Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry,

and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” – John 6:34-35

“I A M THE BREAD OF L IFE”

Dear Friend,

Are you hungry? Often we find ourselves very hungry. But are you hungry in ways beyond a hunger for physical food? Are you hungry for love, hope, meaning, and life itself? Sometimes we feel emotionally or spiritually weak, empty, and unsatisfied. Often we are hungry for something that will really satisfy and strengthen us. Are you hungry in this way?

Shortly after feeding a crowd of thousands with just two fish and five loaves of bread, the people became hungry again. They wanted Jesus to feed them one more time. But Jesus had something for them far more satisfying and filling than physical food. He said of himself: “I am the bread of life.” Jesus went on to promise the people: “Whoever comes to me will never be hungry and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

What do you think Jesus meant when he compared himself to bread? In a recent sermon I said that Jesus is like bread because: 1) he is essential to life; 2) he satisfies our hungers; 3) he strengthens us; 4) he is

available to all; 5) he wants to be a part of our lives every day; 6) he needs to come inside of us; and 7) he

gives life to those who eat of this bread.

Several years ago the ELCA World Hunger program suggested an addition of two lines to the traditional “Come, Lord Jesus” dinner prayer. The suggested addition begins with the words: “Blessed be God, who is our bread.” Yes, indeed, as we are thankful for our daily bread, we are thankful most of all that God is our bread.

I am often very hungry. Are you? May we hungry people be satisfied and strengthened by the one who said: “I am the bread of life.”

AUGUST HIGHLIGHTS :

The August 11th council meeting opened with devotions. Pastor Wayne gave his report. The minutes of the previous council meeting were approved.

For old business, the council discussed: 1) contributions given so far for the roof fund; 2) the need for a work project for the “God’s Work – Our Hands” day; and 3) paper work being done for a new check signer.

For new business, the council discussed: 1) alerting the Nominating Committee to begin seeking nominees for council; 2) alerting the stewardship committee to begin work on the fall stewardship program; 3) attending the synod Discipleship Gatherings this fall; 4) attending “Safe Child” meetings in the synod; and 5) Pastor Wayne will write a letter to Immanuel Lutheran Church of Yorkville in appreciation for their 150 years of ministry.

Discussed attending a synod workshop for treasurers and bookkeepers that will be held September 26 in Rochelle. The calendar and worship attendance were reviewed. Reports from committees were given.

The financial report was approved. For last month the General Fund had an income of $13,611 and expenses of $13,418 and the Capital Fund had an offering income of $4,646 and expenses of $6,191. The meeting was adjourned.

Getting to know your Congregation Council members…..

Throughout 2015 we will profile one of Salem’s Cong regation Council members in each issue of the Salem LIFE.

I started out life on the corner of Book Road and 75th Street in the then rural, small town of Naperville. All 20 of Grandma Fraley’s grandkids went to church with her at one time or another. We all went to Granger or Wheatland School on Route 59 less than ten miles apart.

Then in 1961 Dad and Mom bought a farm north of Sandwich. I’ve lived in the same house with three different addresses (Route 1 Castle Street, Route 1 West Sandwich Road and now 4220 West Sandwich Road). In 1964 my aunt and uncle traded their four-year-old daughter, Nancy, for me to go on a trip to Pike Lake Lodge in Wisconsin. While there I met an eighth grade girl named Cheri, whom I thought was very cute. Nine and a half years later we were married.

I started out Methodist; then became a Presbyterian; and, because that cute little girl was a Lutheran, I am now at Salem.

We have four girls. Carrie lives in Milwaukee and works for the city. Carrie gets Packer and Brewer vs. Cubs tickets. Melanie and Jeff live in Somonauk. She does dog grooming, and he is an electrician. They gave us two very cute granddaughters—Kylee who just turned 16 and will drive you anywhere and Abby who is in seventh grade and on the computer all the time. Jenny and Eric live in Richmond, IL. She does computer work, and he is a carpenter. They gave us two more very cute granddaughters—Sammy just turned four and has a brand new little sister, Lillian Rose, who is almost 3 months old. Then there’s Sarah and Zack. They live in Dallas. When we retire, they will put us in a nursing home next to the Dallas Cowboys Stadium so I can watch the Cowgirls practice.

So here we are still doing a little farming, driving trucks and going to Salem.

Thanks and God bless, Jerry

JERRY DAVIS
