pairs in stock – taken from original bundles and therefore in strictly Unc.

From the earliest print-run!

Lucky Solid 7s!

An outstanding opportunity, we recently secured a complete NPA bundle of 2006 $5 Macfarlane/Henry banknotes – from the first sheets off the printing press! Carrying the First Year Prefix of the final Macfarlane/Henry annual $5 issue, BA06, these notes are also distinguished as from the earliest part of the 2006 print run by virtue of their high serial numbers. Bearing

serials from 999989 to 999900 – and therefore desirable as Semi Solid Serial Notes – such high numbered notes are scarce. This scarcity is a result of the production process, with a lot of notes from early in a print run rejected due to problems with the ink in the printing of the serial numbers. Thus, many notes with serials as high as those found in this

bundle are deemed unacceptable, and never make it into circulation – greatly increasing the odds against finding such notes in change. In strictly Uncirculated condition, we have these scarce high numbered, Semi Solid notes both individually and as rare Consecutive Pairs.

every 100,000 notes printed, Solid Serial high denomination notes are excessively rare. With fewer high denomination notes printed, and people rarely able to casually pop such a high face value issue away as a collectable, the odds

against finding a $50 Solid Serial note are astronomical. Naturally enough, a $50 Solid Serial Note is seldom seen on the market in strictly Uncirculated condition. Taken from original bundles and therefore in pristine condition, do

not miss this irresistible opportunity. Just a few notes in stock!

Varieties – demand on the riseA highly distinctive part of coin collecting in this country, the field of Varieties is one of the most fascinating and important elements of Australian numismatics. Errors, Overdates, mintmarks, master die changes…collector fascination with ‘something different’

has made predecimal and decimal coin Varieties a very popular sphere. This fascination with diversity is deepened by the quality of Australian coin production. Renowned for uniformity, any coin demonstrating even the most minuscule variation from the standard design instantly becomes

a collector item. The importance of the field is illustrated by a glance at Australia’s greatest rarities. With coins such as the 1930 Penny London Obverse (known by 2 examples) and 1922/21 Overdate Threepence (less than 1,000 in existence)

amongst the nation’s highest profile rarities, the contribution of Varieties to Australian numismatics is obvious. A must-have for any Varieties collector, we also have the new 2nd edition of Australian Predecimal Coin Varieties available for just A$29.95/US$26!

Most affordable, this is a great opportunity to keep your ‘Golden Dollar’ series complete.

THREE SETS IN ONE!

A new chapter in the State Quarters Series, the 2010 Proof Set features the first five coins of the ‘America the Beautiful’ Quarters Series! To be issued over 12 years, the 56 coins in this series will each feature

a unique design of a US national park or national site of interest, with one coin for each US State and Territory. The one-year-only 5-coin 2010 set honours Hot Springs National Park (Arkansas), Yellowstone National Park (Wyoming), Yosemite National Park (California), Grand Canyon National Park (Arizona)
