WELCOME TO AWME 2012

It may be a long way to the top, to quote AC/DC, but the Australasian Worldwide Music Expo has certainly covered a lot of distance in just five years. AWME has established itself as a key event on the music calendar and a destination for artists, industry insiders and music lovers to come together to experience great music from across the globe.

This year local artists across all genres will share the stages with artists from more than ten countries including Mali, Nigeria, Italy and Jamaica. As well as a forum for musicians to connect with new audiences, AMWE is a significant marketplace, attracting international bookers, programmers and industry representatives and generating touring, recording and performance opportunities for artists.

So to all participating artists and audiences – enjoy AWME 2012. Your music journey starts here.

Welcome to the fifth annual Australasian Worldwide Music Expo (AWME). In five short years, AWME has quickly become a cornerstone marketplace for Australia’s music sector, attracting artists and organisations from across Australia, the AsiaPacific and Indian Ocean regions, as well as Europe and North America.

This year delivers yet another fantastic program, which includes the much anticipated world premiere of Archie Roach’s Into The Bloodstream. We’re delighted to share this with representatives from some of the world’s leading festivals and world music events.

The Australia Council is proud to be a principle partner of this event. We wish you a wonderful AWME 2012!

Womin Jeka mirambeek beek. Boonerwurung Nairm derp Bordupren uther willam.

Welcome to my country, the land of the great bay of the Boonerwurung people, our beautiful home. On behalf of the Boonerwurung, a clan of the greater Kulin nations, I welcome you to our land.

Today Melbourne is a great multicultural city of the world and this special place continues to carry forward the spirit of our tradition. This land will always be protected by the creator, Bunjil, who travels as an eagle, and by Waarn, who protects the waterways and travels as a crow.

As the spirit of my ancestors lives, let the wisdom and the spirit of generosity which Bunjil taught us influence the opportunities that may arise at this meeting place.

Womin Jeka mirambeek beek. Boonerwurung Nairm derp Bordupren uther willam. Welcome!

Welcome to Melbourne and the fifth anniversary of the Australasian Worldwide Music Expo (AWME). As each year passes, AWME continues to nurture and build on the vital music industry connections that have been established with our friends and counterparts from around the world. We are pleased to say that in five years, we have broken down geographical limitations that divide us from our neighbours, and created an event which fosters the growth of the highest quality Indigenous, roots and world music from all corners of the globe. In 2012, AWME will host one of its largest conference programs to date, with the inclusion of high profile local and international keynote speakers, as well as present yet another worldclass public music program. We would like to thank the Australia Council for the Arts, Arts Victoria, Tourism Victoria, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Arts Centre Melbourne and all of our supporters for making AWME possible. We look forward to sharing four days of incredible music, dialogue, and cultural exchange.

MEDICS An exhilarating blur of passion and movement, The Medics bring a rare sense of urgency to their melodic pop songs. Hailing from the tropics of Far North Queensland, the fourpiece has emerged as one of Australia’s most electrifying indierock bands. • Sophie Koh is a critically acclaimed Melbourne based singersongwriter. Koh first came to prominence after being “unearthed” by Triple J in Darwin in 2003 and has since toured around Australia, supporting acts such as The GoBetweens, The Eels, Paul Kelly, Pete Murray and Howie Day.

• Singersongwriter Sue Ray performs an emotive and original brand of altcountry. Ray has been performing professionally for over 15 years – in that time, she has released two critically acclaimed albums, Red Roses and Best Beware (2008). Ray’s music has a depth and darkness that produces a soulful take on countryfolk.

Bandleader Lance Ferguson and his ninepiece Melbourne outfit The Bamboos have come a long way since forming in 2001. Initially inspired by the instrumental raw funk of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, they made waves internationally and have subsequently been labelled one of the greatest funk and soul bands of our time. • Taking cues from the likes of James and Aretha, as well as New York’s banging modern soul scene, Saskwatch smash out their live shows hard, rough and tight – just like the old days. Leading the ninepiece Melbourne soul explosion is singer, Nkechi Anele, who adeptly takes audiences on a journey from the depths of heartache to overwhelming joy in just one show. • Echoing the likes of Curtis Mayfield and Donny Hathaway, Electric Empire brings a funkedup neosoul twist to the oldschool sound. The Melbourne based threepiece deliberately shunned highend digital sound on their recordings, opting for warm analoguesmooth compositions. Having played Glastonbury in 2010, the band is continuing to make an indelible mark on the music scene both locally and abroad. • Queenslandbased multiinstrumentalist Dave Dow seamlessly blends roots, soul, R&B, gospel, jazz, funk and down ‘n’ dirty Motown sounds, creating a

musical experience that has universal appeal. With a disarming personality that shines through on stage, Dave Dow has the capacity to captivate audiences with his musical aptitude and versatility. • Soul music enthusiast, record collector, radio presenter and DJ, Vince Peach brought his vinyl records and his passion for soul music to Australia from Liverpool in 1982. He plays the music he loves and wants the world to know about it – from the cool sound of James Brown to the Temptations and everything in between. • PBS Radio’s Zack Rampage is one of Melbourne’s most versatile DJs. Zack spins everything from the best of old school hiphop to down and dirty funk and soul. His weekly PBS 106.7FM radio program Rampage is an aural beat laden expedition, spanning the birth of rap to the explosion of golden era grooves.

LO GRIYO

OKA’s signature style is a smooth hifidelity sound full of beautiful uplifting melodies, tones and textures, cooked over raw didgeridoo rhythms and heavy dance driven grooves. A live collective where no two gigs are the same, OKA play their own hybrid of roots, reggae, dub and jazz, marinated in electronica with a powerful, uniting Indigenous overtone. • Lo Griyo is a laboratory of sound experiments where trance becomes a consistent gateway between the various influences that constitute the duo’s music. Lo Griyo creates a unique, hybrid music, just like the outfit’s land of origin, Reunion Island. • With Nouveau Noir, cultures converge in an energetic mix of live AfroLatin percussion and electronic samples. Intricate rhythms weave around deep global club sounds with an authentic African flavour. Irresistible dance music with an insistent electronic depth and flexible live sensibility. • Ennio Styles’ love of the funkiness has led him to discover an everexpanding range of soulful sounds. • Globe trotting Melbourne based DJ, Mamacita Bonnita, is inspired by the technicolour vibrations of global golden era sounds, combined with a healthy dose of spiced up modern bass lines of contemporary European and American music culture.

When ARIA award winners Kavisha Mazzella and Irine Vela team up with David De Santi and Mark HolderKeeping from the legendary Zumpa band, they become I Viaggiatori – The Voyagers. I Viaggiatori play lively, old time Italian folk music from the 19th century and beyond. It’s romantic, poignant, frenzied, sweet and earthy. It’s a place where memory sits down with imagination to share a good coffee and a glass of grappa then have a good yarn. Their performance will be accompanied by a screening of Dall’Italia All’Australia (From Italy to Australia) – a black and white silent film of 60 minutes duration commissioned by the acclaimed Italian film producer Stefano Pittaluga, which first screened in Italy in May 1925. • Officina Zoe was started in the early 1990s by Lamberto Probo, Donatello Pisanello and Cinzia Marzo. The outfit soon sparked the revival of the PizzicaPizzica, one of the oldest and most fascinating types of rhythm and traditional dancing in Salento, Italy. Officina Zoe presents the most popular contemporary expression of the Pizzica and Taranta. They have not only triggered the revival of Pizzica, but have also broadened the tradition’s repertoire of songs with their original compositions which preserve the spirit of social dance in its traditional form.

Boubacar Traoré carries within him all the beauty of African blues. A diamond among the jewels of Mandingo music, he shines with the dark glow of exceptional purity. His unique, selftaught guitar technique owes a great deal to his kora influences, but its shades and phrasing also suggest the great bluesmen of the deep South – think Blind Willie McTell, Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters. • Fusing his soulful music and rich, powerful voice with his personal story, Kutcha Edward’s music reflects on life as an Aboriginal man in white Australia. Kutcha’s deep and rhythmic tones are that of a storyteller whose inspiring songs are full of passion and spirit that evoke a connection to an intimate and resilient songline. Kutcha’s magnificent singing, his poignancy and humour, makes for an unforgettable musical journey with one of Australia’s Indigenous icons and celebrated singersongwriters.

• Iration Steppas are at the vanguard of the worldwide dub movement. The UK based crew initially cut their teeth on a ‘90s soundsystem, focusing primarily on spinning dubplates before venturing into their own productions. One of the most celebrated and successful Scottish folk bands of recent times, Breabach command the stage with flare, charisma and a sound that is as expansive as it is distinct. THE BOMBAY ROYALESeun Anikulapo Kuti is the youngest son of Nigerian Afrobeat luminary, Fela Kuti, who in his late teen years took control of his father’s 16piece funk fuelled orchestra, Egypt 80. Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 create a potent brew of splintery guitars, an indestructible rhythm section, and one of the finest horn sections on the planet. • The magic and mayhem of vintage Bollywood collides in spectacular fashion with a dizzying blend of Tarantinoesque surf, wild disco, flamboyant theatrics, swirls of kaleidoscopic colour, outrageous costumes and utterly irresistible dance moves that sweep entire crowds off their feet. This is what happens when The Bombay Royale hits the stage. • Hugo Mendez is a DJ, labelboss and music researcher at the forefront of the Tropical scene in Europe. MANA MAORI TO THE WORLDThe Maori language is one of the most endangered in the world. Only 4 percent of the total New Zealand population can speak Maori and just under a quarter of Maori people can hold a conversation in Maori.

In the last two decades, there has been a renaissance of Maori culture, language and identity. Contemporary Maori music has been an outlet for the rise of waiata (songs) that reflect the social, cultural and political changes in Aotearoa New Zealand. Waiata Maori has developed organically leading to a rich diversity of musical expression with one common feature – the Maori language.

This panel explores the recent history of contemporary Maori music, the diversity of Maori musical expression, a framework that ties it all together and the Maori music industry’s international aspirations. Live performances from Waiata Maori artists: Wai, Apanui, Kirsten Te Rito and Iwi highlight the first wave of Waiata Maori artists taking Mana Maori to the World.

The band comprises up to nine members playing everything from mandola, lagerphone and fiddle, to trumpet and accordion. Projecting an overwhelming sense of joy coupled with all out anarchy, the Brisbane based outfit has developed a loyal band of followers over a few short years.

THE MEDICS themedics.com.au “The Medics weave their way through rock songs with a melodic pop heart. They seem like a band to believe in.” Andrew McMillen on The Vine. An exhilarating blur of passion and movement, the band brings a rare sense of urgency to their songs. The Medics story started in the tropics of Far North Queensland and has seen them develop into one of Australia’s most exciting new indierock bands performing at Splendour in the Grass, Big Day Out, Laneway, Groovin’ the Moo, Woodford and The Dreaming Festivals.

THE PERCH CREEK FAMILY JUGBAND perchcreek.com The Perch Creek Family Jugband sing and dance a unique blend of bluegrass, oldtime jazz, and country blues. Their signature sound consists of tight fivepart vocal harmonies soaring over the downhome sounds of the fivestring banjo, washboard, jug, doublebass, harmonicas, saw, trombone, kazoo, ukulele, guitar, melodica and tapdancing.

VINCE PEACH soultime.com.auSoul music enthusiast, record collector, radio presenter and DJ, Vince Peach brought his vinyl records and his passion for soul music to Australia from Liverpool in 1982. Vince is a regular DJ around Melbourne and presenter of the fabulous Soul Time on Melbourne community radio station PBS FM. He plays the music he loves and wants the world to know about it. From the cool sound of James Brown to the Temptations and everything in between - Vince Peach is the DJ guaranteed to keep you movin’ and groovin’.

WATUSSI watussi.com.au Watussi’s live shows are a cacophony of blistering horns, partyfuelled rhythms and rocking roots basslines. Led by charismatic Columbian expat, Oscar Jimenez, Watussi are a welltravelled troupe of Latinotinged roots rockers. Pioneers of the Latin scene in Sydney, Watussi continue to sellout shows across the country with their invigorating live shows.

YASMIN LEVY (ISRAEL) yasminlevy.net The acclaimed Ladino singer, Yasmin Levy, was greatly influenced by her late father, Yitzhak Levy, a composer, cantor, official collector and preserver of the 500year old canon of Sephardic Jewish music. Yasmin is regarded as one of Israel’s premier performers, and a visionary contemporary composer and interpreter, who will ensure Sepahrdic Jewish music’s place in history. Yasmin’s deep, spiritual singing, passionate vocal delivery and worldclass touring band have meant sellout shows in major venues and festivals worldwide.

ZACK RAMPAGE pbsfm.org.au One of Melbourne’s most versatile DJs, Zack spins everything from the best of old school hiphop to down and dirty funk and soul. His weekly PBS 106.7FM radio program Rampage is an aural beat laden expedition, spanning the birth of rap to the explosion of golden era grooves.
