News from Club HQ (with John Wright) First off, we have details on the World Radio television handbook 2020, on how to order. As we are ordering 20 of the books by air cargo, hopefully as usual these are in your homes for Christmas. An order form is in this magazine. You can have it satchel delivery or for a cheaper price you can collect from my place at Roselands. Next Meeting Sydney. Saturday 30th November, and this will be our Xmas meeting Starting at 1.30pm. 71 Hilton Ave, Roselands. 0416 766 490, yep my place and for a BBQ. Bring along some stuff you do not want and sell. I still have one box of books, also spare parts box and a box of valves including 4 X 6146 valves. All for a very easy price FREE however, hopefully these will be shared out as was from a deceased estate VK2 and I was given these parts. I might even find in the shed a few bits and pieces to add to the pile. Committee meeting is at 1pm. Stupid me forgot the deadline and did the magazine 1 week early, Craig had great delight, saying it was next weekend. Must be getting old! Unique Radio is now taking a break leading up to the New

Year Xmas period. Tim runs the station on his own so we will hear him in the New Year. Radio 4KZ on 5055 kHz heard from 0500 each day, it’s at a good signal level around 0800 in Sydney. Brisbane Hi guy's, next ARDXC BBQ will be 11am Saturday 30th November at our house. This will be our last for the year. Hope you can make it. Cheers John & Colleen 0429176131 Sydney AGM Saturday 5th October at the hall in a community, 12 Avoca St, Ropers Crossing, in western Sydney. Statement by a member who is not a member of the committee, to the correctness of the accounts, to be read out. This was John Smith, without prejudice. John agrees that the accounts are correct. Treasurer Geoffrey Wright, Ordinary committee members are, Denis Smithson, John Sanderson, Dennis Allen, David Brown and Nick Lambropoulos. All elected unopposed. Member to view the books 2019-2020 accounts and to give a statement, without prejudice to the AGM 2020. Craig Seager from Bathurst volunteered. Meeting closed1.02pm Sydney next year at the brand-new Peakhurst Inn. Yes, the whole of the Peakhurst Inn is being pulled down and there halfway through the rebuilding process. Hopefully they also give me more money to run my A Grade Rugby League side, next year, seeing as though we made it from 4th to the grand final, and only 1 try in the result. I wish to thank very much Denis and Janet for the wonderful room and also to Janet and Pam for looking after all us males. Cooking washing up etc…. (The meeting was to have started at 12.30pm, and under rules we must start within 30 minutes). Hence, we waited till 12.57pm for Nick. Nick Lambropoulos arrived at 1.10pm, not realising what a long way it was from the inner Sydney area. DXpedition Bargo got a mention as Margaret Fulton has passed away, (famous Aussie cook) at 94? As she donated a heap of money to keep Wirrimbirra going. (JW) Some radio-related photos from our European correspondent, John Schache, currently touring in the UK.

Radio Japan`s blowing off its NAm SW audience

years ago. 11925 rechecked November 1 at 1336,

when also registered from both sites for the half-

INDIA AIR Thiruvanthapuram of Kerala State operating on SW 5010 & 7290 kHz is having transmitter problems. Those frequencies are not heard lately. Yours sincerely, (Jose Jacob, VU2JOS, National Institute of Amateur Radio, Hyderabad, India Oct 14, dx_india yg via WORLD OF RADIO 2004, DXLD)

KOREA NORTH DRM: 3560, 1210-, Voice of Korea, Oct 8. A pretty powerful signal received, with decode reading (on DReaM software): 'Dream Test' and '18.40 kbps EEP AAC Mono English Other Music'. Despite this, I'm only getting rare snippets of audio --- speech, but too short to get language. Despite a S9 + 10 signal, I suppose the ionosphere is not allowing for good demodulation. SNR measures 16.9dB. Still not enough for decent demod. There, at 1217, long enough to confirm it's NOT in English, but presumed Korean and into some martial music. Better at 1220. Now demodulating about 25% of the time, with the window now indicating, 'Dream DRM Transmitter. This is a test transmission'. A new DRM country for me. They don't appear to be on at 1310 on the 9th, nor the 10th or 11th when I checked, however (Walt Salmaniw, Masset BC, WOR iog via DXLD)

KOREA SOUTH Two radio stations operated by South Korea’s National Intelligence Service have slightly moved some of their broadcast frequencies to escape North Korean jamming.

November 2019 - Australian DX News - 12

The stations, Voice of the People and Echo of Hope, are on the air daily broadcasting a constant stream of news and information to an audience in North Korea. For years the North Korean authorities have attempted to stop citizens listening to the stations by jamming their reception – broadcasting heavy noise on the same frequency so the South Korean stations become unlistenable. On October 1, radio monitor Ron Howard alerted me that both stations each shifted three of their broadcast frequencies downwards by 5 kHz so the channels can currently be heard without jamming. The new frequencies are close enough that anyone tuning into the old one will hear the station and be able to slightly readjust for clear reception. A reception check confirmed the new frequencies: Voice of the People: 3475 kHz (ex 3480); 3905 (ex 3910); 6595 (ex 6600) and unchanged 3930, 4450 and 6520. Echo of Hope: 3980 kHz (ex 3985); 5990 (ex 5995); 6348 (ex 6350) and unchanged 4885. 6250 and 9100. The screenshot below shows the South Korean radio station signal on the left (the stronger, red line) and the North Korean jamming in the right (the weaker, yellow line). Until the frequency change, these were on top of each other.

North Korea hasn’t responded to the changes yet and continues to operate its jamming transmitters on their old frequencies, which means they’re sucking up valuable electricity and broadcasting over static. Despite being abandoned by most of the world in favour of satellite and Internet broadcasting, shortwave radio remains a vital technology for groups trying to get uncensored information into North Korea. A handful of stations target North Korea with dedicated programming including Voice of America, Radio Free Asia, KBS and the BBC. During the nighttime, domestic South

Korean AM radio stations can also be heard in North Korea. (Martyn Williams, North Korea Tech)

NEW ZEALAND RNZ Pacific's CYCLONE WATCH service is now in operation. Many remote communities in Pacific island countries rely on shortwave radio. Many remote communities in Pacific island countries rely on shortwave radio. Photo: RNZI The 2019-2020 Pacific Cyclone season has started, and officially runs from November 1, 2019 to the end of the cyclone season in 2020. If Cyclone Alerts are issued for South Pacific countries, RNZ Pacific will broadcast hourly updates of these bulletins if necessary, and whenever the situation changes. These will be heard either just before the top of each hour or following news bulletins at the top of each hour. We will do our best to keep listeners informed of all weather updates. We try to get damage reports from local authorities, non-governmental agencies active in the field and people affected who we manage to reach.

Our information comes from the Nadi Met Office in Fiji and from the New Zealand MetService. In addition, we can access weather bulletins from the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Samoa and Tonga Meteorological Offices. You can also follow us on twitter @RNZPacific and on @RNZPacific Facebook. In the event of a cyclone, RNZ Pacific will run a 24-hour

RSPdx Coming Soon! The SDRplay RSPdx is a single-tuner wideband full featured 14-bit SDR which covers the entire RF spectrum from 1kHz to 2GHz giving up to 10MHz of spectrum visibility. It contains three antenna ports, two of which use SMA connectors and operate across the full 1 kHz to 2 GHz range and the third uses a BNC connector which operates up to 200MHz.

The RSPdx is a replacement for the highly successful RSP2 and RSP2pro SDR receivers, which have been extensively redesigned to provide enhanced performance with additional and improved pre-selection filters, improved intermodulation performance, the addition of a user

selectable DAB notch filter and more software selectable attenuation steps . The RSPdx , when used in conjunction with SDRplay’s own SDRuno software, introduces a special HDR (High Dynamic Range) mode for reception within selected bands below 2MHz. HDR mode delivers improved intermodulation performance and fewer spurious responses for those challenging bands. The RSPdx will be available to purchase* in the next few weeks and is expected to retail at approximately £159 GBP or $199 USD (excluding taxes). Check out: https://www.sdrplay.com/rspdx/

Editor: John Wright E-mail: [email protected] The Listening Post is all about you, past future and present tense. Members are interested in reading about how you started in the hobby, and what you have been doing radio-wise recently. But we also want to hear about the person lurking behind the dials, so feel free to slip in a bit of more general life-based discussion. Too, this is the place to discuss any and all topics of current interest to radio hobbyists, but let’s keep it light and respectful.

We will kick off with our newest member of the club.

Martin Steiner from Denmark in Western Australia, who

has tried the mostly Cardboard box loop antennae.

Martin has taken this off from you tube from a German

designer as we understand.

“There is a shortwave antenna project on YouTube called

“Papp-Antenne” or translated from German it is called

“Cardboard Antenna” It consists of 2 copper loops and a

variable, 500pF capacitor. I found it very interesting, as it

covers a large section of the shortwave bands, but I wanted

a sturdier version for myself.

The antenna consists of a wooden frame 35cm X 35cm

made of dressed pine 30mm x 12mm.The centre of the large

frame holds a smaller square frame 10cm X 10cm made of

dressed pine 12mm X 12mm.I whole frame is just glued, no

screws have been used as they might have affected the

proper operation of the antenna. In order to strengthen the

frame I inserted 6mm wooden dowels in the outside corners.

The antenna coils were made of 10mm conductive copper

tape available from eBay. Since the copper tape has to be

folded over on the corners it is best to glue it to the wooden

frame with contact cement, because there is only one sticky

side on the tape. Once the coil was glued to the frame, I

soldered the connecting wires to the copper tape and finally

covered the coil with a coat of Bond Crete, in order to seal

the tacky parts of the copper tape. As a base for the antenna

frame, I used a hollow bit from a shelf which I found in an

Op-Shop. The connector for the antenna cable is mounted

in the back of the base.

Initially I built my antenna coil as shown on the youtube

video, but once I put the antenna in service, I had to trim

back some of the outside coil, in order to get the desired

frequency range. My finished antenna works between 3300

kHz and 17800 kHz. I am pretty happy with that. Bring on

the balmy summer nights where I can sit outside and use

my new table top antenna….and of course have a cold

beer!”

Nice, mate, Yes it’s definitely summer, thank goodness the

shed fridge is full, soon to be empty!-ed JW.

John Wright, Roselands NSW.

Received my unopened letter of a report to Radio Santa

Rosa Peru, looks like the address was wrong according to a

stamped “regecion”? Been trying to hear stuff but only 7270

Seoul and Nigeria 7255 0700-0800 UTC and not much else/

I did hear 1503 New Zealand Radio sport at 0630 UTC this

month once at a good level at peak but then nothing.

Looking forward to more sunspots!

Report to Radio Pilipinas 15460 0250.

Dennis Allen Milperra NSW

“Happy to report that I've got myself interested again and

managed to spend a bit more time back at the receiver. I've

even managed to log a few NFs over the past few days. So

now it's back to updating my Bandcharts so it seems I'm

going to busy for a week or two

On a not so happy a note a mate of mine showed me an

article from the local Bargo newspaper. I've known for quite

some time that the coal mines have been buying up all the

local land and now it appears that the Wirrimbirra Sanctuary

have to move all their animals out by the 31st of October! I

don't know what will happen about the cabins but I'll have to

go and find out what is going on!

With a bit of luck, we might not lose one of our DX-pedition

sites.”

Craig Seager, Bathurst NSW

“A bit of maintenance activity on antennas this side of the

mountains during October. Firstly, assisted Phil Ireland with

some running repairs to his G5RV, which had been the

victim of some weather. More recently, had to drop one of

the masts of my Horizontal Loop, as the wire insulation had

taken a beating from UV rays over the last few years, and

came down in a wind storm. Getting it down was OK, but

re-erection was another matter. Pole dancing like you’ve

never seen before!

The next job is to pull down the Shockwave 5/8 ground plane

for 6 metres. The top vertical section seems to have just

lifted out, and was lying in the guttering. A fairly robust

commercial unit, I have no idea what force of nature

separated the sections. Timely, as the VHF season fast

BNE-ed JW! Proposed Changes to Armidale Radio Frequencies Listeners to Armidale based radio station 2AD could soon be enjoying clearer and better quality audio under a proposed move from the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA). The proposal will see the station moved from its current AM radio frequency to a new FM transmission. Deputy Chair of the ACMA Creina Chapman said the proposal was part of a nationwide project converting commercial radio stations in regional areas from AM to FM.

“There are a lot of benefits to FM radio, the sound quality is better than AM and it can be more cost effective for the

station operators,” Ms Chapman said. “We have recently transitioned stations in a number of regional areas including places like Bathurst, Warrnambool and Port Hedland which has resulted in better broadcasting environments.” Ms Chapman said AM and FM radio signals have different characteristics, resulting in coverage differences. “AM signals are spread by ‘ground waves’, which are more susceptible to interference from power lines, electric lighting and electric motors,” she said. “FM signals spread via a transmitter on a high location such as a hill, mountain, building or tower and are less susceptible to electrical interference.” The ACMA has released a consultation paper on the proposal and is currently seeking feedback from the local community before going ahead. “We want to hear from the people of Armidale to get their views on the conversion proposal,” Ms Chapman said. If the proposal goes ahead, 2AD listeners will need to re-tune their radios to 94.3FM. Submissions on the Armidale proposal are due by Friday 8 November, 2019. More information about the AM-FM conversion is available here. If the ACMA approves the conversion, the timing of the transition would be up to the broadcaster. (Media release 33/2019 - 11 October) Radio Rhythm 1665 kHz Smiffy in BNE reports this has been mostly off air since the 18/10.

Edited by Craig Seager Editorial Address 12 Pellion Pl., Windradyne NSW 2795 E-mail [email protected] All-Digital on the AM Band? The FCC Might Allow It Soon Paul McLane ⋅ Oct 29, 2019 AM radio station operators in the United States may soon have the option of switching their transmissions to all-digital. It’s not a done deal; but the concept is about to take a step closer to reality, because the Federal Communications Commission will consider a proposal at its next meeting that would start a process. It will take comments on whether to allow AM band licensees to make the switch if they want. Ben Downs, VP/GM of Bryan Broadcasting in Texas, petitioned the FCC in March to initiate a proceeding to authorize the all-digital mode of HD Radio. Allowing stations to use all-digital transmission is an idea that some broadcasters feel could give business-challenged AM stations in the United States new life or at least another option. Turning off their analogue signals would mean that most existing receivers could no longer pick up that signal; but many AM broadcasters are currently heard on FM translator simulcasts now. And adding the all-digital AM option could open up new possibilities for them as the number of digital receivers in the marketplace continues to grow. One station, WWFD in Frederick, Md., owned by Hubbard, is operating in all-digital AM under special temporary authority, as RW has reported. Chairman Ajit Pai described the proposal in a blog post Monday: “Just as the FCC is trying to keep pace with changes in the market, so are AM radio operators, and the commission wants to give them as much flexibility as possible to compete in the digital age,” Pai wrote. “AM radio stations are currently authorized to operate with either analogue signals or hybrid signals, which combine analogue and digital signals. In three weeks, we will

consider a proposal to allow AM licensees to broadcast using an all-digital signal on a voluntary basis. It would seek comment on topics ranging from the predicted benefits of all-digital AM broadcasting to the interference potential of all-digital stations, as well as addressing the technical standards for all-digital AM stations. And because all-digital broadcasting would be on a voluntary basis, AM operators would be the ones deciding if transitioning is right for them.” “I think this is a uniquely positive step in AM revitalization,” Downs told Radio World on Tuesday. “We’ve talked for years about the rise in the noise on the AM band and how the quality of receivers has declined. But this is the first time we’ve had a chance to directly resolve both of these issues. With the approval of AM all-digital we have a technology that cleans up all the noise and hash we’ve been complaining about and sends an FM quality signal out of the speakers.” (Radio World)

Radio Romania Celebrates its 91st Anniversary 2019-11-01 13:55:00 Leyla Cheamil This Friday Radio Romania celebrates 91 years of existence. 'Hello, hello, this is Radio Bucharest' were the first words aired by this radio station on November 1st 1928, part of the first broadcast by the Radiotelephony Broadcasting Corporation in Romania. The words were uttered by the then president of the aforementioned institution Dragomir Hurmuzescu, who was also the founding father of the Romanian radiophony. Along the years Radio Romania broadcast messages from leading figures who had their impact upon the country's history.

Designed to be a means of information, education and entertainment, the Romanian public radio has been broadcasting for 91 years now adjusting its editorial policies and surviving the radical regime changes that took place during its existence, from the democratic system between

the two world wars, to the right-wing dictatorship around WWll, or the communist dictatorship that followed. Radio Romania celebrates 91st years of uninterrupted public service and broadcasts, 91 years of hard work and sacrifices but also of satisfactions in the sustained process of building the trust and confidence the station enjoys today, the institution's president and director general Georgica Severin said on this occasion. 'Either we speak about the accurate news on various daily events, the cultural broadcasts, the programmes devoted to theatre plays from national and world dramaturgy, or concerts and performances given by radio orchestras and choirs, this uninterrupted, relentless work has been always based on professionalism and respect for listeners', Georgica Severin went on to say. Besides its well-known channels, News and Current Affairs, Culture, Music and the Village Antenna, Radio Romania also boasts several regional and local stations, as well as the online channels devoted to children and young people. The Romanian Public radio started to broadcast for listeners abroad as early as the 1930s and is currently broadcasting in 11 foreign languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, Hebrew, French, German, Italian, Serbian, Spanish, Russian and Ukrainian as well as in the Aromanian dialect. On its 91th anniversary, Radio Romania scheduled a concert given by the National Radio Orchestra as well as an exhibition on its premises, which can be visited until November 5th under the suggestive title 'Afghanistan, Faces of War'. The exhibition has on display photos taken by Radio Romania's correspondent in that country Ilie Pintea. The exhibition was inaugurated in Los Angeles under the high patronage of the country's General Consulate in Los Angeles and the Cultural Institute in Bucharest in 2018 when Romania celebrated its 100th anniversary (RRI).

Solar Cycle 25 is Slowly Coming to Life November 2, 2019 / Dr.Tony Phillips Nov. 1, 2019: Breaking a string of 28 spotless days, a new sunspot (AR2750) is emerging in the sun’s southern hemisphere–and it’s a member of the next solar cycle. A picture of the sunspot is inset in this magnetic map of the sun’s surface from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory: How do we know AR2750 belongs to the next solar cycle? Its magnetic polarity tells us so. Southern sunspots from old Solar Cycle 24 have a -/+ polarity. This sunspot is the opposite: +/-. According to Hale’s Law, sunspots switch polarities from one solar cycle to the next. AR2750 is therefore a member of Solar Cycle 25. Short-lived sunspots belonging to Solar Cycle 25 have already been reported on Dec. 20, 2016; April 8, 2018; Nov. 17, 2018; May 28, 2019; July 1, 2019; and July 8, 2019. The

one on July 8, 2019, was significant because it lasted long enough to receive a number: AR2744. Record-keepers will likely mark it as the first official sunspot of Solar Cycle 25. If so, AR2750 would be the second.

The increasing frequency of new cycle sunspots does not mean Solar Minimum is finished. On the contrary, low solar activity will probably continue for at least another year as Solar Cycle 24 decays and Solar Cycle 25 slowly sputters to life. If forecasters are correct, Solar Cycle 25 sunspots will eventually dominate the solar disk, bringing a new Solar Maximum as early as 2023. (Spaceweatherarchive.com)

WWV celebrates 100 years Date : 26 / 10 / 2019 Author : Peter Clee - VK8ZZ Standard Time and Frequency station WWV celebrated its centenary on October 1. Radio amateurs were asked to participate by taking measurements and sharing their results The Reporter Herald says: The world’s oldest licensed radio station, which operates from a location just north of Fort Collins, turned 100 years old on Oct. 1 That may sound like a long time for a radio station, but WWV specializes in time. The radio station is best known for the broadcast of the national time standard — the atomic clock — which is closely synchronized with Coordinated Universal Time, the measure by which clocks are synchronized throughout the world.

It also has played an important role through the years setting frequency standards for other radio operators. In those early days of radio, “people didn’t know where they were on the dial,” Dave Swartz of the WWV Centennial Committee said. WWV broadcasts over six transmitters, each one dedicated for use on a single frequency. The transmitting frequencies and time signals of WWV, WWVB and WWVH, along with the four atomic (caesium) clocks from which their time signals are derived, are maintained by NIST's Time and Frequency Division, which is based in nearby Boulder, Colorado. WWVB's carrier frequency is maintained to an accuracy of 1 part in 1014 and can be used as a frequency reference. The broadcast time is accurate to within 100 ns of UTC and 20 ns of the national time standard. The transmitters for 2.5 MHz, 20 MHz, and the experimental 25 MHz put out an ERP of 2.5 kW, while those for the other three frequencies 5 MHZ, 10Mhz and 15MHz use 10 kW of ERP. Each transmitter is connected to a dedicated antenna, which has a height corresponding to approximately one-half of its signal's wavelength, and the signal radiation patterns from each antenna are omnidirectional. The top half of each antenna tower contains a quarter-wavelength radiating element, and the bottom half uses nine guy wires, connected to the midpoint of the tower and sloped at one-to-one from the ground—with a length of √2/4 times the wavelength—as additional radiating elements.
