It’s their right. They deserve to be safe.AVDA attorneys and paralegals provide free legal representation for survivors of abuse for protective orders, divorce, child custody and child support cases within Harris County. Protective orders have no income requirements, while divorce and child custody/support cases are accepted for survivors with low to moderate income. Cases with exceptional merit (such as high lethality) may also be accepted, regardless of income. AVDA provides safety planning, referral, and emergency funding for rent, utilities, food, transpor-tation and clothing. AVDA also has train-ing and education funds to promote self-sufficiency.

B I P P Battering Intervention & Prevention Program

It’s their choice to break the cycle.AVDA provides psycho-educational counseling for individuals who have been abusive in the greater Houston area (Harris, Galveston, Montgomery, Fort Bend and Brazoria counties) through its nationally acclaimed BIPP. AVDA’s BIPP is the first in Texas to be fully accredited, and its 18-week program has low-cost group sessions with a strong emphasis on the impact of abuse on children. AVDA’s BIPP was highlighted by the Centers for Disease Control as one of four model BIPPs across the nation, and found that 80 percent of BIPP graduates did not re-assault within 30 months of program completion.

It’s their future. Make it count.Approximately one in three teenagers between the ages of 12 and 21 will experi-ence violence in dating relationships. AVDA works with at-risk youth across the greater Houston area to provide prevention and intervention to break the cycle of violence in their lives. In addition to extensive programming within the juvenile justice system, AVDA provides presentations, workshops and programs across the community to heighten awareness about domestic violence. Topics include domes-tic abuse prevention, healthy relationships, dating violence, workplace violence, health care responses to abuse, veterans domestic abuse risks and more.

CO U N S E L I N G S E RV I C E S

It’s their life. They deserve better.AVDA’s counselors provide counseling for adults and children in individual or group setting, providing supportive guidance for those affected by abuse. Its education-based support group for survivors, with special emphasis on the impact of abuse on children, is open to voluntary and mandated clients, and is offered at no cost to the client. All ser-vices are offered in English and Spanish. Counseling is available for problems such as depression, anxiety, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, sexual victimization, and parenting concerns.

AVDA’S MISSION

is to end family violence by advocating for the safety and self-determination of victims, promoting accountability for abusers and fostering a community-wide response to abuse.

Page 4: AVDA Annual Report 2013-2014

Domestic violence has figured prominently in the news this past year. This focused attention provides us with an educational opportunity to help deepen the conversa-tion about domestic abuse. Unfortunately, most victims continue to fearfully suffer alone, and in silence. With your help, AVDA assists victims in escaping the abuse, and in rebuilding their lives to truly begin again. AVDA also recognizes that offenders must stop the abuse, and pro-vides abusers with the tools to end the cycle of violence and control.

AVDA staff worked diligently during 2013 and 2014 to provide transformative services for individuals and families experiencing the trauma of abuse. Over this two-year period, AVDA provided 3,122 survivors with legal services to pro-mote safety and self-sufficiency – and to sever the ties which bind them to their abusers. AVDA’s Battering Intervention and Prevention Program (BIPP) provided psycho-educational counseling, focused on accountability, to 2,133 men and 236 women.

AVDA underwent significant rebranding in 2014. Keeping true to its mission, the AVDA logo was designed with a new tag-line “End Abuse / Begin Again.” The logo reflects AVDA’s work to reassemble shat-tered lives by ending the cycle of violence, with renewed hope of an abuse-free future.

AVDA clients tell the story best. Tangela, a US Army Gulf War veteran, who sought a divorce from her abuser through AVDA’s Legal Advocacy Program said “AVDA gave me hope and assurance and held my hand through this devastating situation. I didn’t feel alone.”

Since its inception, AVDA has sought to address the needs of the Houston community, identifying gaps in service and seeking to fill those gaps, either inter-nally or through collaboration. Thanks to the support of generous foundations, AVDA has grown to add new programs to increase services to victims and youth. Beginning in 2013, the Dan L. Duncan Family provided funding to create AVDA’s Counseling and Outreach Program, spe-cializing in reaching our community’s underserved at-risk youth. The program is thriving.

LETTER FROM OUR LEADERSHIP

Transforming Lives Through Service

Page 5: AVDA Annual Report 2013-2014

In 2014, Houston Endowment, Inc. provided funding to launch AVDA’s advocacy pro-gram to serve victims who earn too much to qualify for AVDA’s free legal services, but not enough to afford their own legal counsel. To ensure the program’s future financial sustainability, AVDA reached out to Houston legendary trial attorney and powerful voice in our legal system, Joe Jamail. Through his leadership and philan-thropy, the Joseph D. Jamail Endowment Fund was established to permanently endow an AVDA attorney position to protect women who have been battered that cannot afford legal representation.

AVDA is extremely fortunate to have the generous support of its community, as evi-denced by the outpouring of significant contributions to its annual Home Safe Home gala. Critical operating funds are raised annually by these events. The 2014 gala raised more money than ever before, and led to the creation of the annual Joseph D. Jamail Award for Justice.

As we review the hard work, commitment and accomplishments of our staff and board leadership, we couldn’t be more inspired by the very real impact we are making in the lives of families, and to the peacefulness of our community. With your continued support, we will continue to change lives in significant, transformative ways. Please follow AVDA’s work on our website at avda-tx.org, Facebook at AVDA-TX and on Twitter @AVDA_TX to follow our progress in meeting our mission, and to be a part of the solution in whatever ways speak to you.

Sincerely,

Page 7: AVDA Annual Report 2013-2014

AVDA is a unique organization in the Houston community that provides life-changing services to both victims of abuse as well as abusers. The organiza-tion’s sole goal is to end the cycle of violence within families, through legal advocacy and support for victims, batter-ing intervention programs for abusers, and counseling and prevention for community youth and adults.

O U R FO U N D I N G A N D L EG AC YAVDA was founded in 1980 by the National Council of Jewish Women – Greater Houston Section as a non- residential domestic violence center to provide resources for the thousands of battered women in need of legal advo-cacy. Over the past 34 years, AVDA’s Legal Advocacy Program staff has pro-vided legal advocacy and representation for more than 80,000 domestic violence victims who otherwise would have fallen through the cracks in our family law system.

In 1984, the PIVOT Project (now BIPP –Battering Intervention and Prevention Program) was created to provide interven-tion and accountability for more than 12,000 perpetrators of abuse by year-end 2014. In 2009, AVDA’s BIPP became the first in the state to become fully accredited by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, and is one of the largest BIPP

programs in Texas. AVDA also played a role in establishing a system of state BIPP accreditation, helping to bring minimum standards and consistency to battering intervention programs statewide.

AVDA was instrumental in the establish-ment of the Houston Police Department’s Family Violence Unit and the Family Crim-inal Law Division of the Harris County Dis-trict Attorney’s Office. AVDA continues to be a strong leader and collaborator in the community response to abuse, working to improve restorative services to those impacted by domestic violence.

D E V E LO P I N G P RO G R A M SSignificant growth was experienced in 2013 and 2014, leading to increased service through program expansion. In response to community and client needs, AVDA launched its Counseling and Outreach Program, with the addition of a Trauma Counselor and Youth & Outreach Special-ist. AVDA also recognized the need to provide legal services to the “working poor,” resulting in the expansion of the Legal Advocacy Program which will assist those “caught in the gap” between too much income to qualify for legal aid and insufficient funds to afford legal counsel. This program began accepting clients in December 2014.
