Autumn enrolments are dealt with on a “first come, first served” basis. Previous membership of a course does not guarantee a place. So, don’t be disappointed, ENROL NOW AS SOON AS YOU SEE THE BROCHURE.

Office Hours

The Guildhouse Office is normally open during the term as follows:Monday to Thursday 9.00 am - 4.00 pm and 6.45 - 9.15 pmFriday 9.00 am - 4.00 pm.

Please note that in the evenings the office is attended by a voluntary steward who, if unable to answer your query, will take a message so that office staff can return your call. Anyone who is interested in becoming a VOLUNTARY EVENING STEWARD please contact the office.

All courses are numbered with a three digit course code. Most courses take place at The Percival Guildhouse or via Zoom.

For some courses, students are provided with a course outline/syllabus. It is intended to present a general statement of the topics to be covered and the order in which they are to be presented. It will be appreciated that successful learning outcomes are affected by the prior knowledge of the group and by individual interests and expertise. Some variation in the time given to particular topics, and the precise order in which they are presented, is therefore to be expected. Full course information can be found on our website.

LANGUAGESWHICH LEVEL TO CHOOSE?

We offer a wide range of language classes from Beginner level right up to Advanced level. Beginner levels are for students with no knowledge or very little knowledge of the language. Advanced levels are for students who are fluent in a language and would like to practise their conversation skills. All our other classes fall somewhere in between these two levels!

The class descriptions in the following pages will give you a good idea of what is covered in each class but in order to decide which class will best suit you we suggest contacting us to arrange a quick chat with the tutor who will then advise you. Alternatively, you can join the class you think will suit you best and if, after the first lesson, you and the tutor think a different class would suit you better we will do our best to transfer you to that class instead.

WELSH

401 WELSH FOR BEGINNERSThursday 12 Meetings 12:30 - 14:30 Tutor: Corinna Chandler £114.00, £28.50

We will have fun getting to grips with Welsh pronunciation with the aim of being able to read aloud those road signs by the end of the term! In a friendly and supportive environment, we will learn to give and understand basic information and decipher the meaning of place names, as well as look at some Welsh songs and poems to appreciate the sounds and rhythm of this ancient but thriving language. This class will take place in person.

101 FRENCH EXPERIENCE INTERMEDIATE LEVEL 2Monday 12 Meetings 19:00 - 20:30 Tutor: Caroline Perry £85.50, £21.50

In this friendly group, we shall continue to develop listening and speaking skills with lively discussions. This class is conducted mainly in French, in a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere, no text book is required, materials will be provided. Newcomers welcome. This class will take place in person.

This mostly in French class is aimed at students who are gaining confidence in the language and are able to hold a conversation. Students will prepare weekly news reports on their chosen subject, and we will discuss culture and French experiences; grammar exercises and listening practice will also be part of the lessons. Book or magazine to be confirmed. This class will take place in person.

404 FRENCH CONVERSATION PRACTICEThursday 12 Meetings 18:00 - 18:30 Tutor: Caroline Perry £30.00, £7.50

This 30 minute class is intended to be very relaxed to give you plenty of opportunity to practise your French from the comfort of your home. With a maximum of 6 students, each week we will discuss a different topic and learn new vocabulary. No text book is required, e-materials will be provided. Suitable for Intermediate or Advanced level. This class will be delivered via Zoom only.

Students will prepare weekly news reports on various articles or subjects of interest and discuss culture and current French or global issues. We will be using articles from the magazine La Vie Outre Manche for grammar exercises, role plays, and CD listening practice. Debates, TV extracts will also be part of the lessons. This class will take place in person.

This all in French class is aimed at students who are very fluent in the language and have an interest in French life and current affairs. Students will prepare weekly news reports to debate on current questions facing French society. Articles from the magazine La Vie Outre Manche will also be used as a base for discussions. Listening practice from various media, CDs, and TV will be authentic reports and dialogues from native French population, with an insight into use of colloquial French from various French speaking countries. Students are already confident with all tenses and only complex grammar will be studied. This class will take place in person.

Building on last year’s work, we shall introduce further grammar, but with the emphasis on spoken German. We shall also look at some relatively simple texts. Newcomers with some German also welcome. This course will take place in person.

Building on last year’s work we shall introduce some new grammar and develop our vocabulary further. There will be plenty of opportunity for speaking, listening and reading. This class will take place in person.

The focus will be on enjoying speaking this beautiful language in a friendly environment, while learning the basics of grammar alongside useful vocabulary and phrases such as giving simple information, ordering a drink in Italy and talking about likes and dislikes. This class will take place in person.

304 ITALIAN IMPROVERS LEVEL 1Wednesday 12 Meetings 09:30 - 11:30 Tutor: Corinna Chandler £114.00, £28.50

This is a friendly and welcoming class who have covered the present and past tenses as well as useful tourist language such as ordering food and drink and buying tickets. We will consolidate the past tense, learn to talk about future plans, and begin reading longer texts about Italian geography and culture. Students will be encouraged to speak Italian as much as possible in a supportive and positive environment. This class will take place in person.

203 ITALIAN IMPROVERS LEVEL 2Tuesday 12 Meetings 12:30 - 14:30 Tutor: Corinna Chandler £114.00, £28.50

Having learnt the main tenses (past, present and future), we will work on consolidating our language by reading stories, and covering topics such as recipes, Italian geography and culture, health and hobbies in more depth, as well as more grammar such as pronouns and the subjunctive mood. There will be a continued focus on speaking as much as possible during the lessons. This class will take place in person.

106 ITALIAN IMPROVERS LEVEL 2Monday 12 Meetings 12:00 - 14:00 Tutor: Carmela Esposito Faraone £114.00, £28.50

This is the ideal course if you intend to consolidate your knowledge of the basic structure of Italian and build upon it by learning new vocabulary and grammar rules. It is focused mainly on speaking and listening skills and you will have plenty of opportunities to practise with fellow students and the tutor. Prior knowledge of present, present perfect (‘passato prossimo’) and imperfect tenses is recommended. This course will take place via Zoom.

The session will focus on widening vocabulary, improving pronunciation through various activities relating to the weekly topic. This class will take place in person.

503 IMPROVERS’ LATINFriday 12 Meetings 11:00 - 13:00 Tutor: Rosemary King £114.00, £28.50

Latin- the language of Virgil and Ovid, but also of the Latin Mass, Gregorian chant and the Vulgate- the version of the Bible which informed our culture for 1000 years. Latin- the key to understanding inscriptions in Britain’s churches and other ancient buildings. This class is based on the textbook The Cambridge Latin Course, book 2, (ISBN 0-521-644682) and we expect to have reached Stage 19 by

the beginning of the Autumn term. If you are new to the group, please contact the tutor on 01788573067, email [email protected] for advice on catching up on material already covered. We shall be looking at other texts and inscriptions, listening to music with Latin texts, and maybe even singing some Latin songs ourselves. This is a very friendly and lively group who will welcome you and make you feel at home. The class will take place via Zoom.

408 INTERMEDIATE LATINThursday 12 Meetings 16:00 - 18:00 Tutor: Rosemary King £114.00, £28.50

This course is for students who have already done some Latin- perhaps many years ago. We shall be using the Oxford Latin Reader ISBN 0-19-521209-6, as well as The Cambridge Latin Anthology ISBN 0-521-57877-9. In addition to this, we read Latin stories and use the Internet and other resources to study medieval manuscripts, tombstones, and other interesting materials, many of them suggested or contributed by students. We also attempt to solve the Times Latin Crossword each week and discuss results in the lesson. New students with some knowledge of Latin are very welcome to join us: we are a very friendly group. This class will take place via Zoom.

Course fees are non-refundable except in the following circumstances:

• Class closed due to low numbers. • Medical reasons - prompt notification is required. • Moving out of the area. • Unsuitability of the class providing the request is made to the office immediately after the first meeting.

If a class is closed, a full refund will be given. If the class is unsuitable, an administration charge of £10 will be deducted from the refund. In all other circumstances where a refund can be offered, an administrative charge of £10.00 will be made together with a deduction of any sessions to date whether the student has attended or not.

Please note that no refunds will be given under any circumstances for dayschools, short courses, visits or classes running on low numbers unless your place can be filled by another student, when a £10.00 administration charge will be made.

Natural euphoria at the end of the war, and the optimism of the first few months of the peace, soon evaporated as pressing problems in Ireland and India reasserted themselves. We will consider a period characterised by industrial troubles, the fall of Lloyd George and the Empire Exhibition at Wembley. This class will take place in person.

Dickens’ works cry out for public reading and performance, but often the result is disappointing. We look at his haunting Great Expectations and the more earthy Martin Chuzzlewit (containing two of Dickens greatest comic rogues Mr Pecksniff and Mrs Gamp) to show that they can be triumphantly brought to life in the cinema and on television. We will end with something appropriately seasonal but not A Christmas Carol! This class will take place in person.

Come and learn how to paint with Acrylics. This class will cover basic painting principles, teach you how to create and use colour wheels to enable you to mix the colours you require. During the sessions you will be encouraged and supported to develop your skills and knowledge through a project of your own choice. Learning will be through one-to-one support, demonstrations and class discussions. You will also get the opportunity to try out other art disciplines such as printmaking, mixed media and abstract art and learn some art history. As the course is very much student- led, there is no syllabus but you get to choose what demonstrations you would like to see. The course is suitable for all skill levels, and content will be tailored to each student’s needs. Come and develop existing skills and learn new ones in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. How the conservative art establishment in France in the early 19th century favoured traditional approaches to painting and how certain artists began to challenge this by exploring new styles like Realism and Impressionism. We’ll also look at the Pre-Raphaelites in England, who rebelled against the demands of academic art. The stand taken by these revolutionary artists allowed more experimentation towards the end of the century, with Cezanne, Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, Matisse, Braque and Picasso really pushing the boundaries. The development of fashion and textile design for clothing and interiors will be explored looking at styles, colour, fabrics and the influence of social, political and technological factors on design throughout the century. The work of designers such as William Morris, Sonia Delaunay, Elsa Schiaparelli, Lucienne Day and Zandra Rhodes will be examined and the involvement of artists in textile design during the post war period, such as Graham Sutherland and Henry Moore, will be included. The course will take the form of powerpoint presentations illustrated with samples of textiles and garments. Anyone with an interest in fashion and textiles is welcome and students will be encouraged to bring along any relevant objects that they may have. This class will take place in person.

Have you ever wanted to learn lots of different textile techniques, either to put together to create a final piece or just have a go at different ones to find out which you would like to pursue further; then this course is for you! Over the 12 weeks of this course you will have the opportunity to try a range of different resist dying techniques such as tie dye, Shibori and Batik, hand patchwork, applique and quilting techniques and simple embroidery and Japanese Boro. We will then put together all or some of these techniques, including the pieces you have created, into making a final product such as a cushion cover, wall hanging or bag. An introduction to freestyle embroidery and the exciting things you can add to it! Sotai Ho is a very safe and gentle Japanese movement therapy that not only helps to ease painful joints & muscles but also re-aligns the whole body recreating optimal health. Join in a fun Workshop and learn how to needle felt. We will start the day with an introduction to the tools and materials and how to use them. What is the Guildhouse?

The Percival Guildhouse is Rugby’s Independent Centre for Adult Education and the Arts. It provides morning, afternoon and evening classes in a wide variety of non-vocational subjects, and a range of special events such as the popular Saturday day schools and art visits. It is a rare example in the Country of a centre with a full programme of non-vocational adult education.

The Guildhouse is a registered charity. A board of volunteer trustees, the Executive Committee have responsibility for its governance. The trustees are elected by the Guildhouse membership at each annual general meeting.

Day-to-day management, including administration

and development of the academic programme, is

carried out by a small team of employed staff,

assisted by members of the Executive Committee.

Class tutors are qualified professionals or recognised

authorities in their subjects.

Membership of the Guildhouse automatically

includes anyone who enrols on a course, who

belongs to a Guildhouse group or member

organisation, who is a class tutor, or is a volunteer

who helps and supports the Guildhouse in the

furtherance of its work. More details of Guildhouse
