WELCOME TO THE TRON AUTUMN SEASONIt’s an amazing line up this season, the best yet in my view, with a range of excitingproductions from a number of leading theatre companies. The highlight for me has tobe our production of Ulysses, James Joyces’ seminal novel adapted for the stage byDermot Bolger. This will be the first ever theatre version staged in the UK or Ireland, with an ensemble company of eight Irish and Scots actors. In addition to theproduction’s run at the Tron, we are taking it to the Belfast Festival, Cork and toDublin, where the book is famously set. It’s a wonderful script and the production willbe both accessible and audacious in equal measure ... a genuine ‘must see’.

In the Main House, I am delighted that we are presenting a premiere production fromthe National Theatre of Scotland, My Shrinking Life, an autobiographical piece by thebrilliant Alison Peebles. Tron favourites Random Accomplice return with The IncredibleAdventures of See Thru Sam; and in a co-production with Theatre Jezebel, Glasgay!will present a stage version of the cult film Harold and Maude. We also welcome anexciting new company from the Borders, Firebrand with Rona Munro’s powerful playIron featuring Blythe Duff in the central role; and the internationally celebrated newwriting company Paines Plough with their heart-rending double bill London.

In the Changing House, we’ve got work for young people from leading Scottishtheatre-makers Catherine Wheels, whose The Ballad of Pondlife McGurk, aboutstaying true to your friends, is aimed at a 9yrs+ audience; new writing from Sylvia Dow,who describes herself as ‘not a young writer’ in Greyscale/ Stellar Quines’ ABeginning, A Middle and An End; and Magnetic North’s latest production Sex & Godby Linda McLean, amongst other things.

The renowned Johnny McKnight takes on the task of presenting and starring in ourannual panto, which this year is Aganeza Scrooge, an all-female take on CharlesDickens’ classic book A Christmas Carol. And our very young patrons will be calledupon to help keep the countdown to Christmas clock ticking in Tron Participation’slovely new show Christmas Time.

‘[Ulysses is] the book to which we are all indebted, and from which none of uscan escape.’T.S. ELIOT

‘…a brilliant re-imagining of Joyce’s world in theatrical terms, at once faithful to the original and yet in itself a fresh and vigorous work of art…’FINTAN O’TOOLE, THE IRISH TIMES

I am a fool perhaps. Boylan gets the plums and I the plum stones. My youth. Never again. Gibraltar. Evenings like this looking out over thesea, she told me, but clear, no clouds. Said she always thought she’d marrya lord or a gentleman with a private yacht. Why me?

While his wife Molly waits in bed for the infamous Blazes Boylan, LeopoldBloom is in Dublin conversing in pubs, graveyards, press rooms, brothels... and then home.

Adapted for stage by author and Dublin chronicler Dermot Bolger, and featuringa cast of eight Irish and Scottish performers, Ulysses is bawdy, hilarious andaffecting, and celebrates Joyce’s genius for depicting life in all its profundity.

As I struggle inelegantly on my crutches, toddlers, who have just discovered the wobbly freedom oftheir own two feet, whizz past me. People amble, stride, jog and just…walk. It is a gift they don’tknow they have, and one I never considered untilI began to lose it.

Alison Peebles is a leading Scottish actor whoonce gave an acclaimed performance as LadyMacbeth and in many others memorable roles. But that’s not the point.

Alison Peebles has primary progressive MS whichwas first diagnosed 12 years ago, after a series offalls as a creeping numbness spread throughouther body. But maybe that’s not the point either. The point is that she is a vulnerable as all of us.

Thomas, Katie and Hannah are beautiful youngperformers, but it’s not important that they havehealthy, flexible, reliable bodies. What’s importantis that their minds and their emotions can be asunpredictable as Alison’s body.

My Shrinking Life is a confrontation betweenfundamental concepts in human life, betweenweakness and vanity, between choice and coercion, between movement and stasis, beginnings andends. Celebratory, irreverent and, at times, surreal, My Shrinking Life examines theemotional and physical journey we are all on as vulnerable, fragile people, diagnosed or not.

EILEEN COOPEREileen Cooper has exhibited extensively throughoutthe world since training at Goldsmith’s College andThe Royal Academy of Art, London. Living andworking in London, she is currently a RoyalAcademician and Head of the PrintmakingDepartment at the Royal Academy Schools. Herimages contain an imaginative narrative that relatesto archetypal themes with a distinct spiritual content. These narratives are simultaneously semi-autobiographical and universal as they speak of thespiritual, emotional or creative challenges or questionswe all experience. The playful, relaxed atmosphereof the images is constructed by the use ofundulating markings and a confident use of colour.

ACCESSIBLE PERFORMANCES

We are doing all we can to reduce our environmental impact. We recycle wherever we can, all our electricity comes fromrenewable sources and we’ve significantly reduced our CO2 impact.

But you can help too. It’s the small changes that matter the most and everybody can do their bit to lend a hand. Why not:

Pop your old tickets and info we send you in your recycling bin?Grab a bus instead of the car keys?Or, if the typical West coast weather lets up, why not enjoy a wee walk to the theatre before your show?Sign up to our e-list to get all our juiciest bits by email rather than post?

If you have any suggestions of your own, give us an email on [email protected], if you want to check out our policy in full, have a look here: http://www.tron.co.uk/about/tron_environmental_policy/
