Rabbi's MessageRabbi Michael [email protected]

Dear Friends,

This set of High Holidays will be different from any we have ever experienced. Rather than greet each other in our synagogue, we will participate from home, watching services on our computer, tablet, or television. The cantor and I will livestream from our sanctuary. No one is totally happy with this solution. But safety is the most important value in Judaism. We all

struggle with the words from untaneh tokef prayer – “who by earthquake and who by plague.”

Here is a small piece of my first day Rosh Hashana sermon:

The Covid-19 pandemic is a totally natural event. It is not there to punish us nor to teach us a lesson. It just is. Like earthquakes, plagues, tsunamis, and every other natural disaster, nature simply happens. Nature is not ma-levolent. Hurricane Katrina did not hit New Orleans because of unethical behavior during Mardi Gras. The 2004 tsunami did not kill hundreds of thousands in Indonesia because these poor people deserved it. The horrible Spanish flu in 1918, which did not come from Spain and which killed far more people than the corona virus, was not a punishment for World War I. And the 1755 Lisbon earthquake which struck on All Saints Day when thousands were killed in church, was not a punishment from God. It was this earthquake that caused many Enlightenment thinkers like Voltaire to rethink their understanding of nature. Nature is not out to punish us. Nature simply is. The corona virus pandemic is a totally natural event. The virus is a living thing, and like every living thing, it wants to “be fruitful and multiply.” How does a virus “be fruitful and multiply?” It takes over the DNA in a host cell. We humans have the host cells that help it multiply. And sadly, sometimes in the act of multiplying, it makes its hosts extremely sick or it even kills its host. So what can we do? Protect ourselves as best we can. Our bodies have a way of fighting off viruses and other invaders. It is called antibodies. Since this is a new virus, we humans did not have the antibodies to fight it. But eventually enough of us will develop the antibodies. At that point, the virus will not go away but it will be far less a threat. It is called herd immunity. How do we develop the antibodies? In the worst case scenario, enough of us will get sick. In the best case scenario, we will develop a vaccine. And when we use human ingenuity to develop a vaccine, we will stop the virus. That is the lesson of the corona virus. It is a call to human ingenuity, to the best creative minds in our scientific and medical communities. That is the lesson in all the destructive forces of nature. How can we build better buildings to protect us from hurricanes and tornados? How can we better predict and warn people of earthquakes and tsunamis? How can we fight cancer cells and birth defects? And how can we develop a vaccine against this virus? The destructive forces of nature are not a punishment, but they are a call to human ingenuity.

Shana Tova, Rabbi Michael Gold

As some of you may already know, I am writing this article at least a month before you read it in the Scroll. I am assuming that when you read this article, COVID-19 will still be present and at some level still a risk for us. The holiday season is usually filled with feelings of happiness, sadness, but most importantly togetherness! How do we cope this year with perhaps not being with our family or friends in person during the holidays? How do we cope this year with this sense of loneliness?

If you are live streaming, our services take some time to embrace solitude. Listen to the prayers and holiday memories and allow it to reconnect you to yourself. Perhaps use it as a form of meditation and reflection on this past year and your hopes for the year to come.

This is an opportunity to get more comfortable with talking to God. Hitbodedut (literally “self-isolation”), a style of prayer that was first popularized by Rebbe Nachman of Breslov, is the act of open, spontaneous, and direct communication with God.

One of the best ways is to keep to a routine and schedule. As I write this article, we are still in the planning stages of the holidays. However, whether they are online or in person, attend our services. Get dressed as you would when you come to Shul for services. If you miss socializing or that Rosh Hashanah meal together, schedule a virtual lunch together or one with social distancing. Remember and appreciate how fortunate we are to have such amazing technology during this pandemic that allows us to at least communicate with each other.

Our needs are never met 100% all the time. The gap between what’s available and what we need can cause us distress. It’s where we need help, and where we can help ourselves. Underneath our emotions are our needs: for safety, for love for the joy and life that comes from belonging. Please join us for the holidays in whichever avenue we decide and know that even if we are not praying in person together, you do belong, and you are still part of this TBTST community.

Join us ...........as we present all our Minyan and Shabbat Services virtually on ZOOM. If

you go to www.zoom.us, you can find a wealth of instructions and vid-

eos on the "how to" of Zoom. For all services, our sign on will remain 817

President's MessageDr. Bruce [email protected]

Friends,

As many of you have probably heard, the decision has been made to live-stream High Holiday services and not have congregants in the building. The High Holiday Task Force made up of myself, temple officers, Rabbi Gold, Cantor Kramarow, and representatives of our Ritual Com-mittee and Board, faced what seemed to be simultaneously the most difficult and the easiest decision regarding services. We had major concerns about the ability to maintain social distanc-ing, the need for the prolonged wearing of masks, and the risks posed by singing both from the

bima and from the congregation. The Rabbi and Cantor had worked hard to come up with possible scenarios in which congregants would be in the sanctuary, including offering two abbreviated services for both days of Rosh Hashanah, Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur. However, after much discussion, and considering the increasing numbers of COVID-19 cases in our community and our country, it became clear that the only prudent course of action was to not gather together in the synagogue for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur this year so as to not place any congregants or staff at risk.

I would like to describe what we anticipate your High Holiday experience to be. TBTST has invested in technology that will allow us to broadcast from our sanctuary. We have installed cameras on the ceiling of the sanctuary that provide a high-quality image and sound which we plan to make available on Zoom and other streaming platforms. This will allow you to enjoy the services remotely, from the safety of your home, using a computer, tablet, smart-phone and TV. The details of exactly how to access services will be forthcoming.

The schedules for the various High Holiday services can be found in the Scroll. The Rabbi and the Cantor will conduct the services from the bima, as usual. There will be approximately ten other people in the sanctuary to provide a minyan including those participating in the service itself (Bal Shacharit, the person chanting the Haf-Torah), Gabbaim to support the Torah service, and two officers who will be on the bima to assist in opening the Arc and removing the Torahs.

In order to minimize contact on the bima and to maintain social distancing, all of the Torah Alyiot will be given to the Torah reader. However, we are offering virtual Alyiot. Before reading each portion of the Torah, we will read aloud the names of congregants being called virtually to the Torah for an Aliyah. For a donation of $108, an individual or couple can receive a virtual Aliyah on the first day of Rosh Hashana or Yom Kippur day. Aliyot on the second day of Rosh Hashanah and during Mincha on Yom Kippur will be available for a donation of $54. It is likely that multiple names will be read for each Aliyah. You can request a virtual Aliyah using the form mailed to you containing information on the Kol Nidre appeal, Book of Remembrance and Fountain of Youth. This form can also be found in this edition of the Scroll.

On Sunday, the 2nd day of Rosh Hashanah, we are planning to blow the Shofar in our parking lot, after services, at 1PM. You would be required to stay in your car and roll down the windows to be able to hear the blasts of the Shofar live and in person. Every other parking spot will be utilized to maintain distance. If the parking lot is full, park along the swale and we will repeat the sounding of the Shofar from the driveway area. However, there will not be a Tashlich service at the synagogue, due to the limited space on the bridge over the canal, making social distancing difficult.

By the time you read this, you likely will have been contacted by one of the members of the High Holiday Task Force to arrange for the purchase of your virtual seats for the holidays. Why, you may ask, do I need to purchase a “seat” when I’m participating in the service from home? The answer is simple.

The purchase of High Holiday seats is, as in years past, a significant portion of the temple’s revenue stream. Your dues payments make up only about 40% of our income. The High Holidays are, therefore, crucial for the financial health of TBTST. Due to the effect of the pandemic, that reality is truer than ever, regardless of whether or not services are in person or virtual. I am counting on all of you, my fellow temple members, to continue to support TBTST by purchasing the same number of virtual seat tickets as you’ve purchased in the past for services in the temple. Why, you may ask, do I need to buy two or more seats, if we are sitting together at home watching the service on a computer or TV? The answer is the same: purchasing those seats supports the financial well-being of TBTST.

We will also be lending the temple’s Mahzorim for use during the services. There is a $36 deposit on each book which will be credited to your temple account when the book is returned. One Mahzor per seat purchased, no exceptions. We plan to distribute the Mahzorim, along with the Book of Remembrance and a Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur program in the parking lot of the temple on the Sunday, September 13th. Details to follow.

Holding High Holiday services virtually was not what anyone wanted, least of all your clergy and lay leadership. As you know, from the beginning of this crisis in March until now, I have always relied on one principal to guide me in making decisions regarding TBTST: that the health and welfare of our congregants and staff is of paramount importance. It was that principal that ultimately influenced the committee in making the decision to go virtual. I sincerely hope that you understand and appreciate that concern and continue, as you always have, to support your Jewish home, Temple Beth Torah Sha’aray Tzedek with your virtual ticket purchases and Kol Nidre appeal donations.

Thank you. Stay safe. Stay healthyL’Shanah Tovah

This High Holiday is probably the most unusual Holidays any of us have experienced. In 2020 we all endured sheltering in place for over four months, some of you even longer. Having Passover without extended family or friends. Many of us where able to Zoom and connect with our loved ones from afar. We attended Minyans and Shabbat services by Zoom and we felt the warmth of connecting with fellow members.

We all hoped that we would be back at the Temple for the High Holiday, now with the resur-gence of the virus in our community, we felt we would be putting lives in danger. With that in

mind, the agonizing decision was made to have virtual services through Live Streaming and Zoom for the coming Holidays. Services will be streamed directly from the sanctuary with Rabbi and Cantor and eight members who will help run the service and make up the minyan needed. We are making every preparation to make this unusual High Holiday meaningful for us all. You will each be asked to purchase a virtual seat which will entitle you to access to both the Live Streaming, Zoom and to borrow a Machzor with a refundable deposit, one for each virtual seat purchased. Virtual services will be shorter this year but with the help of HaShem we will be back in our sanctuary next year. May we all have a safe and Happy New Year.L’Shanah Tovah

Fins Up! By: Zoe Horowitz

As our summer is winding down and we are preparing for this upcoming school year, the TBTST Sharks are getting ready for a year full of fun virtual and (hopefully) in person activities! We kicked off the summer with various Zoom programs for our USY/Kadima and Matchilim/Pre Kadima groups. While this is not how we planned to go back to the year, we are all adjusting and making the best of it.

Personally, the TBTST Youth Group is an amazing de-stressor and fun getaway from school or upsetting prob-lems. I find that each program I go to, even if I am exhausted, I never want to leave by the end. This pandemic has allowed USYers from all over to join together in weekly virtual events, either with just Hanegev or through USY internationally with #USYFi. These weekly Zoom calls are programs set up by USYers with hopes to unite everybody while we are apart.

For more information on upcoming programs and events, if you haven’t already, sign up for our Remind. Text the desired code to 81010.

I hope everyone had a great socially distanced summer and I can’t wait to see you when the year starts back up! So, let’s get back into our year of laughs, fun, and Judaism, with your TBTST Sharks, Fins Up!

Our beautiful building is now nine years old and we anticipate the need for more repairs as our building ages. If you know anyone in any of the trades (A/C, Plumb-ing, Electrical, Painting, Etc.) that you can recommend as a vendor, we would greatly appreciate it. We have found that personal recommendations can lead to substantial savings for the Temple. We need all of you to help us keep costs down while maintaining our beautiful Temple. As the summer comes to an end, the last preparations are being made for the new school year. This year will be different from years before. As we become accustomed to the new way of life, our school made all necessary accommodations to sustain a healthy environment for students, families and staff.

The positive aspect of the pandemic is that it provided us with a “time out” from our busy life. Time to put our lives in perspective. Time to share with our loved ones. Time to bring families together. However, one of the most devastating outcomes of this pandemic is the influence of the social isolation on the social and emotional development of young children. As the weeks

went by, it was evident that our students miss their school, friends and their teachers. It became clear that as much as we tried, the virtual learning didn’t provide a solution to “in person” social interactions with peers and emotional growth. As I observed our students during virtual learning, it became clear that returning to school will be challenging for our students and their families. So how can we help our students make a smooth transition? How can we help them readjust to school routine? How can we teach social awareness in times of social distanc-ing? These are all questions that our educators debate as we are planning to reopen our school. There is no one solution fits all. The social emotional needs of our students differ from one age group to the other. What may be age appropriate for one might not be age appropriate for the other. What works for one child will not necessarily help the other. However, we can all agree that patience, compassion, and love are appropriate for all age groups. Our first day of school is Wednesday, August. 19th. This year, in addition to onsite learning, our school offers a Virtual learning option for the following age groups: 2’s, 3’s and Pre-K. Please call the ECC office for further information @ 954-722-9537.

New school year, new beginning. We are thrilled to welcome back our returning students as well as greet our new students and their families. I am looking forward to once again hearing the laughter of our students and watching their excitement as they share their day with me.

It has been a little over a year since I joined the Temple Beth Torah Sha’aray Tzedek family. Once again, I cannot thank you all enough for welcoming me into this kehillah (community). It’s strange to think how much we’ve been able to share this year. I feel as if I have said and written so much about the school, resources to use for home learning, our hopes for the future of the school, and the possibilities for what’s to come for us as a community.

In an article, I read written by Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, he speaks about the importance of words within Judaism. Judaism, like other religions, has holy places, holy people, sacred times, and consecrated rituals. What made Judaism different, however, is that it is supremely a

religion of holy words. With words G-d created the universe: “And G-d said, Let there be…and there was.” Through words (it was) communicated with humankind. In Judaism, language itself is holy…After creating the universe, G-d’s first gift to the first man was the power to use words to name the animals, and thus to use language to classify. This was the start of the intellectual process that is the distinguishing mark of Homo sapiens. I bring up these quotes because now is a time to truly consider our words…our words for the present and our words for the future! We are living through a unique time…there is no guidebook on how to live within a pandemic! There is no, one-way, to discuss what’s happening in the world with children, teens, our peers, our employers, our society. Words are powerful and thought should be put into the ones used.

Words can be spoken, written, sung, screamed, and acted. However you choose to share your words, I encourage you to do so! Now is the time to share…to ask your families how they feel, how they are handling this new reality, their hopes and dreams for the coming year. As we approach Rosh Hashana, now is the time to reflect on how we are doing as one year comes to an end and how we want to begin anew.

Our children may be young, but they need and deserve an outlet as well…I hope that you will encourage them to express their thoughts and feelings in the way(s) they feel most comfortable…it is amazing to see what can come from the mouths of our youth. We should not only be encouraged to share our words; we should listen as well. We are human and have the need to be heard.

The TBTST Religious School is here for our families. We are working to make Jewish education accessible for all for the 2020-2021 school year. We will be utilizing technology, creative programming, multi-pronged outlets for our students to learn and grow. We are focusing not only on Jewish education, but on being an outlet for our students to express their feelings and frustrations about the current state of the world. Together we will make this unique time a worthwhile educational experience for all our students.

There’s an old Jewish saying in Hebrew, “Adonai notain refuah liefnai shehu notain et hamacah.” In English, “God provides the medicine before he inflicts the disease.”

Who’s to say there was not a plan in place by a higher power to help us through this dark time?

How much worse it might be without our current technology and science. A cure for Covid-19 is being pursued. But, I like to think we already had in place what we needed for spiritual heal-ing and emotional health. Virtual platforms are keeping us physically away from the virus while

keeping us connected! Some even socialize more often than before.

Our weekly Zoom Schmooze sessions, now being hosted by Aleta Wasserman, have brought those who have attended closer than ever before. Via Zoom, Co-chairs Caryn Dubrow and Robyn Laufer launched a successful evening book club. Dr. Sandra Lilienthal held her last two sessions. Stay tuned for news because we are busy planning more activities.

Our Sisterhood Liaisons, with Caryn Dubrow’s guidance, continue to stay in touch by telephone. We sincerely want to know how you are, if you have ideas for activities and if you have had any changes to your contact infor-mation such as a new email address or phone number.

It is exciting that Sisterhood members for the first time ever could attend the Women’s League convention on July 12 if they chose to do so. It was free on because it was virtual – no expenses.

Sisterhood Shabbat weekend is January 15-16. If you are interested, please tell your liaison how you would like to participate.

Welcome Caryn Dubrow, VP Membership, Eileen Edelman, Database Manager and Linda Broido, Handbook Edi-tor to their new Board positions.

I would like to acknowledge in grateful appreciation two very generous donations each made by June Fletcher and Helene Herman respectively!

High Holidays are coming early on the Gregorian calendar this year. At this writing it is unknown exactly how we will observe, but one thing is for sure; it will be different. I have faith that our temple leadership will do what is in the best interest and in loving kindness for us all. L’Shana Tovah in good health to you all!

David Jaspan, Club Administrator

Greetings TBTST Family…A hearty Shalom to everyone! To say that we are seemingly living in a world turned upside down will hardly be a gross ex-aggeration. However, I am hopeful that there is eventually coming a time when this COVID-19 pandemic will be behind us, albeit not forgotten. There is one aspect of this global health crisis, and that is, to some extent, it has afforded us plenty of time to be reflective and come face-to-face with the kind of human “stuff” that is us; spiritually, morally, emotionally and intellectually. The countdown is on, and as we draw closer to those days of awe that is a hallmark of our High Holy season and our faith, like you, I find myself putting my life in review. In doing so, I find

that there is certainly room for improvement and yes occasions for sadness, but there are also pockets of great memories shared by family and friends. As I mark the first six months as President of the TBTST Men’s Club, I find myself asking: How can I spark greater interest in the Men’s Club? Why aren’t more members showing up for our monthly scheduled meetings? True, an outdated contact Email listing might be partly at fault, but of those that do get the word, surely the turnout could/should be higher? Rather than castigate myself, I believe I found part of the answer in a 1970s hit tune “Now That We’ve Found Love.” The tantalizing lyrics beg to ask the question: “Now that we’ve found love, what are we going to do with it?” One can choose to embrace that love and nurture it so that it blossoms into some-thing sweet and beautiful, or one can choose to take that love for granted until it withers and dies. In a similar vein, I challenge our Men’s Club with this question: Now that we have founded this wonderful organization, what are we going to do with it? Are we willing to put in the energy and effort so that it grows into something utterly amazing, or let it stagnate and diminish in stature from lack of caring and support? For the months, even years that lie ahead, I urge you to invest more of your time in the Men’s Club so that it becomes a more thriving component within the TBTST family. To those members that always answer the call, I thank you. I am going to end my thoughts with these prayerful words from a compilation by Marianne Williamson: “Dear God, there is so much danger in the world today. There is so much insanity, so much darkness, and fear. Our human resources are not enough to counter the evil on our streets and in our minds. Dear God, please send a miracle. Into every country and home, into every mind and heart, may the power of Your spirit trigger the light of goodness within us, activate the holiness, remind us of the truth within. For Lord, we live in fearful times, and we long for a different world. We surrender what is to the bonfire of your genius. Refine this metal. Refashion our creations, remind us of the eternal truths. Return us to our native grace. Take back what we have kept and thus condemn. For you are the mighty one and can do what we cannot.” I extend my very best wishes to all for a safe fast, and may we all enjoy a healthy, and sweet New Year. L’Shana Tova!Aubrey

Stay at Home Ball

Imagine going to a wonderful gala at our beautiful synagogue… What might you have needed?

Temple Beth Torah Sha’aray Tzedek

cordially invites you to our first Stay at Home Ballformerly the 2020 Winter Gala

The evening was designed for our members to have fun and enjoy each other’s company while providing much needed funds to help keep our synagogue financially secure. This was a plan that has been stopped short due to Covid-19.

Sadly, no more social gatherings for a while. However, our synagogue still has financial needs to keep it running. Won’t you please consider the costs for everything you’ll no longer need for such an event and write a check to TBTST?

Any amount will help.

All donors will be listed in our Scroll under the Stay at Home Ball event summary.

Don’t miss out on this fabulous opportunity to help our synagogue… while comfortably watching TV in the safety of your home!

Thanks,

Stay at Home Committee

Create A Jewish Legacy at TBTSTCreating your own Jewish legacy ensures your passions and the Jewish values you cherish will continue beyond your lifetime. Learn how the Life & Legacy program makes it easy and affordable to preserve and strengthen programs and organizations YOU care about that support Jewish life today and for generations to come – and potentially enjoy tax benefits.

Expressing Your IntentIt’s easy to create your own personal legacy. Start by signing a simple letter of intent, a non-binding promise to leave a gift in the future to the organization(s) of your choice. With a legacy gift you can still take care of your family while also leav-ing something to preserve the programs and organizations that you care about. Most legacy gifts are simple designations in a will, retirement account or life insurance policy. Consult your financial adviser regarding these or other planned gifts.

Confirming Your GiftLegacy gifts have increasingly become part of future planning when individuals and families meet with their financial, insur-ance and legal advisers. Temple Beth Torah Sha’aray Tzedek and participating organizations in The Life & Legacy program can help facilitate your philanthropic planning by offering access to investment options such as gift annuities and donor advised funds. Let us know if you have already worked with a financial adviser to include supporting them in your plans. If you designate one of the Life & Legacy participating organizations, they may earn an additional financial incentive.

There are many ways, including making a bequest in a will or trust; naming the organization of your choice as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy, IRA, or pension fund; giving a gift of cash or assets; setting up a charitable gift annuity or charitable remainder trust. Please consult your professional adviser to determine which method of giving is best for you.

The tree has always been a symbol of life and strength in the Jewish tradition. The parts of the tree depend upon one another just as those in need in our com-munity depend upon Temple Beth Torah Sha'aray Tzedek for help and support.

In the same manner, Temple Beth Torah Sha'aray Tzedek depends upon the generosity of our community to enable us to continue to provide that support. The Tree of Life is the perfect symbol to allow us to recognize the generous donors who, in turn, help us to continue providing necessary services to our community.

Consider honoring a friend or relative’s birthday, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversary, etc. or using this as a memorial gift. By purchasing a leaf for the Tree of Life, you will not only be helping the Tree to grow,

but you will also be helping TBTST to grow, now and in the future. There are gold, silver and bronze leaves available at a price of $180.If you are interested in supporting TBTST, please contact our office and we will gladly assist you. You can also email [email protected] or make your donation online at www.tbtst.org.

Thank you for your donation.

Yahrzeit is a Yiddish word, which literally means “time of year” or memorial. Jews of Ashkenazi descent use this term. Sephardim call this commemoration nahala, in Ladino. This custom is widely observed and based on the Jewish tradition of commemorating the death of a relative.

All the Yahrzeit rituals are deeply ingrained in the Jewish life. The common rituals that are performed in the honorable memory of the departed soul include reciting the Kaddish prayer and lighting a Yahrzeit candle.

Yahrzeit also includes the action of donating charity in memory of a deceased loved one. Through the performance of the mitzvah of tzedakah in the name of the departed, the merit of the deed is shared with the soul of the late relative, as their memory is enhanced

PRAYERS FOR THE SICK If a relative or friend is suffering from an illness, perhaps you would like to recite a special prayer for the speedy recovery of the ailing person. Traditionally, the Hebrew name of the sick person and the Hebrew name of the sick per-son's mother are mentioned during the prayer. It would be helpful if you would provide us with this information when you make your request. Prayers for the recovery of the sick are customarily accompanied by a gift to a deserving charity. The merit of this kind deed arouses God's mercy and His powers of healing. Although any amount is deemed appropriate on such an occasion, a gift of CHAI - $18 - or multiples of 18 - is particularly fitting when pleading for a person's recovery from sick-ness. CHAI in Hebrew means life. The two Hebrew letters which constitute the word - CHET and YUD - have the numeri-cal equivalents of eight and ten respectively, together yielding the sum of eighteen. For this reason it has become a custom to give charity in the amount of CHAI when praying for the well-being of a suffering person. Enclosed please find a contribution in the sum of $ ______________________________________________________Please make a Misheberach (Prayer for the recovery) for:Name (English) ___________________________________________________________________________________(Hebrew)_______________________Mother's Name (Hebrew)___________________________________________

The WECARE community outreach program operates a food pantry that provides over 3,500 bags of groceries each year to our neighbors in need regardless of race, religion, age, gender or nationality. We could not accomplish this important mitzvah if not for the generous donations we receive year round from caring individuals, organizations, schools, synagogues and businesses in our community. Thanks to United Way of Broward County, we are also able to distribute fresh produce to needy people through Project Lifeline. Donations are greatly needed and appreciated to keep our shelves stocked so we can help the many men, women and children needing our services throughout the year. Currently, WECARE provides enough free non-perishable food and fresh produce to prepare over 65,000 meals for our neighbors in need. WECARE also collects small toiletry items, provides free medical equipment loans including wheelchairs, walkers and canes, distributes hand-knitted items to nursing home residents, and collects eyeglasses and hearing aids that are sent to New Eyes for the Needy. Donations of toiletry items and medical equipment are very much appreciated. Facts about Hunger in Broward County According to Million Meals Committee, there are 19 active food pantries in Broward County inclusive of the Soref JCC WECARE Food Pantry, and 4 active food banks. The Broward Regional Health Planning Council, Inc., Food Security Survey Report notes that 44% of all students enrolled in Broward County elementary schools qualify for free and reduced lunches. 15% of 56,873 Broward children live in poverty.

Choosing a doctor to trust with the care of your eyes, your precious sight, can be a difficult decision. You want someone board-certified, professional and experienced. But you also want a doctor who will take the time to listen to you, explain things and treat you with kindness and respect.
