HUNTER BUSINESS CHAMBER AWARDS 20174 |

Thursday 31 August saw more than 560 guests from the region’s leading businesses gather at NEX, Wests City for the highly anticipated 2017 Hunter Business Awards.

The awards were presented at a gala dinner sponsored by the University of Newcastle.

From a large pool of very impressive finalists, winners were awarded across 10 different categories, with the night culminating in the Business Leader of the Year Award.

Two very special people were remembered on the night for the incredible legacies they have left the business community.

Hunter Business Chamber CEO Bob Hawes took a few moments to honour the memory of last year’s Hunter and NSW Business Chambers’ Business Leader of the Year winner Michael Slater who passed away recently.

“Michael was a distinguished and truly inspirational and dedicated leader. He left enormous boots to fill,” Bob said.

“His contribution to business was fittingly recognised last year as both the regional and state award winner for the Business Leader of the Year and we will remember him for the fantastic impact he had on the community.”

The 2017 Business Leader of the Year Award went to Greg Budworth, Group Managing Director of Compass Housing.

In honouring the memory of former Hunter Business Chamber CEO Kristen Keegan, the Young Business Executive Award was renamed and the

2017 Kristen Keegan Young Business Executive Award was presented to Ben Dewson of Holistic Industries.

Kristen passed away earlier this year and was remembered on the night for her love of the Hunter and her belief in empowering young people to be great leaders.

“Kristen’s work was highly regarded and she firmly cemented her place as a leader in the Hunter Region,” Chamber President Jonathan Vandervoort said.

“She is so greatly missed and this award is a truly fitting way to recognise the significant contribution Kristen made in nurturing and mentoring the careers of young people around her.”

The Chamber congratulated all finalists and acknowledged the partnerships with its valued sponsors who make it possible to provide such recognition. This included the major sponsor University of Newcastle, award sponsors Hunter Water, NSW Minerals Council, Greater Bank, Pitcher Partners,

Port Authority of NSW, Quarry Mining and Construction Equipment, CPA Australia and wine sponsors Drayton’s Family Wines, Tullochs and Murrays Craft Brewing Co.

Guests were entertained by the sweet sounds of Novatones - a Hunter based barbershop style choir and great music by Good Company throughout the evening.

HUNTER BUSINESS CHAMBER AWARDS 20176 |

The President’s Award is the only one not selected by a judging panel but, as the name suggests, by the President of the Chamber.

It was established some years ago to provide the Chamber with an opportunity to recognise companies, individuals and organisations that have added special value to the business community in ways that are not recognised by other awards.

The University of Newcastle has an exceptional history of varied accomplishments that contribute significantly to our community.

Over 50 years, the organisation and its leading educators have achieved a long list of accolades, and their world-class researchers are recognised for their contribution to many fields.

UON is a research-intensive institution with an outstanding record of achievement.

The organisation is ranked among the

top 1 per cent of the world’s universities, according to the QS World University Rankings for 2017 and 2018.

The institution’s performance on the world stage continues to impress as the organisation realises its vision of being global leaders in equity, education and research.

There is a range of impressive statistics and rankings that have seen UON capture regional, national and international attention in recent times.

UON has the largest number of indigenous students at an Australian University and recently celebrated the Wollotuka Institute’s accreditation by the World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium, an Australian first.

It has embraced innovation and has been a key driver in helping the region achieve and exceed its ambition to integrate elements of the digital economy to benefit students, the community and business.

THE UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE 2017 HUNTER BUSINESS CHAMBER PRESIDENT’S AWARD

THE PRESIDENT’S AWARD IS THE ONLY ONE NOT SELECTED BY A JUDGING PANEL BUT AS THE NAME SUGGESTS, BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE CHAMBER.

IT WAS ESTABLISHED SOME YEARS AGO TO PROVIDE THE CHAMBER WITH AN OPPORTUNITY TO RECOGNISE COMPANIES, INDIVIDUALS AND ORGANISATIONS THAT HAVE ADDED A SPECIAL VALUE TO THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY IN WAYS THAT ARE NOT RECOGNISED BY OTHER AWARDS.

The University of Newcastle has taken huge strides to work with its researchers, industry, business and other education providers such as TAFE NSW to better customise its offerings which in turn gives students career paths locally and improves retention of talent in the region.

Most recently, the organisation commissioned their landmark NeW Space facility on Hunter Street in Newcastle which is not only inspiring the community but also the undergraduates who now experience a learning environment at the cutting edge.

We know the University is not stopping there. It is stepping up to the plate to continue to play a major part in revitalisation of not only Newcastle CBD but also our southern neighbours in Gosford.

The Hunter Business Chamber looks forward to the University of Newcastle continuing on trend and we know successful outcomes in their mission and strategy will continue to bring greater benefits well beyond just this region.

University of Newcastle Vice Chancellor Professor Caroline McMillen said the University of Newcastle is greatly honoured to receive the prestigious 2017 President’s Award from the Hunter Business Chamber.

“As a university with a proud history of engagement with industry and business, we look forward to continuing to work in partnership with the Hunter’s premier business community to harness education, research and innovation to create the jobs and industries of the future,” Professor McMillen said.

KRISTEN KEEGAN YOUNG BUSINESS EXECUTIVE (AGE 18-35)

This award recognises an inspirational young professional aged between 18-35 years who has built a successful career within an organisation.

Ben’s journey started when he deferred the commencement of his tertiary studies in 2001 to join the Royal Australian Air Force Reserves. After completing his initial required service he returned to Newcastle and worked as a security guard and other various jobs while completing his teaching studies.

In July 2007 he founded Holistic Security with a business partner while completing his final internship as an Early Childhood Teacher through the University of Newcastle. During the next four years he played the role of classroom teacher at two public schools as well as Managing Director for Holistic Security.

In 2013 Ben realised the growth of his own business required him to move into it full time. In 2015 Ben and his partners developed 5th Level Training, a registered training organisation (RTO) of which he was CEO.

Then in 2016 they negotiated a merger with another RTO and Holistic Industries was born. Ben took on the role of General Manager of the new training arm as well as Managing Director of Holistic Security.

In 2016 they acquired part of 5 Sawyers Bar and Restaurant and Ben became Licensee and took on one of the three Director’s roles, overseeing operations.

In addition to his roles in Holistic Industries, Ben began working part-time for GWG Partners, recruiting in the legal and financial sectors in May 2017. He also works casually as a Support Worker in Samaritans’ Community Justice Program as well as a teacher for TAFE NSW.

Ben believes that a good leader is someone who possesses integrity and would never ask their employees to do something they wouldn’t do themselves.
