Round 14 Week ending 13th & 14th July.

RECORD PRICE INCREASE.

~ The price of the Record has been increased to 9d.

It is felt that some explanation of this action is due to you, the reader. The greatest cause has been the cost of production and the determination of the Board to ensure that as much as possible the interests of the League shall be run at a profit, even if it is only a small one. At a cost of sixpence, one thousarid Records return£ 25, less than the cost of printing. However, the increase has been delayed in an attempt to make up for the early efforts and to give you a chance to assess the merit of what we think is ninepence worth of reading.

ST. GEORGE NOTES

The win against Western Suburbs last Saturday must be the best win the Club has had since beating Balmain just before the Finals in 1960. If that statement is a bit wild, then everyone will at least agree that the Third Quarter of the game was the Club's best quarter of football for many years. There was no stopping the flow of goals, and the St. George supporters were in raptures.

But that game is history now, and it's these next four against Easts, Norths, Navy and Wests that matter. What has been proved is that the team has the ability to win them all, and it is now only a matter of determined effort and concentration to win a place in the Final Four.

Best players were hard to single out last week in a team which played so well. However, the rovers Geoff Green and Rex Elvish were a pair of champions. Peter Taylor was at his dazzling best and Bob Serich, John Bolton, Gerry Willis and Ray Pegg did well. Ray Pegg's tally of 31 brings him closer to the lead in goalkicking and on his present form he could easily take it out.

RESERVE GRADE just couldn't get going against Wests, and inaccurate kicking for goal didn't help. However, Vic Barnett is not worried and he is confident that he can have his team at their top for the Grand Final.

Both teams are hoping for good wins against Easts today, in preparation for what should be great games against Norths at Hurstville next Saturday.

SOUTH SYDNEY NOTES

Souths, now definitely out of the four, received its bye points on Saturday last. THE SECONDS, with a slender hope remaining, are keen for the remaining four games.

The Fifteens and Under continue on their successful way. Last week they downed Newtown. Good displays were given by Graham Mulhearn, Ben Durbin, Alan Hayter, Chris Stephens, Neil Allard and 11Buttons''.

OUR BARBECUE at 13 Primrose Avenue, Rosebery, takes place after today's match at Trumper. Steaks at 2/- each will be available.

OUR CABARET at Maroubra Masonic Hall is on 27th July.

OUR BALL AND PRESENTATION NlGHT will be held at Maroubra R. S. L. on 7th September.

******************** BALMAIN NOTES.

A fighting win by our Second Grade and a run-away win by a weakened First Grade side made it a pleasant week-end for the Balmain Camp. The winning margin in our First Grade side should have been greater, but lack of kicking practice by some of our forwards, due to wet training grounds, could have been the cause of our bad average. It was good to see C ec Quilkey having such a good day. His backing up was done with purpose and his kicking boot was on. Coach Ray Rocher, whose average was bad, kicking six goals, dominated the forward line and was well fed by Nipper Birss on the flank, and Les Davis at centre-half forward.

THE SECOND GRADE, after a very patchy match, also finished: in front at the final bell; It would help if all players would get to the game earlier so that things could be organised and settled . .l.l\llilllilll!J.IAJL .lffi.IAJLJL - Thursday 12th Sept. -Petersham TownH

EASTERN SUBURBS NOTES

Last week we saw that old familiar pattern that we are becoming used to. Heaven only knows what our Club is heading for the way that things are going. Unfortunately, the small band who are trying to put us back where we should be are not getting any support.

I can just imagine what the old Bulldogs are saying - ''What a bunch of no-hopers."

Why can't every player attend training. If all the players ...00 · fail to get there could offer a legitimate excuse, I will be very ' surprised. Please make an effort fellows, and show everyone ·.that the Bulldogs can really play football.

There is not much I would like to say :about the game against ewtown. They had all the breaks they could possibly hope for. he Central Umpire did his best and I'll add no more to that

tement. Frank Dymock gave a hard time to every Newtown -forward who looked like touching his ball. More of it,

Brian Ratcliffe ha<d a torrid time keeping Ellis ck relatively quiet, but did his job well. See what training ~ Brian.??

but the odds were against them.

UMPIRES' NOTES By Ruby Craig.

John Dukes started his umpiring career at the age of eighteen with the Geelong & District Umpiring Association, as a Boundary Umpire. After two seasons in that Association, ~ohn moved to Brisbane where he commenced Central Umpiring. At 21 years of age John attained senior ranking in First Grade in Brisbane.

Due to business reasons, John went. out of the game for ten years, and this year is making a comeback to the game he loves so well.

Laurie O'Connor played with the Eastern Suburbs' Under 13s which won the PremierShip. As a cricketer, young Laurie played with Balmain Police Boys' Club in both B and D Grades, and both grades won the Premiership. Laurie also took Bowling honours with the Club and won Bowling honours in the "Green Shield" Competition.

Laurie is now in his second year as .a Boundary Umpire.

************

Ruckmen are breaking through the centre circle and I have seen the ball hit to the rover who has kicked it straight to the half-forward, without any of the opposing players even having a chance to touch the ball. In my opinion, this ruckman should have been penalised and a free kick given against him.

This rule should be strictly enforced so as to give both sides an equal chance.

T. Lahiff, PADDINGTON.

However, Jim Canlwcll, secretary of Melbourne, said in 1961 that Ron J);irassi, the Mclbotu-ne cuptain, 1nad•! .£7.000 ~ year out of foo!ball alone. It would be safe to say that he probably did better than that.

The real problcn1 for rnosi: clubs h the finding of new recruits. Once they chnit Uy n~uurai process from schools, technical schools and little leagues in tbc ;:.rc:i. Now, with the great expansion of r-.1dbourne, p;irticu!arly fur clubs like f'"itzroy, North Melbourne, South h1clbourne and l'v1elbourne, these sources have dried up. So club representatives have to roam the State, in fact the entire country, looking for talent.

End-of.Season Junkets

ANOTHER incentive for the players is the trips. It is tradition for a VFL team,

plus officials, to go on a marvellous endof-season junket. Surfers Paradise always has been the favorite, but just lately they ha".e been getting grander and grander. Last year Fitzroy and Gcclong went off to New Zealand. Collingwood went on a dreamy sea-cruise to Noumea. This year Melbourne and Carlton arc go· ing to Hawaii, and Geelong Football Club has just announced that a party of 50 players and officials will go to the US as an end-of-season jaunt to play exhibition matches in San Francisco. This will be the first exhibition of Australian football on the n1ainland.

wea1th. Thai's not true. 'Victorian football dr;iws the biggest crowds, but it hasn't anything like !he 1nooey of !he Rugby League clubs. There are no one-armed bandits to drag in the n1oney. So they resort to other n1ethods, such as raffles and dances.

The old story is that Victorian football is still under the thumb of the cricket associations. Whether this is true or not that extraordinary f;in;ltic, the Melbourn; football fan, watches the game under frightful conditions. The entertainment is fairly cheap, 6s. 6d. for the grandstand, 4s. 6d. for the outer. But there are only two grounds with real comforts-the Melbourne Cricket Ground and the St Kilda Cricket Ground. At the others often, the lavatories arc horrible. To ge; a seat you would need to go three hours beforehand. At many of the grounds the outer is only partially terraced. You stand tl1erc hemmed in on a slippery slope in a welter of litter and beer cans.

Of course, the clubs feel that if they had full control of their grounds they would be able to provide better facilities. That's a matter for great argun1ent. Collingwood has full control of it:1 ground, but the improvements have been for the soci;1I dub members rather than for the spectators.

Ap:irt from the problems of accom·· modalion, !he game is in <t very healthy state. NEWTOWN NOTES

The double win against Easts enhances our Final Four prospects. Today's game against Norths is a very vital one for both sides. Neither side can afford to lose four points at this stage in the Competition.

Barry Everard, promoted from the Reserves, gave an out standing display on the wing. Local junior Frank Kenny also played his best game of the season. Tex Allan, making a return to the game after being out with a broken hand, gave .a grand display of goal kicking. Playing in the early game, he booted six goals, and backing up in the Firsts, got another four. D. Parkinson went well in his first game, kicking three goals.

It was bad luck to see George Priestley go off with a shoulder injury. George ha.s one of the longest drop kicks in the game.

RESERVES had a very convincing win. Best.players in the game were Louie Lewis, Don Hill, Tex Allan, Ron Grose and Alec Dickson. New player Sharpe is showing very good form.

THIRD GRADE had a very convincing win over Easts in a lowscoring game in which the margin could have been greater, but for hitting the goal posts on four occasions. Scores were Newtown 3-11(29) and East Subs. 1-4(10).

To try and pick the best players would be very hard as all players played well. A word of praise to the backline for keeping Easts down to one goal.

We look like making the Final Four, chaps, but it all depends on Y 0 U. If you want to be in the finals - PLEASE ATTEND TR A IN ING .......... .

WESTERN SUBURBS NOTES

Last week saw our second defeat and congratulations must go to St. George who were far too good on the day. We had no answer to their tremendous burst in the Third Quarter.

Best players were centre half-forward John Godwin, back pocket Fred Reynolds and ruckman "Lofty" Coffey. Halfforward Tom Picknell capped off a fine display by kicking four goals. Rover John O'Donnell rates mention for his outstanding work in the packs.

RESERVE GRADE took the honours this week with a great win over the Competition leaders. They took e>'erything that St. George handed out and gave back the necessary extra to run out winners by seven points. Best players were Louie Dunn, who played himself back into First Grade calculations, and half-back "Tiger" Brown whose game was nea:r to perfect. Others to stand out were Trevor Larcombe, Jack Chester and Peter Burgess.

This week ----SYDNEY NAVAL!!!

First Grade intend to repeat their first round Victory, and the Reserves will be all out to avenge their defeat.

The Award is a richly deserved one and is a fitting tribute to the efforts made by Mr. Felstead in the interest of the Code.

His nomination will go to the A. N. F. C. on July 29th, with the best wishes of every supporter of the game in N. S. W.

BANKSTOWN NOTES

We have still not cracked the ice and are definitely wooden spooners. This has been our worst year on record. It makes one wonder what is wrong with our teams. The answer -lack of training and teamwork between players. The order should be NO TRAINING ---NO PLAYING, and perhaps we would get some results.

Congratulations to Balmain in their quest for Pennant honours. They gave a brilliant performance last weekend.

In our side of badly conditioned footballers, it was very hard to pick the best players.

Malcolm Cummings battled gamely all day long. Reg Garland, who has been our mainstay, notched four goals. Others who show{>d glimpses of recovering form were I. Rushton, J. Moore, B. Sellers and B. Savage.

In RESERVE GRADE, best were J. Burns, G. Byrne and T. Attfield.

Good luck on Saturday against University. Win the game, and then celebrate by attending our Beatnik Dance at The Scout Hall, Ninth Avenue, CAMPSIE. Bring your own liquor.

VOTE OF CONFIDENCE IN BOARD OF MANAGEMENT.

At the first meeting of the Delegates to the League held in the new offices at 307 Sussex Street, the Delegates, in a move unprecedented in the 60 year history of the League, voted the existing Board of Management to remain in office in 1964. This followed the tabling of the Audited Statement of Affairs and the disclosure by the Treasurer that the League had paid nearly £ l, 000 from debts ·incurred last year carried over to 1963. This is seen as a reflection of the confidence of the Clubs in the manner in which the affairs of the League have been handled by the Board.

NORTH SHORE NOTES

North Shore does it again'. After trailing for the first threequarters of the game, North Shorers' final attacking play defeated Sydney Naval by nine points. This game would be amongst the best ever witnessed at North Sydney Oval. Both sides played tremendous football, but the final quarter attack proved just too much for Navy. Picking best players out of the team destined to win this year's Grand Final i.s very hard, but those who should be mentioned are: Geoff Richards, Ian Sharpe, Dusty Miller, Reg Robinson and Ron Biok.

Coach Arthur Crisp played magnificently, but was forced to leave the field after· being smashed in the face. This resulted in him going to hospital and required two of his teeth to be extracted. This is most upsetting for North Shore as Arthur is a necessary player.

A repeated performance of the game against Navy on 21st June is quite sure.

RESERVE GRADE were not as lucky this week. Their game was a hard one and congratulations must go to Kevin Watson, Ken McConnon and Ray King for a splendid game; special mention to Terry Winslade who played his lOOth game with the North Shore Club. Jimmy Fuller, as full forward, played his usual good game, resulting in two perfect goals.

Newtown can't possibly put up anything to stop Narths' Grand Final run.

North Shore Club will be holding their 60th Annual Dinner on Friday 26th .July. More information will be forthcoming on this Special Occasion, so watch for it.

INTO THE STRAIGHT

With only four to go, contestants for the Final of both Grades are starting to sort themselves out. St. George's bustling win over Wests last week has allowed them to stay in calculations; additionally to making it really difficult to choose the outcome of future matches, they have brought to mind the possibility of South Sydney knocking Balmain over and stopping their run for the line.

At this stage Wests and Norths appear the only certainties to finish in a place. Navy, with a win and a half lead on St. George, have to play Wests, Newtown, Norths and St. George. Newtown, with one game on St. George, has an identical draw to St. George, with Easts, Norths, Navy and Wests to play.

It is impossible for St. George to improve their percentage by sufficient to catch Newtown and they must depend on Newtown losing two games.

Next week's game at Trumper, therefore, will be an allimportant one, as Navy strives to regain their early Season form and Newtown to keep in front of St. George and Balmain.

Norths go to the small Hurstville ground next Saturday and what-Saints did to Wests, they firmly believe they can do to Norths. Their third quarter burst of eight goals was no accident and their local knowledge of the small ground will be invaluable. Bob Serich has hit magnificent form and is gifted with a couple of beautiful rovers to get St. George's rucks working. Wily Captain, Ken Ward has proved himself the season's outstanding tactician and should give St. George a mighty chance to complete the double against Norths this Season. Followers will remember the mighty first round match when St. George 15-13 (103) shaded Norths by one point.
