First, some great stats!!DASH is one of the best magnet art schools in the nation. In 2012, DASH is rated by US News & World Report as #1 high school in Florida; and in the entire US, ranked #2 magnet and #16 high school. Colleges want our students because they are so well prepared!! Many students will get admission offers and scholarship awards at multiple schools!!! Last year our seniors received over 12 million dollars in scholarships.

The Art and Design fields offer many great career options:1 job out of 111 is in the art & design industry. The visual arts industry employ more people than performing arts and sports industries combined. Jobs in design have increased 43% in the past ten years and the US Labor Bureau forecasts 1-2% growth in most design areas (2009-2017).Key Statistics:

Owners, Partners, and Principals of design firms earn a median salary of $100,000. Self-employed designers earn a mean salary of $65,000 per year. Art Directors earn a mean salary of $90,470 per year & saw a 10% rise Multi-Media Artists & Animators earn a mean salary of $62,810. & saw a 5.1% rise Architects earn a mean salary of $78,880 and were even Fashion designers earn a mean salary of $46,840 & saw a 7.4% rise Graphic designers earn a mean salary of $43,970 & saw a 5.7% rise. Commercial & Industrial designers earn a mean salary of $59,570 & saw a 17.3% rise!! Film and Video editors earn a mean salary of $57,890 & saw a 7.8% rise

AND WITH 8-9% UNEMPLOYMENT, THIS IS A GREAT TIME TO GO TO COLLEGE!

Overview of handouts and discussion with JuniorsI. Personal Cleanup (Email, MySpace/Facebook/Websites, etc):A. Make sure you have a decent email address and will keep it for the next 18 months.B. Don’t have embarrassing stuff on public websites.C. Keep me and others updated on contact information.

II. Testing:A. You should have already taken the SAT or the ACT in Feb/March.B. If not, take both tests in April/May/June.C. If you have taken one, take the best one again in Sept/Oct of Senior year.D. Check to see if colleges you are interested in require SAT II tests.

III. Essay and Resume:

A. By the end of Junior year, THIS JUNE, have at least one polished college resume ready.B. Start your essays. Pick top 3 schools and answer prompts. -- DASH provides parent volunteers throughout Fall & Spring to help with essay editing.

IV. Portfolio Development:A. Get a portfolio review with at least two art-college reps.B. Develop a concentration and/or theme for your senior year.C. Get as much feedback on your work as you can. D. Sign up for Young Arts and have a concentration ready now.E. Document work assiduously.

IV. Scholarship Research:A. Research which scholarships are a good match.B. Develop a chronological short list for senior year.

Most college application deadlines: January or FebruaryFlorida SUS colleges: FSU - November 1st / UF – November 15th

Admission decisions are made in February and MarchAward packages (merit & need) come in March & AprilMay 1st is universal response date for students to accept

This means they look at only Fall grades of Senior year initiallyTHUS: Your Junior year is HUGELY important to establish your

I. ACADEMIC PROFILE

-take Honors or AP courses-maintain a strong GPA-take/retake the SAT and/or ACT tests-read/read and write/write!

II. PORTFOLIO BASE-AP-2D portfolio work-other AP studio course work-develop conceptual focus and maturity-develop your individual VOICE.

I. Academics:A. GPA & Rank (Colleges range from most difficult to moderately difficult)

II. Portfolio:A. A solid body of work showing: - commitment -defined by quantity and ambition - talent and skill - potential for growth

I. Involvement & Leadership:A. Leadership roles at school, in clubs and service organizations B. Meaningful extracurricular activitiesC. Travel, pre-college programs, internships and jobs D. Life experience!

Yes, it costs money - up to $5,000 or more (most are in $3,500 range)

This year Knight Arts and the DelaCruz family are sponsoring 30 DASH sophomores and juniors to spend 3 weeks in NYC to study at the SVA pre-college program!
