More than a million expected at 2013 showT
he nation’s largest auto show is upon us.
The 105th edition of the Chicago Auto Show opens to the public at 10 a.m. Feb.
9 and closes at 8 p.m. Feb. 18 at Mc-Cormick Place.
Of the four major auto shows in the United States, the CAS annu-ally attracts more than one million visitors. The Los Angeles show is first, the New York show last and Detroit has the greatest number of worldwide new vehicle introduc-tions, but Chicago’s is the largest.
“It also is the show most geared toward the consumer, which is why Chicago is pretty well known as the consumer show,” said David Sloan, president of the Chicago Auto Trade Association and gen-eral manager of the CAS.
Sloan said the Chicago show, which costs CATA about $5 million each year to put on, is where po-tential customers come to kick the tires, get into vehicles on display and are serious about making a purchase.
Benefitting the most are the 400-plus new car dealers who are members of CATA, the sponsoring agency. “The dealers see a substan-tial uptick in potential customers to their dealerships and a big in-crease in sales,” Sloan noted. “We get reports that after the show ends the dealers are so busy they cannot keep up with customers coming into their dealerships.”
More than 1,000 vehicles from roughly 40 automakers will be on display during the 10 days of the event. Hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Feb. 9-17 and 10 a.m. to 8
p.m. Feb. 18.Daily tickets are $12 for adults,
$6 for seniors ages 62 and older, $6 for children ages 7 to 12. Children 6 years old or younger get in free when they are accompanied by a paying adult. Weekday discount coupons ($6 off regular adult admission) are available at area new-car dealers who are CATA members. Participating banks also mail the discount tickets to their account holders. School and group discounts are available.
Certain days should be kept in mind by potential patrons. Tues-day is women’s day. Women are ad-mitted for $6. Manufacturers will present programs oriented toward women on the purchase and lease of cars and maintenance. Wednes-day through Friday are food drive days. Patrons who bring three cans of food will receive a coupon for $6 admission. Food is donated to A Safe Haven Foundation.

The show is on one floor of Mc-Cormick Place South which covers 1.2 million square feet of exhibition space.
“What an advantage Chicago has over other shows,” Sloan said. “The show is on one gigantic floor and it is simply a matter of making your way through more than one million square feet of displays. We have by far the biggest automotive exhibition hall in the country and it really shows off the cars well. We do everything we can to put every last person we can in there.”
The show features multiple world and North American intro-ductions, a comprehensive range of domestic and imported passenger cars and trucks, sport utility ve-hicles and experimental or concept cars. One of the world introduc-tions is the 2014 Tundra pickup truck from Toyota.
“Why Chicago?” Toyota’s Midwest public relations manager Curt McAllister rhetorically asked. “It’s arguably the largest consumer auto show in the country and the CAS has a history of terrific truck reveals. We introduced the 2010 MY Tundra in Chicago back in 2009.”
“We will be making a big Ram announcement as well as bringing a new Chrysler and Mopar model to the show,” Chrysler Group publi-
cist Wendy Orthman said. For the Chicago show, CG will
introduce the 2013 Viper SRT, 2014 Fiat 500L, 2014 Jeep Grand Chero-kee and (new) Compass. “They will be exciting editions to the CAS floor,” she said.
Automotive media and the pub-lic can watch a live webcast of the unveiling of the first new product under the Ram commercial brand at the Chicago show. The unveil-ing is via live satellite feed from McCormick Place beginning Feb. 7. For information, visit http://host4-video.com/cas13/ram/.
Among the 75 vehicles in Ford’s display area will be the Atlas, which shows what the F-Series pickup trucks will look like in future years.
Ford also will display the new Transit Connect Wagon, redesigned Transit Connect city van and the Transit, a replacement commercial van for the E-Series.
According to Fred Ligouri of General Motors, on Chevrolet’s 64,500-square-foot-display will be the 2014 Corvette, 2014 Silverado, 2014 Impala, Hot Wheels Camaro, 1967 Hot Wheels Camaro concept, and the Malibu Turbo Performance Concept.

Black-tie event kicks off ’13 Chicago Auto ShowThe NORTHWEST HERALD
Since the annual Chicago Auto Show moves its opening day from a Friday to a Sat-urday this year, the First Look for Charity event also moves back a day.
In past years, the event was on a Thurs-day night as the auto show opened on a Friday morning.
This year, the event is Feb. 8 as the show opens on Feb 9. The auto show’s closing has been pushed back a day, too. In past years, it
closed on a Sunday. This year, it will close on a Monday (Feb. 18).
The 2013 edition of First Look for Charity begins at 7 p.m. and stays open on the show floor until 11 p.m.
It is a black-tie event to raise money for area charities. In 21 years, the event has raised more than $34 million for area chari-ties.
It is a special night at the nation’s largest auto show as one can stroll the more than 1 million square feet of show floor while eating
hors d’oeuvres and consuming beverages. Entertainment will be provided by Million
Dollar Quartet and American English. Two attendees will win the event’s grand
prizes, a 2013 Buick Encore and a 2013 Hyun-dai Santa Fe.
Eighteen Chicago area charities will benefit from the more than $2 million that is expected to be raised at this year’s event.
Tickets to the event are $250 each. Pur-chasers can direct ticket proceeds to benefit
one or more or all of the participating chari-ties.
“The Chicago Auto Show is uniformly regarded as the finest auto show in the coun-try, but the charitable cause demonstrates that this auto show is about more than just vehicles and accessories,” 2013 show chair-man Michael Ettleson said. “It also is about giving something to the charities of our com-munity.”

Mopar builds one-of-kind auto for showThe NORTHWEST HERALD
CHICAGO – Visitors to the Feb. 9-18 Chicago Auto Show will not want to miss Chrysler Group’s Mopar ’13 limited-edition vehicle.
“This vehicle is the perfect canvas for personalization and customization,” said Mopar’s president and chief executive officer Pietro Gorlier. “We could not wait to get our hands on it and give it the Mopar treatment.”
Mopar is Chrysler Group’s service, parts and customer-care brand.
The Mopar ’13 limited-edition vehicle follows the Mopar ’10 Dodge Challenger, Mopar ’11 Dodge Charger and Mopar ’12 Chrysler 300.
Features introduced by Mopar include:
Vehicle-information apps: Smart-phone vehicle-information appli-cations, a new channel of commu-nication with consumers.
Electronic owner manuals: Tradi-tional owner manuals in a DVD and brief user-guide format. Another first was registered when the complete vehicle information kits came out in Spanish.
Wi-Fi: The ability to make the vehicle a wireless hot spot.
Wireless charging: In-vehicle wireless charging for portable devices.
Electronic Vehicle Tracking System: Vehicle tracking device that sends owner a text when vehicle is driven too fast or too far based on pre-set parameters.
2011 Mopar Challenger Drag Pak: A 500-plus cubic-inch V10 drag race package car.
Brand-specific customer care tele-phone lines: Sunday service hours for customers.
WiTECH: Vehicle diagnosis and software updates leveraging off-the-shelf personal comput-ers and a dedicated wireless tool network.

A Dodge Dart outfitted by Mopar also will be at the Chicago Auto Show.
Eventually, 500 of these Mopar Darts will be outfitted with select parts and accessories and built at Chrysler’s as-sembly plant in Belvidere.
Performance upgrades include lowered sport suspension, revised steer-ing calibration, sport-tuned exhaust, ground-effects kit and premium brake kit with slotted rotors. Trim will in-clude a custom leather Mopar driver’s seat. There also will be the industry’s first in-car wireless charging for smart-phones.

RAV4 to be given away at Chicago Auto Show

CHICAGO – The 30 deal-ers who comprise the Chi-cago area Toyota dealers are offering area residents the opportunity to win a 2013 Toyota RAV4 at the Feb. 9-18 Chicago Auto Show at Mc-Cormick Place.
To enter the “Win an All-New 2013 Toyota RAV4 at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show” contest, visit sites.google.com/site/toyotara-v4chicago and click on the promotional image and complete the official online entry form.
Residents also can enter by texting the word “RAV4” to 27205. Entrants will receive a text message back from the sponsor providing them a link to the mobile registration page to fill out an entry form.
A third way to enter includes snap-tag entries at participating Toyota dealer-ships or at the auto show.
To compete in the sweep-stakes via snap-tag entry, contestants must first locate the snap-tag image and obtain the snap-tag short code.
The snap-tag image and snap-tag short code can be found in various sweep-stakes advertisements distributed at participating Toyota dealerships and at the Chicago Auto Show.
The entry can be submit-ted by texting the photo as an attachment to the short code provided on the advertisement or by email to [email protected].

CHICAGO – Officials with Chrysler Group project that 1.2 million people will attend the Feb. 9-18 Chicago Auto Show at McCormick Place.
That is why they put lots of energy into the company’s test tracks.
One of the tracks is built for Jeep, one for the Ram and another for other vehicles under the Chrysler umbrella, which includes Dodge, Fiat and, of course, the Chrysler cars.
At past shows, the lines for Camp Jeep have been long as consumers wait to get behind the wheel of a Wrangler, Compass, Patriot or Grand Cherokee.
For insurance and safety purposes, professional driv-ers hired by Chrysler ride along in the passenger seat.
The track is comprised of several obstacles which simulate some of the testing that Jeep vehicles endure including rugged terrain, traversing fallen logs mea-suring 15 inches in diameter, and a 30-degree wedge to demonstrate the vehicle’s unchallenged, according to company publicists, articula-tion.
Toward the end of the track is a hill climb enabling passengers to experience the traction capabilities while climbing an 18-foot high, 35-degree artificial mountain.
This is the ninth time a Camp Jeep track has been featured at the Chicago show.

Jeep display include a 24-foot climbing wall and course for children with kid-size Jeeps, live action cameras and games plus product spe-cialists on hand to answer questions.
The other track is less challenging and it is for the Chrysler 200 and 300 and Town & Country, Dodge Charger, Challenger and Dart and the Fiat 500 Abarth and Sport.
Show visitors can choose the vehicle of choice and ride with, again, a professional driver in the front passenger seat.
The ride does offer chal-lenging obstacles and sla-loms to demonstrate vehicle ride, handling, acceleration, braking, inside comfort, safety and fuel economy.

Additional activities for show-goers will be a make-your-own-buttons station, Gran Turismo race simulators featuring the 2014 Corvette, MyLink in-car demos, Manchester United one-on-one soccer games that allow consumers to play with friends and post to Facebook plus Hot Wheels activity.
“This is where you can participate in the world’s longest jump of a Hot Wheels die-cast miniature vehicle. We will have the Hot Wheels miniatures of the production Hot Wheels Camaro available to jump,” Ligouri said.
Cadillac will showcase the 2014 ELR, 2013 ATS, CTS Coupe, CTS-V, XTS, SRX, Escalade and Escalade ESV on its allotted space of 18,000 square feet. Showgoers can test drive the ATS, XTS and SRX all days and nights of the show but with certain restrictions. Drivers must produce a valid driver’s license and be at least 18 years old, passengers must be at least 8 years old, adults must provide follow-up information about themselves, drivers and passengers must complete and sign a waiver of liability and pass a Breathalyzer test. The free drives are on streets surrounding McCormick Place.
Buick will display on 16,500 square feet of showroom floor the Verano, Verano Turbo, Regal, Regal GS, Lacrosse, Encore and En-clave. Additional activities include live cook-ing demonstrations by a celebrity chef on the two weekends of the show.
People at the show also have the opportu-nity to see numerous accessories and auto-related exhibits, competition vehicles and project, antique and collector cars. Special appearances and events take place every day.
Public parking adjacent to McCormick Place costs $21 at Lots A and C and $14 at Lot B. If parked 16 hours or longer at Lot A (build-ing attached by walk ramps to McCormick Place), the cost goes up to $30. After 6 p.m. on show days, the price drops by $10 at all three lots.
There is shuttle bus service from more distant parking lots.
For the two weekends of the show, shuttle service is provided to and from the Millen-nium Park and East Monroe underground ga-rages. Shuttles stop in 10-15 minute intervals near Columbus/Upper and Lower Randolph and at Gate 3 at McCormick Place.

Scooter rentals are $50 a day and wheel-chair rentals are $20 a day. Scootaround is located at Gate 4 of McCormick Place (west end of the Grand Concourse). You are encour-aged to reserve in advance.
A Chicago ordinance that took effect in 2006 bans smoking in the entirety of McCormick Place and all other public buildings in the city. Smokers can look for designated areas at least 15 feet away from the building. Ask red-coated ushers for directions.

“Exit surveys from our past shows as well as from 10 others around the country, tell us that the Chicago show is, by far, the best,” Sloan said. “The people who conduct the sur-veys told us that Chicago is the model of how an auto show should be run. If all the other shows did the same as we do here, they would
be that much more successful.”The 2013 Los Angeles show was in late-
November and early December, Detroit’s in January and New York’s will be in the latter days of March and the early days of April.
Sloan said February is an ideal month to hold the show. “Spring is just around the corner and people are getting anxious to get out and about. Plus, I think this year people simply are ready to buy a new vehicle. They could be getting tired of the old one.
“Statistics indicate that the average age of cars on the road today is 10 or even 11 years. If a car is that old, there has to be a pent-up demand for something new.
Fuel prices are going up and with an 11-year-old car in the garage that is not very fuel efficient, you might want to start looking at a vehicle that is not only more fuel-efficient, but
safer and better to drive as well. The technol-ogy in vehicles built today is so tremendous that it simply outclasses anything built 10 or 11 years ago.”
First staged in 1901, the CAS has been pro-duced more times than any other auto show in North America. The show was interrupted by World War II and its immediate aftermath. In 1950, the show resumed.
Due to its Midwestern farm and tradesman heritage, the Chicago show emphasized the pickup truck and sport utility market.
CATA, the nation’s oldest and largest metropolitan dealer organization, was founded in the early-1900s and has produced the show since 1935.
Besides the 400 franchised new-car dealers there are an additional 150 allied members. The group’s dealer members employ approxi-
mately 19,000 people in the metropolitan area.Hosted by CATA, the annual First Look for
Charity black-tie preview raises $2 million annually for 18 area charities, making it one of the city’s largest single-day fundraising events.
This year, the event is 7 to 11 p.m. Feb. 8. It is a black-tie, $250 per ticket event that annu-ally kicks off the auto show before the public pays to enter the next day. Guests are treated to free champagne, wine, soft drinks, bottled water, hors d’oeuvres and desserts. A Buick Encore and a Hyundai Santa Fe will be raffled off during the event.
Following on the heels of the CAS is the Feb. 23-March 3 Greater Milwaukee Auto Show at the downtown Delta Center. Daily hours and ticket prices vary.

Cadillac polishes award-winning ATS for showThe NORTHWEST HERALD
A jury of 49 automotive media members considered every new car released in the past year and se-lected Cadillac’s ATS as the winner. The award was announced at the January auto show in Detroit.
The ATS will be highlighted at the Cadillac booth at the Feb. 9-18 Chicago Auto Show at McCormick Place South.
“This is a very meaningful honor for the entire Cadillac team, especially the men and women who build the ATS in Lansing, Michi-gan, and our dedicated and talented designers and engineers,” said Bob Ferguson, General Motors vice president, global Cadillac. “A car like ATS is the result of incredible commitment and focus. That’s the only method for creating a great performing luxury car.”
The new ATS is the lightest car in its class with a unique architec-ture designed for nimble driving performance, Ferguson noted.
The North American Car of the Year award is the latest of accolades for the ATS, which was named Car of the Year by Esquire magazine and the Motor Press Guild.
A compact sport sedan, the ATS is offered in rear- and all-wheel drive versions, with a choice of four- and six-cylinder engines. It recently received a five-star overall crash test rating in the new car assessment program run by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Offerings are 2-liter turbo and 2.5-liter four-cylinders and a 3.6-liter V6. The two 3.6-liters (rear and all-wheel-drive models) and one 2.5-liter (RWD) are mated to six-speed
automatic transmissions. There is the choice of a six-speed manual or automatic transmission with the turbo four-cylinder 2-liters.
Cadillac engineers claim the ATS is the lightest sport sedan on the market which contributes to the sprint from 0 to 60 mph in an unofficial 6.7 seconds for the four-
cylinder. The V6 has been tested by automotive media in 5.7 seconds. These times are typical of compact, five-passenger, four-door sport sedans including the BMW 3-Series, Audi A4, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Infiniti G.
Prices range from $33,095 for a 2013 base model to $44,895 for the
premium edition. These prices compare with Cadillac’s mid-sized CTS which is priced from $39,000 to almost $65,000 for a sedan (CTS also is a coupe and wagon).
The ATS comes with a host of standard amenities including leather trim, power and heated exterior mirrors, four power
windows (express up and down in front), power and heated front seats, keyless entry and push-button start, eight airbags, satellite radio, automatic headlamps, aluminum wheels for performance 17-inch tires and more.
