Our work in Terminal 2, the Heathrow Commuter Pro-gramme and the Heathrow Sustainability Part-nership are examples of innovation in action and we are proud they are being cited in Avia-tion Climate Solutions. Terminal 2 is the only bREEAM (building Re-search Establishment’s environmental assess-ment methodology) certified airport terminal and its cutting-edge sustainable design, and use of biomass fuel is one measure which has helped to reduce Heathrow’s C02 emissions by almost 20% since 1990.

ICAO has predicted that emissions from inter-national aviation will increase to as much as 755 metric megatons in 2020 from 448 mega-tons in 2010. Greenhouse gases from aviation make up about 2% of the global total, a pro-portion that’s rising as other industries rein in their own emissions.

Etihad Airways, one of the largest airlines in the Mid-dle East, has spearheaded this innovative IFE initiative, the first of its type in the industry, to provide an enhanced and consistent passenger experience while also generating cost efficien-cies across participating carriers, including In-dia’s Jet Airways, Germany’s airberlin, Alitalia of Italy, Air Seychelles of the Seychelles Islands, and Serbia’s national airline Air Serbia.

Astra Aviation has signed a new Ground Han-dling Agreement with airport services pro-vider, National Aviation Services (NAS), at Fe-lix Houphouet Boigny Airport, Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire. Under the terms of the agreement (NAS), part of the Agility group, will provide the physical ground handling, whilst Astra, via its local company and offices, will handle and coordinate the customers’ requests, along with managing the administration of payments for airport, handling, navigation and crew costs. This is the first time that Astra has signed a full SGHA with NAS and will ensure Astra Aviation customers receive improved service levels, an enhanced professional approach to ground handling, along with transparency and efficien-cy in contracting and payments.

Peninsula Airways (PenAir), one of the largest regional airlines in Alaska and the Northeast U.S., has selected Panasonic Avionics’ Flight-Link for 18 SAAb SF340 and three SAAb 2000 aircraft. With FlightLink, PenAir adds aircraft operation center (AOC) voice, data, and air-craft positioning and tracking to its fleet of SAAb aircraft.

The agreement will support one of the Asia-Pacific’s largest airline groupings, which in-cludes Qantas, Qantas Freight, QantasLink and the Jetstar Group, operating almost 300 aircraft to 85 destinations.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced global passenger traffic re-sults for August showing a continuation of the strong growth in air travel demand for both do-mestic and international traffic. Total revenue passenger kilometers (RPKs) rose 7.1% com-pared to the year-ago period. August capacity (available seat kilometers or ASKs) increased by 5.9%, and load factor rose 0.9 percentage points to a record 84.7%. “August results con-tinue the trend of strong demand for air travel, despite some softening in global economic growth, particularly in emerging markets,” said Tony Tyler, IATA’s Director General and CEO.

In addition to providing Flight Data Management and Flight Operational Quality Assurance services, GE Aviation’s Flight

Analytics System will deliver their Fuel Manage-ment Solution, which will include the evalua-tion and analysis of flight and operational data to identify and prioritize fuel savings opportuni-ties and enable a platform for fuel management analytics.
