Foundation/Key stage 1ScienceLife in the CemeteryDiscover the amazinghabitats, food chains and food websthat thrive in woodland, grassland and scrubland, to learn about theplants and animals that call Arnos Valehome. Follow an activity trail throughthe site and understand the vital rolemini beasts play in our world throughthe clues you find on your way.

Stomping stories WalkaboutTake a story inspired walk on a trailaround Arnos Vale, discovering naturetrail clues along the way. Learn allabout the creatures that live on thesite and how their importance to the woodland ecosystem.

HistoryHistory Hunt Take an activity based history walkaround the site, discovering

fascinating historical facts,interpreting clues and learning aboutlocal history through the art andlanguage on graves. Children willdevelop vital historical skills includingchronology, historical terminology and using first hand evidence.

Key stage 2ScienceLife in the CemeteryExplore the amazinghabitats, food chainsand food webs thatthrive in the 45 acre

listed landscape of Arnos Vale. Learnabout living things that call Arnos Valehome through an activity trail throughthe site. Learners will gain knowledgeabout trees, plants, animals andinvertebrates through hands-onactivities and exploration.

HistoryMeet the VictoriansDiscover Bristol’s fascinating local

history through real storiesfrom beyond the grave.

Learn about some of Arnos Vale’sfamous residents and learn how theyhelped shape modern Bristol for both rich and poor.

WW1 – Lost not ForgottenUse the stories and stones in a siteexploration of those who fought,worked and experienced WW1, From VC’s to nurses, prisoners of war to conscientious objectors. The stories at Arnos Vale are coupledwith primary sources and hands-onactivities for an engaging learningexperience.

WW2 – Home and AwayThe personal stories of WW2 arediscovered through the monuments of people on the home front (blitz)and the service personnel who servedon the front lines through an activitybased site tour. Using real historicalresources and first hand evidence,learners will develop theirknowledge andunderstandingof the War.

GeographyMap-ItStudentsworktogether as a team usingtheir navigationskills to explore the cemetery using a compass, a blank map and theirskills of deduction. Through fieldwork,learners will create their own map,learn how to use a compass and usegeographical terms.

Key Stage 3&4Inspiring MindsA visit includes expert-led workshopsplus an opportunity for students toundertake supported independentinvestigations. The workshops areactive and engaging with a range ofskills explored on route. Designed toinspire students to develop their ownlearning, explore their own questionsand use independent thinking skills.

ScienceLife in the CemeteryStudents will use scientific methods to explore the habitats in the listedlandscape. They will undertakespecies surveys, study the contrastinghabitats andunderstand theamazing food websthat thrive in thewoodland, grasslandand scrubland.

HistoryLearners will develop vital historicalskills including chronology, historicalterminology and using first handevidence.

Meet the VictoriansBristol’s fascinating local history isexplored through primary sources and historical evidence. Students will learn about some of Arnos Vale’s

famous residents and will gainand understanding andappreciation of how they helpedshape Bristol.

Yourvisit

At Arnos Vale we want to make sureyour visit is as easy as possible fromthe time you book until the momentyou leave.

Lasting approximately half a day yourorganised visit will be overseen by our learning coordinator. Arnos Valeprovides both indoor and outsideareas for lunches as well as a securearea for your belongings alongsideaccessible toilet facilities.

Common Questions1. How much will it cost?A half day of organised activity costs from as little as £4 per student.All money goes towards realising the charitable aims of the Trust.

2. Is there an indoor lunch space? As an all weather venue Arnos Valehas both inside and outdoor spacesfor children to have lunch.

3. Do you have a risk assessment? We appreciate the need to ensureyour day runs as safely as possible. We have regularly updated riskassessments available online and on request.

4. What workshops do you offer?We have a selection of workshopsincluding History, Science andGeography. For more information look at our workshop section.

5. How long is theworkshop? We understand the need to make your day as hassle free as possible.Our supervisedworkshops last forapproximately an hour as part of your half day at Arnos Vale.

Your visitExample Itinerary at Arnos Vale10am – Short health and safety chat, store coats and bags andcomfort break.

10.15-11.15 – Chosen NationalCurriculum linked workshop witheducation expert.

11.15-11.30 – Short break.

11.30-12.30 – National curriculumlinked on-site activity lead by classteacher. Activity can be linked to the workshop or based on a differentcurriculum area. All resources and support material provided (Arnos Vale Education staff on site to support).

12.30-13.30 – Lunch break. Indoorand outdoor lunch space available or the local park is 5 minutes walkaway. (Option to end half day).

13.30-14.30 – Independentexploration time for the class; drawing resources,collecting bags and maps can be providedfree of charge.

14.30 – Depart.

Please note, up to 3 classescan be accommodatedduring a day. Timings andresources can be tailored forspecific schools.

What is Forest School?Forest School is an out of classapproach to learning, teachingdevelopmental skills in a woodlandenvironment

- The beautiful 45 acre listedlandscape of Arnos Vale is used tomotivate, promote self-esteem andengage children of all ages, abilitiesand learning styles through fun hands-on activities and skills ledopportunities.

Who can take part in Forest School?Forest school can be for any schoolkey stage, home-learners or pre-schoolers. Sessions can betailored for learners with disabilitiesand specific learning needs.

What do children do at ForestSchool?Forest School is made up of a widerange of experiences and adventures.These can include;

• Bush craft skills such as animal signtracking

• whittling and knife work (dependingon age)

• Fire lighting and cooking on fires.

Learners will enjoy a large range ofactivities that will connect them withthe environment including arts andcrafts, active games and sciencebased activities

Arnos Vale is a dedicated learningspace for schools. We are an allweather learning centre withclassroom sessions taken bothindoors and outside.

Arnos Vale provides schools with a dedicated lunch area and we alsohave an on-site cafe.

There are coach stop off points bythe main entrance gates and secureminibus parking on site.
