As a daughter of the Rat Pack, Deana Martingrew up surrounded by song. “Uncle Frank,”

“That’s Amore” will also celebrate theincomparable voice of Luciano Pavarotti with a
special tribute featuring tenor FrankPortone. For the evening, Portone, whoserves as Principal Horn of theCharlotte Symphony, will lend his voiceto the passionate operatic arias ofLeoncavallo, Puccini, and Capua, madefamous by Pavarotti.
Portone welcomes the switch ofinstrument. “It is such a huge change ofpace for me to leave the back of theorchestra, where the horns sit, and stepto the front of the orchestra as a vocalsoloist,” says Portone. “It took somegetting used to when I first startedsinging with the Symphony. Now, after
singing many concerts withthe Charlotte Symphonyand other orchestras, I’m alittle more used to it. It willbe exciting to step up andsing all these arias and songsfor Charlotte audiences. I amreally looking forward tosinging on the “That’sAmore” Pops concerts!”

Spotlight, a series focusing on womenchoreographers, takes to the Knight Theater
stage April 28-30. For the first time in itshistory, Dance Theatre is devoting a series towomen choreographers, including a Companypremiere of The Golden Section by dance iconTwyla Tharp. Choreographers Jacqulyn Buglisiand Emery LeCrone are also featured.
The New York Timescalled Twyla Tharp “anAmerican artist of the firstorder” and wrote that she has“famously broken down thebarriers between ballet andmodern dance, fusing theminto a genre specifically herown.”
TheGolden Sectionwas choreographed byTharp to four separatelynamed musical compositions by DavidByrne, a founding member of the musicalgroup Talking Heads. Dressed in dancer/athleteget-ups of burnished golds, as if they were allOlympic champions, the seven male and sixfemale dancers sail, soar and tear through theair of the stage’s golden, glowing light.
When describing The Golden SectionTharp said, “the dancers stormed the stage witha new, positive energy” and anything that
wasn’t sheer dancing “disappeared into aharmonious wash of light, costumes, music andmovement.”
Legendary choreographer MarthaGraham’s influence can be seen in Requiem, apiece by former Graham Company principaldancer Jacqulyn Buglisi. Set to Gabriel Faure’s“Requiem,” Buglisi uses five female dancers,costumed in long layered silk skirts bycostumer A. Christina Giannini. According toBuglisi, who choreographed the ballet in 2001,the main themes of Requiem are man’svulnerabilities and peace.
North Carolina native and former NCDance Theatre 2 dancer Emery LeCroneis creating a new work for Spotlight.LeCrone was born in Greensboro, N.C.,
and studieddance at the
University of NorthCarolina School of the Arts
before joining Dance Theatre. It wasduring her time at Dance Theatre when she
began choreographing. JenniferDunning ofThe New
York Timescalled LeCrone’s choreography “…a delightfulwhole, exploring innovative partnering as wellas the ways spinning full-throttle movementcan echo and incorporate the planes of spacearound it.”
