Greetings from Susan Smoller

Shalom Fellow Congregants,

Thank you very much for the honor of installing me as President of Torat Yisrael, at the annual meeting held in June. It is a humbling

experience to be chosen to lead our congregation in this time of change and progress. Being an effective leader involves support and hard work from all of the congregation and I thank you for all you do. I will work hard to continue to promote a vibrant, inclusive and caring congregation.

On November 7 we will hold a yard sale in the temple. We will sell items that you drop off to the temple, Monday through Thursday from 9am to 5pm and Friday from 9am to 2pm. Please do not drop off clothes for the yard sale. If you have clothes to share, please drop them at the Edgewood Food Closet or contact the temple for additional drop-off sites. We are looking for new and gently used items such as household goods, costume jewelry, children’s toys and games with all the pieces intact. We have arranged for a free truck to accept all your electronic and computer items that day at

1

the temple. The truck will be available for you to drop off old faxes, tape recorders, computers, telephones, printers etc… This is all to support the temple objective to improve our carbon footprints. Please contact the temple if you are available to work at setting up the items on Saturday evening, November 6 and if you are available to work at selling the merchandise from 8am–3pm on Sunday, November 7.

I hope you will join us at our annual free break the fast at the temple. We will serve a complete dinner to enable us all to share in the first meal after Yom Kippur and to socialize.

Please bring your families with you and let’s enjoy each other’s company over a meal. As in the past two years, we are looking for financial donations to offset the cost of this event and all donations can be sent to the temple and earmarked towards the break the fast. I hope you are enjoying this wet and warm summer and I look forward to seeing everyone soon.

Please contact me at any time with any comments or questions.

B’Shalom,Susan

Busy

Lives

I was listening today to a children’s song called “BusyBusyBusy” while I was rushing around. These lyrics (sung at feverish tempo) caught my attention:

We have to hurry far awayAnd then we hurry nearAnd we have to hurry everywhereAnd be both there and hereAnd we have to send out messagesBy e-mail, phone, and faxAnd we’re talking every minuteAnd we really can’t relaxAnd we think there is a reasonTo be running neck-and-neckAnd it must be quite importantBut we don’t have time to check.

So I tried to slow down.

But truly, aren’t we busy? There seems to be increased awareness about avoiding “overscheduling” one’s child, which while not always successful, is at least part of general conversation about parenting. But what about adults?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that greater that 50% of married couple households have both adults working. Often adults augment their busy work lives with an adult ed

class, teach in Sunday School, play community softball, belong to a book club, go to PTO meetings, take music lessons—AND take kids to music/dance/gymnastics/sports classes, attend regularly scheduled games for their children, go to shul, mow their lawn, vacuum their home, fold laundry, cook nutritious meals, exercise regularly. This doesn’t account for any needed “downtime” to sit quietly, meditate, read a book. In early May, the National Sleep Foundation released its annual report on “Sleep in America”—they found that about one third of Americans were not getting the amount of sleep they require to function at their best. Lack of sleep leads to irritability, inattention, lesser performance, lowered immunity and ill health.

Can all this be correlated to our busy lives? Not exactly or directly, but it is clear that sustained busyness does not make us happy or satisfied or healthy—and in fact often backfires. Jewish tradition provides a built-in antidote in the observance of Shabbat--though for those less observant, taking time out on Shabbat is difficult because of the busyness (and soccer games, errands, birthday parties…..)

Consider your life, your “busy factor,” your level of stress, your sleep patterns and level of

2

fatigue, your regular downtime. How well are you taking care of yourself?

The Cohen School News Dear Torat Yisrael Families:

I write this note with the hope that your summer is pleasant, restful, and full of fun! Even while we enjoy the lazy, hazy

days of summer, planning and excitement for the new year is on my mind. I am delighted to spend part of my summer at camp with many of our Cohen School students and enjoy a wide variety of sports, water, arts, and Shabbat activities.

I look forward to welcoming all of you when we celebrate Rosh Hashana together on Thursday, September 9 with a family service from 10:00-11:30. Tashlich will take place on Thursday afternoon by the water at Roger Williams Park. On Friday, the Cohen School will provide supervised free play for young children from 10:00-12:30. Please plan your holiday celebration accordingly.

The Bureau of Jewish Education is holding its annual state-wide teacher conference on Sunday, September 12. The opening date for school will be Tuesday, September 14. The September calendar is a busy one, filled with holiday celebrations, school and special events. The calendar is as follows:

- September 9 Rosh Hashana Family Service, Tashlich- September 10 Supervised free play day 2 Rosh Hashana- September 12 Statewide teacher conference- September 14 First Day of School grades 3-7 September 18 Yom Kippur Family Service, Havdalah- September 19 Religious School- September 21 Religious School- September 26 Pizza in the Hut- September 28 Religious School- September 30 Simchat Torah 6:00

With Warmest Regards, Ronni

Librarian’s Corner by Laura Steele, Torat Yisrael LibrarianI hope you are all enjoying a relaxing summer. A new book to our library collection and one which I found interesting is a biography of Benjamin Disraeli, written by Adam Kirsch.

Kirsch reveals the complex, contradictory nature of a man born a Jew and raised in the Christian faith, a man who celebrated his Jewish heritage yet refused to join a campaign in 1840 to save Jews in Damascus from government sponsored torture. Liberal in his political outlook, Disraeli was both distrusted and resented by the conservatives in the House of Commons, but was also indispensable to their cause.

More than fifty biographies have been written about Benjamin Disraeli. Unlike his predecessors, Kirsch focuses his attention, not so much on Disraeli's political career, but on the psychological effects of his Jewish heritage. Kirsch examines how Disraeli and his contemporaries depicted Jews and Judaism in literature, and considers how such representations influenced social behavior and thought during the time of Disraeli's rise to power. Throughout the book, Kirsch provides fascinating details from Jewish history.

Benjamin Disraeli is the tenth book in the Schocken Books/Nextbook "Jewish Encounters" series. An exceptional portrait of an intriguing figure, this book will particularly appeal to those readers interested in studying the history of Jewish thought.

Jewish Seniors Agency Adult Day ServicesWhat is an adult day center and who goes there? At To Life Center Adult Day Services, a program of Jewish Seniors Agency, we answer these questions and a whole lot more.

Adult day services are designed to meet the needs of adults who require supervised care during the day while returning to their homes or the homes of their loved ones in the evening. At the To Life Center, we take into account the needs of seniors as well as the role of the caregiver.

4

Page 5: August-Sept_news

Our programs are designed to enable seniors to partake in social activities that stimulate both their minds and bodies. The value of attending To Life Center Adult Day Service outweighs any misconceived notion about what the program is. Seniors from time to time need more social interaction with their peers while requiring some personal care. The stress that is taken away knowing that an adult day center provides a multitude of services and assistance only enhances a loved one’s mental and physical well being.

The To Life Center offers an individualized plan of care to best serve each person attending. Included activities are: supervision, kosher meals and snacks, group and individual activities, daily exercise, health monitoring, manicures, medication management, spa services, specialized diets, trips, intergenerational programs, therapeutic art activities, pet therapy, podiatry services, transportation, holiday celebrations and a whole lot more.

Potential clients and their families are encouraged to visit the To Life Center for lunch or a tour to see first hand what putting life into living is all about. Call Susan Adler at 621-5374 or email at [email protected].

What makes us so special? Our volunteers are a large part of what makes Torat Yisrael a special temple. We held our annual volunteer Shabbat and honored volunteers who constitute 37% of our congregation. They support our congregation and community by attending minyan, cooking for the less fortunate, working in our temple office, running our website, organizing social events and doing many more mitzvot. The volunteers within our temple who were honored are:
