And as October gives way to November, our Chrysanthemum Festival is more beautiful than ever as it reaches peak bloom and fills our Conservatory with fall’s rich hues.

As the leaves begin to turn and the weather becomes cooler, our Main Fountain Garden continues to amaze throughout October. Stroll the beautiful linden tree allées, meander through the inviting and mysterious Grotto, contemplate the beauty of water dancing to new heights, and soak up more of the splendor.

Historic PumphouseExplore our new Historic Pump Room & Gallery Exhibit located on the west side of the Main Fountain Garden. This display highlights the 18 original pumps and mechanical systems that powered the fountains from 1931 to 2014.

Fireworks & Fountains Exhibit On View Through October 22

Visit the Music Room for our seasonal exhibit, Water & Wonder: The Spectacular Main Fountain Garden Shows, extended until October 22. Through gorgeous imagery, artifacts from our Archives, and film footage, delve into the history, choreography, and new technologies used in our fountain performances, including our Fireworks & Fountains Shows.

We begin more than a year in advance to grow thousands of chrysanthemums meticulously nurtured and trained into giant orbs, spirals, columns, pagodas, and other unique forms. In late October, the Thousand Bloom Mum takes center stage showcasing our talented team of horticulturists’ skill in growing one chrysanthemum plant covered in more than 1,500 perfect blooms. At Family Story Time, young guests can enjoy nature-based stories in our Lookout Loft Treehouse amid the beauty of the surrounding forest. Storytelling, songs, and puppets encourage children to discover the joys of nature, language, and literature. Story time is designed for children ages 3–5.

Meadow Garden Wildflower Walks start at the Peirce-du Pont House porch before heading to our fully accessible Meadow boardwalk introducing you to our beautiful Meadow Garden. From there, you may continue with our wildflower experts on our meadow trails discovering what’s in bloom.

During our Forest and Woodland Management Walk, spend an hour walking with our Land Steward and discover how Longwood manages its woodlands. Learn more about our stewardship strategies including invasive species management and native forest plant community restoration.

Birds of Longwood Walks, Beginner Bird Hikes, American Birding Association Monthly Bird Hikes, and Meadow Birding Hikes require outdoor clothing and shoes/boots. Binoculars are recommended.

Gardener’s Guide to Fall

(2) Autumn is a time when growth slows outdoors, but it is the perfect time for garden enthusiasts to begin preparation for winter’s harsh months and spring’s anticipated rejuvenation. As the weather cools, gardeners can uproot and rearrange summer blooming perennials, plan their gardens for spring, plant deciduous trees and shrubs, and after the first frost in mid-October, plant tulips, daffodils, ornamental onions, fritillaries, and crocuses for early spring flowers. Protect your annuals from the freezing temperatures of winter and bring canna roots, dahlia tubers, gladiolus bulbs, and elephant's-ear-plants inside to a cool garage or root cellar. Before the first frost, find a sunny spot for your begonias, tropical plants, and potted geraniums inside your home.

Fall is for the Birds

(1) Longwood Gardens manages its hundreds of acres of Natural Lands to support various woodland, meadow, and wetland habitats, the native plant communities that form them, and the native North American bird species that depend upon them throughout the year. All birds require places to rest and feed during migration, build their nests, and feed their young. Our lands are important locally, regionally, nationally, and even internationally, as many birds use a variety of habitats throughout their lives. To help our guests understand the importance of these habitats, and to see these beautiful bird species, we offer a variety of bird walks and hikes throughout the year, so that guests may see our avian residents and visitors first-hand. During these walks, a guide points out bird species as well as field markers, behaviors, and bird calls to help guests learn identification methods. Early October through late November sees the appearance of migrating raptors and sparrows across the area, as well as ducks and warblers arriving to spend the winter. Anywhere at Longwood is good for seeing birds, but the best places are where native plants are growing in large communities—primarily in our Meadow Garden. Walks follow the paths along the edge of the Meadow Garden highlighting areas such as the Hourglass Lake, the Earth Bridge, and the Hawk Point Pavilion, all of which provide a large view of the sky—perfect for birding. Flying above, guests can spot Red-tailed Hawks, American Kestrels, Song Sparrows, Cedar Waxwings, Palm Warblers, and more. With a keen eye, rare Golden Eagles, Fox Sparrow, and Eastern Meadowlarks have been observed. All levels of birding are encouraged with beginner hikes teaching binocular usage tips to

Preserving our Chrysanthemums

(3) Our chrysanthemum collection is prized not only for its ability to provide beautiful displays throughout the fall season, but also for its contribution to horticulture beyond our Gardens. Chrysanthemums, native to China and Japan, have become increasingly difficult to import due to their susceptibility to pests and plant disease. In order to preserve and keep our chrysanthemum collection (which includes rare cultivars) disease free,our research department utilizes tissue culture. Tissue culture is a growing technique conducted in a sterile environment with the goal of plant cloning and disease elimination. To begin the tissue culture process, our staff removes the apical meristem, a group of actively dividing cells, from a chrysanthemum shoot and suspends it in a tube filled with a gelatin mixture of salts, sugar, and plant hormones that serves as an optimized plant-growing material. Growing chrysanthemums from tissue culture allows our staff to grow hundreds of plants in tubes very quickly, reducing the need for growing space. A chrysanthemum that begins in tissue culture will grow for two months in the lab before being transferred to our production facility to be used in our Chrysanthemum Festival pagodas, cascades, spirals, orbs, and our specialty hundred and thousand bloom chrysanthemums. To ensure the continuation of our collection, our research staff maintains more than 1,500 test tubes holding virus-free mum stock.

Main Fountain Garden Gets Ready for Winter

(4) Just like our other outdoor gardens, our Main Fountain Garden will be getting ready for winter, too. After a successful inaugural season of wowing guests with our fountain performances, our facilities staff will begin in November preparing the garden for the harsh winter temperatures. Tasks include removing and inspecting the robotic fountain nozzles, and covering or capping other nozzles to protect them from the elements. In addition, the stonework will be inspected,

cleaned as needed, and in some instances, covered. Behind the scenes, water storage tanks will be cleaned, and all of the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems will be checked and undergo routine maintenance. Our fountain choreographers will also be hard at work on the Syncronorm computer system designing new shows for next season. Guests can continue to enjoy the Main Fountain Garden throughout the year, as the garden’s pathways, Grotto, and Historic Pump Room & Gallery will be available.

Leaf-peepers Guide to Fall Color

(5) Fall is a magical time at Longwood as our landscape transforms into the striking red, orange, and yellow hues of the season. You can see the transformation all around our Gardens, but a few spots make for a perfect fall foliage viewing experience. Along Flower Garden Drive see the rusty oranges of bald-cypress (Taxodium distichum), deciduous conifers that shed their needles. Nearby, appreciate the red and deep maroons of flowering dogwoods (Cornus florida) in the Dogwood Plaza near the Open Air Theatre. Wander over to the clearing by the Canopy Cathedral Treehouse and let your eyes gaze upon maroon sourwood (Oxydendrum arboreum) and the gorgeous yellows and oranges of pignut hickories (Carya glabra). The true star of fall is our Meadow Garden, which bursts with the colors of the season in every direction you turn. More yellow and orange pignut hickories line the northern edge of the Meadow Garden as well as near the Hourglass Lake. Walk to our Webb Farmhouse and view a majestic sugar maple tree (Acer saccharum) covered in oranges and reds that is sure to impress. The best time for viewing all these beautiful colors is anticipated to be the third week of October, but temperature and rain fall can affect peak foliage viewing time.

From fanciful topiary to elegantly adorned trees, there is only one way to describe our French-inspired holiday display: c’est magnifique! More than 50 trees in classic Christmas tones of silver, gold, white, and red boast elegant laurel garlands and sparkling crystal ornaments reminiscent of the splendor of Versailles. Outdoors, snuggle with family and friends at one of our firepits, marvel as colorful fountains dance to holiday music, and stroll amidst a wonderland of a half-million lights. Strolling carolers and daily holiday sing-alongs fill the Gardens with a festive air.

ParkingLongwood offers free parking and transportation is provided between remote parking and the Gardens.

For Your ConvenienceLongwood Gardens covers many acres. There are no shuttles within the Gardens. We’re happy to offer the following:

– Non-motorized wheelchairs, electric scooters, and children’s strollers are available on a first- come basis for a fee. Supply limited, reservations not accepted.

– Scooters are not available during rainy, snowy, or freezing weather.
