We hope you and your close friends and family had a relaxing and fun summer. We have been busy preparing for another amazing year at Reno High School. The following monthly newsletter will serve as our one stop shop for need to know information about our school. I encourage you to make sure we have your accurate email information so we can send it to you electronically each month. We also post the newsletter and calendar on our website at www.rhshuskies.com under the Principal Newsletter and Calendar icon. This year we are taking on new challenges like never before while we pursue graduating each and every one of our students with the essential skills and knowledge to be successful in the next chapter of their lives. We are implementing an entire new social and emotional curriculum in our Freshmen Seminar classes which will also include more time to study and organization. Sophomore Success will also implement some of the social and emotional curriculum that focuses on students having a growth mindset vs. a fixed mindset. We want all our students to believe they can be successful and hopefully these classes can help! Our teachers will be taking on Student Learning Objective Training for the entire first semester. SLO’s will be implemented district-wide next year. The idea behind the training to is to support teachers in collaboration around student learning by aligning what they teach to common assessments in order to analyze the results. Our administrative team along with our department leaders will also be doing a book study this year on the book On Common Ground, which discusses the topic of Professional Learning Communities. We will be busy but I am excited about the new learning taking place in the building by our students and our faculty! Nice article on Mallory McGwire http://espn.go.com/espnw/news-commentary/article/13305460/oregon-hits-home-run-elite-recruit-mallory-mcgwire Andrew Berreyesa was recognized as an Academic All-American with the NHSCA (National High School Coaches Association). He also placed 2nd in their Nationals this past April for Sophomores and became an All-American, and he just placed 2nd in USA Wrestling's Junior Nationals in Greco-Roman in Fargo, North Dakota this Summer which also gave him All-American status. http://www.nhsca.com/news/news.asp?id=229682 Tyler Arden was awarded the Al Neuharth Free Spirit scholarship and as a result got to spend a week in Washington DC participating in a conference at the Newseum. Fifty-one students, representing each of the 50 states and Washington, D.C., travel to the nations capital for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet and be inspired by journalists from top papers, networks and websites, as well as leaders from all three branches of government and the Newseum.Conference attendees become part of a tight-knit alumni community and make strong connections with their fellow Free Spirits. It has been a bitter sweet summer.Mr. Matt Mackay, our Red House Project Director, was hired as a district Career and Tech administrator and Tomas Macaluso, our Graphic Design guru, was hired as a dean at Spanish Springs HS.Both gentlemen helped build the Red House Project. They are coaches, class advisors, club advisors, IT support staff, grant writers, teachers, innovators and much, much morethey are our friends. They are so talented they were recruited and promoted. We thank both of them for making Reno High School and The Red House Project a success and we hope our paths cross again in the future.Good luck Matt and Macwe will miss you and we are proud of you. The good news for our students is we were able to hire two amazing new Red House staff members.Craig Musni comes to us from the WCSD Communications Department and has experience in graphic design, video production and will be able to teach the upper level Red House classes in 3D Design.Brian Bolton will bring his artistic talents from Virginia City High School to the Red House this year.At Virginia City he taught everything! (Yearbook, social studies, art, leadership, graphic design...you name it.)His talents and enthusiasm will plug in nicely in the Red House as he assumes many roles for our school. We are very excited for the future of The Red House Project! Huskie Reminders from Mr. Hackbusch: Reno High is dedicated to our tradition of Respect, Honor and Strength. Please read our gentle reminders and expectations. Be in dress code, please.Last thing we want to deal with is dress code.If you are sent down to the office for dress code it will not be up for debate and we will go through our progressive discipline plan which includes changing clothes or covering up!Ohand we call your parents also. Be on time.Successful people come earlymake it your habit Huskies! Be a leader. If you see someone being bullied or harassed, say something.Dont be a bystander be a leader. Get your absences excused ASAP.The more class you attend, the more you will learn! Be involved!Get involved in a sport, club or school organization. It will make you more well- rounded, you will meet new people and you will have opportunities to give back to your community. Have a plan for your success by being organized, turning work in, studying, monitoring Infinite Campus and going in to see your teachers for extra help. Keep our campus clean! If you see trash, pick it up and throw it away.If we all contribute, our campus stays beautiful. Be kind, calm and humble.Huskies take care of each other.Life is too short, lets be kind to everyone.Stay calm and if you get upset go see an adult you trust about it.Stay humble.Sometimes at games we want to yell at the other teams and their fans because competition can be emotional.Act like youve been there.Be a class act at all times in all venues. Believe in yourself! This is a critical one for me.If you put in the effort, great things will happen. They may not happen right away, but trust me, keep grinding and you will reach your goals and beyond! BE HUMBLE, HUNGRY AND ALWAYS THE HARDEST WORKER IN THE ROOM

The Journey Ahead I compare the school year to climbing a steep mountain. It will be difficult, there will be times we doubt ourselves and there will be slips and falls along the way.The last 5 years we have maintained a graduation rate of 87% (3 years in a row), then 88% and we hope for a little bump this year.We keep climbing amidst new standards, curriculum, initiatives and assessments.I want to thank our teachers for their tireless dedication to our students. They have helped students sustain a level of achievement rarely seen in schools todayyear after year.It means something to receive a diploma from Reno High School. It is not easy! We will make mistakes and we will have disagreements and misunderstanding but please knowwe are in this together and we will keep climbing to support EVERY student toward their individual success.Communicate with us, monitor your progress and ask questions in you are confused.WE ARE HERE TO HELP YOU. With that, I am extremely excited for the school year. Our expectations are high but our families, staff and students would have it no other way!
