Tracking Revenue And Income Per Full-Time Equivalent
Balancing staffing levels with expected client work has always been a challenge for firms.
The holy grail is to strike the balance efficiently, in a way that grows revenue per full-time
equivalent (FTE) and ultimately income per FTE. The following graphs show revenue per
FTE and income per FTE over the past five years, broken out by various segments of the IPA
100 – the top third (in total net revenues), the middle third and the bottom third. From this
four trends can be identified:
1-A gap still existsbetween the top third ofthe IPA 100 and thebottom two-thirds whenlooking at these metrics.
2-The top third has beensteadily growingrevenue per FTE. Insome cases thatrepresents true growthdue to increased feesand efficiency, and insome cases mergersbrought in additionalclient revenue butredundant staff were letgo, keeping the FTEcount in check.
3-For the last four years, net revenue per FTE ofthe bottom two-thirdshas been fluctuating andis up only slightly fromlevels seen in 2013.
4-Regardless of progressmade on the revenueside, income per FTEfor all three segments isdown over the last threeyears, with only themiddle third surpassinglevels seen in 2013. IPA
