Enrolments and exams. '.: :·' Enrolments remain similar in n' umber to those in the past two years. The failure rate in unit 053 ·{Principles of forest Pleasurement) has been carefully considered. · Because of a transfer of this uni.t .. from third to second· year, it was offered t w foe in 1977; in the first semester primarily for 2nd year students, in the second semester primarHy for 3rd year students • . :.· An unusua 1 proportion of students failed the unit in first semester. for 'reasons that are not certainly apparent. Some :of these students then elected to repeat the unit imnediately in second semester. · By doing S0 9 they subjected themselves to a heavy load, : in· the main cf four units instead of three. Not unexpectedly many failed again; so that the rate for the unit in second semester was again high. Failure arnongst .'. third year students however9 no higher .. than in previous : . .The Department will pay particular attention to the progress of year students in this unit in 1978. Student participation. The Departmental Comnittee met . on · .two occasions. Student participation in diS'cussions on the units; 031 (Forest biometrics and computer methods) ": and 053 {Principles of forest measurement) were partic- ularly valuable. · Work of graduate students. ·.;. .     Mr G.J. Hodges resigned from the position of tutor and Dr R.N. Byron and Mr M.P. Oa~son were appointed to the positions of Senior Tutor and Tutor. resp~ctively. Dr W.A. Heather wa~ promoted to Reader.

    Dr L.T. Carron was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal.
