adhesive tape. 3. A temperature probe enters the proximal esophagus. 4. When the body is received the hands are wrapped in surgical gauze bandage. 5. A central venous catheter enters through a puncture site in the right upper chest and is
secured by a surgical suture and adhesive tape. 6. Multiple recent needle puncture sites are within the left upper chest with several being
covered by a bandaid. 7. Intravenous catheters enter in the right and left antecubital fossa secured by adhesive tape. 8. An intravenous catheter enters on the dorsal surface of the left hand and is secured by
adhesive tape. 9. Multiple recent needle puncture sites involve the skin of the dorsal surface of the left hand
and several small zones of ecchymosis. 10. An arterial catheter enters on the anterior surface of the left wrist and is secured by
adhesive tape. 11. . A vertically oriented 2.0 inch surgical cut down site is in the left inguinal region and is
surrounded by a 3. 0 inch in diameter region of ecchymosis. 12. Hospital name bracelets are about the right and left wrists. 13. Multiple recent needle puncture sites are on the dorsal surface of the right hand as well as
in the right and left antecubital fossa.
EVIDENCE OF INJURY:
Description of the Gunshot Wound:
On the right parietal scalp 4.5 inches above and 2.0 inches posterior to the right external auditory meatus ( 64 Yi inches above the plantar surface of the right heel with the body in erect position and 6.0 inches to the right of the anterior midline) is an irregular gaping 0.9 x up to 0.75 inch stellate

atypical entrance gunshot wound which clockwise from the 3:00 to 9:00 position is bounded by an irregular margin of abrasion up to 0.2 inches in width. No gunpowder soot surrounds the depth of this wound.
Centered 1.0 inch directly below this atypical entrance gunshot wound is an oval 0.5 x 0.4 inch circular defect with slightly irregular and ragged margins, which are very mildly focally abraded. The central portion of this oval defect consists of a core of scalp, which is nearly completely avulsed except for a small connecting bridge of skin at the 12:00 position.
From this indeterminate range atypical entrance gunshot wound the wound tract courses from right to left, slightly upward ·and slight forward perforating the scalp which the scalp is severely and diffusely hemorrhagic. Large amounts of subgaleal hemorrhage also are about this entrance gunshot wound. The wound track enters the cranial vault through and oval and inwardly beveled 0.6 x 0.5 inch defect in the inferior portion of the right parietal bone. The wound track then perforates the dura mater, the parietal lobe of the right cerebral hemisphere, the falx cerebri and the parietal lobe of the left cerebral hemisphere resulting in a massively destructive approximately 1.0 inch.in diameter partially collapsed wound track which is filled with dark red clotted and unclotted blood, minute fragments of missile, multiple fragments of bones and is surrounded by an extensive rim of contusion necrosis. The wound track continues onward perforating the dura mater and the central portion of the left parietal bone exiting through a markedly upwardly beveled 0.75 x 0.5 inch defect. From just beneath the scalp over this point (65 inches above the plantar surface of the left heel with the body in the erect position and 1.0 inch from vertex are 5.0 inches directly above the left external auditory meatus) are recovered two markedly deformed fragments oflead bullet core. From along the wound track two other small fragments oflead bullet core are recovered. No bullet jacket is recovered nor can a bullet jacket be demonstrated on x-ray examination of the head prior to autopsy examination. These fragments are submitted as evidence. ·
As previously mentioned, the reflected scalp is severely and diffuse hemorrhagic. Small quantities of subgaleal hemorrhage are about the entrance and exit gunshot wounds.
The brain weighs 1600 grams. The brain exhibits severe diffuse subarachnoid hemorrhage over all surfaces but most prominent over the parietal lobes bilaterally. In addition, approximately 5 to 10 cc of subdural hemorrhage is about the entrance and exit gunshot wounds. Serial sectioning .shows the brain to be severely edematous with accompanying softening and flattening of the sulci and gyri. The inferior surface of the frontal, temporal, parietal and occipital lobes containing numerous remote cortical contusions which vary in size from 0.2 inches in diameter to 0.4 inches in diameter. A small foci of hemorrhage also are within the basal ganglia bilaterally. No other grossly identifiable diffuse or focal lesions other than those previously described are grossly identifiable within the cortex, subcortical white matter or deep parenchyma of either hemisphere.

The basal ganglia, thalami or Ammon's horn are otherwise unremarkable. The cerebral ventricles are collapsed and devoid of cerebral spinal fluid. The brainstem and cerebellum are moderately softened and edematous and are covered by a mild to focally severely subarachnoid hemorrhage.
The cranial vault is involved by complex series of comminuted fractures. Extending anteriorly from the entrance gunshot wound, coursing across the right parietal bone and the frontal bone is a curvilinear 6.5 inch fracture line which terminates at the left portion of the :frontal bone just above the supraorbital ridge. An 8.0 inch fracture line extends superiorly over the vertex of the skull, passing from the entrance gunshot wound defect to the juncture of the squamousal and lamboidal sutures.
The cribriform plate is severely and extensively disrupted.
OTHER EVIDENCE OF INJURY:
Head and Neck:
In the right temporal scalp, anterior of the gunshot wound defects are four irregular superficial light and dark red abrasions which range in size from 0.25 x 0.2 inches to 0.6 x 0.25 inches. In addition, a very faint 1. 0 inch in diameter contusion involves the skin of the right temple.
The right posterior auricular skin displays an extensive 3. 0 x 1. 5 inch region of contusion and is extensioned by the hemorrhage.
A 0.2 x 0.2 inch angular very superficial angular laceration with mildly contused margins involve the skin of the right upper forehead just below the hairline.
At the lateral margin of the right eyebrow are approximately 6 very superficial punctate less than 0.1 inch in diameter light red abrasions.
On the right temple, approximately 1.5 inches lateral to the lateral canthus of the right eye is a nearly horizontally oriented 0.5 inch by up to less than 0.1 inch laceration on the inferior margin of which is mildly focally abraded.
A 2.0 x 0.5 inch irregular discontinuous purple contusion involves the skin of the central portion of the right cheek.
On the posterolateral aspect of the neck is a wide spaced sparse series of punctate light red abrasions each less than 0.1 inch in diameter.

The left forehead contains a series of very superficial linear to irregular light and dark red abrasion that range in size from 0.2 inches in diameter to 1.5 by less than 0.1 inch.
The left upper lobe eyelid is extensively ecchymotic and distended. The right upper eyelid is mildly distended and ecchymotic.
The skin over the superior and posterior aspect of the left ear is mildly ecchymotic.
In the posterior occiput, in the midline is a vertically oriented 0.2 x 0.1 inch very superficial laceration.
Chest and Abdomen:
In the right upper chest, just above the lateral of the nipple is a 2. 0 inch in diameter purple to yellow-green contusion.
INTERNAL EXAMINATION:
Body Cavities:
Multiple major internal organs have been harvested for the purpose of transplantation. The heart, liver, kidneys with intervening aorta and a portion of the spleen are surgically absent. The right and left pleural cavities as well as the peritoneal cavities contain approximately 250cc of bloody serosanguineous fluid. The adipose layer of the anterior abdominal body wall at the level of the umbilicus is approximately 1. 0 inch thick.
Central Nervous System:
Refer to "Evidence of Injury".
Examination of the soft tissue of the neck, including strap muscles, thyroid gland and large vessels reveal no abnormalities. The hyoid bone, laryngeal cartilages and cervical spine are intact.
Cardiovascular System:
The heart has been removed for the purpose of transplantation.

OPINION:
CASE NO. 2000-1001418
This 20-year-old white male, Isaack Dawkins died of an indeterminate range penetrating gunshot wound of the head. The decedent was reportedly shot through the rear window of his pickup truck during a reported altercation with another driver. The gunshot wound entered in the right parietal scalp above and behind the ear and perforated the parietal regions of the cerebral hemisphere resulting in massive trauma to the brain. The bullet exited the skull but did not exit the skin and multiple fragments of markedly deformed lead bullet core were recovered. Examination also showed pseudostippling which resulted when multiple fragments of the rear window struck the head and neck. Also a second circular wound which most probably resulted from impaction by a circular antenna connector which was reportedly near the decedent's head. The manner of death is homicide.
