“THE EMBROIDERY SECRETS WITHIN THE VICTORIAN ALTAR FRONTAL” WITH ELIZABETH BOND

The white frontal is well known amongst the congregation of the church of St. Nicholas in Kingsey, Buckinghamshire. The frontal is attributed to Georgiana Wykeham, who was the squire’s wife when the church was built and consecrated in 1893. The project to remount the frontal came to fruition in the summer of 2016. The project was supported by people in the village, with Kingsey resident and Royal School of Needlework graduate Elizabeth Bond as the lead stitcher. The church was opened for five weekends over the summer; visitors learned about the church and village history and were offered the chance to add a stitch to the work. Elizabeth’s talk charts the progress of the work and the secrets concealed within the frontal. www.thesmartstitcher.co.uk

"A LIFE IN TEXTILES” WITH CAROLINE MARRIOTT Caroline started her textile career by crocheting little stripy jumpers for fellow students at University. For many years Caroline combined her job as a teacher with developing her own work, selling it in shops and at craft events. Now a popular tutor, Caroline enjoys working in stitch, weaving, rag rugging and beading, the unifying factor being her use of rich, vibrant colour. Caroline will be returning to AVEG to run a day workshop on July 1st; a date worth noting! http://www.carolinemarriott.com/index.php

Saturday 10th June 2017 (2nd Saturday; MEETING 2.30 p.m.)

"TAPESTRY WEAVING; THEN AND NOW" WITH MATTY SMITH

Matty Smith sees the process of tapestry weaving as a form of textile painting. Whilst much of her work draws on observation, she is increasingly extending her ideas into more conceptual pieces, 3-D weaving and exploring collaboration with traditional artists through a re-interpretation of their work. Matty’s talk will provide us with a short overview of the history of tapestry weaving, an introduction to the work of contemporary tapestry artists and an insight into the ways she approaches her own work. The talk will be enhanced by illustrations of tapestry woven by notable tapestry weavers and actual tapestries woven by Matty herself. Matty is co-founder of Weaversbazaar and a member of the British Tapestry Group and American Tapestry Alliance. www.weaversbazaar.com

"MY JOURNEYS WITH A SKETCH BOOK, CAMERA AND NEEDLE” WITH POLLY WOOLSTONE

Oxford-based mixed media artist Polly Woolstone’s work reflects her travels – from country lanes in the UK and Ireland to her many visits to India and Indochina. Working in mixed media combines her love of colour, texture and mark-making. She is still exploring and her talk reflects the creative journey she has been on. Trained in illustration and graphic design at Canterbury Art College, and subsequently qualifying as a teacher in Bristol, Polly taught Art and Design and Textiles for over 30 years in Cheshire, ending up as Head of a Performing Arts School. This allowed her no time to do her own work other than holiday sketchbooks! During her time as Head Polly managed to persuade her Governors to give her a term’s sabbatical to travel. She went to Australia, New Zealand, cycled across Cambodia, worked in schools in Thailand and ended up in India, which has become a constant source of inspiration for her work. Since retiring Polly has visited Burma, Morocco and Cuba. She has returned to India several times, often travelling by bike and always with a camera and sketchbook. Polly now has the time to take a journey with her own work!
