The perfect starting point: Gearbox position monitoring.

Movement is not always good for you. This is true, in particular, if the movement relates to the drive train of your WTG. Where fracturing of the main bearing remains undetected, the gearbox itself moves up to 9 mm towards the rear. In axial direction, this movement is restricted by the pedestal bearings. This is where the loads of the drive train is applied on the planet carrier bearings and therefore on your wallet.

The loads will damage the planet carrier bearings and therefore the entire gearbox. To ensure that the situation does not reach such aserious level, the position of the gearbox can be permanently monitored using two inductive proximity switches. If the position changes, a fault message is sent to the remote monitoring center immediately. The turbine will be automatically stopped and you always stay one step ahead of any movements with serious consequences.

Infinitely useful: The particle counter.

Although a major component like the gearbox is large and tan-gible it is, however, diffi cult to detect when potential problems are about to occur, as these often start, hardly noticeable, at minute levels. Problems can be caused by particles suspended in the gear oil, which at 0.003 mm are hardly larger than bacteria, tiny metal particles or movement of the gearbox by only a centimeter which can cause total failure.

Considerable experience is required to detect the fi rst indications and act accordingly. Availon has this experience and uses it to develop upgrades that prevent serious damage and considerably increase the service life of the gearbox. Kidney loop fi ltration and particle counters ensure that there is no “sand“ in the gearbox but, instead, clean oil at all times.

Clear competence and clean oil.

Three grains of salt have an approximate size of 350 μm. That is not very large, unless when particles of this size are found in the gear oil of a WTG. This can be an indication of wear, which without suitable countermeasures could lead to considerable damage and may require replacement of the gearbox. Fortunately, it is easy to also monitor the oil inside the gearbox.

The particle counter registers and counts all metal particles of asize of 350 μm and over in the main and bypass fl ow of the gear oil lubrication system. Where a signifi cant increase in particles is determined, an automatic warning message is sent to the remotemonitoring center. Often, minor repair suffices to remedy the causes and prevent serious damage. Where further tests (e.g. vibration analysis) show that a gearbox has to be replaced, the replacement can be at least planned and unnecessary downtimes can be avoided.

Permanent quality: Kidney loop filtration.

Gearboxes are often like life itself with inner values also being important. And in this case these relate, in particular, to the oil, as it is one of the most decisive factors for the service life of a gearbox. The design of many systems does, however, only allow a fi ltration of particles and oil aging products from a size of 10 μm onwards. And it is precisely for these systems that we have developed kidney loop fi ltration. The compact pump and fi lter unit siphons the oil from the lowest part of the gearbox. The oil is then cleaned in the unit and returned to the gearbox. Particles of 3 μm and greater are removed and the moisture dissolved in the oil is absorbed. The additives, on the other hand, remain dissolved in the gearbox oil. This ensures a constant fl ow of high-quality oil instead of expensive payments for frequent changes, as intervals can be extended to over 60 months.
