VILLAGE  HALL’s annual special clean Thank you to all those who helped with the above in August and to Lorraine and John Palmer who organised it. Also to Alan Sturt who, immediately he shed his big boot months after surgery, got down to work painting the interior of the

hall and sorting out the vandalised picnic table amongst other things. _____________________________

Harrowbarrow & Metherell Community Association Report of 38th AGM, 28 May, at the Village Hall

It was disappointing that not many attended to hear about the past year’s work by the committees of the Community Association (CA). Chair Chris Miller was quick to praise all who had contributed to the smooth running of the CA over the past year, in particular those volunteers who gave their time to supervise the opening and closing of the village hall, deliver newsletters and do the many odd jobs needed around the hall. Officers and committee members were thanked for their commitment. The events lighting was proving a real asset and Simon Maclennan and Linda Beth Murphy were thanked for taking the lead on providing much appreciated lighting programmes to suit individual needs. Eileen Sturt of the Social Committee had made great strides in securing funding from Bags for Help and was hoping to secure more funds from the Lottery to complete the play area project. All were reminded that the Hall is our main asset and should be promoted not only to our regular users but for high value weekend lettings. It was agreed to appoint a PR person to spearhead this. Fixed costs continue to rise, along with maintenance costs, so expenditure has been outstripping income. Providing a ‘go to’ venue costs money. The Film Club was in its fourth year and was well supported by a loyal group of members. Do please promote it to others and remember that as part of C-flym there are a number of local film clubs you can attend with your membership card. All were urged to support events arranged by the Social Committee to help reduce the current deficit and to look out for forthcoming events in HAMLET. The HAMLET provides hard copy of all that is going on in the community but Jean Miller urged people to remember to browse both the Website and Facebook pages. She thanked the loyal band of advertisers who supported the CA through their advertising. She reported that 20

Welcome Packs had been delivered to new residents over the past year and it was encouraging to see new residents getting involved in the life of the villages. Officers and Committees were elected for the ensuing year. Please see the Website and CA notice board in the Village Hall Games Room for an up-dated list with contact phone numbers. Meetings for the coming year: 03/02/2020, AGM 26/05/2020 and 21/09/2020. Please try and attend to hear the news from our regular hall users and the work of all the standing committees. If you would like to book the Hall or the Games Room, please contact Lorraine Palmer 350911. If you are interested in playing a bigger part in those committees please contact the chairs listed below - we would love to hear from you: Hall Management ~ John Roberts 351911 Social Committee ~ Lorraine Palmer 350911 Hamlet Film Club – Eileen Sturt 350639 HAMLET ~ Jean Miller 351081

Mindless Vandalism at our Villages’ Play Area Must be Stopped For over 8 years, people made coffee, baked cakes, walked, sold stuff, held fund raisers and generally worked their hardest to raise money for the play area at the village hall for their children and future generations. We ended up with the best facility in the area. Now, because of mindless vandalism, the equipment is gradually getting destroyed. The Parish Council have taken the responsibility to maintain this equipment and the considerable financial strain was lifted from Hall Management. Following the latest batch of damage we have now received the following (edited) email from the parish clerk:- “Over the last few months Harrowbarrow Play Park  has been the target of vandalism and criminal damage. In Harrowbarrow there have been fires in the bin which has had to be replaced, picnic benches have been damaged and the slide has been deliberately broken on more than one occasion (and after money had been spent on repairing it).  At a recent Recreations Committee, it was decided that the Parish Council have not got the monetary resources to continue to pay for deliberate damage to the play equipment. I hope the Harrowbarrow Hall Management Committee will understand our decision.”  Would an appeal to those responsible to stop be of any use? The alternative would be to close the area as the damage is putting the safety of users at risk.  May I urge readers to be vigilant and report any

unreasonable behaviour. (Please do not read this and think "It's not my kids, they are too small,” because you will lose it as well.) This damage is not covered by insurance and the cost of repair will have to be met out of hall funds raised by the community. The Management Committee will have to decide between hall and play area (and the hall will win every time). John Roberts (Chair, Hall Management)

Harrowbarrow & Metherell Village Hall Recreation Project By the time this Hamlet goes out, the first turf will have been cut to begin

the construction of the above project, starting with the Boules Court, all thanks to funding from the Village Hall Community Association, the National Lottery Community Fund, generous donations by villagers and Tesco Bags of help scheme.

Congratulations and a huge thank you to Eileen Sturt for her persistent belief in getting the project up and running and the many hours of work she put into spearheading and achieving funding. She says, “It has taken a long time to get to this point but we will soon be able to play boules and table tennis to our hearts’ content! A booking system will be eventually on the Village Hall website to show availability of each facility but play will remain FREE. It is a project by our Community for the whole Community and beyond, so please use it to the full, meet up with old friends and make new ones whilst you enjoy the exercise and fresh air.”

Harrowbarrow and Metherell Annual Show report This year, although the show clashed with Liskeard Show and many sporting occasions, we had more entries than in all the years the show has been held. We were particularly pleased there

were many new faces, people putting in exhibits who had not shown before, and with the increased support from the school and playgroup. This year the flowers were especially good, making a wonderful display. The late spring meant the garden produce classes were rather sparse so we hope for better things next year. The committee thank everyone who helped both with the preparation and clearing away, the excellent workers in the kitchen who gave us a delicious lunch and afternoon refreshments and the judges who made the winners delighted to receive prize cards. To those who didn’t win, better luck next year. We always welcome new people on the committee, usually only four meetings during the year, but two very busy days at the show. Also ideas for new classes before we decide on the next schedule in November.

Congratulations to Chloe Reed and Mark Blatchford on their marriage in July at Calstock Church which was followed by a stylish reception at the village hall which they had transformed magically into a venue worthy of the occasion. We wish them and little Max every happiness.

Congratulations to Gwen Bolt on her 90th birthday in August. Gwen threw a party when a good time was had by all and a special flower arrangement was later presented to her at Luncheon Club of which she is a steadfast member.

Welcome to new residents: Mark & Michele and dogs Sadie & Billy who have moved from Plymouth to Furlongs, Lower Metherell.

Condolences to Audrey Hoskins and family and friends of Turnley who passed away whilst with the family in Scotland. Turnley was a longterm resident in Harrowbarrow and, after they moved to KellyBray, continued to support enthusiastically all our local events, including Lunch Club. After a distinguished career in Pharmacy, he pursued his hobbies of photography and wood carving and developed a notable collection of bonsai trees. Until his seventies he was a keen cross country skier and golfer and he and Audrey always enjoyed foreign travel. His cheery friendliness will be very much missed.

Hamlet Bowls Club - A Vintage Year

This year, as well as providing the usual enjoyment and exercise for our members during our two sessions per week, we have had the opportunity to meet and play matches with teams from a record number of neighbouring clubs. We appreciate the efforts of our Captain, Kate Jennings, in arranging these fixtures and hope to continue with them in the future.

As mentioned in the last issue of Hamlet, we are keen to welcome new members to join us, experienced or not. Please contact me if interested.      John Eccles (Chair) 01579 350329 email: [email protected]

Report on Harrowbarrow Open Gardens 2019 in aid of St Luke’s Hospice

The Open Gardens in July was a glorious day, raising £1534.50 for St Luke’s Hospice. Unfortunately, there were three large sports events televised on that day which was

reflected in fewer visitors than previous years. However, the refreshments in the Village Hall did a roaring trade with people taking advantage of the parking at the Village Hall, some even indulging in two visits for refreshments. I should like to thank everyone involved in making the day such a success. It is a busy though enjoyable day for those opening their gardens and involves a lot of time and effort. Many thanks also to Jo and her team who yet again worked very hard catering for the visitors, and also the many people who made cakes. The fundraising helps St Luke’s to continue to deliver end of life care in the local community. Norma Gilbert

St Dominic Park Resurrects the old Club House Many months ago, a small group of retired residents on our park decided to get the old club house back into use as a community centre. Now, after something like a 1000 hours of labour, we have got it open. On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons the café is open, and Friday evenings a b.y.o bar for a general get-together. The last Friday in August there was a quiz night attended by 36 people, organised by two lady residents who had never done one before. It was a big success and we plan more in the future. There is a musical evening by a local duo planned for September. We have a diet club, knit and natter club, Macmillan charity event and cream teas in the offing. So, with a few donations from residents and a beg-and-borrow attitude, we have done it! Also we have a marvellous marathon runner who has completed many runs and raised money to buy a defibrillator for the park (helped by a donation from owners Wyldecrest Park Management). Hopefully a bright future will be happening for all residents on the Park.

W.I. Summer Report June began with our W.I. hosting the Tamar Valley W.I. Group Meeting.  Entitled ‘Inspire, Imagine, Create’ it certainly ticked all boxes.  Julia O’Connell (textile artist) was our speaker, bringing along her impressive work. The evening was much enjoyed by

all.  The June monthly meeting was a thought provoking and emotional talk on ‘Mental Health Awareness’ by Suzanne Alderson,  July brought Mary Cole, speaking on ‘200 Years of Women’s Underwear’.  Jean Miller reported on the AGM at Bournemouth.  The famous annual Hareswood Cream Tea was again a big success.  Max Simpson spoke in August on ‘Tools to Amuse and Confuse ‘.  There was a group celebration for the CFWI Centenary at Albaston and a tree was planted by the Lord Lieutenant to mark the occasion.  Our entry in LCCP show was awarded second place.  Work on the telephone box continues.  Any local business wishing to advertise in the phone box for a small yearly donation should contact [email protected]. (The size of adverts should be 15cm high by 16 cm wide.) Our meetings are on the third Wednesday of each month, 7.30pm in the Games Room, Harrowbarrow & Metherell Village Hall.  New members always welcome.  Updates can be found on our Facebook page - Harrowbarrow and Metherell Women’s Institute - along with contact information. Nicki Thornton

__________________________ Birds Report by Geoff Roberts

I was extremely happy once again this summer when, down in the village, I heard the unmistakable sound of screaming Swifts flying in formation, although the lack of Swallows and House Martins has been a big disappointment. We are lucky to live in our villages where so many different birds can be spotted throughout the year. Astounding! I hope it

continues. There have been declines though I just go on the ones I no longer see in my garden. They may have found a better source of food elsewhere as a recent report from the BTO (British Trust for Ornithology) states that certain species of bird seem to have adapted by frequenting bird feeders rather than the hard graft of finding their favourite food in the hedgerows and fields.  The message is to carry on feeding the birds and get the wonderful feeling of satisfaction on counting and spotting how many different birds you get in your garden.  But try not to feed them bread!  Any questions or sightings contact me on [email protected].

S.H.A.M.E. Here we are, heading off into the Autumn season……where did the Summer go?....and the panto seems so very long ago……Oh yes it does! For our Autumn production we have gone into cahoots with the Entertainments Committee to provide you with an exciting opportunity to become Poirot…or Morse…or indeed Sherlock (bring your own Dr Watson!) On 22-23 November, at 7.30pm, we are offering a 2 course Theatre Supper (bring your own bottle), along with a Murder Mystery evening ‘Death by Paintbrush’. While eating, you will be able to uncover your inner detective to solve the mystery of the murder unfolding on stage. All this for the princely sum of £12 per ticket. Tickets available from the Post Office and through Frank Ellwood on 07786338061

As always, we are constantly looking for new members of the cast or, indeed, direction/production staff. So, if you have a bent to be in front of, or behind, the curtains, please give me a call or come along to the next meeting and say hello.

And Finally..... Calling all future light and sound engineers! Do you want to learn how the light and sound desks used for our plays and Panto work? Do you want to become part of the technical support team? Do you want to be trained by a real BBC producer and engineer? Are you aged 14 or over? Then give me a call and register your interest!

Calstock Parish Archive Our tent at Albaston fete in June proved very popular, with 175 people visiting over the afternoon. Our photographs always prove very popular. At the end of July we were at the Calstock Heritage Weekend and Steamboat Rally. It was the first time for many years that we have had an exhibition in Calstock. The biggest news from the archive is that we are getting ever closer to relocating to Albaston cemetery chapel. The builders have finished the renovation work covered by the LEADER funding which the Calstock Parish Council had secured. Following on from that, they undertook work on the undercroft. This was paid for by a grant the archive received from the FOYLE FOUNDATION. The archive is now decorating and making the interior ready prior to the move. The thought of packing everything for the move is quite daunting. Our local Councillors, Dorothy Kirk and Jim Flashman, have kindly agreed to fund the purchase of additional furniture through their Cornwall Councillor Community Chest Grant scheme. We have a busy few weeks ahead, but we will at last be able to move into larger accommodation. More than ever, we will be needing more volunteers. If you think you might be interested, email: [email protected], 01579 351413 or call at the archive to see what we do. The archive is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays 12.00 – 5.00 and Thursdays, Fridays 9.00 – 2.00

An important document as it gives us a chance to have a say about planning decisions in the parish. Policies also on landscape, heritage, biodiversity and the environment and local business, services and infrastructure. In September there were 8 consultations. There are two more public consultations in October: Sunday 06 October at Calstock Church from 11am to 1pm and Wednesday 09 October at Harrowbarrow & Metherell Village Hall 2pm to 5pm. ___________________________ Foraging - a seasonal piece by Anita Bowden

What a wonderful month is September with its rich harvests, both in the fields and hedgerows. The blackberries were a little late this year – waiting for the rain to fall and fatten the fruit. There are many uses for blackberries – jam but, better if you do not like the seeds, blackberry jelly. Once, I used to drip the cooked blackberries through muslin, hanging it up, to drip slowly all night then add sugar to make a wonderful clear jam, but now I mash the blackberries through a sieve - not such a clear jam but just as tasty. Once the whole family went blackberrying together – I had my little basket for a long time. My mother always said, “Don’t pick the blackberries after 14 September because the Devil will have peed on them!” Some people say the date is Michaelmas Day, 29 September but what it really means is the blackberries lose their lustre and turn seedy so are not very nice to eat. There are many things to make with blackberries – tarts, crumbles, sauces, wine (a very dry wine) and many others. It was a very important fruit during the War and children went with their school to pick for the War

effort. Anything we could grow or forage for in Great Britain saved the lives of Merchant Seamen who brought us food through dangerous waters. However, whatever you forage, please do it responsibly, not stripping the hedgerows, leaving some for the hedgehogs, birds and field mice. We have lost our wonderful flowers, primroses and violets, because of vigorous picking, with only a few hedges left to show us the glories of wild flowers. P.S. The Women’s Institute also played its part in the War effort. On record is the Bearsted and Thurnham W.I. who made 800 lbs (360kgs) of jam in 6 days – Jam & Jerusalem!!

Thanks to Jean Miller for the two recipes below Blackberry (Rubus Fruticosus)

Whilst an infusion of the leaves of the blackberry eases a sore throat, either drinking or gargling it, a better way to ease such symptoms is to enjoy a small glass of Bramble Whisky – sipped very slowly! Don’t forget though, it is considered bad luck to pick blackberries after 11 October (old Michaelmas Day) because the Devil has spat on the bushes the previous evening! New Michaelmas is 29 Sept! Nan used to put us off as children by saying, “The spiders peed on them!” Whatever your superstition, remember to go ahead and make the whisky before 11 Oct.

Bramble Whisky 1 bottle of blended whisky (not the single malt!) Blackberries and granulated white sugar (Here’s a tip ~ spread berries on kitchen paper for an hour or so to allow insects to escape. Then put the berries in a colander. Sprinkle the surface with salt. Put the colander in a large bowl of water, just to the level of the berries. This should bring any remaining insects to the surface.) Leave to dry thoroughly. Fill a bottle to a 1/3 with blackberries. Then to 2/3 mark with sugar. Then top up with whisky. Leave in a cool dark place for about three months. Turn the bottle regularly to dissolve the sugar. Decant to separate the fruit. Then drink for medicinal purposes! This whisky soaked fruit is delicious popped into an apple crumble!

Sloe (Prunus Spinosa) As it is autumn, what better way than to search the hedgerows for sloes. This year I think there will be a bumper crop. Remember, when you go to gather sloes from the Blackthorn to take some antiseptic wipes to avoid painful and even infected wounds from their sharp thorns. The best known way of using sloes is to make sloe gin. Recipes will tell you to

Page 20: Autumn 2019 2 copy - Microsoftbtckstorage.blob.core.windows.net/site12632/Autumn 2019 pdf .pdf · Wed 02 All Saints Church Community Coffee Morning 10am-12noon Thu 03 Chiropody Clinic

prick the fruit all over with a needle. An easier way to copy the action by frost is to pop your freshly picked sloes in the freezer for a couple of days. Nan always said fill a bottle 1/3 full with the fruits, top up first with 1/3 of granulated sugar then with gin before the ritual of turning. Decant just before Christmas. Here is a recipe for those who like actual measurements. If you can hang on to a bottle for the Flower Show then do so and surprise the judge!

Makes approximately 1 x 70cl bottle 450g sloes, washed, dried and frozen as above

350g granulated white sugar 70cl bottle gin

Divide the fruit, sugar and gin between two bottles. Seal the bottles and leave in a cool, dark place for 3 months, shaking then turning the bottles occasionally. If made in the autumn it’s ready for Christmas. When decanted and the sloes removed, there will be enough to fill a bottle with a little left over. Time to taste, perhaps over a little crushed ice! Rather than throwing away the alcohol soaked sloes you can add them to a bottle of red or white wine, left for a month to make an unusual fortified wine. But … a good way is to make chocolates! So here’s another recipe.

Makes about 20 chocolates 500g dark chocolate (or milk chocolate if preferred)

500g gin-soaked sloes (this is the weight before removing the stones) stones removed

85g toasted hazelnuts or toasted flaked almonds, mashed up (toast in a non-stick frying pan until golden, shaking them occasionally)

Melt the chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering hot water. Stir in the sloes and nuts. Take a sheet of greaseproof or parchment paper and put 5cm blobs of the mix onto the paper. Leave to set. Now enjoy!

Individual crimes are allocated to the Response Policing Team or a more specialist team. The team is committed to engaging with the community. Please see the CallingtonPolice Website and dedicated facebook page for details of where they will be visiting. There are many ways to contact your local policing team:-
