Opening Hymn on

Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time Whatsoever You Do

* What so ever you do to the least of my people That you do unto me

When I was hungry, you gave me to eat; When I was thirsty, you gave me to drink.

Now enter into the home of my Father. *What so ever you do to the least of my people

That you do unto me. When I was homeless you opened your door;

When I was naked you gave me your coat. Now enter into the home of my Father.

*What so ever you do to the least of my people That you do unto me

When I was weary, you helped me find rest; When I was anxious, you calmed all my fears.

Now enter into the home of my Father. *What so ever you do to the least of my people

That you do unto me.

First Reading

Blessed is he whose fault is taken away Whose sin s covered.

Blessed the man to whom the Lord imputes not guilt, In whose spirit there is no guile.

*I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble, and You fill me with the joy of salvation. Then I acknowledged my sin to you,

My guilt I covered not. I said, ”I confess my faults to the Lord,” And you took away the guilt of my sin.

*I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble, and You fill me with the joy of salvation.

Great is our Lord and mighty in power; To his wisdom there is no limit. The Lord sustains the lowly;

The wicked he casts to the ground. *I turn to you Lord in time of trouble, and

You fill me with the joy of salvation. Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, you just;

Exult, all you upright of heart. *I turn to you Lord in time of trouble, and

You fill me with the joy of salvation.

Second Reading A reading from the first Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians Brothers and sisters, whether you eat or drink, or what-ever you do, do everything for the glory of God. Avoid giving offense, whether to the Jews or Greeks or the church of God, just as I try to please everyone in every

Cont. way, not seeking my own benefit but that of the many, that they may be saved. Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God

The Lord be with you. And with your spirit.

4 Proclaim the Love

Profession of Faith

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from True God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (At the words that follow, up to and including “and became man”all bow.) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen

Fast and Abstinence Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a per-son is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catho-lic Church from age 14 onwards. ASH WEDNESDAY IN 2021….. We have had a year filled with different ways of living and praying. There are few-er people in church. No water in the font. Less singing. No coffee and doughnuts on the way home. Yet we still pray. Instead of distributing ashes as a cross on the forehead—unsafe in this time of the COVID19 pandemic—we can still receive them by sprinkling on the top of the head (permitted by our Catholic Church’s ritual rules respecting an ancient liturgical prac-tice). We may look a little cleaner. Re-gardless, we can still repent—and believe in the Gospel! We will still bear ashes home to begin our Lenten disciplines and practices. Come to Ash Wednesday, Feb-ruary 17, at 10 am at St. Denis and 6:15 pm at St. Mary. Parish Survey Ave Maria Parish will be participating in a parish survey about discipleship conduct-ed by the Catholic Leadership Institute! We need your help! Please help us by participating in a 10-13 minute survey online. We will give you a link to the sur-vey and will ask you to reflect on your own spiritural growth and enable you to pro-vide feedback on our parish’s efforts to help you grow. All responses will be confi-dential and the parish will only receive information about the community as whole. We are trying to get the highest response rate possible. This information will be invaluable as we plan for the future and strive to be the best disciples we can be. We will receive the results this spring/summer at which time we will share what

we have learned with the entire parish. Dear Parish Family, Hearing is not the same thing as listening. In today’s gospel, we see a good listener, Jesus. We also see a bad listener, the leper. Being a good listener, Jesus heard past the awkward phrase “If you wish, you can make me scream” and heard a prayer for healing. Jesus knew that the man was not just asking for relief from a physical malady. Lepers were outcasts of the community. In order to reenter society, in order to go home, and greet his family and friends, he needed first to be ritually purified by the priest. Listening to the man and realiz-ing that reentering society was as important as physical healing, Jesus reminded him to go the priest and to do what is prescribed in the law of Moses. Jesus reunites the leper to God by listening to his prayer, especially the unspoken part of it. Jesus reunited the leper into the community by reminding him to follow what the law prescribed. Jesus saves in order for us to love, honor and obey God. Jesus saves us so that we might obey him and so that through our witness of glorifying God in everything we do, others might be saved. By obeying Jesus, we bring others to Christ. Listening can convey a sense of obeying. The leper, however, neither lis-tened nor obeyed. Because of this, he made it more difficult for people to come to Christ. The only thing Jesus asked was that the leper “tell no one anything!” But what did the leper do? He told everyone everything and it “impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly. He remained outside in deserted places.” Be-cause the leper told everybody what hap-pened. Jesus switched places with him. It was now Jesus who, like the leper, could not go into the towns and villages. The leper’s disobedi-ence made things more difficult for Jesus. In the early church, candidates for baptism were called, “audientes,” which means “listeners.” Certainly, our baptism suggests that we have been saved to listen to the Word of God and to the example of Jesus and His saints. Saint Paul, in the second reading, said it well: “Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God. Avoid giving offense, whether to the Jews or Greeks or the church of God.” We are to imi-tate Christ by listening to him. Christ’s good-ness is all around us, giving us reason to glorify God. Jesus saves in order for us to love, honor and obey God. Jesus saves us so that we might obey him and glorify God in everything we do. The Good News of this Sunday’s scrip-ture is that God saves us to listen to Him. (hprweb.com) God Bless you all! Sister Maria Inviolata, SMDG

God’s Kingdom As we continue our sacramental

preparation for Penance, the chil-dren and their parents reflected on Christ the King, Jesus was chosen by

God the Father to establish a new kingdom. Jesus invites everyone to turn away from sin and make Him

the King of their hearts. Jesus’ King-dom is in heaven and on Earth. Our King wants us to enter into the King-

dom of God which is the world of love, peace and justice that is in Heaven and is still being built on

Earth.

Conversion is responding to God’s love and forgiveness. It is turning

away from sin. God’s love and grace moves us to conversion and makes us want to be better people. We

change and become more like Jesus. Thus God’s Kingdom spreads on

earth through our good actions, atti-tudes and love. Our happiness each day comes from living as members

of God’s Kingdom.

Reflection: Jesus, You are my King. I ask You to send Your Holy Spirit to give me the strength to admit my

weaknesses and failings as a mem-ber of your Kingdom. “Jesus I give

my heart to You. Help me to live as a sign of Your love.”

LIFE AND WITNESS OF MARY; Lourdes: Story of Faith, Science, & Miracles “Bernard Guillaument, a non-Christian French journalist, is assigned the job of doing a story on Lourdes in the late 1990s. Just before he leaves For Lourdes, Bernard learns that his wife is pregnant. However, he is not told that this pregnancy could put her life at risk—and that doctors are suggesting an abortion. While researching for his report on Lourdes, Bernard comes across the pages of an old family manu-script. The manuscript was written by his ancestor, Henri Guillaument, a positivist scientist and nonbeliever who met Bernadette at Lourdes in 1858, a meeting which profoundly affected Henri and forced him to re-consider the miracles performed following the appari-tions of the Madonna of Lourdes. One of the most im-portant miracles H. Giullaument had to reconsider was the healing of his wife Claire, who had been on her death bed as a result of tuberculosis, and was com-pletely restored by the miraculous waters of the grotto in which Bernadette saw Our Lady. Saint of the Week—February 21st, 2021

Saint Peter Damian Maybe because he was orphaned and had been treated shabbily by one of his brothers, Peter Damian was very good to the poor. It was the ordinary thing for him to have a poor person or two with him at table and he liked to minister personally to their needs. Peter escaped poverty and the neglect of his own brother when is other brother, who was archpriest of Ravenna, took him under his wing. His brother sent him to good schools and Peter became a professor. Already in those days, Peter was very strict with him-self. He wore a hair shirt under his clothes, fasted rigorously and spent many hours in prayer. Soon, he decided to leave his teach-ing and give himself completely to prayer with the Benedictines of the reform of Saint Romuald at Fonte Avellana. They lived two monks to a hermitage. Peter was so eager to pray and slept so little that he soon suffered from severe insomnia. He found he had to use some prudence in taking care of himself. When he was not praying, he studied the Bible. He asked often to be allowed to retire as cardinal-bishop of Ostia, and finally Pope Alexander II consented. Peter was happy to become once again just a monk. . With the monks gathered around him saying the Divine Office, he died on February 22, 1072. In 1828, he was declared a Doctor of the Church.
