Antenna Alignment (using MPAD pointing aid)
Connect L-Band RX cable from transceiver to RX connector on the Idirect X5 modem.
Connect RJ45 connector to the
CONSOLE port of the Idirect X5 modem
& the other end to the GPS module on
the feed arm.
Connect the MPAD with the interconnection cable to the GPS module on the feedarm.
Power ON the GPS & Mpad (13 amp plug)
Power ON the Modem (the modem will take 1-2 minutes for Boot up)
“Modem Booting Please Wait” will
appear whilst the modem is booting

Once the Modem has booted then the MPAD2 will display the current AZ & EL position of
the mount & once the GPS has locked it will display a T-AZ & T-EL, the “T” standing for
target. The target AZ & EL will be the position of the satellite from your location. Where the
actual mount EL is derived from an inclinometer & therefore will be correct the AZ is derived
from a compass which will only be as accurate as the local magnetic influences allow & so
should be treated as a rough guide rather than an absolute.
Set the antenna so that the EL
& T-EL are the same.
Sweep the antenna in
azimuth in the direction of
the satellite (heading taken
from compass) until the signal
level is peaked on the MPAD
meter.
The MPAD will only lock up to the DVB-S2
outbound carrier for the HYLAS / Idirect system
Move the AZ & EL using the fine adjusters to
achieve the maximum signal strength.

Lock off the Azimuth and adjust the elevation to ensure maximium signal level is achieved.
Once maximium signal level has been achieved, POWER OFF the modem, unplug the MPAD
controller and pack away but leave the GPS unit connected to the modem as this will give
the modem your curent location. Connect the TX cable.
Re-apply power to the modem (boot up will take 1-2 miniutes)
Once you have green lights on RX, TX & Net the modem is ready for traffic.

Antenna Allignment (using i-Site)
1. Use http://www.dishpointer.com/ to set azimuth and elevation of antenna for HYLAS 1 (33.5°W - 23.5°el London) or HYLAS 2 (31°E - 24°el London)
2. Check that the correct TX polarity is selected on the TRIA. NB: you will need a 3mm Allen key to change it (a hex screwdriver will not work)
3. Plug the RX cable from the X5 modem to the RX port on the TRIA and power the modem
4. Connect the Ethernet cable from the modem to a computer which has iSite installed
5. Open iSite:
You will see:

8. Click Start. After a few seconds, the Current Signal Strength should read 0.30000 and you should hear an audible beep from the computer (make sure volume is turned up). With a 1m antenna you should achieve a signal strength between 15-19.0000.
9. Close the pointing aid, de-power the modem and connect the TX lead.
After re-powering (2-3 minutes) the RX and TX lights should be solid green.
If the TX light is off, there may be a problem with the location information…either an incorrect option file or no GPS signal (see below).
If the LAN light is solid green, then the modem is ‘in network’ and should be ready to use.
If it is flashing, there is a networking problem and you will need to call the support desk.

LOADING AN OPTION FILE
Having the correct option file is crucial for successful operation; they tell the modem the
correct TX & RX parameters for the particular satellite channel and also provide location
information, which is crucial, as the iDirect system relies on each modem in the network
having its own individual time-slot as to when it is able to transmit. The timing of each slot is
extremely critical and the path length of the signal from the earth’s surface has a significant
impact, hence each modem must know its exact position on the Earth’s surface for the
system to function correctly. If the information is wrong, a mis-match in signal timing will
occur and the modem will not be allowed to transmit.
There are two types of option file:
Static – intended for fixed terminals. The modem location Lat/Long information is
embedded into the file
Mobile – inputs location information from an external GPS receiver (X5 & X7 modems only)
The option files are generated by Avanti and can be pushed to the modem via the satellite
link (if you have RX lock) or can be emailed and entered manually by the user.
To load an option file:
1. Store the option file in a convenient place on your computer
NB: Make sure the option file is compatible with the modem firmware – it is possible
to ‘brick’ the modem if they are not!
2. Open iSite by following steps 3,4 & 5 in the ANTENNA SET-UP section

LOADING NEW FIRMWARE
Firmware is the ‘engine’ code for the modem. iDirect send out regular updates with bug
fixes, performance enhancements and new features. Firmware usually comes as two files:
A bsp file, such as evo_x3_x5_bsp-14.0.2.7.pkg
And an rmt file, such as evo_x3_x5_rmt-14.0.2.7.pkg
NB: It is important to load the bsp file before the rmt file
To load new firmware:
6. Store the firmware file in a convenient place on your computer
7. Open iSite by following steps 3,4 & 5 above
You should see this:
8. Click on the Download Package icon
9. Locate the bsp from your computer directory and click Open, then Start
10. Once completed, load the rmt file
NB: It may take several minutes for the download, which ends with a completed
message. You must NOT de-power/re-start the unit until BOTH files have been loaded
followed by the correct option file.
11. Power cycle the modem.
