The meeting was hosted by attorney Russel Lazega of Florida Insurance Advocates - a 15- attorney, statewide insurance litigation boutique represent- ing hundreds of medical providers and consumers with issues involving in- surance companies. Lazega and his team of insurance industry spe- cialists work on a con- tingency basis and in most instances, fees are recovered from insur- ance companies. Both Lazega and Finkelstein serve on the Board of Directors of the Holocaust Documentation and Educa- tion Center, a nondenominational organiza- tion founded 32 years ago. Currently the Center Board is spearheading initiatives to build the first South Florida bilingual Eng- lish and Spanish Holocaust Museum, so that all our children will learn how hatred, preju- dice and bigotry can lead to genocide when there is silence. Bob Hollander of Brown & Brown Insur- ance, standing in for AMC Chair Cliff Schul- man of Weiss, Serota, Helfman, helped welcome business and community leaders to Christine Lee’s at Gulfstream Park, where Finkelstein emphasized, “This incredible country has come a long way from the days it shouted to the world in the Declaration of Independence ‘All men are created equal.’ Today, we stand closer to those promises being fulfilled and delivered to all people than in any other time. “Due to current economic conditions, the promise of the right to counsel and equal jus- tice is seriously at risk of disappearing. As we have to tighten our belts, we must ask ourselves, ‘Is justice something we are will- ing to do on the cheap – or does justice have an overarching importance because it defines who we are as a people? If there isn’t equal and fair justice than the promise of America is hollow. “As we get closer to this thing called ‘jus- tice’ we can all be proud to stand anywhere in the world and say, ‘I’m an American and I believe that all of God’s children are equal; and justice is not for sale.’ Those who toil in law enforcement and the justice system de- serve admiration and respect. Never doubt that we have so much to be proud of - but never doubt that the job isn’t even close to being done.” Humbly discussing his TV fame, Finkel- stein explained, “Help Me Howard is really an outgrowth of being a Public Defender and an American. I get to help people and not charge then anything – does it get any cooler than that?” To contact attorney Russel Lazega of Florida Insurance Advocates, phone: 754- 263-4252 or visit lazegalaw.com. Sue is loaded... money coming out of herears. She earned it the hard way, sort of; herhusband was hit by a truck when crossingthe street.

She hit the jackpot. The guywas overloaded with money inthe millions class. Her interest inthe money was thousands aweek.

She went through the mourn-ing phase for awhile but her heartwasn’t in it since they hadstopped liking each other a longtime ago but she fronted his cor-porations they had.

Soon, she became the new chase in townand all the smart guys started figuringangles on how to get to her. They all forgotthat she didn’t get there with shortsupstairs.

After a good look around, she spots themacho man: Duke. All the women in herclub are crazy for him. Real outdoor type. There’s only one thing she isn’t happyabout... is that he is 10 years younger andchases the young ones.

She makes the pitch anyway. So peopletalk, who cares.

They want to say she bought him? Fine. She suggests that they play doubles in

the club tournament. See how they can playas a team. It goes good real good.

They go out a for dinner andsplit the dab. She wants to payfor a weekend on her boat so thathe won’t have to spend anymoney.

They go away and he turns outto be vigorous, very much so.Makes her feel young again.

If her money makes it easierfor them both, then she doesn’t

mind. She has the money, he has the drive and

energy. She keeps young and he stayshappy.

Now they finally reach the height of allthings at the club.

They won the big shuffleboard champi-onship in doubles. They really did a job onthe competition. Hey she’s 87 and he’s ayoungster of 79, don’t forget they are clubchamps.

Now that’s living on the high note.

It hurts when you find out that some-one you care about stops caring about you.It is disappointing, upsetting and startling,to say the least. It is normal to have expec-tations that their feelings will remain thesame towards you. It is normal to makeassumptions about the nature of their feel-ings and about the relationship. It is normalto feel sad and unhappy when you becomeaware of their change of heart.

When someone you care about lets youknow by words or actions that you nolonger hold a special place in their heart orlife, they are letting you down. You feel it.It can prick your heart or it can break yourheart. It depends on the severity or the grav-ity of their actions.

You probably didn’t do anything tocause their feelings to diminish. Even ifyou did, you probably didn’t do it inten-

tionally. You are probably unaware of whytheir feelings changed. But, that is irrele-vant at this point. What is relevant is howyou are going to handle the situation, notjust outwardly but inwardly. How are yougoing to place it in the context of your life? What thoughts will you think and whatfeelings will you allow?

Losing your value or importance tosomeone does not mean that you are notvaluable and important. It simply meansthat they have changed and their needs havechanged. They no longer need you or wantyou in the same way. Put their rejection inperspective, you simply misjudged andmiscalculated their feelings for you. It’s notyou, it’s them. Don’t take it to heart. Don’tanalyze it too much. Don’t dwell on theirnegative traits. Don’t become more guard-ed, in your relationships, as a result. Let itgo just the way you let the pain from a fin-ger prick go. Spend more time with thosewho do care about you and value you. It isimportant to keep your own loving and giv-ing nature.

On November 22, 1963, Vice PresidentLyndon B. Johnson became president upon theassassination of John F. Kennedy. The entiresituation of Johnson assuming the presidencyfrom Kennedy, according to historian RobertA. Caro, was ironic. The Kennedy’s (JFK andhis brother Bobby, the Attorney General) hadcompletely lost confidence in Johnson as VicePresident and excluded him from importantissues, conferences and discussions. Bobbydespised Johnson, calling him a liar. At time ofKennedy’s assassination, Bobby had been urg-ing his brother to drop Johnson from the forth-coming 1964 presidential ticket.

Of extreme importance to Kennedy wasthe passage of the pending civil rights bill, however, Southern Senators had “hopelesslylog-jammed” the bill. Johnson, the formerSenate Majority Leader from Texas, had oneof the worst voting records on major civilrights bills.

A few days after the burial of Kennedy, the world was anxious to hear Johnson’s firstaddress to Congress. Southern Senators urgedJohnson not to even mention the civil rightsbill. Johnson spoke slowly and carefullybefore Congress, not accepting the advice ofhis Southern Senators. He began, “No memo-rial oration or eulogy could more eloquentlyhonor President Kennedy’s memory than theearliest possible passage of the civil rights billfor which he fought so long. We have talkedlong enough in this country about equal rights. It is now time to write the next chapter and towrite it in the books of law.” The massiveapplause came from everyone in the Chamber, except from the Southern Senators whoopposed the civil rights bill. Johnson, knownas the Master of the Senate, was a vote count-er and played on the strengths and weaknessesof each Senator. Johnson said, “As Senateleader, I had to be careful…but, I alwaysvowed that if I had the power I’d make sureevery Negro had the same chance as everywhite man. Now I have it. And now I’m goingto use it.” While honoring Kennedy, “Johnsongrasped the reins of the presidency withsupreme mastery,” refused to compromise andpushed through the greatest civil rights bill inAmerican history.

The Subaru Impreza seems to improvewith age and the fourth-generation of 2012versions of the four-door and five-doorcompact are more dynamic in styling andhave an all-new, more efficient powertrain.

Available in Base, Premium, SportPremium, Limited and Sport Limited models, the new Impreza is powered by a new 148-hpBoxer engine and comes with a choice of afive-speed manual transmission or theenhanced, second-generation LineartronicCVT (continuously variable transmission). The powertrain combination (with CVT)delivers an impressive 27/36 mpg.

The new 2.0-liter Boxer engine is slight-ly more responsive than the 2.5-liter engineit replaces, thanks to a lighter vehicleweight and when equipped with the newCVT. This is a more compact version of thecontinuously variable transmission thatdebuted in the current generation of the

Subaru Legacy and Outback models.Unlike a conventional automatic transmis-sion, which uses fixed gear ratios, a CVTprovides infinite variability between thehighest and lowest available ratios with nodiscernable steps or shifts. The CVT con-tinuously and smoothly adapts to perform-ance demand, helping to keep the engine inits most efficient operating range.

Impreza Premium, Sport and Limitedmodels with the CVT also have a six-speedmanual mode with steering wheel paddleshifters, which allow the driver to controlthe transmission via six pre-set ratios.

The 2012 Impreza models have a 36 per-cent improvement in combined fuel econo-my (automatic transmission) over earlierversions, as well as more room inside, betterhandling and more refinement. New ameni-ties, high-line trim levels, infotainment tech-nology and higher-grade interior materialsalso contribute to the improved Impreza. And every Impreza is equipped as standardwith Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive.

The combination of a longer wheelbaseand redesigned door and roof trim and frontseats allows for more room in passenger andcargo areas. The wheelbase grows about aninch to 104.1 inches, while overall vehicle

length and width remain the same for bothsedan and five-door models. However, redesigned door panels allow for increasedhip and shoulder room, while rear seat pas-sengers gain nearly two inches of legroom.Sedan trunk room and five-door cargo roomalso are increased, and the five-door nowhas a completely flat load floor with thestandard 65/35 split rear seatbacks folded.

The windshield is more raked than in theprevious Impreza, with the bottom of the Apillar moved 7.9 inches forward, allowingfor a front door opening nearly five incheslonger for easier entry and exit. Higher hip

points and a lower, flatter instrument panel, along with larger side mirrors, contribute tobetter visibility from within the cabin.

On the inside, there are richer lookingappointments and details, including soft-touch materials for the dashboard, door trimand center console armrest.Base price onthe 2012 Subaru Impreza is $17,495.

Hip and knee replacements, introduced inthe 1960s, are considered among the mostimportant medical advances in the 20th cen-tury.There are new joint replacements avail-

able. “They’re much more durable than theold ones so the need for revision surgerieslater in life is greatly reduced,” noted Dr.Michael Koonin.Every case is different, but in general, Dr.

Koonin said that joint replacements are con-sidered if the patient is experiencing func-tional limitations that restrict not just workand recreation but the ordinary activities ofdaily living; if pain is not relieved by con-servative treatments such as medications orphysical therapy; if there’s significant stiff-ness in the joint; or if x-rays show advancedarthritis or other problems.Today, limited incision surgery gives or-

thopedic surgeons the ability, in many cases,to replace the affected joint through a smallerincision, minimizing trauma to the surround-ing muscle tissue leading to a speedier recov-ery.Today, joint replacements can last a very

long time and the need for revision surgeryhas been greatly reduced, and there are vir-tually no restrictions in activity after surgery.Dr. Koonin, an alumnus of University of

Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South

Africa, completed his orthopedic training atAlbert Einstein College of Medicine, Mon-tefiore Hospital and Medical Center in NewYork. The team at the Orthopedic Care Center

consists of eight highly- trained and experi-enced orthopedic surgeon specialists. Thecenter has been established for many yearsat 21000 N.E. 28TH Ave., on the campus ofAventura Hospital and Medical Center. For more information, call (305) 937-1999

For those of us who call South Floridahome, it is sometimes easy to take the con-cept of a cultural melting pot for granted. Here you’ll find almost every nationality, race, color and ethnicity you can imagineand quite frankly, some you probably don’teven realize exist!Without packing a suitcase or pulling out

my passport, the past few weeks have beenfull of experiences usually reserved for over-seas excursions. In 2008 I traveled to Beijing, China to

cover the Olympic games for NBC’s TheOlympic Zone. Our journalism teams met in-credible athletes and also had the opportunityto experience Chinese culture. I have incred-ible memories from that month! I recentlyhad the pleasure of enjoying another slice ofChinese culture, but this time right here athome, thanks to South Florida’s ShandongAssociation.Shandong is the second largest province

in China; it is an economic, cultural and so-cial hub. It is the birthplace of revered Chi-nese thinker, Confucius. The local ShandongAssociation; a civil and cultural organizationhosted the Confucius Mid-Autumn festivalon the campus of FIU and invited me toserve as co-host of the event. I had thechance to once again get a glimpse of Chi-

nese culture. China’s Deputy Consul Gen-eral even traveled from Houston to join inthe celebration! The next week, I traveled to Africa. Hav-

ing spent ten days in Nairobi earlier this yearworking on a production project, I gained agreater appreciation for the Mother Land. And while I don’t know which African na-tion my ancestors come from, there is an in-ternal connection which cannot be denied. So it was once again my honor to be in the

audience at Florida International Universityas the mayor of the City of Miami Gardensperformed the swearing-in ceremony for citycouncilman member, Dr. Erhabor Ighodaro. He is the first Nigerian-born individual tohold a councilman position in any SouthFlorida city. Congratulations to Dr. Ighodaroand his family! The event included a mov-ing performance by the University’s choir, atraditional dance and drum presentation anda libation ceremony performed by Dr. Igho-daro’s uncle; a world renowned NigerianHigh Priest who traveled from Australia tohonor his nephew. Next time you go to buy groceries, bring your “diet detective” magnifyingglass to enlarge nutrition labels and ensurewhat you’re choosing is smart to put in yourcart. Items you may think are “healthy” canbe really high in sugar, fat, sodium and calo-ries that can sabotage healthy eating andweight management goals. TTrraacckk DDoowwnn LLeeaanneerr CChhooiicceess:: Instead ofground beef, choose chicken or turkey – butmake sure it says “white meat” to really cutthe fat content. Sliced chicken or turkeybreast are also preferable choices comparedto processed deli meats that are high in sodi-um and nitrates. Rather than “filet mignon” try “filet of fish”(non-breaded of course) for a great sourceof lean protein. Orange Roughy, in thefreezer section at Publix, is a light, whitefish ideal for preparing quick and easyhealthful recipes. Egg whites are anotherlean source of protein that are very versatileand conducive to mixing in veggies, leanmeats and low-fat cheeses. UUnnccoovveerr HHiiddddeenn SSuuggaarrss:: Yogurt, oatmeal, whole grain cereals and vitamin watersound like diet-friendly choices, but uponcloser inspection, you’ll discover “magni-fied” amounts of sugar. Fruit sweetenedyogurts as well as flavored instant oatmeal, brazen raisin brans making deceptivelyhealthy claims and nutrient enhanced waterscan all have as much sugar as temptingcandy bars at checkout lines. Low sugaralternatives such as plain oatmeal, fat-freeor Greek yogurt, Vitaminwater-0 and wholegrain cereals with less than 3 grams of sugarper serving are better choices that can helpyou achieve “sweet dieting success.” CClluueess ffoorr CCaarrbbss:: Carbohydrates are essen-tial for a balanced diet – but not all are cre-ated equal. Toss white pastas, white rice, white potatoes and white breads high on theglycemic index and opt for brown rice,Ezekiel bread, quinoa, sweet potatoes, oat-meal and whole grain pastas made withspelt, kemut or rice.

SSuupppplleemmeenntt SSoollvveerrss:: Most mainstreamsupermarkets now have an aisle dedicatedto energy bars and protein shakes. Thesekind of supplements used to be purchasedmostly by athletes and bodybuilders – butnow, many busy people are using bars andshakes as snacks and meal replacements –even if they never exercise at all. While it’salways preferable to eat “real food “ in theform of a healthful meal or snack, if you’regoing to have a bar or shake “on-the-go” -be sure to go with the ones that truly arehigh in protein and not packed with sky-high sugar grams…some have as much as19 grams! DDeesssseerrtt aanndd SSnnaacckk SSuurrvveeiillllaannccee:: Even themost die-hard dieters want to have some-thing sweet, salty and crunchy every nowand then. But don’t be fooled by diet-derail-ers like yogurt raisins, veggie chips andcaramel rice cakes. Even frozen yogurt canhave as much sugar per serving as icecream. Great “snack attack” choices inmoderate portions include almonds, wal-nuts, air-popped popcorn, MHP Power-Pakprotein pudding (available at GNC), freshfruit, sugar-free Jello, and now - instead ofice cream, you can satisfy your sweet toothwith a lot less fat and calories thanks to theamazing Yonanas machine. It makescreamy, delicious frozen treats, using onlyfrozen fruit, that looks, tastes and feels likesoft-serve ice cream in seconds! Visityonanas.com (available at Bed Bath &Beyond).

Okay, it’s that time again –October in a presidentialelection year. Maybe I

should expect that, at least untilNovember, I’m not going to getthrough a nightly newscast withoutat least a dozen or so politicalcommercials cautioning that a vote forone candidate is a vote for tripled taxesand a vote for the other will send BigBird straight to a KFC fryer.I get it, that’s politics. But when our

justice system gets political that’swhen we all need to worry.30 Years ago, Florida had a political

high court and with that came spectac-ular political scandals includingcharges of litigant-funded gamblingjunkets; bribery and case fixing forcampaign donors. In response, Floridastopped electing its Supreme Courtand empowered the Governor toappoint Justices with the appointmentterms renewed by “merit retention”elections every 6 years. The systemwas a model that shielded courts fromhaving politics dictate justice-systemdecision-making while maintainingaccountability.Fast-forward 30 years and politics is

again trampling the notion of a fair andindependent judiciary. Eyeing an

opportunity to replace 3 “NO”votes with 3 “YES” votes andremove prickly constitutionalroadblocks, Governor Scott and thestate Republican Party (with financialhelp from a pair of Kansas oil and gasbillionaires) have launched Florida’sfirst ever party-sponsored initiative tooust and replace Supreme Courtjustices. This time, though thecampaign isn’t about the integrity orcompetence of the judges (in fact a barsurvey shows exceptional approvalratings between 89% - 92% for each ofthe justices). The fight this time isabout who will influence the future ofFlorida’s judiciary.I for one say, let’s leave politics to

the politicians, leave the Muppets toFrank Oz and leave our high court inits capable hands.

The Association Law Group is pleased toannounce that Howard Weinberg of Aven-tura is commencing his 25th year of practic-ing law and providing pro bono communityservice in Miami-Dade County.

It has been quite a varied and interestingcareer for Howard since receiving his LawDegree from the Boston University Schoolof Law (he also earned a Master's Degree inGovernment from Georgetown Universityand a Business Degree from the Universityof Miami).

From taking the depositions of Chris Evertand Martina Navratilova to serving as cor-porate council to "Aventura's Architect"Robert Swedroe, Howard has always madecertain to "get involved." More often thannot, it has been in a pro bono/volunteer ca-pacity.

Over the past 25 years, Howard has inter-viewed Holocaust survivors living in Aven-tura for Steven Spielberg's ShoahFoundation; created a not-for-profit organi-zation with long- time friend Dan Gelber tobring teenage cancer patients to sportsevents; represented Aventura Cable (probono) in an effort to lower bulk cable ratesfor condominiums; served as an adoption ad-vocate on behalf of want-to-be parents andfought repeatedly for condominium rights inthe state legislature.

What has been his biggest thrill of the

last 25 years?Howard doesnot even hesi-tate: "Nothingwas greater thangoing from zeroto three childrenin one year"says Howard. We rescued ababy from an or-phanage inSiberia, Russiaand G-d followedup by blessing us with twins immediatelythereafter."

When asked what gives him the most sat-isfaction professionally, Howard states,"Fighting to correct an injustice always getsme highly motivated. Winning those fightsgives me the most satisfaction."

What does the future hold? "I tried myhand at teaching Government/Public Admin-istration at the university level and I lovedit" says Howard. "My student reviews wereexcellent. Within the next few years I wouldlike to do it full time. My goal is to encour-age greater participation in local municipalgovernment."
