Within weeks of taking over the Council's Executive Labour Councillors put forward plans for a Council owned Housing Company and a Housing Commission to drive forward the building of affordable homes, mainly for rent, in Stockport. "It is outrageous that in the 21st century in one of the richest countries in the world there are people who do not have a home" said Cllr Sheila Bailey.Cllr Sheila Bailey.Cllr Sheila Bailey.Cllr Sheila Bailey. The end of the The end of the The end of the The end of the NHS?NHS?NHS?NHS?
In 2010 the NHS was acknowledged as the best healthcare system in the world. Six years later, after disastrous Tory policies of re-organisation, privatisation and underfunding the NHS is in crisis!. At the last Council meeting Labour Councillors put forward a resolution demanding that the Government properly funds a publicly-run NHS which puts people before profit, consulting Councillors, patients and the wider public on plans which affect local services rather than consistently underfunding health and social care.
Cllr Philip HardingCllr Philip HardingCllr Philip HardingCllr Philip Harding said "If we do not fight for the NHS now, universal healthcare free at the point of need will become a thing of the past. We can't allow that to happen". Several new trees will be planted adjacent to the upgraded Mercian Way/Booth Street junction and alongside Mercian Way between Newton St and Greek St roundabout.

Local artist Eamonn Murphy was asked, by the Council, to produce a series of images of local landmarks. This is part of a campaign to highlight and celebrate some of Stockport's fantastic buildings. These great images will be displayed in and around the town centre. In addition, the artist is holding an exhibition, ‘Stopfordia, a celebration of Stockport's architectural treasures by Eamonn Murphy’ at the War Memorial Art Gallery from 22 October - 23 November 2016.
After some delays over planning issues, the skate park should start to be built later this year. "It will provide a great facility for young people in the area" said Cllr Philip Harding.Cllr Philip Harding.Cllr Philip Harding.Cllr Philip Harding. There is also a new Alexandra Park Friends Group and if you are interested in joining, please let us know and we will pass on your details to the Secretary.

If you are otherwise healthy it will usually clear up on its own within a week. However, for some ‘at-risk’ groups, such as pensioners, expectant mums or those with an underlying medical condition, the flu virus can be life threatening so the NHS offers these people a free vaccination. "Having the flu jab could protect you from serious illness or even save your life" said Cllr Richard Coaton.Cllr Richard Coaton.Cllr Richard Coaton.Cllr Richard Coaton.
