With winter on its way we look forward to the Christmas Parade. We both want and need to make a few changes this year, but hopefully they will be for the better. You can get a flavour on the back page.

I would like to welcome Anneloes onto the committee and we have also had interest from several other residents to join and help shape the fu-ture CHCA. If you would like to be involved then please get in touch through the website – www.margam-village.org.uk

Finally, I would like to remind everyone to please keep an eye on the web-site and notice board for What’s on and happening in the village, we do try and keep them up to date.

    Kevin Thomas Acting Chairman

Footballer wins Scholarship and puts Margam Village on the UK Map…

16 year old Thomas John of Cwrt Y Carw has

won a two year scholarship with Hereford

    United.

Having started playing football at the age of

seven, Thomas quickly got picked up by Swansea

City and played for them for a record eight

years from under 9’s through to under 16’s.

He got selected for Wales under 16’s in 2010

and went on to receive his Welsh Cap in 2011.

He has now moved to Hereford where he trains

full time whilst attending Hereford 6th Form College to continue his education.

The son of proud parents Helen and Russell John, Thomas has a sister Cassie.

Both children attended Coed Hirwaun Primary School.

Mum Helen says: “Thomas has done fantastically well. He has already been se-

lected for the Hereford First Team Squad in a friendly against Birmingham at

Hereford Ground where he came on as Sub. He was selected in the first team

squad against Aston Villa, at Villa Park Ground in a Carling Cup Tie where he came

on as a sub at the end in front of 22000 peo-

ple at 16 years of age. We are so proud of

    him.”

    Update for the £100K Sub-committee

Since the last newsletter we have had formal agreement from the Village to put the £100K toward a Multi-use games are on the field. You may have seen 2metre deep soil samples being taken to the right of the ac-cess gates in order to ascertain what type of foundation and drainage will be required. Once the analysis has been completed then we will be in a position to finalise the plans and prepare a provisional costing for the project.

At this point the £100K committee will reconvene to discuss and agree the plans. The indicative costing will give us an indication of the level of Grant funding that we will need to complete the project. At this stage the MUGA will be put out to tender and this will give us more realistic costs and timescales.

Keep abreast of developments in the Village via the notice board and on our website – www.margam-village.org.uk

Kevin Thomas (Chair of the £100K committee)

On Thursday 13 October 85 residents and friends came together at the Bengal Lounge at Kenfig Hill for our first ever Curry and Quiz Night. Tickets at £15 per head started slowly but by a few days before hand we were worrying if we would have enough seats, luckily we did – just!

Abdul our host, selected an excellent varied two course meal for us, and there was plenty to go round. This was washed down with a variety of drinks, rang-ing from normal coffee to Champagne - some people were determined to push the boat out! The quizmas-ter was Ken Robbins from our village, and everyone agreed that it was at least one of the best they had attended. Well done and a big thank you to Ken.

There was great rivalry between the teams, ending in a four way draw. Ken managed a “stinker” of a question as a decider and the £40 prize was won by Pats Ex-pats.

Talking of prizes, we had some great donations for our raffle. There was a first prize of a Wii console (kindly donated by Payton Jewell Caines) a very nice coffee maker, some large tins of chocolates and finally a framed, signed photograph of the Welsh World Cup Rugby team. Another framed photograph was also auc-tioned off by Mr John Caines of Payton Jewell Caines (See opposite—ed) and made the remarkable sum of £160.

Those who did not want to “drink and drive” were treated to the experience of travelling up and back on a double decker bus, the driving services donated by Michael Hawkins.

Over £900 was raised for the CHCA fund, and as you will see from the photographs, a good night was had by all.

Welsh Rugby team helps raise £160 for the CHCA charity.

John Caines of Payton Jewell Caines auc-tioned and presented a signed photo of the Welsh rugby team at the quiz night to the winner Jeff Carne of Cwrt y Carw.

I am increasingly concerned about the amount of unnecessary on street parking in the village. We all have driveways and garages so why do some residents insist on causing others inconvenience by parking in some of the worst places, such as oppo-site the Shop and around the school. The most dangerous parking is on Cwm Cadno particularly around the speed bumps and the junctions with Heol Castell, Llwyn Arian and especially Min Y Coed. The road is curved and this bad parking makes it single track and a blind bend. I have had a few near misses and large or emergency vehicles will find it even worse. Please would the guilty parties be more aware you don't need to be there! Name withheld.

Do you have a view on this? If so please let us know…

Thank You Coed Hirwaun I wish to thank the good people who helped me on 27th September when I collapsed at the bus shelter out-side the school. Three gentlemen and a lady (teacher?) looked after me and stayed with me until the ambulance arrived. A kindness I very much appreciate and once again many thanks. Norma Howell.

We would like to take this opportunity to say a massive thank you to Taylor Wimpey for their support and spon-sorship.

Taylor Wimpey have sponsored our Mini Section of the football club and we have recently had the pleasure of ordering new kits for the children. We kept the children in suspense for a few weeks as they were desperate to

know what the new Mini sections club colours would be. We have now pro-vided the children with a new Club kit and from the reactions so far I think we made a good choice!

All our old kits have been donated to a worthwhile cause called Kit Aid which provides children in Africa with team kits. It’s been a win – win situation.

All of the children who attend our club are currently participating in league football. We still welcome new players and if you’d like to come along we play on the school playing fields on Mondays at 5pm. We will be moving to Duffyrn Comp at the start of November, same time Mon 5pm.

We have U7s (Year 2s) through to U10s (Year 5s) in our mini section. We also accommodate U6s and U5s but we do not take them to the astro turf with us due to safety precautions. The U6s and U5s training will re-commence in March when we return to the village for training. We’re cur-rently investigating options to install floodlights, so that we can stay on the village through the dark winter nights.

It’s been a positive start to the season and we look forward to developing the club throughout the next few months.

The baby signing craze is spreading across the country. What is it all about?

As well as being great fun to do, Baby signing has wonderful benefits including:

Reducing frustration (for baby and parent!)

    Encouraging Speech development

    Enhancing early vocabulary & understanding

Help you to understand your baby’s needs, thoughts and ideas

Building on what everyone does naturally with babies, baby signing introduces more simple gestures into everyday communication. Sing and sign classes combines the use of action songs, props, pictures and toys in musical activities designed to stimulate speech and language development. The focus of the class is to teach the parents the signs to help baby communicate before they can speak, whilst stimu-lating the babies by the music and fun elements of the class.

Classes are suitable for babies from 6 months to 2 years. Over 10 weeks we intro-duce 100 signs that are important in a baby’s world. The award winning program is set to music, some familiar and some specially written. Classes are fun and relaxed and numbers are strictly limited.

Both of my children have signed and I strongly believe it has enhanced their speech. It’s been an invaluable skill and great fun to do!

If you’d like to find out more, why not come along to a FREE TASTER SESSION in Porthcawl on the 25th November. Please contact me if you’d like to reserve a place.

For further information or to book please call 07583 087157or email

    [email protected]

Classes are held in Porthcawl, Neath and Swansea, for full details please see our website:
