fies the minimum liability coverage

($20,000 in this case) for any one

person, any one accident. The “40”

represents the maximum payout for

all persons in any one accident. The

final number, “15” deals with liability

limitsforpropertydamage.InIllinois,

theamountis$15,000.

AccordingtofiguresfromR.L.Polk

& Co.’s annual vehicle population

report, the median age of passenger

carsinoperationintheUnitedStates

increasedto9.4years in2008,break-

ingtheprevioustwo-yearrecordhigh

of 9.2 years. By comparison, in 1999,

themedianageofapassengercarwas

8.3years.

Lincoln College of Technology is

Technician program, where students

can earn either a diploma or an As-

sociatesdegree.ToqualifyfortheAs-

additionalgeneraleducationclasses.”

The Automotive Technology pro-

gramisheadedbyanAutomotiveSer-

viceExcellence(ASE)mastercertified

technicianprovidinghands-onexperi-

encewith14equippedbays.Alsopart

of the program is an auto tech web

lab with 30 computers familiarizing

studentswiththetechnologyusedin

therepairindustry.

What is ASE?

AutomotiveServiceExcellencecer-

tificationisameasuringstickhelping

separate those with a higher level of

experience from those just entering

the automotive tech field. nearly

400,000 professionals are ASE certi-

fied. The non-profit institute, started

in 1972, was established to improve

the quality of vehicle repair through

voluntarytesting.

Tony molla is not only the vice

president of Communications at ASE

based in virginia, but also a certified

ASEtechnicianhimself.

“To qualify for certification, an in-

dividualmusthaveat leasttwoyears

of hands-on work experience in the

automotive sector and pass at least

one ASE certified exam,” molla said.

“It’s important for students to keep

inmindthattwoyearsofautomotive

technician schooling may qualify for

oneyearofworkexperience.”

Written certification exams are

given twice a year (may and novem-

ber)atmorethan750locationsnation-

wide—including10paper-and-pencil

testcentersintheChicagoarea.There

are more than 50 different tests spe-

cializingin14automotivedisciplines.

Certificationisgoodforfiveyears.“for

those starting out in the automotive

repairworld,ASEcertificationandtest-

ingcanbetailoredtomeetyourcareer

goal,”mollaadded.

Written questions shy away from

automotive theory, instead focusing

on actual real-world situations in the

service bay. “Test questions present

scenarios where the individual has to

analyze technical information given

andmakeacorrectdiagnosis.It’ssimilar

tothestyleofquestionsaskedofpilots

ontheirwrittenexams,”addedmolla.

The Need For Auto Repair Specialists Is Growing Giventheeconomy’scurrentslowstateofgrowth,moreindividualsandfamiliesare keeping their cars, minivans and sport utilities longer, and may think twicebeforepurchasinganewone.

composedofagoopyconcoc-

tion of animal and vegetable

fats along with petroleum that often

timesfellshortintheirduties.Refined

mineral-based motor oils withstood

the heat while lubricating moving

parts.

How do motor oils help engines

withstand high temperatures?

motoroilsreduceheatbuildupby

providing a barrier between moving

parts,anddispersingheatawayfrom

thesemovingparts.Conventional,or

base petroleum/mineral motor oils

contain additives (about 18 percent

additiveswith82percentbasestock)

assisting in heat absorption and dirt

suspension. Over time, the additives

breakdownandtheirabilityto lubri-

How does synthetic oil differ from

conventional oil?

Thom Smith, technical director for

Branded Products at valvoline based

in Lexington, Kentucky, has a good

workingknowledgeofsyntheticsand

explains the benefits. “Synthetic oils

have gone through more chemical

processing,rearrangingandbreaking

down or building up molecules to

provide ideal lubricating properties,”

Smithsaid.“It’smorethanjustgetting

ridofthebadstuff;it’screatingentirely

newmolecules.”Syntheticmotoroils

beganshowinguponstoreshelvesin

thelate1960sandearly1970s.

Synthetics have their advantages,

especiallyhereinChicago’sinsnowy,

cold January. “Synthetic oils have

better flow properties at lower tem-

peratures.Thismakesiteasiertopump

oil throughtheentireengine,”Smith

said.“Syntheticoilisoxidativelymore

stable,meaningitwillnotchemically

break down as easy as conventional

motoroil.”

Anewsegmentformotoroilsdevel-

opedinthelasttwodecadesspecial-

izes in cars with odometer readings

beyond 75,000. “Older vehicles have

ahigherconsumptionrateofoilthan

new models,” Smith said. “Seals can

shrinkandbecomebrittleastheyage.

Thisallowsoiltogetbythesealsand

endupeitheronthegaragefloor,or

finding its way onto hot parts of the

engine, creating smoke or a burning

smell.”
