Finding the Sweet Spots of New York

Master pastry chef Roy Fares is back in the USA. This time it’s the East Coast, New York to be exact, that is being

Into the bargain, the book is a guide to the sweet side of New York. Roy visits both well and lesser-known patisseries where he is treated to an abundance of pies, cheesecakes, doughnuts, ice cream (including corn-flake flavour!), milkshakes, soda floats and other essentials.

So join Roy on his sugary adventure among his best ”Sweet Spots of New York” and at home in your own kitchen!

Clean Cookingno gluten, no dairy, no sugar

Cooking without gluten, dairy products and white sugar is not only easy, the results are also delicious. With benefits like feeling healthier, slimmer and more energetic, clean cooking is a growing trend, even among people who aren’t sensitive or allergic to gluten, dairy products and white sugar.

The Manure Book – for a thriving garden

Manure might be dirty, disgusting and smelly, but it’s the topic of the most exciting gardening book of the year. Because it’s manure that maxi-mises your garden, whatever you grow in it. And, like people, plants need nutrients in order to grow, flower and bear fruit, nutrients that can be found in offal, the sea, fire, rocks, the toilet, rubbish and, of course, dung heaps.

The author thoroughly explores every aspect of the theme, from chemi-stry and biology to history and philosophy and the book answers all your ”whats”, ”whens” and ”hows” and gives you concrete advice, generous tips and, above all, masses of inspiration. It lifts the lid on old and reliable fertilisation methods and opens the doors to new resource-efficient and environmentally-smart cultivation techniques.

The Manure Book has an unusual theme, a tone that stands out in a crowd and doesn’t look like a typical gardening book but, most impor-tantly, it’s a book that everyone interested in gardening needs and it’s probably the first comprehensive book about manure!

Behind the book is a creative trio with a passion for cultivation – a copywriter, an art director and a fashion photographer. The author Tina Råman is a writer and amateur cultivator with both feet in the earth, one foot in the flowerbed and the other in the stable’s dung heap.

Winter Birds

During the colder months of the year we can get a better look at birds when they come into our gardens looking for food. By observing them through the kitchen window or from our favourite armchair by the fire we can get to know them, their behaviour and their special characteristics.

This book is about the winter birds that gather around the bird table – from the cheeky blue tits and chattering tree sparrows to the messy nut-hatches and the more restrained greenfinches – only to disappear at the first sight of a sparrowhawk.

Winter Birds includes beautifully illustrated watercolour pictures and personally written texts about forty common species. Not only does Win-ter Birds help you to identify the birds, it is also a book of personal ob-servations, cultural history and interesting facts.

Lars Jonson is an artist, author and ornithologist. His field handbook Birds of Europe (1992) has been a huge success both in Sweden and overseas and his paintings are regularly exhibited in Europe and the USA.

Understanding Your Cat

When did wild cats become domesticated? Where are the right spots for petting your cat? How can you prevent your cat from clawing your fur-niture?

This book answers these questions and many more besides. Unlike other books about feline behaviour, this one is based on science. Al-though amazing research into cats has been done in recent years, the exciting results have only reached outside the narrow walls of universities in the form of newspaper articles.

In this book, researcher and editor-in-chief deciphers the most intere s-ting results from a popular point of view. In spite of spending more than 30 years with cats, the author still had his aha moments and learned more about cats’ behaviour while writing every single chapter.

The chapters all end with a ”Researcher’s tips” section where concrete tips are presented point by point. We guarantee that after reading it, you will be even more fascinated by cats and their behaviour.

Bo Söderström is a senior lecturer in conservation biology and works as editor-in-chief at The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm. He has been fascinated by cats since an early age and has three cats of his own.

Beekeeping

Bees are a man’s best friend. These busy insects work hard to pollinate our gardens and do an important job that we couldn’t do without. But bees are finding it increasingly difficult in the world that they share with us. The question is, what can we do to help them?

We can invite them into our gardens. There are many species of bees and all of them feed on nectar, which we can provide them with by plant-ing the right kind of flowers. Or why not do your whole neighbourhood a favour and become a beekeeper. Not only is it a great hobby, you’ll also be rewarded with a plentiful supply of honey that you can use in tea as well as for cooking, baking and perhaps even lip salve and skin cream.

In Beekeeping, Joachim Petterson describes a year in the life of bee-keeping, how to take care of the bees and the social structure of a beehive. Seven years ago he was a complete beginner in beekeeping but strong family traditions aroused his interest and he put up his first hives in the garden of his house in a suburb of Stockholm. He is now an experienced beekeeper who knows how to set up and maintain a colony of happy, healthy bees.

Joachim Petterson is a devoted recreational beekeeper with six hives in his garden. He lives in Bromma, Stockholm, with his family and is an art director, book designer and teacher at Beckmans College of De-sign, Grafiska institutet and Stockholm University.

Year-Round Cultivation – harvesting vegetables and herbs

throughout the year

Thanks to climate change, autumns are longer and warmer and the best thing you can do for the environment is to make use of these rises in tem-perature to grow your own produce. Lena Israelsson has developed the art of extending the outdoor growing season from four to eight months and in the winter she grows leaf vegetables and herbs indoors. With this book, Lena hopes to inspire readers to follow suit.

The choice of plants forms the basis of year-round cultivation. This book differentiates between cold weather plants, such as spinach, radishes, lettuce and carrots, that are suitable for spring and autumn cul-tivation, and warm weather plants, like tomatoes, chilli and corn, that thrive in the heat.

To help readers select the right plant for each season, there’s a quick reference guide full of facts about each plant, including suitable soil tem-peratures.

Year-round cultivation also means growing plants during the heat of summer, which is why the book even has advice on how to grow heat-loving plants like tomatoes, chillies and basil. Lena Israelsson is one of Sweden’s most popular gardening persona-lities. She has a passion for growing plants and has written several books about kitchen gardening. Lena has twice been nominated for Sweden’s most prestigious non-fiction book prize, the August Prize.

He gets his listeners to open their eyes, ears and heart, to have the courage to take the first step towards change and, per-haps most important of all, to carry on with their journey.

• You don’t need to have the perfect plan, just the courage to take the first step.

• Live your life every day of the week, not just at weekends. • Open that good bottle of wine on a Tuesday, use your best crockery

on a Wednesday and go to the cinema on a Thursday. • If you decide to fight for something, you might win, but if you decide

not to fight, you’ll always lose!

Paolo’s Training JournalIf you want to turn words into action and take control of your training then you’ll find a training journal to be the perfect tool.

Paolo inspires you to get started and gives you his best advice on how to train and there is even a reference session to check your progress against.

The journal pages are suitable for different kinds of activities from strength training and running to yoga and stretching. By keeping a jour-nal and making a note of your results you’ll be motivated to keep improv-ing your personal best. ”So what are you waiting for? Get down on the floor and give me fifteen!”

Sugar Detox

Do you want to put an end to your sugar addiction with the added benefit of improving your complexion, stomach, immune system and energy lev-els? There are huge gains to removing sugar from your diet, yet it’s hard to resist this sweet white substance.

Since it takes 21 days to kick the habit, this book contains a 3-week programme during which you’ll enjoy nutritional food that cleanses and strengthens your body. The book also teaches you how to recognise your body’s own signals and needs and achieve a balanced relationship with food where sugar does not control your choices, your well-being or your mood.

The delicious gluten-free, vegetable-packed recipes include green smoothies, morning shots, linseed bread with creamed avocado, a quinoa bowl with beetroot, fried red onion, avocado, feta cheese and roasted seeds, buckwheat pie and baked sweet potatoes so it will feel more like a food orgy than a strict programme. Resisting the craving is so much easier when you give your body the right nourishment and can eat tasty and filling food.

Filippa Salomonsson is a holistic health coach for women and sees well-being from a wider perspective that includes diet, training and mind-fulness as well as relationships and careers. Filippa used to run a PR agency in New York but she now has her own juice company and shop in Stockholm.

Creativity & Mindfulness

– 100 pictures to colour in yourself

Welcome to a world of inspirational pictures! Welcome to your very own world of colour!

The constant demands of the modern world make it difficult for many people to achieve inner peace and to live in the present. Mindfulness is a way of reducing stress and anxiety by focusing on the here and now.

This book offers you a practical exercise in mindfulness. Colouring in the intricate templates will help you to express your creativity and find inner peace and awareness. You don’t need any experience to get started, just some different coloured pens.

The aim of the book is to inspire you to be imaginative in the way you colour in the patterns and motifs and to perhaps start creating your own patterns and pictures in the direction your inner self takes you. You’ll soon start to notice how the combination of colours has a positive impact on you and how it arouses your intrinsic creativity and eliminates stress.

Bird Diary 2017

From January’s birdlife, which goes on the back burner during the bitter winter cold to the melancholy autumn months when the migrating birds leave us for more southerly latitudes. Each season has its particular birds, and this richly illustrated book concentrates on the bird’s annual cycle.

Here you can note down everything –day-to-day events that should not be forgotten, or hearing he first blackbird of the year.

In addition, each week a bird species is presented with an attractive bird motif painted by Dan Zetterström, one of the finest bird illustrators in the world.

This is the ideal diary for anyone interested in nature, but also for people fascinated by birds. There are also weather symbols which make it easy to record each day’s weather and temperatures.

The text is written by Mats Ottosson, a journalist with a parti cular interest in birds and nature.

Knitting Scarves and Shawls

This book is bursting with patterns for beautiful warm scarves and shawls, all of which are classic, playful garments with materials, tech-niques and colours that interact and inspire.

Scarves make perfect garments for trying out new techniques and this book proves it with techniques such as lace knitting in different direc-tions, entrelac knitting, herringbone knitting and multi-colour knitting. Sometimes a number of techniques and yarns are even combined in one garment.

There are also scalloped edges and patterns that you can add or remove and the book inspires you to mix materials and use leftover yarn to make garments that will last you a lifetime.

The patterns include floaty scarves, a classic bucket hat with matching mittens, bib scarves with ears for toddlers, soft graphic scarves knitted in herring bone or entrelac, multi–coloured patterned mittens from Latvia and a simple triangular linen scarf that gets softer over the years – all gar-ments that are both useful and fun to knit.

Erika Åberg is a writer, lecturer and qualified handicraft consultant specialising in textiles. She is also an experienced adult education teacher and has a passion for knitting, sewing, embroidery, paper cutting and working with and for Swedish wool.
