Erik Ingolf TvedtSecretary-General of DSNAME

The Danish Society for Naval Archite-cture and Marine Engineering (DSNAME)has now completed its first full yearafter our transition into working “allEnglish”. This transition has generallybeen well received. It enables the largecommunity of expats living and workingwithin the Blue Denmark to fully benefitfrom the presentations and discussionswe facilitate. On the other hand we un-derstand that some of our loyal follow-ers are not pleased, but beg theirunderstanding for this move with thetimes in shipping.

The planning group has again managedto put together an inspiring series ofevents for the fall season. Please referto the section of this folder where theprogram is described in detail, and joinus for our events and go home with newknowledge, inspiration, answers andnew contacts. All events are executed incooperation with our partner IDA Mari-tim, who sponsors the meeting venueand the refreshments.

The planning group meets biannually, and consists of the board of DSNAMEand IDA Maritime (The Maritime Societyof Denmark), augmented by indepen-dent representatives from the whole ofthe Blue Denmark. All work for free intheir spare time, not only at the mee-tings, but also lifting the task of actu-

ally arranging the events. We are grate-ful for their contribution. The group isopen to other interested parties, sub-scribing to the values and ideas of DS-NAME. If you are interested in partici-pating in the work, please contact thesecretariat.

CEMTDSNAME is, alongside with IDA Maritim,a member of the Confederation of Eu-ropean Maritime Technology Societies(CEMT). CEMT is an independent confe-deration of professional institutions(those involved in education and pro-fessional development) and learned so-cieties (those facilitating the exchangeof information) in the field of maritimetechnology.

Through its member Societies, CEMT isable to call upon the knowledge, skillsand experience of over 35,000 professi-onal naval architects, marine engineersand others in the field of maritime te-chnology. It is therefore uniquely placedto contribute to the success of the Eu-ropean maritime industry. Further infor-mation is available at CEMT website:http://www.cemt.eu/

Without support no societyWe would like to extend our apprecia-tion to our contributors, the companieswho support our society financially –through ads in this publication or thro-ugh the company contribution – thanks!

Several fires have occurred in recent years, and development isrequired.

Monday 19 September from 1700 to 2000 hours - arrangement no. 319031ALTERNATIVE FUELS – FACTS AND TRENDS FOR THE FUTUREDifferent types of fuels (LNG, LPG, Methanol, Ethanol, different types of bio fuels etc.) havebeen introduced in recent years – and more will come. The physical characteristics of these fueltypes, pro et con for using them, will be presented at this meeting by relevant experts from uni-versities and the industry.

Monday 10 October from 1700 to 2000 hours - arrangement no. 319032LATEST NEWS FROM DTU MARITIME Different organizational changes at DTU Maritime have taken place and the consequences ofthese changes will be presented. Different interesting research projects will also be presentedand discussed including a look into the future of possible research activities.

Monday 24 October from 1700 to 2000 hours - arrangement no. 319033SAFER AND LESS POLLUTING EQUIPMENT ON EU SHIPSSafety standards for marine equipment installed on board ships are set internationally. Europeanlegislation has been established to ensure these requirements are applied uniformly on boardships flying the flag of any European Union (EU) country.

This autumn, the EC Directive 2014/90/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council onMarine Equipment, enters into force. This is the first major revision to the original Council Dire-ctive 96/98/EC, also known in layman’s terms as the ‘ship wheelmark standard’. Learn abouthow the Directive improves safety at sea, prevents marine pollution, and ensures internationalsafety standards for equipment on EU ships are interpreted in the same way across the EU.

The significant changes to the Marine Equipment Directive will be presented, including whichextra conditions will be imposed on the national authorities responsible for certifying equipmenton ships flying their flag when issuing, endorsing or renewing certificates, and what impacts thishas for manufacturers of marine equipment. This evening will try to provide an introduction andsome clarity of an rather unclear and complex subject – the MED 2014/90/EU - the ‘wheel mark’standard.

Monday 7 November from 1700 to 2000 hours - arrangement no. 319034DFDS 150TH ANNIVERSARYThis year DFDS, northern Europe’s largest integrated shipping and logistics company, celebratesits 150th anniversary. Instead of looking back through history, we would like to give an insightinto the future tonnage strategy of the ship owner.

The DFDS Newbuilding and Major Conversions department will present ongoing projects, howto implement best practice in the projects, and touch upon geographical and regulatory challen-ges.

Monday 5 December from 1700 to 2000 hours - arrangement no. 319035THE NEW SCANDLINES FERRIES FOR THE GEDSER –ROSTOCK SERVICE.In December, the two new ferries for Gedser -Rostock, "Berlin" and "Copenhagen", presumably havebeen in service for a while. Rasmus Nielsen from Scanlines will tell us about the ferries' design, buil-ding and modification. The ferries are tailor-made for the route. They have exceptional manoeuvra-bility and a propulsion system optimised for the variable water depth of the crossing and speedrestrictions.

The evening concludes with handing over this year's honorary award to one or more students at thetechnical maritime schools. The awarded is one or more students who made an extraordinary effortand completed the final thesis with an excellent result, which have practical application in the mari-time industry.

ATTENTION! Please check the Danish Society for Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering’s web-site regarding the final date of the events.
