Fungi Foray at Fern Tree – with Genevieve Gates Sun 29 April, 10 am – 12.30 pm Join mycologists and authors of “A field guide to tasmanian fungi” Genevieve Gates and David Ratkowsky on an autumnal exploration of all things fungi. This year’s fungi foray will take us wandering the forests of Fern Tree on the search of fruiting bodies (mushrooms) and their interconnected, interdependent mycelium networks. Prepare to be amazed by the diversity of forms, colours and species of fungi that live right here in Hobart. Get in fast this foray is LIMITED TO GROUP SIZE OF 10. Meet: Fern Tree Park, Fern Tree (opposite Fern Tree Tavern) Cost: $10 per adult (tea/coffee and light snack provided) Growing Wilder at Cascade Gardens Wed 2 May, 10 am – 2 pm Bush Adventures and the Positive Ageing Team host a delightful day out at the Cascade Gardens, South Hobart. Enjoy morning tea, a gentle guided walk then sit back, enjoy some music and lunch. Meet: Mathers House, 108-110 Bathurst Street, Hobart Note: All bookings for this event are through Mathers House, phone 6234 1441. Cost: $15 per person (includes food and a return bus from Mathers House). Join us for an evening presentation and discover how this incredible resource can help you learn more about Hobart’s biodiversity or Hobart’s biodiversity. Meet: Elizabeth Conference Centre, 7 Elizabeth Street, Hobart Cost: Free Event (bookings essential) Bushcare, Trackcare and Cragcare Groups Various dates and locations, throughout the year Bushcare volunteers make a huge difference to the health of Hobart’s bushland reserves. Get involved in bush regeneration, track development and maintenance, and be part of a vibrant community doing something truly meaningful for our city and natural world. It’s also a great way to have fun and make new friends. Children are also welcome to join these groups. Contact our Bushcare Co- ordinator for more details on 6238 2884. Welcome to the Bush Adventures Autumn Program 2018

Rocks need skipping.Holes need digging.Water needs splashing.Bugs and frogs and slimy stuff need finding.

This autumn join Bush Adventures as we search for fungi, uncovering a wonderful world of shapes, form and colour. We will have adventures on bikes, on foot and in the water, so come and be amazed by the wonders of nature.

All of our activities are great opportunities to make an “outdoor day” of it. Pack a picnic, take a stroll, wrap-up for warmth and prepare for a little bit of rain. It’s Hobart, the bushland city where there’s always an adventure awaiting.

Fungi Foray at Fern Tree – with Genevieve Gates Sun 29 April, 10 am – 12.30 pm

Join mycologists and authors of “A field guide to tasmanian fungi” Genevieve Gates and David Ratkowsky on an autumnal exploration of all things fungi. This year’s fungi foray will take us wandering the forests of Fern Tree on the search of fruiting bodies (mushrooms) and their interconnected, interdependent mycelium networks. Prepare to be amazed by the diversity of forms, colours and species of fungi that live right here in Hobart. Welcome to the Bush Adventures Autumn Program 2018

Rocks need skipping.Holes need digging.Water needs splashing.Bugs and frogs and slimy stuff need finding.

This autumn join Bush Adventures as we search for fungi, uncovering a wonderful world of shapes, form and colour. We will have adventures on bikes, on foot and in the water, so come and be amazed by the wonders of nature.

All of our activities are great opportunities to make an “outdoor day” of it. Pack a picnic, take a stroll, wrap-up for warmth and prepare for a little bit of rain. It’s Hobart, the bushland city where there’s always an adventure awaiting.

Fungi Foray at Fern Tree – with Genevieve Gates Sun 29 April, 10 am – 12.30 pm

Join mycologists and authors of “A field guide to tasmanian fungi” Genevieve Gates and David Ratkowsky on an autumnal exploration of all things fungi. This year’s fungi foray will take us wandering the forests of Fern Tree on the search of fruiting bodies (mushrooms) and their interconnected, interdependent mycelium networks. Prepare to be amazed by the diversity of forms, colours and species of fungi that live right here in Hobart. Get in fast this foray is LIMITED TO GROUP SIZE OF 10.Meet: Fern Tree Park, Fern Tree (opposite Fern Tree Tavern) Cost: $10 per adult (tea/coffee and light snack provided)

Growing Wilder at Cascade Gardens Wed 2 May, 10 am – 2 pm

Bush Adventures and the Positive Ageing Team host a delightful day out at the Cascade Gardens, South Hobart. Enjoy morning tea, a gentle guided walk then sit back, enjoy some music and lunch.Meet: Mathers House, 108-110 Bathurst Street, HobartNote: All bookings for this event are through Mathers House, phone 6234 1441. Cost: $15 per person (includes food and a return bus from Mathers House).

Atlas of Living Australia – Introductory SessionThu 10 May, 6–7.30 pm

The Atlas of Living Australia is a free, online database that gives you access to information about Australia’s amazing native plants, animals and other organisms. Join us for an evening presentation and discover how this incredible resource can help you learn more about Hobart’s biodiversity or Hobart’s biodiversity.Meet: Elizabeth Conference Centre, 7 Elizabeth Street, HobartCost: Free Event (bookings essential)

Bushcare, Trackcare and Cragcare Groups Various dates and locations, throughout the year

Bushcare volunteers make a huge difference to the health of Hobart’s bushland reserves. Get involved in bush regeneration, track development and maintenance, and be part of a vibrant community doing something truly meaningful for our city and natural world. It’s also a great way to have fun and make new friends. Children are also welcome to join these groups. Contact our Bushcare Co-ordinator for more details on 6238 2884.

FOR ALL ACTIVITIES please bring water to drink and a healthy snack. Always wear suitable clothing for the environment and conditions.

CHILDREN can only be booked into Bush Adventures programs suitable to their age. For our Bush Kids program, out-of-age siblings can attend without charge. We ask parents/guardians to be mindful that siblings do not detract from the enjoyment and engagement of others. The Go Wild, Go Solo program has a strict minimum age of 10 years.

JOIN A BUSH ADVENTURE AND GET OUTSIDE

All Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.Activities are $5.50 per child. Please bring a snack and water.Look out for the Bush Adventures flag when arriving at any activity.

Designed to provide opportunities for your family to do something special together in Hobart’s bushland. Combine one of these activities with a picnic, walk or your own fun and spend the whole day outdoors.

Nature Play Forum Thu 5 April, 6.30 – 8.15 pm

Join us for a fireside forum of discussions and a Q&A session looking at the benefits and barriers of connecting kids with nature.Meet: Sustainable Learning Centre, 50 Olinda Grove, Mount Nelson (Location to be confirmed)

Nature Play DayMon 16 April, 10 am – 12 pm

As part of Nature Play week Bush Adventures and friends will be running a number of engaging, fun and inspirational activities along the Hobart Rivulet – Linear Park. See hobartcity.com.au/natureplay for more detailsMeet: Various locations on the Hobart Rivulet – Linear Park.

Waterworks Reserve Night WalkFri 20 April, 5.30–7.30 pm

Hobart’s bushland comes alive at night as our nocturnal creatures are out and about. Join us at the Waterworks Reserve and see who is grazing on the lawn, scurrying through the trees and floating silently in the air. Meet: Waterworks Reserve, Site A, near front gates, Ridgeway.

Family Fungi ForaySat 12 May, 9.30–11.30 am

Fungi are one of the most fascinating and important organisms on Earth. If you’ve ever wanted to gain a better understanding and appreciation of the fungi kingdom and its wonders join us for a wander in the woods. Meet: Fern Tree Park, Fern Tree (opposite Fern Tree Tavern).

These sessions are designed for specific age groups and include a variety of engaging and educational, nature-based activities.

2–5 YEARS

Flora the Explorer’s Water PlayFri 20 April 1.30–3 pmDiscover the magic of water and go with the flow. We will explore the Sandy Bay Rivulet to see who calls the water home. Kids will also create a special water-inspired artwork to take home.Meet: Site 9, Waterworks Reserve, Ridgeway

Flora the Explorer’s Painters Play Tue 24 April, 10–11.30 amFollow Flora and discover where artists have roamed and masterpieces made. Play with paint, mix the colours of nature and create your very own work of art. Meet: Knocklofty Reserve parking and picnic area, end of Forest Road, West Hobart

Bush Stories It’s story time in the bush. Sit among gum trees, share in a story of wild creatures, amazing plants and other tales of our natural world. How does an eagle find food from so high up in the sky? Why are wildflowers so colourful? What sound does a bat make? Discover the wonder of the natural world’s sensory sensations. Meet: Ancanthe Park, Lenah Valley Road, Lenah Valley

Bush Bingo Scavenger HuntFri 27 April, 9.30–11 am

Explore Knocklofty Reserve looking for all sorts of wonderful treasures along the way. Will you be the first to call Bush Bingo! We’ll also make a great bush art creation to take home!Meet: Knocklofty Reserve parking and picnic area, end of Forest Road, West Hobart

7–10 YEARS

Never Eat Soggy Weet-Bix Navigation SkillsMon 23 April, 10–11.30 amCan you navigate like Bear Grylls in the bush? This navigation adventure will help you make sense of contours, compasses and the basics of finding your way.Meet: Carpark, corner Upper Domain and Lower Domain Road, Hobart. (Near Botanical Gradens)

The AMAZING RaceFri 27 April, 1–2.30 pmWear your running shoes and tie your laces in double knots. The AMAZING race at Knocklofty Reserve will sort the clever kookaburras from the rest. Race around the reserve, compete in bush-themed challenges and collect tokens from each event. Only one team can win! Meet: Knocklofty Reserve parking and picnic area, end of Forest Road, West Hobart

Ride the LoopSat 12 May, 1.30–3 pmThere’s a great place to ride right in the centre of Hobart. Bring your bike and experience the thrills of the trail, test your skills and zoom down hills on Hobart’s new Summit Loop Track. Meet: Middle car park, above the TasWater tanks, on the unnamed road leading to the Queens Domain summit. Note: Participants need to bring their own fully-functional bike with brakes and a helmet that meets Australian standards (AS/NZS 2063).

GO WILD, GO SOLO

‘Go Wild, Go Solo’ is for kids aged 10–14 keen to have their own bush adventures. Parental supervision is not required but for the safety of everyone involved please ensure your child/teenager can undertake independent and physically challenging activities. Thark Ridge HikeThu 26 April, 10 am – 12.30 pm

Join us for an adventure on kunanyi/Mt Wellington as we explore the wild, boulder-filled Thark Ridge Track in an incredible alpine environment. This is a walk for the adventurous! Meet: Meet: Big Bend carpark, Pinnacle Road, kunanyi/Mt WellingtonBring: Weather appropriate clothing, including a wind/rain jacket, sturdy closed shoes, a small backpack, water bottle and healthy lunch and snack.
