The record December cheese production was up 17 per cent from November and 18 per cent from the month a year earlier. Despite the one-month gain, cheese output for all of 1973 was up only 1 per cent from 1972. Butter production was down 16 per cent from 1972.

Total U.S. milk production last year dropped about 3 per cent from 1972. President Nixon last year opened the import door to more nonfat dry milk, butter and other products. And on Jan. 2 he added another 100 million pounds of cheese to the import quota which could be imported during the first three months of 1974.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Agriculture Department has bought more than 40 million pounds of frozen ground beef for donation to school lunch programs at a cost of S38.4 mil­lion since the purchase cam­paign began last fall.

The purchases, which have occurred weekly, were under­taken partly at the urging of cattle producers to help boost market prices for live animals.

Officials have indicated, how­ever, that regular beef pur­chases for the 1973-74 school term soon may end. Cattle prices have climbed from a low mark of around $37 per hun­dredweight last fall to about 48 for choice steers at Omaha.

Last August cattle reached record peaks of about $56 per hundredweight before beginning a slump.

EXPEDITION SARANAC LAKE. N.Y. (AP)

— Dr. Dwight Milne, dean of North Country Community Col­lege here, will direct an arch-eological expedition to Guate­mala to restore a Myan pyra­mid.

His appointment was an­nounced by Educational Ex­peditions International of Bel­mont, Mass.

The major objective will be to clear, clean and repair the temple, a pre-classic Myan ar­chitecture and a permanent na­tional monument for Guate­mala.
