Description: Parrots-R-4Ever (PARS) is a no-kill rescue shelter and sanctuary organization providing
care, rehabilitation and limited adoption services for abused, abandoned, or unwanted exotic pet birds.
We are dedicated primarily to the larger parrot species, macaws in particular. PARS was founded in
2002 as a community resource and formally incorporated in Alabama in 2004 as a non-profit, IRS class
501(c)3 tax exempt charitable organization. We are located in Huntsville, AL and serve the
Huntsville/Madison County area. PARS is staffed entirely by skilled volunteers who are themselves
experienced bird owners. The facility is not open to the general public as the presence of strangers
stresses many of the birds. However, "official business" visits can be arranged by appointment. PARS is
funded largely by private donors and corporations, but public donations are welcome. All donations are
tax-deductible.

Description: The Oasis Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit avian welfare organization. Established in
1997, The Oasis Sanctuary is a unique avian rescue and life-care facility, dedicated to providing
permanent care, shelter and rehabilitation for companion parrots for which other rehoming options do
not exist. In particular we are a refuge for exotic birds such as parrots, cockatoos, macaws and other
Psittacine birds – although we do accept Passerines (finches and canaries), Columbiformes (doves and
“fancy” or racing pigeons) and other captive avian species. Many of the birds in our care have “special
needs”, little or no social skills or have suffered physical and/or emotional abuse resulting in undesirable
psychological behaviors. The Oasis is often all that stands between life and death for these beautiful,
sentient and endangered companion birds. As a true Sanctuary, The Oasis does not breed, adopt out, sell
or trade birds. Once a bird enters the doors of The Oasis, they are guaranteed a lifetime of care and
compassion. We assess each individual bird to provide optimum care including a healthy diet, medical
care, opportunities for flight and flock socialization in natural aviary environments. Our first priority is,
and will remain the long-term care, well-being and safety of the birds entrusted to our care. The Oasis
Sanctuary was incorporated in the State of Arizona on May 22, 1997. We are a 501(c)(3) charitable
organization. Our Federal EIN number is 86-0885646. We are also registered with the Secretary of State
in Arizona as a recognized charity. The Oasis Sanctuary is proud to be the first exotic bird sanctuary to
have dual accreditation from the American Sanctuary Association (ASA) and the Global Federation of
Animal Sanctuaries (GAS).

Description: The Tucson Parrot Rescue (TPR) mission is to rescue parrots in need of new homes, no
matter the reason, and to improve the lives of companion birds. One of our main goals is to increase
individuals' knowledge of what to expect from parrots and how to care for them properly. The
organization also assists in reuniting lost birds with their families, help birds with issues so birds may
remain in their homes and arrange adoption of unwanted birds into caring homes with educated
caregivers. Tucson Parrot Rescue provides public education on the care and behavior of exotic birds,
and takes in unwanted parrots from all parts of the Southwest. We place these birds in safe, loving
environments with knowledgeable care givers. The primary educational program is an in-home visit and
educational course which provide "basic training" for prospective adopters. This course is created on an
individual basis. Please contact TPR to get more information on the in-home training. Once the class
and home visit is complete help is available 24/7 for any questions, concerns, issues with your birds.
Tucson Parrot Rescue does not have a facility. Instead birds are fostered in private homes, or kept in
their original homes until a new home is found which causes less disruption in their lives.

● Provide medical care and safe, healthy foster homes for the rescued birds we take in.
● Take in and rehabilitate injured or sick Conures from the San Francisco “Wild Parrots of Telegraph
Hill” flock.
● Find and educate quality adoptive homes for the birds in our foster care.
● Inform avian caregivers on the most current standards of care via our free classes, online resources,

Description: Parrots First was founded by Rose and Frank Levine, who along with Sue Pastel, Kymberly
Snow, Clifford Petersen, Bonnie Jay and a dedicated group of volunteers and foster homes make up
Parrots First. Rose and Frank started out in 1996 working on the adoption committee for their local bird
club. Like so many bird clubs these days, theirs had been around for a long time and membership was
beginning to decline. Most of the members were already in multi-bird flocks and just couldn't make
room for one more bird. It is understandable, everyone reaches a point where they just wouldn't be doing
the right thing for the new bird and the birds they already have. Although the adoption program was
phased out of the club, Rose and Frank continued to receive occasional telephone calls from people
looking to place parrots that they could no longer care for and they were happy to continue helping in
whatever way they could. Over the years the number of calls they received continued to grow until they
found themselves in a position in which they no longer had the resources to care for all of the birds that
came into their care. This is why Rose and Frank decided to form a volunteer-based group dedicated to
helping secondhand parrots. Parrots First is first and foremost an avian adoption service. The service
exists solely to help unwanted or found parrots and, through educational classes and seminars, we hope
to dispel many of the myths and misconceptions that are prevalent today. Parrots first is also a parrot
5
“rescue” in that we will do everything legally possible to remove a parrot from a harmful situation—but
in all honesty, this is something that only happens very occasionally. Mostly the organization is here to
help people who can no longer keep their bird for whatever the reason. The mission of Parrots First is to:
● educate people on the proper care of parrots and parrot-like birds, including their specific physical
and psychological needs
● rescue companion parrots from harmful or unwanted situations
● rehabilitate (when necessary) unwanted, found, or injured naturalized (free-flying) parrots, and
● offer these birds to qualified homes for adoption

Description: The Lily Sanctuary (TLS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The mission of TLS is to
provide loving sanctuary for homeless, unwanted, and special needs parrots in an in-home environment,
ensuring quality care, education, rehabilitation, and re-homing. TLS is among the first parrot sanctuaries
to provide a true in-home environment. The sanctuary not a shelter; but truly a home with 24-hour
supervision. The parrots experience the normal activities, sounds and interactions they might find in
their new home. They are provided with time in outdoor aviaries (weather permitting) to enjoy natural
sunlight and room to play. This results in less stress on the birds during transfer to a new home. The
flock experience helps them readjust from past issues. They learn from each other and rediscover joy,
playfulness and trust. The Lily Sanctuary is located in a private home in Fountain Valley, CA (Orange
County) and the sanctuary has anywhere between 25 to 35 parrots at a given time. They are mostly large
parrots including: Cockatoos, Macaws, African Greys and Amazons. Some parrots are available for
adoption while others are permanent residents due to special needs or prior arrangements made, but they
all need to be cared for equally. The atmosphere is loud, messy, crowded and chaotic, but at the same
time, it is congenial and upbeat because of our exceptional volunteers and amazing birds. Our parrots are
given the highest level of care including time in the sun in outdoor aviaries, daily baths if the weather
permits and are fed only the highest quality foods.

Limit of Animal Number: No limit, however, it will depend on the amount of space they have at the
time the bird is to be taken in. TGF currently provides quality care for 800+ birds each day.
Adoption Rates: There is an initial application fee, which covers a 1-yr membership to The Gabriel
Foundation (or a 1-yr extension if you are already a member), your choice of one of a group of selected
educational avian books or DVDs (up to $25 value) and the Beyond Bird Basics online course materials
and quizzes ($40 value). The actual adoption fee varies from bird to bird and ranges from $50 to over
$1000. Many factors are taken into account, including the species, age, health, and overall adopt-ability
of the bird. Once you have chosen a specific bird (or birds) we can give you an exact fee. In general, you
can expect to pay an adoption fee that is approximately 50% of what you would pay from a private party
or retail operation.
Rates: Based on our years of experience in maintaining the birds in our aviary, the following are our
minimum monetary guidelines for what we consider to be an acceptable standard of care. Considering
the age and species of your bird(s) and your financial planning needs, we suggest that you utilize the

Veterinary Technician; a nutritious, well-balanced diet; indoor and outdoor psychologically enriched
environments; and medical care by experienced avian veterinarians. The above information is only
intended to serve as a guide. We will be pleased to discuss your individual bird’s needs with you
concerning your wishes for its long-term care, whether in sanctuary, foster care or adoption placement.

Description: The Gabriel Foundation® is a 501(c)(3) avicultural and veterinary affiliated parrot welfare
organization licensed by the state of Colorado, promoting educational outreach, conservation, rescue,
rehabilitation, adoption, and sanctuary pertaining to the needs of parrots everywhere.
THE GABRIEL FOUNDATION’S PURPOSE AND MISSION
The Foundation’s purpose is to serve as a research and educational model to the public-at-large, the
veterinary medical community, the pet industry, humane animal welfare organizations and the
avicultural community. The Foundation educates the public about the importance of providing
appropriately for the welfare of parrots in captivity and the need to preserve the world’s parrots in their
wild habitats.
THE GABRIEL FOUNDATION: AN INTERNATIONAL FORCE
The Foundation is a nationally recognized parrot welfare organization that provides for the complete
physical, psychological, and environmental well-being of the parrots in its care via an integrated holistic
approach, insuring thorough education, follow-up, legal documentation and support services the
continued well-being of those parrots whether they remain in sanctuary, or transition to adoptive or
foster homes. Every decision to either accept a parrot into the organization or to place a parrot into
another situation is based on the individual bird’s best interest and the well-being of the present flock.
The organization also provides for the general welfare of parrots in the public domain by providing
accurate, comprehensive and reliable educational and resource materials to the interested public at large
through a variety of media approaches. The Foundation’s founder and President, Julie Weiss Murad, is a
part of the aviculture committee of the Association of Avian Veterinarians whose task is to develop
standards of care for avian rescue and sanctuary groups. The Foundation’s developing Avian Welfare
Council is an international committee whose goal is to develop and promote greater awareness of the
needs of parrots in captivity, whether in homes, rescue, sanctuary, or breeding facilities and in the retail
pet trade through a set of endorsed and supported guidelines and standards. The Gabriel Foundation
actively supports and endorses networking and liaison relationships with other parrot welfare
organizations, mainstream animal welfare organizations, the veterinary community, the avicultural
community, conservation organizations and the public at large. The Foundation's interaction and
involvement with other organizations endeavors to work cohesively to promote educational outreach and
to establish a prevailing responsible and quality “Standards of Care” for the cycle of the bird's life. The
future of the psittacine bird is completely dependent upon each and every one of us for its short and
long-term well-being. We must all work together on a universal level toward that shared goal.
THE GABRIEL FOUNDATION’S AVIARY
The Foundation’s medical director evaluates the acute, chronic, and long-term medical needs of all the
Foundation incoming and outgoing birds. The Foundation’s team of attending and affiliated
veterinarians, certified veterinary technicians, staff members, and volunteers provide for the total health
care, as well as, for the psychological and environmental needs of all birds. The data collected by the
Foundation concerning the birds entering and leaving the aviary, supported by continued follow up
communication, is invaluable to the creation of an accurate database. This critical data is needed to
support the efforts with facts to better the lives of parrots via human education about the specialized
needs of these birds. Birds enter the Foundation’s aviary for a variety of reasons: lack of human interest
and/or time, conflict with spouse or children, a bird’s incompatibility with the human’s expectations of
it, a bird’s “unacceptable” behavior, a bird’s physical handicap, a bird’s chronic illness, a lost bird,
rescue from animal cruelty or abandonment, family or financial hardship, human guardian’s illness or
9
death, or requests from a pet store, animal welfare organization, veterinarian or breeder to provide on-
going care, and individual request for sanctuary. The aviary features a separate quarantine room and area
and has 5 different rooms to house the birds depending upon their size, species, or health. The aviary
also includes a separate kitchen, showering area, small laboratory, office and greeting area. The aviary
has many outdoor flights of different sizes, group flocking areas and outdoor caging to provide for every
birds daily physical and psychological enrichment and benefit in addition to their nutritional and social
needs. [For detailed information, please refer to our Standard of Care and Protocols of Practice
brochures.] The aviary is able to provide consistent, high quality care for up to 250 psittacine birds on
premises at one time.
Programs: In addition to operating a one-of-a-kind aviary, the Foundation currently maintains seven
separate programs: education outreach, rescue, rehabilitation, foster care, adoption, sanctuary, and
conservation for the needs of parrots around the world.

Description: The Shyne Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation dedicated to the permanent
housing of formerly abused, neglected, and unwanted parrots. Birds were designed for flight and here
the birds live in a quarter-acre, 16-foot high free-flight simulated rainforest habitat in South Florida.
10
They are thus enabled to live their lives as closely as possible in the way nature intended, enjoying the
fresh air and sunshine, the trees, the rain, the feel of the earth beneath their feet and interactions with
each other. Bob and Liz Johnson, the founders of The Shyne Foundation, so named it in memory of
Shyne Browne, who was a dedicated researcher and breeder of Hyacinth Macaws. In her honor, the
Foundation is also continuing the research portion of her work with this highly endangered species.
Here, the Foundation is attempting to learn more about Hyacinths' natural interactive behaviors (and
misbehaviors) in this natural habitat setting, which has seldom, if ever, been done within the confines of
captivity. As the caretakers of parrots, we must consider preserving the spirit of the bird as well as
merely the physical form. A bird's environmental requirements differ greatly from ours and proper
environmental stimulation is important to both their physiological and psychological well-being. Here,
we are attempting to provide as natural a setting for them as possible. Being forced into an unnatural
environment results in many of the psychotic behaviors exhibited by some pet birds, such as feather
plucking, excessive screaming, and biting. Many of these undesirable behaviors are alleviated when
birds are allowed to express themselves as birds. When given a sense of self-determination and self-
worth, they heal.

Type of Animals Accepted: Tropical birds only.
Limit of Animal Number: As the rescue continues to grow, our policies must adapt accordingly. Taking
reservations for birds that will be entrusted to our care will enable us to project and thereby ensure our
feathered residents receive the quality and continuation of care you would want for them and they so
deserve. We currently have over 1,400 birds and we expect the numbers will continue to increase over
the next few years. The new parrot habitats now under construction will accommodate the permanent
resident birds already here at the rescue, but we also want to look ahead in preparation for meeting the
needs of our incoming future residents. Per the website on 1/15/2019, plans are underway to include
additional new habitat areas to handle up to 2,500 birds. At that point, Feathered Friends will be full.
Adoption Rates: Adoption fees are based on the needs and housing for each bird for such things as food
or vet bills. These fees then go into the continued operation of the Rescue. The sanctuary does not give
information on specific birds over the phone or by email until your application is approved. However, as
a guide, adopting is about 1/4 to 1/2 the cost of pet stores or breeders. One also needs to fully understand
ALL the costs of having a feathered companion before you adopt.
Description: Feathered Friends Forever Rescue/Refuge, Inc. is a State-of-Georgia licensed animal

victims of neglect and abuse. Feathered Friends Forever was established as a rescue service, specifically
for parrots and related species. The goals of Feathered Friends Forever are to rescue abused or unwanted
parrots from both retail and private situations (for example would be birds that have passed from owner
to owner because of behavioral problems) to act as a placement service for friendly and tame birds
whose owners have had to give up their bird(s) for any reason; to serve as an educational resource on the
care and responsibilities of owning tropical parrots as pets and advice service for prospective bird
owners, current bird owners via email, schools, and retail pet stores; to serve as a permanent sanctuary
for birds not suitable for adoption; to build “as close to natural” habitat homes for our birds.

find them good, permanent, loving homes. BNW also strives to educate the community on the special
needs of these wonderful birds. They promote good health, enriched lives, and loving homes for our
feathered companions. Members range from the novice, single or multi-pet owner, to the experienced
owner of multiple species. If you have a bird question, there’s sure to be someone in the club who will
be happy to help you.

Description: The Wilson Parrot Foundation (WPF) is a 501(C)(3) non-profit dedicated to rescuing,
rehabilitating, and re-homing neglected and abused Parrots. Their mission is to teach the public about
having parrots as pets and how to provide for them with caring and compassion. The WPF travels to
shows and events all over the east coast to raise funds and educate people about care and commitment to
tropical birds. WPF then focuses on assessing each parrot's needs and rehabilitates them to become
sociable human companions. Parrots are rehabilitated by watching other parrots interact with the public.
WPF gives back to the community in exchange for donations through parrot parties, school
presentations, nursing homes, using parrot tricks to talk about guns, fires, and seatbelt safety, and
providing unique pictures for the public at permitted locations. WPF rehabilitates parrots before
fostering or adopting out parrots; making the best decision for that parrot. To adopt a parrot, one must
first meet volunteer criteria in order to understand the commitment required. WPF is a proven non-profit
rescue, which means 100% of your donations (money or material) are tax-deductible. WPF does not
breed or sell parrots. If a volunteer wished to adopt a parrot, they must be 30 or older, commit to 3 hours
a week for 6 months or 6 hours a week for 3 months, and complete a home visit. Once the bird is
released to a new home, a probationary period must be met to ensure a match between bird and owner.

Type of Animals Accepted: Parrots.
Limit of Animal Number: The limit of animals is restricted by the space that is available at any given
time. There is currently a 60–90 day waiting list for all intakes except in true emergencies. If you are
considering the surrender of a bird, please contact MAARS as soon as possible.
Rates: There is not a required fee for accepting animals into this facility. However, they do ask for a
donation at the time of surrender and suggest $25 for small birds and $50 for large birds.
Description: Midwest Avian Adoption & Rescue Services, Inc. is recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)3
nonprofit organization (Federal ID# 41-1944074) and is registered with the Office of the Secretary of
State and the Office of the Attorney General of Minnesota as a charitable organization. All donations are
tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.
13
Captive Bird Surrender (Intake) Services: The organization, MAARS, recognizes that many people
can be helped over the "rough spots" in their relationships with their avian companions by offering new
information, insights, and resources for coping with the life changes that test these relationships. Unless
the situation is extreme or unchangeable, a bird is usually better off continuing to live with its familiar
family "flock." However, while it may be possible for MAARS to offer advice in accommodating life
changes, surrendering a bird for placement is often the only long-term solution. Although ending a
relationship with a beloved companion — even a troubled one — can be very difficult, it is sometimes
the best decision for everyone involved. All MAARS birds are thoroughly evaluated and treated or
rehabilitated whenever appropriate and for as long as is deemed necessary and in an individual bird's
best interest. Any bird that is determined to have a medical condition receives appropriate treatment at
MAARS' expense. Nationally renowned and highly respected veterinary specialists and researchers
consult regularly with MAARS veterinarians. MAARS maintains detailed files on every bird, including
past histories and a record of all tests and treatment(s), concerns, and health or behavioral issues. As an
organization, MAARS requires that all birds entering The Landing or a MAARS foster home obtain a
CBC and Chlamydia PCR Test. All birds also undergo additional tests based upon species and history as
follows:
● Lovebird: PBFD (PCR), biopsy for feather-pickers/mutilators
● Cockatiel: Giardia (Elisa)
● Cockatoo, Grey, Eclectus: PBFD (PCR), biopsy for feather-pickers/mutilators
● Lory: PBFD (PCR), biopsy for feather-pickers/mutilators
● Conure, Amazon, Macaw: Pacheco's (PCR)
● Disadvantaged history and/or presenting signs: Comprehensive chemistry, culture(s), x-ray,
endoscopy, biopsies, heavy metal toxicity, aspergillus testing (Elisa), and other diagnostic tools/
methods.
Captive Bird Rescue Services: MAARS must occasionally rescue birds that have been neglected,
abused, abandoned, injured, or malnourished. These are always the most heartbreaking cases, and they
can move the most seasoned rescue worker to tears and rage. All MAARS birds are thoroughly
evaluated and treated or rehabilitated whenever appropriate and for as long as is deemed necessary and
in an individual bird's best interest. (See above evaluation/treatment details) For severely neglected or
abused birds there may be no happy ending, but we do all that we can to provide love, comfort, care, and
a safe place to live. If they choose to fight, we fight with them. If they choose to trust again, we give
them our trust. If they choose to be unforgiving, we offer our forgiveness. And if they must leave this
world, we allow them their dignity and give them our respect.
Bird Adoption Services: Adoption into qualified, non-breeding homes is the preferred option for most
parrots and other captive birds. Caring for a captive bird requires a serious commitment, especially if the
bird is older and has suffered from neglect, abuse, or ignorance on the part of its former human
companion.
Captive Bird Sanctuary Placement Services: In some instances, it is not appropriate or desirable to
place a bird into a private home. In these cases, sanctuary placement insures a permanent, stable, life-
long home. MAARS currently collaborates with existing organizations to provide this type of setting,
should it be determined that sanctuary is the best environment for the bird.

Description: Mollywood is a place where rescued Moluccan Cockatoos can come to live out their days

home and future for all psittacine species [hookbill parrots] that are free from contagious diseases. Birds

Lifetime sanctuary care in a natural environment is often the best option for displaced, abused or
mentally ill captive parrots that have failed to thrive in a single-family home.
Mollywood’s overall goals include ending the misinformation that contributes to the cycle of abused,
neglected and abandoned pet birds. An important tool in the fight to improve the lives of birds is
education. Community outreach and action is required to improve public knowledge regarding the status
of parrots in domestic and native situations. The outreach and education initiative will begin
Mollywood’s proactive efforts toward educating and re-educating the public, with the goal of reducing
the high turnover rate of newly acquired pet parrots.
